93.7 The Fan Sports Director Jeff Hathhorn joined the show. Jeff talked about the change on the Steelers depth chart on the defensive line as Montravius Adams being named starter over Tyson Alualu. Poni questioned the change after Adams struggled against the run last year in Alualu's absence. Jeff commented on when Minkah Fitzpatrick was placed on the injury report and how he seemed in the locker room after Thursday's loss. Jeff does not think Kendrick Green starts in the absence of Kevin Dotson and it will likely be Jesse Davis instead. Jeff doesn't anticipate a ton of changes, but is hopeful we see more of Mitch Trubisky using his legs outside of the pocket. Jeff gave his thoughts on what Mike Tomlin said earlier today and if he buys into it. He said Tomlin knows the team has been beat up and wants to lift the spirits a little bit by not panicking.

Crowley got his revenge on Poni. The reviews are out for Steelers new offensive line addition, Jesse Davis. They aren't good. But, could it still actually be an upgrade over what the Steelers have right now? Crowley said the Steelers should find their best five and go forward with the offensive line. Poni credited the Raiders for cutting Alex Leatherwood today and cutting their losses on a bad pick. He wishes the Steelers would do that with someone like Kendrick Green. The guys debated if they would rather have Davis or Leatherwood on the roster right now? Crowley went Davis and Poni went with Leatherwood. The other new addition today was Malik Reed – who Arthur Moats is very high on.

Chris Carter of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, hosts the Locked on Steelers podcast, and is joined by Jenna Harner of WPXI-TV. As the Pittsburgh Steelers gear up for their final preseason game vs. the Detroit Lions, Kenny Pickett gets ready for his last chance to show the Steelers that he can be a starting quarterback before the regular season. Does he do enough to take Mitch Trubisky's spot? Also, Kevin Dotson has played as the Steelers' starting left guard in place of Kendrick Green this week in practice. What does Dotson have to do to boost the offensive line. Devin Bush, Robert Spillane and Myles Jack look to finalize the linebacker rotation. What must they show to make the defense more complete? Meanwhile, Gunner Olszewski, Myles Boykin and Steven Sims compete for the last wide receiver spots and Derek Tuszka, Delonte Scott and Hamilcar Rashed Jr. look to prove the Steelers don't need another backup edge rusher behind T.J. Chris Carter of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, hosts the Locked on Steelers podcast. The Pittsburgh Steelers offensive line got roasted by Mike Tomlin in team meetings after their poor display against the Jacksonville Jaguars in preseason. Kendrick Green got called out, but the entire unit from Mason Cole, to Kevin Dotson, to Chukwuma Okorafor and Dan Moore Jr. needs to show improvement. Interviews from the Steelers locker room give insight into who might step up, and why fans should have patience with offensive line coach Pat Meyer. Also, the New England Patriots have Isaiah Wynn on the trade block. Should Tomlin and Omar Khan get on the phone to talk about trading for the former first round pick offensive lineman? Finally, Terrell Edmunds had a pretty good game against the Jaguars. Listen to his interview in the locker room about what he's doing to help the run defense and why he thinks Damontae Kazee has been a perfect fit for him, Minkah Fitzpatrick and the Steelers' safeties. Another odd cut by the Steelers as they trim the roster from 85 to 80 was outside linebacker Genard Avery. Not that Avery is a key player, but the lack of depth at that spot makes this a puzzling move. On top of that, Alex Highsmith has been dinged up the duration of camp. The guys are concerned with what the Steelers have behind Highsmith and TJ Watt, leading basically no room for error.  Steelers insider Brian Batko from the Post-Gazette joined the show. Brian doesn't put much stock in the Mike Tomlin comment about the starting QB job being on the line Sunday against the Lions. He still thinks it's definitely Mitch Trubisky going forward for the Steelers. Brian also doesn't buy Tomlin's comments about why he took Kenny Pickett out of the game so early in Jacksonville. Brian thinks the left guard battle is still ongoing between Kendrick Green and Kevin Dotson, but thinks Dotson has the edge because of how bad Green has been. Brian thinks the move today means Mason Rudolph is safe as QB3 going into the season. Chris asked if Mark Robinson is making enough of an impact on this team to be at the heels of Devin Bush. Brian broke down the curious move of cutting Genard Avery earlier today. Brian said Hamilcar Rashed is a surprising player making a name for himself in camp. Brian doesn't expect to see Kevin Colbert much during the season even though it was portrayed that Colbert would stay heavily involved with the team. He doesn't rule out the team making a late move in camp to improve offensive line or outside linebacker.

Chris Carter of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, hosts the Locked on Steelers podcast. The Pittsburgh Steelers' offensive line has a major guard problem with James Daniels and Kendrick Green. But is the answer to trade for J.C. Tretter? And can Kevin Dotson get healthy enough to fix the problem? The answer might need a move from Omar Khan, or just more creative scheming for the Steelers mobile quarterbacks in Mitch Trubisky, Kenny Pickett or Mason Rudolph. Speaking of Rudolph, the calls to trade him for a draft pick miss the mark. Chris Carter sees that as a bad idea, and he references what the Steelers went through in 2019 with Rudolph and Devlin Hodges when Ben Roethlisberger got hurt. Rudolph should be a "break glass in case of emergency QB." And that's fine. Also, Robert Spillane, Chase Claypool, Mason Cole and even Devin Bush were players who looked better on a film review of the Steelers' preseason win over the Jacksonville Jaguars than they did live. The Steelers offensive line looked brutally bad on Saturday night. How dire is that unit? They have so little talent up front and have become too bull-headed to create a disaster. Chris referenced the 2016 offensive line, which featured Maurkice Pouncey (1st round pick), David DeCastro (1st round pick) and Marcus Gilbert (2nd round pick), and wondered why the Steelers have gone away from that formula? We heard an answer from Kendrick Green, who said he hasn't done anything to win the left guard battle against Kevin Dotson. The guys agreed that Dotson needs to be the man at left guard by week one. There is severe worry for James Daniels, who was supposed to be the leader of this group.  HOF left tackle Tony Boselli joined the show. Tony was at the game Saturday night as a former Jaguars offensive lineman. To put it lightly, Tony said the Steelers offensive line struggled against Jacksonville. He highlighted Dan Moore Jr. struggling in one-on-one action with Josh Allen. He said the Steelers QBs were getting “harassed” for the entire first half and most of the game. He said technique is a change the Steelers can make up front that goes a long, long way. He said there is an unfair battle with playing on the offensive line because you are almost always facing superior athletes, but technique can be the great equalizer. He said offensive line coach is the most important hire for any head coach. Unfortunately, besides the Mike Munchak era, it doesn't appear like that coaching position has been taken very seriously. He said center is the point of communication and some guys aren't quite built to be a master of communicating along with the skills needed to play the position. He said the lack of reps through camp makes it hard for the guys to look good as a unit right off the bat. Tony had high praise for Kenny Pickett from Saturday night and was very impressed by the 2-minute drill before halftime. He said Pickett is probably the best quarterback on the roster and said it should be the best guy regardless of age or experience level. He doesn't like the argument of throwing a QB into the fire too early, he said “you're good or you're not.” He really likes the quick decision making from Pickett early on. The Steelers are coming off another preseason win, 16-15 over Jacksonville Saturday night. Kenny Pickett shined yet again. Are we overreacting? Pickett saw more “varsity” action in the win, but it only took 8 snaps to impress Mike Tomlin. Is it a sign that Tomlin is closer to pulling the trigger for Pickett as QB1? Mitch Trubisky didn't play poorly, but Pickett looked ready to go.  Steelers insider Ray Fittipaldo from the Post-Gazette joined the show. Ray said Kenny Pickett gets an A for his performance in the first two preseason games. He said in his opportunities he's been great. The guys asked Ray what he thinks will end up of Mason Rudolph, who currently sits at third string. He thought Mitch Trubisky played OK against Jacksonville, saying he hasn't done a lot either way to lose his starting job. Ray said the offensive line knows how badly it performed as a whole Saturday night. Ray said there is a chance the team could make a move for a veteran OL before the season. Poni labeled Kendrick Green as “unplayable.” Ray said in pass protection, Kevin Dotson is clearly the better guy at left guard. The guys asked Ray of his thoughts on Mark Robinson and if he already makes a better case to start than Devin Bush at this point, but the gap would have to be enormous for a late-round rookie like Robinson to crack the starting lineup anytime soon. Ray thinks you saw a small improvement from Bush in the second preseason game. Ray said the preseason finale will likely be viewed as the dress rehearsal game.  There was a fan fight at the Steelers-Jaguars game Saturday.

It's the vision Matt Canada's had for some time now, and it may be the perfect fit for what the Steelers' offense needs to become in the coming years. Pickett talks about that impact on the show. Also, Kendrick Green and Anthony McFarland talk about how the run game looked better Saturday night, how some of it spins off Dan Moore Jr., and what Eddie Faulkner and Pat Meyer have gotten from their groups in practice so far. Steelers insider Ray Fittipaldo from the Post Gazette joined the show. Ray gave his big takeaway from today's practice following the preseason victory. He said a couple starting jobs are still up for grabs and Mike Tomlin wasn't thrilled with the 2-minute drill. Ray reported that Kenny Pickett took all second team reps today instead of Mason Rudolph. Ray said Kendrick Green appeared to be in a lot of pain when he left practice with an injury, but ended up finishing the practice with no X-ray. Ray talked about Anthony McFarland and Jaylen Warren becoming a camp battle with Benny Snell still sidelined. The guys asked Ray about the inside linebacker battle and said Tomlin reiterated that it is indeed a battle between Devin Bush and Robert Spillane. The guys really wonder why Bush is so afraid of contact. He doesn't give Roquan Smith any chance of becoming a Steeler. Chris asked Ray what he thought of the offensive line after one preseason game.

One Steelers rookie that has seemed to shine again and again is George Pickens. Another big practice today. What are your expectations for him and are they realistic? The guys want either 1,000+ yards or 10 touchdowns as a rookie. We jumped to Deshaun Watson after reports that other NFL owners, via Ed Werder, believe the punishment for Watson is way too lenient and “should be more of everything” regarding game length and fine.  Steelers offensive line coach Pat Meyer joined Jeff Hathhorn after today's practice. The guys ranked how they feel about the current offensive line – all three have Kendrick Green at five, assuming he gets the edge over Kevin Dotson. How worried are you about this group?

He got into George Pickens and how much he could impact this offense right away. Alex gives a big picture view of what he has observed the first two days of camp and we go over things like the injury report and why he collects the daily stats that he does, much to the chagrin of the major media outlets. With Steelers wide receiver Diontae Johnson starting off the team's 2022 training camp with a hold-in of sorts, Alex and I dive into talking about that topic. We discuss all angles related to Johnson's actions. We discuss what kind of contract might please both sides when it comes to Johnson and the Steelers. The Arizona Cardinals have attempted to put the toothpaste back in the tube when it comes to the new contract they gave to quarterback Kyler Murray, so Alex and I discuss how that seems to be going for them.Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was back in the news cycle again on Thursday thanks to a radio interview he did in the morning. We discuss whether or not Roethlisberger will continually put himself in the news cycle moving forward into 2022. We also talk about Steelers defensive tackle Cameron Heyward and his new podcast and if he might regret doing it once the regular season gets underway.Steelers guard Kendrick Green made some interesting comments on Thursday about not liking to play center so that gets the attention of Alex and myself during this show.As usual, we close out this show by answering a few emails that we received from listeners.

Ultimately, it seems like Ben's comments were just shots at Mike Tomlin, Antonio Brown and Le'Veon Bell, and didn't venture much further than that.  Chris said there's a position “battle” hiding in plain sight. He said Mitch Trubisky is the man based on how reps are being treated, even after just one full day of camp. Kevin Dotson was asked about his battle with Kendrick Green, in which he said it's absolutely a competition. Those guys split reps 50/50 yesterday with the starting unit. He talked about the shortcomings of Johnson, but said he doesn't go too hard on him for the drops. He said elite guys don't have real weaknesses. Steve dove into Jeremy McNichols, who the Steelers just signed, but said he's likely RB3 instead of a backup at this point. In the same realm, Chris asked Steve about Benny Snell at this stage in his career. On the offensive line, Steve labeled Kendrick Green as “intriguing” saying he may have more potential than Kevin Dotson in the battle for guard. Steve thinks there is a chance the Browns make a push for Jimmy Garoppolo if they get bad news on Deshaun Watson that could impact the majority of their season. Steve said corner back is the biggest question mark on the defensive side, but made mention of key players at each level of the unit. “Tuitt is a much better player” was Steve's response to being asked if Larry Ogunjobi is a better player than Stephon Tuitt, who he described as “fantastic.” Chris asked Steve what is in store for Alex Highsmith in '22-'23, saying he could provide double digit sacks.

We also discuss a $3.5 million error made by the NFLPA that needs to be straightened out.Alex and I look at the Steelers projected usable salary cap space as of Tuesday morning and have a long talk about how much of a buffer the team will decide to keep going into the 2022 regular season. We discuss the possibility of the team maybe restructuring the contract of outside linebacker T.J. Watt later in the offseason. An additional segment from The Pivot Podcast interview with Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin was released since our last show so Alex and I recap two main talking points that we took away from it. One is the impact of the Steelers loss to the Green Bay Packers in the Super Bowl on the Hall of Fame candidacy of wide receiver Hines Ward. The other centers around the NFL game changing related to how the Steelers defense used to play back in 2010 and prior.Former Steelers inside linebacker Vince Williams had some interesting things to say during his interview on The Arthur Moats Experience With Deke podcast so Alex and I make sure to cover a few items from that show.As part of us continuing to preview Steelers players ahead of training camp get underway, Alex and I spend the Tuesday show discussing Ulysees Gilbert III, Kendrick Green, Joe Haeg, Najee Harris, Pressley Harvin III, and J.C. Hassenauer in this episode.
