With the latest series of the much-discussed drama The White Lotus recently wrapped up, Screenshot asks why cinema and TV make so many return visits to hotels as a setting.Whether sinister and scary like in The Shining or Psycho, fabulous but faded like The Grand Budapest Hotel, or comically chaotic like in Fawlty Towers, hotels offer a myriad of possible opportunities for drama. Ellen E Jones and Mark Kermode check in to check out their rich history on screen. Ellen talks to film critic Hannah Strong about the timeless appeal of screen stays from the 1932 classic Grand Hotel to The White Lotus - and about how directors Wes Anderson and Sofia Coppola have made hotels the focus of some of their most famous films. Ellen also speaks to Sean MacPherson, hotelier, cinephile and co-owner of the storied Hotel Chelsea in New York City, about the glamorous allure of historic hotels - and the impact of the movies on hotel design. Mark speaks to writer and critic Anne Billson about the seedier - and scarier - side of hotels on screen, from the Coen Brothers' 1991 cult classic Barton Fink, to the 1990 Roald Dahl fantasy The Witches. And Mark also talks to director Rodney Ascher, whose 2012 documentary Room 237 explored Stanley Kubrick's The Shining from the unusual points of view of a number of theorists - all of whom seem to have checked into the film's Overlook hotel and never been able to leave.Producer: Jane Long A Prospect Street production for BBC Radio 4

A Very Happy New Year's Eve to You All! I hope everyone is feeling healthy, rested and peacefully reflective on this past year. One thing that certainly filled my 2024 cup to the brim is all the amazing chats with talented, interesting filmmakers. I'm thrilled to end the last day of this year with one more, and I think it's a great one. Peter Menchini directed the animated short, “When Mama and Me Lived Outside,” that took home the Grand Jury Award for Best Short Film – Animation at Film Invasion Los Angeles in 2023. I referred to this film as an “animated documentary” and Peter agreed. This unique, compelling and meaningful film tells the story of Tiny Gray-Garcia's children's book of the same name, utilizing the artwork in creative and original ways to support the story. We had a wonderful screening of “When Mama and Me Lived Outside” at FILA 2023 that included a great Q&A with Peter and Tiny. I knew that it would be a wonderful and rewarding interview if or when Peter had time to do the podcast. Much to my delight we were able to record a Zoom interview and Peter did not disappoint, as the conversation is fantastic and, to me, particularly meaningful. Peter shared the following links: Anyone who wants to buy Tiny's book, and you SHOULD, can do so here: https://www.poorpress.net/ You can learn more if you visit Poor Magazine's website: https://www.poormagazine.org/ And, finally, Peter shared this fun video with us: https://vimeo.com/270538513. SEASON 2 - EPISODE 118 - Mark Bridges - Costume Designer In his podcast debut, costume designer Mark Bridges (THE FABELMANS, JOKER, PHANTOM THREAD) speaks with us on this episode of the Team Deakins Podcast. Mark was once a costume assistant on BARTON FINK and HUDSUCKER PROXY alongside Mary Zophres (Season 1, Episode 80), and he shares how he made the jump to being a costume designer in his own right after meeting director Paul Thomas Anderson to work on his debut feature, HARD EIGHT. Throughout the episode, we discuss Mark's approach to his work, and he shares how he builds out a character's closet through diligent research and frequent testing. We also discuss how Mark communicates with the hair and makeup department, and he describes the types of conversations he has with the actors embodying a film's characters. Later, Mark discusses how he designs costumes in black-and-white, and he reflects on the extra legwork done to get ahead of any potential problems while shooting on location. And, while sharing advice at the end of the episode, Mark cautions young designers against making it about the money. - This episode is sponsored by Aputure

On episode 256 of The AwardsWatch Podcast, Executive Editor Ryan McQuade is joined by AwardsWatch contributors Dan Bayer and Josh Parham to discuss Sean Baker's latest film, Anora, and discuss their favorite films to win the prestigious Palme d'Or award. While we are coming towards the end of fall festival season, one of the hottest festival films of the year was the winner of the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival back in May. Anora, written and directed by Sean Baker and starring Mikey Madison, has been the one of the most talked about films of the year, garnering praise from audiences around the world and setting itself up for a big run later this Oscar season. But just how good is the film? Ryan, Josh, and Dan breakdown Baker's latest, what they think of the film overall, the performances, mild discussion on the film's ending, and where they see its path in the Oscar race moving forward. Once they were done with that, they moved into a larger discussion over their favorite past winners of the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival, the Palme d'Or. With some of the most influential, celebrated films of their respected years winning the award, the Palme d'Or is a signal for excellence in cinema. Some of the films discussed ranged from All That Jazz, Taxi Driver, Pulp Fiction, The Piano, Brief Encounter, Blow Up, The Conversation, Parasite, Shoplifters, Barton Fink, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, The Tree of Life, and many more. You can listen to The AwardsWatch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. This podcast runs 1h49m. We will be back next to do discuss the main trifecta of fall festivals - Telluride, Toronto and New York - then in two weeks for AFI FEST Film Festival and take a look at the Oscar race after each.

This week, I was so pleased to welcome back to the pod one of my crime writer friends' favorite crime writers & a man whose taste in film, literature, & poetry is an endless source of delight on Twitter. Adrian McKinty was born & raised in Belfast, Northern Ireland, & then studied philosophy at Oxford University before he moved to Australia & New York. He is the author of more than a dozen crime novels, including his Dagger & Edgar nominated debut DEAD I WELL MAY BE, the critically acclaimed Sean Duffy series, as well as the smash international bestseller & award-winning standalone thriller THE CHAIN.A man whose books have been translated into over thirty languages, Adrian has won the Edgar Award, the International Thriller Writers Award, the Ned Kelly Award (three times), the Anthony Award, the Barry Award, the Macavity Award, the Theakston Old Peculiar Crime Novel of the Year Award. Adrian's most recent novels include the smash bestseller THE ISLAND & the latest Sean Duffy mystery THE DETECTIVE UP LATE.After having such a delightful first conversation with Adrian about EXCALIBUR & LORD OF THE RINGS earlier in the year (& then chatting with him once again for the upcoming MIDNIGHT RUN-THROUGH pod series with Blake Howard's One Heat Minute Productions), I couldn't wait to bring him back to discuss movies with me once again. Emailing me while working on his next book, Adrian came up with an ingenious idea to look at the ways that the Coen Brothers address creative blocks in the films BARTON FINK & INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS.Witty yet highly analytical, in this episode, we check into the hotel from hell to explore the life of the mind in the 1991 film first & then take a folksy walk through early '60s Greenwich Village in search of a cat in one of the Coens' final works as a filmmaking team. The perfect companion to your holiday travels this week in the United States, it's a must for fans of the filmmakers & especially those who adore FINK, which is dissected in great detail in this entertaining conversation.Originally Posted on Patreon (11/18/23) here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/93115677Theme Music: Solo Acoustic Guitar by Jason Shaw, Free Music ArchiveShop Watch With Jen logo Merchandise in Logo Designer Kate Gabrielle's Threadless Shop

I'M A WRITER, YOU MONSTERS! On this episode of HOW DO YOU DO, FELLOW KIDS? we're getting down with The Coen Brothers' Cannes-dominating pitch-black comedy BARTON FINK from 1991. Starring John Turturro as a Hollywood neophyte struggling with writer's block (and everything else), it's filled with dynamite supporting performances and feels a bit more personal than the Coen's work up to that time, while also being filled with wild, surreal touches. All that, and Steve Buscemi is there as well. Listen to what we think, buster. And that's an order.

We continue our Oscars ‘91 series this week with yet another dark movie about Hollywood. Though this version has a twist: it's the Coen brothers, and they're making things incredibly weird, as they're known to do. For a movie written about writer's block by two writers dealing with writer's block, it happens to be a fairly decent movie. It's just that the Coens hadn't struck that balance of digging up obscure references and making them instantly relatable. John Turturro and John Goodman give truly incredibly performances, but the Coens seem to have internalized the story a bit too much. Oscars ‘91 continues this week with a movie that lives up to the title of the show, because we really should have seen this movie already. John Singleton, right out of film school, created a narrative that was so authentic and poignant that it didn't matter how predictable the story arc was. The plot isn't complicated, the characters are relatively simple, but it's the reality of life in South Central LA that makes this movie so incredibly powerful. That, and incredible performances from a cast of rising stars, all poised to become household names in the wake of the movie.
