In Australia, no wedding or school dance is complete without the Nutbush, Australia's unofficial national dance. The Nutbush – a simple line dance to the song “Nutbush City Limits,” by Ike and Tina Turner – has become as stereotypically Australian as kangaroos, boomerangs, and Vegemite. And yet, hardly anyone outside of Australia even knows the Nutbush exists. Here at Decoder Ring, we certainly didn't – until we started getting emails from Australians asking us to investigate its origins. How did an American song become the soundtrack for an Australian national tradition? Who invented the iconic steps, and why does every Australian know them? Our producer Max Freedman put on his dancing shoes to get some answers. The global, century-spanning story of the Nutbush involves Australia, Tennessee, Denmark, primary schools, gay discos, and demonstrates that even the goofiest cultural touchstones can go surprisingly deep.In this episode you'll hear from culture journalists David Mack and Angus Kidman; Nutbush researchers Panizza Allmark and Jon Stratton; dance historians Erica Okamura and Richard Powers; Dr. Fiona Chatteur, Jeremy Santolin, and Brian Kerr. This episode was written and produced by Max Freedman and edited by Evan Chung, our supervising producer. The first episode of a non-theme month here in June (and the 743rd overall) gets loud about Baz Luhrmann's bombastic Moulin Rouge. It's the kind of zany project where the director and star of this Paris-set movie are both Australians (Luhrmann and Nicole Kidman) while the co-lead is Scottish (Ewan McGregor) and a Colombian (John Leguizamo) plays the real-life French writer Toulouse Lautrec. Kidman and McGregor are well-matched as gaga lovers and, while she got most of the raves, he's just as good...if not even better. Baz's main hook is to use anachronistic pop hits on the soundtrack in his frantic, garish musical that's absolutely in love with love. Either you're all in...or you won't be able to put up with more than 10 minutes of it. But put up with me talking baout the sickly courtesan and her idealistic writer who l'amour things up in the spectacular (spectacular) Moulin Rouge. Crime fiction has rarely produced a protagonist quite like Kay Scarpetta. For decades, Patricia Cornwell's bestselling novels followed the brilliant forensic pathologist and medical examiner navigating grisly cases while balancing the messy emotional realities of family, love, and professional obsession. Now, the long-awaited adaptation has finally arrived in the form of Prime Video's new series “Scarpetta,” starring Nicole Kidman as the iconic medical examiner alongside Jamie Lee Curtis, Ariana DeBose, Bobby Cannavale, Simon Baker, and more. The show is shepherded by creator and showrunner Liz Sarnoff, whose writing résumé includes “Barry,” “Lost,” “Deadwood,” and “Marco Polo.” The series takes an ambitious approach to Cornwell's world by weaving together two timelines: one set in the late 1990s and another in the present day, allowing the story to explore both the early years of Scarpetta's career and the more seasoned version of the character audiences meet decades later.READ MORE: ‘DTF: St. Louis': Jason Bateman, Linda Cardellini, David Harbour, & Steve Conrad On Vulnerability, Sexual Secrets, & Jason Bateman's MCU Character [Bingeworthy Podcast]On this episode of The Playlist's Bingeworthy podcast, Sarnoff joins host Mike DeAngelo to talk about finally bringing the beloved character to the screen, why the show merges multiple books into a single narrative structure, how Kidman approached the technical realities of forensic work, and how the series distinguishes itself from typical procedural storytelling.

Next up is Taylor Sheridan's The Madison on Paramount+, the latest from the writer-producer's ever-expanding Yellowstone's universe. It centre's on Michelle Pfeiffer's Stacy and her Big Apple family coming to terms with their patriarchs death, and their sudden move from city-life to rural Montana. When Eyes Wide Shut opened in the summer of 1999, it was widely considered a disappointment. This final film from legendary director Stanley Kubrick had been sold as an erotic thriller, and potentially even a peek into the real sex lives of its then-married stars, Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman. But Eyes Wide Shut was stranger than that: a meditative art film whose much-hyped orgy scene is more creepy than sexy, run by a cabal of rich and powerful men who prey on young women. But Eyes Wide Shut has received a burst of new attention in the last few years, amid constant revelations about a real-life cabal of rich and powerful men who prey on young women. Across the internet, cinema sleuths have been asking: is it possible Eyes Wide Shut was not fictional? Was Stanley Kubrick trying to warn the world about a real conspiracy? This week on Forgotten Cinema, the Mikes trek through "Cold Mountain", Anthony Minghella's sweeping Civil War drama starring Jude Law, Nicole Kidman, and Renée Zellweger, that both of them ultimately enjoyed, even while acknowledging its many hurdles. The film has a lot working against it. The dialogue often feels pulled straight from the novel, the tone is relentlessly dreary, and at 154 minutes it asks a lot of its audience. Mike Butler and Mike Field also struggle with the central romance, finding it hard to believe that Kidman's and Law's characters would risk everything for a relationship that never really existed.Despite those issues, the Mikes agree that "Cold Mountain" tells a compelling story and contains several genuinely powerful moments. Strong supporting performances, striking imagery, and episodic stretches of the journey help elevate the film beyond its flaws. It may be long, heavy, and imperfect, but "Cold Mountain" still leaves an impression and offers enough substance to make the journey worthwhile.

Well, we recently talked about the first Chronicle of Narnia … the book! Yet many fans found or rediscovered this series thanks to the Disney-distributed, Walden Media–made film from director Andrew Adamson. Want to feel old? That was two decades ago! So now we shall look back at Narnia's journey to the box office with The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, which released twenty years ago on Dec. 9, 2005. Joseph got his start in television as an anchor for NHK and CNN's The Entertainment Report in the 1990's and his company MJM produced documentaries and supervised the international release of over a hundred albums by various pop and rock artists. In addition to producing his own films, he oversees a marketing team that has marketed 75 films since 2001. From 2000-2005 he worked in development and marketing for Walden Media and Crusader Entertainment and oversaw a grassroots marketing team. He has served as a producer on 15 films, including Max Rose starring Jerry Lewis, The Vessel starring Martin Sheen, America, Japan: Searching For The Dream, Frank vs. God and others. Joseph is the author of four books including The Lion, The Professor & The Movies: Narnia's Journey To The Big Screen and has been a regular contributor to publications like Forbes, The Hollywood Reporter, Variety, USA Today, The Huffington Post and FoxNews.com. YAF.org: Mark Joseph Facebook: MJM Entertainment Group Instagram: @markjoseph00 The Lion, The Professor & The Movies: Narnia's Journey To The Big Screen Making REAGAN: A Memoir from the Producer of the REAGAN Movie 1. Narnia's journey from book to screen … The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe got one TV animation (1979) Then the story (plus two more) came to live-action BBC TV (1988) Yet it was the Walden Media–made film that went bigger (2005) That film released just twenty years ago in the U.S., Dec. 9, 2005 Mark Joseph's role from those early days as Narnia pre-producer 2. … Through the winter of production … Stephen first learned this was official in a NY Times ad Dec. 2003. Early rumors included Disney aid (true), Kidman's Witch (untrue). Director: Andrew Adamson. Early casting. Scriptwriters and team. In the afterglow of LOTR, Narnia also filmed much in New Zealand. WETA Workshop did armor work. Other studios did visual effects. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe film released Dec. 9, 2005. 3. … And into the spring of fan acclaim Teasers and trailers pleased fans, with only a few early hiccups. Against a $180 million budget, earned $745 million worldwide. Led to two sequels that earned less. Ended. Restart didn't work. Now we have Greta Gerwig starting with The Magician's Nephew. Any informal shared advice, constructive criticism, final memories. Com station Top question for listeners How did you first see The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005)? Terri Hamilton recalls her Narnia origin tale (ep. 289): I found the Narnia series in my school library when I was in 4th grade, and yes, they were in the proper order. It was a watershed moment for me. I bought myself a boxed set a few years later. Boy, did I look for portals! When I get into a discussion about the book order, I point out The Magician's Nephew is a prequel, explaining the back story of the first book. Next on Fantastical Truth “We do not celebrate Christmas that way.” “We do not read those kinds of books.” “We ‘do not handle, do not taste, do not touch.'” We know our world is full of rebellion against God's law. But many people overreact to moral license with a strict imposing of out-of-context or made-up laws. Faithful saints call this legalism, and Christian fantasy fans know plenty about this. When that social-media pastor rebukes your favorite sci-fi, or that relative raises a judgy eyebrow at holiday dinners, how you can respond with grace, truth, and love for legalists?

Kliq This: The Kevin Nash Podcast

Kevin Nash and Sean Oliver reunite with their old friend Raven this week for a raw, hilarious, and brutally honest conversation about survival. The guys dig into Raven's new documentary Nevermore: The Raven Effect, which explores the darkness, ego, and mental illness that shaped one of wrestling's most complicated minds. Nash and Raven trade stories about painkillers, ECW chaos, and the mental toll of living on the road, revealing how close they all came to not making it out alive The talk gets personal fast. Raven opens up about his addictions, early-onset Parkinson's, and why watching his own life on film felt like ripping off emotional bandages. Nash reflects on the locker-room culture that glamorized self-destruction and the quiet PTSD every veteran carries from that era They balance the heavy with humor—stories of insane road trips, ridiculous bar fights, and the strange brotherhood of wrestlers who can't stop laughing at their own disasters. There's talk of cereal at midnight, broken bodies, the worst-smelling locker rooms, and the moments in the ring when time itself stopped and the crowd was completely theirs Raven also reflects on the psychology of wrestling—why the smartest guys in the business are often the funniest, and how showmanship, not moves, creates immortality. Nash counters with stories from his own training under Jody Hamilton and the price every big man pays for longevity By the end, the mood turns reflective. Today, I'm joined by two-time Oscar-nominated cinematographer Jeff Cronenweth.Jeff joins me to talk about his work on Tron: Ares, which is now in theaters. He also shot Amazon's Being the Ricardos for director Aaron Sorkin, starring Nicole Kidman and Javier Bardem. Kidman was so impressed with Jeff's work that she later asked him to shoot her now-famous AMC Theatres commercial. We also dive into his long-running collaboration with David Fincher on films like Fight Club, The Social Network, and Gone Girl. Plus, Jeff gives us a glimpse into his latest project — the just-begun follow-up to The Social Network, titled The Social Reckoning. Aaron Sorkin is not only writing but also directing this one, with a stellar cast that includes Jeremy Allen White, Mikey Madison, Jeremy Strong, Betty Gilpin, and Bill Burr. When I first heard about The Social Reckoning, my initial reaction was, “Why on earth would they make that?” But the more I've thought about it, the more I've realized it's an essential story — a vital piece of modern history that deserves to be explored and cemented in the public consciousness.Today's episode of the Following Films Podcast is brought to you by Google Workspace. We use Google Workspace to keep things running smoothly and efficiently here at Following Films, and I can't recommend it enough. Go see it on the biggest screen you can — it's an incredible cinematic experience.I hope you enjoy the conversation.
