Mike interviewed Ernest "Turk" Harvey, a sports performance trainer in Thibodaux, during WWL's "Triple Option" segment. Harvey evaluated players he trained: former LSU DT Maason Smith and current Lions CB Amik Robertson. Harvey also promoted Camp Moula, his training camp. 

The biggest question mark going into the LSU offseason post spring football was the defensive line, after guys like Maason Smith, Mehki Wingo and Jordan Jefferson departed for the NFL that left the LSU defensive line room and new defensive line coach Bo Davis to pick up the pieces. Those pieces are senior Jacobian Guillory, Florida transfer Jalen Lee, and JUCO transfer Shone Washington. Those are LSU's main three defensive lineman and then you add in former OL Kimo Makeneole, walk-on Preston Hickey, true freshman former 5-star Dominic Mckinley, Wisconsin transfer Gio Paez and Grand Valley State transfer Jay'viar Suggs. Then you move to the second level which is the linebackers, the returners there are senior Greg Penn, junior Harold Perkins, Whit Weeks, and West Weeks. Newcomers to the room are Dayvon Keys and Tylen Singleton. This may be LSU's deepest and possibly its most talented group on the defensive side of the ball but will still need the help of the defensive line to truly reach its potential. The secondary is also very talented but hasn't played a lot of football together. All in all this LSU defense should be much better than last years, they can't be much worse right? LSU Tigers head coach Brian Kelly shared with the media after the spring game that defensive tackle would be their main focus and number one priority in the spring transfer portal window. LSU lost its two starting DTs, Mekhi Wingo and Maason Smith, to the NFL Draft this past weekend and there is no clear heir apparent currently on the roster. While LSU has targeted several players in the portal to fill that position, they host one today. Damonic Williams, a two-year starting DT out of TCU, is the second rated defensive lineman in the spring transfer portal class. Williams took visits with the Texas Longhorns, Oklahoma Sooners, and Missouri Tigers this past week and now finds himself in Baton Rouge taking a visit with the Tigers. Plus, six former Tigers were drafted this past weekend in the NFL Draft. Former LSU QB and Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels was selected second overall to the Washington Commanders, followed by Malik Nabers to the Giants and Brian Thomas Jr. to the Jaguars in the first round. Smith is also heading to Jacksonville in addition to DT Jordan Jefferson. DT Mekhi Wingo was the final Tiger off the board as the Detroit Lions selected him in the sixth round of the Draft. Steve and Jeff broke down the high stakes in tonight's Pelicans-Kings showdown in the Western Conference Play-In Tournament at the Smoothie King Center. The guys spoke to Justin Melo of the Draft Network about LSU DT prospect Maason Smith. John Hendrix, a lead writer for the Saints News Network, joined Steve and Jeff. The LSU Tigers started spring practice on Tuesday and the team will look much different than it did last season. Those reading that sentence with the offense in mind may shudder. But those reading that with the defense in mind may gleam with optimism. The LSU defense last season ranked at the bottom of college football in nearly every statistical category which ultimately led to head coach Brian Kelly moving on from defensive coordinator Matt House and completely overhauling the defensive coaching staff. So how much work is cut out for new defensive coordinator Blake Baker, formerly with the Missouri Tigers, and how much improvement is realistic to expect from one of the worst units in the sport last year? First and foremost, it starts on the defensive line. LSU lost it's two starting defensive tackles, Maason Smith and Mekhi Wingo, to the 2024 NFL Draft. LSU head football coach Brian Kelly sat down with Wilson Alexander of The Baton Rouge Advocate and shared that elite defensive talent Harold Perkins will move back to the inside linebacker position for the 2024 season, likely Perkins' last season with the Tigers before declaring for the NFL Draft. As a freshman, Perkins played a fluid, edge rusher/quarterback spy role. In his second season, Kelly and former defensive coordinator Matt House wanted Perkins to play a true position and felt his most natural one was at ILB. So Perkins played that position in the first game of the 2023 season against Florida State and was essentially a non-factor versus the Seminoles. Perkins recorded five tackles and zero sacks against FSU, a far cry from his impact the season prior. Kelly moved Perkins to SAM linebacker for the rest of last season, but is willing to try it again this year.Kelly overhauled the coaching staff this offseason bringing in former Missouri DC Blake Baker to serve in the same role with the Bayou Bengals. Baker has a proven track record of developing and refining linebackers and even has a history of doing so at LSU. In 2021, Baker served as the linebackers coach under DC Daronte Jones' staff.
