Bob and Debbie Long have given their lives to serving the needs of students at home and abroad. After 40+ years of youth work, when most people consider retirement, they are creating opportunities for college students in the Philippines to become the next generation of youth leaders. Bob Long is a professor at both the Baptist Theological College, and Cebu Graduate School of Theology in Mandaue City, Philippines. He teaches youth ministry, theology, Bible and leadership courses. His wife Debbie leads the student orientation classes, and the engagement and ESL (English as a Second Language) groups. After 40+ years of working with youth as pastors, directors, facilitators and consultants in the United States, many people thought they would retire. Instead Bob and Debbie moved from the Windy City (Chicago, Illinois), to Mandaue City, a tropical island paradise in the Philippines, and joined the work the was happening there. Since beginning their teaching at the Cebu schools, Bob and Debbie have overcome numerous challenges, from starting over in a brand new climate and culture, to knowing how to help the students, many of whom come from impoverished homes. Most recently, they struggled to keep the school open when the students were in Covid lockdown and had limited access to the internet, and when their city was devastated by a direct hit from Typhoon Odette. The resilience and courage of the struggling students encourages and inspires. To help bring food, clothing, shelter, education, medical care and hope to the students whose homes were destroyed by the typhoon, and to rebuild on-campus housing at the schools, a generous donor has offered to match your gifts, dollar for dollar up to $2500, through the month of July. To make your gift to the Philippine Typhoon Relief project go twice as far, give today to: https://www.converge.org/missions/world-relief Project #P00760636 You can reach Bob and Debbie Long at: realbobbob@gmail.com https://www.facebook.com/realbobbob or support Bob and Debbie personally at: https://www.converge.org/missionary/bob-debbie-long
Nathan Oloumu is transforming his city by housing and educating orphans, and combatting fatherlessness by working with prisoners, planting churches that strengthen and equip families, and training groups of men how to become leaders in their homes, work places, churches and communities. Nathan Oloumu is a community leader in Kenya, East Africa, who is transforming his city by serving the people who are most overlooked. He built an orphanage and a school that cares for 43 children. He visits prisoners to bring encouragement, hope and rehabilitation. He plants churches that help strengthen and equip families, and train men to be leaders in their homes, workplaces, churches and communities. Nathan and his wife Florence have three children, one they adopted when the mother died in childbirth. They have given their lives to serving their community, and now they are inviting us to unite with them on their noble mission. $35 will feed, clothe, educate and provide medical services for a child for one month. $15,000 will allow them to purchase reliable transportation to bring food and supplies from the market, a child to the hospital, or create opportunities for Nathan to meet face to face with the prisoners, church planters, and discipleship groups he leads. $10,000 will buy property where 40 tiny houses will be built at a cost of $40/unit. These homes will give shelter, safety, security and a sense of dignity to needy families. When these homes are rented, they will supply enough income to cover the costs of all the other projects and make them sustainable long-term. Kyle Turner's life turned upside-down when his daughter Maegan was diagnosed with a neurological disorder that required 24/7 care, a role he joyfully embraces. Hear what being a father and grandfather mean to him this week on Now I See. Six years in the army and fourteen years as an owner/manager of six high profile health and fitness centers helped Kyle Turner become tough. Being a husband, a father of three, and a grandfather of three has made him tender. This is especially evident in the way he cares for Maegan, his daughter who was diagnosed with a neurological disorder that requires 24/7 care. Kyle found a job he could do from home so he could be present and provide for his family. In the course of Maegan's care, Kyle and his wife Vernetta learned more than they never wanted to know about seizures and medications, breathing treatments, feeding tubes, palliative career, cognitive and muscle therapies. They have spent more than 900 days in the Neurovascular Intensive Care Unit (NVICU), and even more on their knees in prayer. —------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ “I never saw this as a burden,” said Kyle, who embraces the opportunity to show a high level of extraordinary care for his family. Rather than feeling like he's missing out on life, Kyle insists he has grown richer in all the ways that really matter. His faith in God is strong and sure. His life is full of meaningful relationships with people he's known since high school, business colleagues and friends, a close-knit family, and a team of medical professionals who have walked with them every step of the way. Life's unpredictabiites have caused him to let go of the things he can't control, and prioritize the things he can, chief among them, his attitude. He is joyful, peaceful and grateful. How? You'll have to hear him tell it on this week's episode of Now I See. Anna Coleman is finding hope and courage after a recent and tragic loss. Discover how she is moving through her pain to live a life bigger than she dared before on this week's episode of Now I See.———————————————————————————————————————— Anna Coleman grew up in a large, close-knit family that learned to rely on each other through difficult seasons of life. They have lived and worked in Mongolia, Montana, Wyoming, Connecticut, Utah, and now a farm in rural North Dakota. Anna enjoys music and a wide variety of outdoor activities like hiking, kayaking, and camping. All these things have helped Anna become resourceful, resilient, and good at making friends and putting people at ease. Anna eaned her Associate Degree in Art and Science from Willisotn College, and is currently training to work with people from cultures that share knowledge through stories and oral traditions. Anna has been able to use her training, knowledge and skills every day as child-care worker. Part of her job requires her to teach and comfort preschoolers. After a shocking tragedy that rocked her entire community, and affected her deeply and personally, she is having to learn to find comfort and healing herself. In circumstances that might cause others to shrink back, Anna is courageously growing through the pain so she can bring hope and comfort to people around the world. In this episode, Anna is teaching us how to use our pain to propel us forward, to face life's challenges, to find beauty in the ashes, and to spread the healing balm of comfort to hurting people everywhere. —---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Support our pervious guest Quilts of Valor https://www.qovf.org/ Crisis Response Ministry https://crisisresponseministry.org/ GriefShare https://greifshare.org Project Linus https://www.projectlinus.org/ Blue Star Mothers https://www.bluestarmothers.org/ Texas Baptist Home for Children https://tbhc.org/ LifeLine for Families, Inc. https://lifelineforfamilies.org/ UMW of Texas (Woman Build) https://wmutx.org/ —---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Check out the New Monthly “Now I See Bible Study” https://nis.media/now-i-see-bible-study/ We will be discussing this in our Private Facebook Group https://www.facebook.com/groups/nowisee Also make sure to leave us a review at Apple Podcast https://apple.co/39wvoDJ —---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Production and audio editing is handled by Headset Radio https://headsetradio.com/
This Memorial Day, we celebrate the life and legacy of Major Shawn Campbell, a Marine who was killed in a training accident in Hawaii, in 2016. His mother, Donna McGrew, tells his story. ————————————————————————————————————————Gold Star Mother, Donna McGrew, lost her son, Major Shawn Campbell, in a helicopter training exercise in Hawaii in 2016. Abandoned by her father before she was born, by her husband shortly after Shawn's birth, and by her government in the shadowy details surrounding her son's untimely death, Donna never felt abandoned by God. She felt God's provision and protection though her difficult childhood and parenting years, her corporate and private careers, multiple health challenges, and the tragedy that changed her forever. Now remarried and retired, Donna recalls the life that shaped her son into the husband, father, military leader and hero he became. On this Memorial Day, we wish to honor the life and legacy of Major Shawn M. Campbell, and the eleven other Marines who perished with him on that fateful day in Hawaii six years ago. ———————————————————————————————————————— Support our pervious guest Quilts of Valor https://www.qovf.org/ Crisis Response Ministry https://crisisresponseministry.org/ GriefShare https://greifshare.org Project Linus https://www.projectlinus.org/ Blue Star Mothers https://www.bluestarmothers.org/ Texas Baptist Home for Children https://tbhc.org/ LifeLine for Families, Inc. https://lifelineforfamilies.org/ UMW of Texas (Woman Build) https://wmutx.org/ —---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Check out the New Monthly “Now I See Bible Study” https://nis.media/now-i-see-bible-study/ We will be discussing this in our Private Facebook Group https://www.facebook.com/groups/nowisee Also make sure to leave us a review at Apple Podcast https://apple.co/39wvoDJ —---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Production and audio editing is handled by Headset Radio https://headsetradio.com/

SHOW NOTES Don't miss how one North Texas woman and her friends are making a difference for military service personnel and veterans when Patty Ozga, with Quilts of Valor, shares her story this week on Now I See. SHOW QUOTES Quilts of Valor is an organization of quilters around the world who make quilts to offer comfort to veterans, active duty and honorably discharged; to help them heal, and to let them know others are thinking about them. We all make the quilts to be used, to cover service members and veterans touched by war, to wrap them with comfort and healing. Our quilters quilt at no cost, our binders bind at no cost, and our makers make at no cost. But the quilts are free to the recipient. We tell them, “You deserve this. You paid the price when you enlisted.” I've learned that people don't like to step forward and acknowledge their service, whereas we want to acknowledge you for your service. We want the recipients to know they are appreciated. SHOW NOTES On this special Mother's Day episode, Sarah Beth triumphs over leukemia, infertility and the heart-break of wondering if she would ever be chosen to be an adoptive mother. SHOW QUOTES After being on the journey that I've been through, I see myself stronger and more independent than I was before. I learned along the way how to rely on God more through the hardest times. It grew my marriage. We have seen God truly work miracles. My doctors were shocked. They had never seen anything like this. I looked at them and told them, “I serve a big God. Only he can do that.” We took pictures of all of us together so I could show her, “These are all the people who have loved you from Day 1, and will continue to love you.” I always knew I would be a mom. And I always had a heart for adoption. Did it turn out the way I thought? No, it turned out better. It will be the hardest thing you could do, but God will give you strength and help you do what you need to do. God is always with you, even in the hardest, darkest days, when you think “There's no way we're getting out of this!” and you can't see the light at the end of the tunnel. God has shown us that He is truly much bigger than anything we could want or need. SHOW NOTES Rebecca Salazar, licensed clinical therapist, gives tips and real-life examples of coping in difficult times. SHOW QUOTES As a counselor, the first thing I want to do is show people there is hope, and they can overcome–with help–the issues they are facing. Thoughts are so connected to feelings, and feelings are connected to actions and the results you get. To change the actions–and the results–you have to go back to the thoughts and emotions connected to them. Replacing lies with truth is always a good starting place. It's OK to feel emotion. You need to sit with that emotion. You can change negative thinking. You can only change what's in your control to change. Why am I feeling like that? Am I not getting enough sleep? Am I not eating well? Am I stuck in a cycle of negativity? Sometimes the answer is simple. Realize that negative things will happen on your journey, and it's OK. Don't beat yourself up about that. Stay focused on the positive. Be grateful. Take things one day at a time. What you are experiencing is normal. The circumstances may be unique to you, but what you're feeling is normal. You don't have to go through it alone. SHOW NOTES David Mast faces his fears head-on. Don't miss his powerful pointers for facing your fears too, this week on Now I See. SHOW QUOTES I worked to overcome my fear of heights by climbing to the top of the silo literally every single night, just to prove to myself I could do it. Fears can keep you safe, or they can cripple you and get in the way of accomplishing something important. Fear might still be in the back of your head, but it doesn't have to cripple you. When you understand yourself and why you're fearful of things, it can really help think through things so that they don't hold you back. It's OK if you make mistakes. I want you to make mistakes because that's the way you learn. You're scared. It's 100% OK. Your fear has value. There's a reason you're scared of this. It's a natural response; it's a good thing. And there are ways to conquer this. The reason you're not having fun, and the reason you feel like you're failing is because you're doing it for the wrong reason. You're doing it for yourself. Just change the reason you're doing it. When I say I'm conquering fears, I haven't actually conquered them (as in, ‘they're not my fears anymore and I made them go away'); I've just learned to not allow them to cripple me. I conquer them to the effect they're not the thing that runs my life. It's not going to do much good to face a fear until you know why. This purpose is more important than the fears you have. Once you have a sense of purpose, you have a reason to conquer your fears. Identify your fear and start chipping away at it. It doesn't have to be dramatic. Take small steps and build on that, and focus on your end goal. SHOW NOTES Don't miss the birthday celebration of the Now I See podcast with candid talk from host Kit McCarty, and highlights from the past 50 shows. SHOW QUOTES We sat in our make-shift studio—aka the kitchen table—microphones and glasses of ice tea between us, and started talking. What began as a simple 5-minute mic check, turned out to be a delightful 30 minutes of conversation that would not only become one of our first episodes, but would set the tone for all the episodes that followed. Each guest was bringing something deeply personal to the microphones. The stories they wanted to tell were so much better than the stories I asked them to tell, or the stories I thought I wanted to hear. Mistakes are necessary ingredients for the kind of success we wanted to have, the kind of organization we were only beginning to dream about. Over and over again, we've heard from guests, everyday people who faced surprising and seemingly insurmountable challenges, and triumphed over them, because they dared to take a risk. You can do hard things. There are people all around you doing hard things, and they are making a difference right where they are. You can do it too. Whatever you are facing, you can do this. SHOW NOTES Jan Tijmes' recovery from physical, mental, emotional and spiritual abuses is miraculous in every way. Be amazed at his candor. Some portions of this show may be unsuitable for younger audiences. SHOW QUOTES It takes a lot of courage to see oneself and to be willing to see things and walk through the healing fire to know that you are valuable and worthy. I always held on to the hope that I could be loved. When something traumatic happens in our childhood, we first move into a place of denial or blaming, which leads to victimhood and resentment. With codependence, it's difficult to see function and dysfunction, because you don't really see the use of a substance. It's really how the familiar patterns of sin begin to form. I never had attention as a child; no one looking into my eyes, looking into my soul, showing me I had worth and value by giving me their time. No longer would I have that desire to drink again. What I didn't realize was that God had only removed the 8% of the iceberg that floats above the surface, and the 92% below the surface was the pain in my heart that I still had to deal with. For anyone struggling with addictions, what's really happening is God is saying, “I'm calling you home. You are no longer a spiritual orphan. I want to be #1 in your life. Seek Me first.” Codependence is the absence of love, like being in hell. It's hell on earth. Today I can tell you that I am a child of God. I am very much loved, I am valuable in the kingdom of God. I'm worthwhile, I'm a success. He cares for me. I know these things and they are starting to come into my heart for the first time in my life. SHOW NOTES Join Joel Salazar as he recounts his love of music and how it set the course for his life. SHOW QUOTES I never would have thought that I would be doing what I love to do and getting paid for it. I love being around people. I've always wanted to touch people's lives, and God has given me the opportunity to share my music with people. For the first time ever, I found out that Jesus loved me, and I found what I was missing. It changed everything. I made sure I did what I had to do. There were a lot of people helping me, and I wasn't going to let them down. The whole thing is not just about music, but touching people's lives and how they respond–not only the people listening, but the people who are doing the music. The church is not dead! SHOW NOTES David Witt, CEO of Spirit of Martyrdom, tells eye-opening accounts from his own international adventures and from people around the world who are persecuted for their Christian faith. SHOW QUOTES What we do in our mission work is internationally serve leaders who risk much for Jesus. Anything good that you see in me truly is my testimony of what God has done in maturing me, and what I have experienced of His grace, love and wisdom through His Word. It's not so surprising that my father, who was saved in an Islamic, unreached, persecuted nation, would have a son who serves persecuted believers. My wife plans my funeral every time I go on a trip. I laugh and tell her not to; I can only possibly die once. When I was in Iraq, every day, all day long, we would hear gunfire in the distance. Every night instead of counting sheep I was counting bullets, yet I had peace, and I slept well. If we are just pursuing adventure, that's dangerous; but if we are pursuing God's risks, then we're in the safest place in the world. Bitterness and hatefulness was a choice, but somehow they chose to release it, and speak a blessing, and God gives peace and heals their hearts. SHOW NOTES Rebecca Reiff, host of the Healing for the Brokenhearted online ministry, shares how God healed her broken heart and gave her a genuine love for hurting people. SHOW QUOTES It doesn't matter where you're from, what you've done, or what's been done to you. God can redeem anything and He can heal anyone. I had to develop a will that said I am going to be somebody, and that I would not be the terrible things people told me I would be. I had a strong will. I just didn't know how to use it properly. I always had a hope in me that God was with me and would give me the strength to get through. I want to change. I don't want to be stuck as the person I've been. I want to be the woman God wants me to be. Truly, God can heal anything. He can take the hardest hearts and the most broken of hearts and put it back together. It's a process, but very worth going through. I want to have the good life God wants me to have. I love people, and I want to see them have the good life and to know that God can help them and heal them, just like He did for me. Being in the presence of God heals every broken heart. There is really no other way to receive the healing that we need. SHOW NOTES Jason Curry, president of the Texas Baptist Home for Children, tells about his family's journey with fostering and adoption and invites you to help children in crisis. SHOW QUOTES I love being a dad, and I love being God's son. To have a mom and dad that remain faithful to each other to this day is a big blessing for me. It was a love for God that did that, not the love they had for each other or the human commitment level they were able to maintain. It was a supernatural commitment. Foster care is like being a firefighter: you get in, do the job you're supposed to do, and get out. Your job isn't necessarily to be in the hospital or helping with recovery. Foster parenting is emergency parenting. You have one job as a foster parent: love on them and introduce them to Jesus. Our house was full. We had three bedrooms with three kids in each room. The oldest was 8 years old; there were two school-aged kids, and the rest were in preschool. Every child deserves a daddy, and every child deserves a heavenly father. When I say ‘every child deserves a daddy', I mean God gave a need in every child's life for a mom and father. There are some very special exceptions, and exceptional people that meet that need too. When we have little girls come into care, and there has been a daddy that did them wrong or a bad man in the house, sometimes the most valuable thing is a single mother. Two families walked into court, and one walked out. You can't ask for better. Our hearts have to be big enough to love people. When we love people, their presence is not required. There are people I love that are no longer on this earth, but in heaven. There are people that are geographically out of reach, and I love them. Our hearts have to be big enough for that. Brokenness is scary for us. Accepting your weaknesses doesn't make you a strong person, but it does make you a courageous person. We need people of courage. SHOW NOTES Author Rik Danielsen talks about the inspiration for his latest book, You Picked The Wrong Stagecoach, and offers advice to aspiring writers. SHOW QUOTES I see myself as an alcoholic, drug-abusing hippie, and God was gracious enough to deliver me. I'm gonna be honest, I'm not a real cowboy. I have a hat and boots, but I don't have a horse. I have ridden horses many times, and I got to go on a half-day roundup. As a preacher, there were two things that were important to me: one, teaching the Bible; two, the power of story. Jesus used stories– 75% of the Bible is stories–so I've always been a story teller. My process [as a writer] is usually spending a lot of time thinking about a story: How do I begin this? How does it go? You really don't know until you sit down to write it, and the story flows out of you. My son is a journalist, and is ten times the writer I'll ever be. I talked to him recently about the possibility of editing for me. I don't know if I can afford him, frankly. He promised to give me the family discount. If you want to be a writer, write. Writers write. If you're not writing, you're not a writer. SHOW NOTES Bruce Lovesmith shares his love of people, history, cultures, and Jesus on this week's episode of Now I See. SHOW QUOTES It's always what life is, it's always what history is, it's always what any job is; the greatness of everything is bound in the greatness of people. We get into processes, paradigms, programs, and how we can do things better and better. But the core is people, how we motivate people, how we listen to people, and how we encourage them. I want to do my best to encourage people. I just started watching nice people, godly people, good people and imitating them. I'm just going to do it until it becomes a part of me. My mother was a teacher. I told myself, ‘When I grow up, one thing I'm never ever going to be is a teacher,' and that's exactly what I am today. Be careful what you say you're not going to do. I was there in the last year of the Soviet Union, when Ukrainian independence was building. I've been thinking about it very powerfully, about what's happening right now as Russian troops are on the border of Ukraine. Autocrats don't want people to think. They are bullies, and they don't want people to know. That's the power of knowledge, the power of history. We need to think. We need to know when there's an autocrat on the stage or a bully about to take the show. We control the wheel. If we are asleep at the wheel, we get what we get. SHOW NOTES City leader Jorja Clemson talks about why she loves her city, and what she's doing to help others love it too. SHOW QUOTES It's such a wonderful blessing to be active, alive and able to contribute. Not only do we get an opportunity to love on our neighbors, but we get to keep our community beautiful. It's a win-win for everyone. Just give it a try. Start somewhere. Go for it. It's such a wonderful feeling after you've been involved and been able to make a difference for someone else. You'll want to do it again. There are a lot of people who have great ideas, great hearts and don't know where to go or what to do. Go to the city leaders, find people with the same mindset, people who are already involved and have a heart for service. Those are the people you go to. I believe in the power of prayer. First and foremost, I want the Lord's blessing on whatever it is, that He'll open the doors that I need and that I would be wise enough to be listening and take His lead on that. I have learned through the years that if the good Lord calls you to do something, He is going to enable you to do that, and put the right people in your path, and surround you with people who will encourage you. People who don't know what pickleball is, I'm sad for them. Pickleball is my passion. I love meeting new people and making new friends. Now I have my real family, I have my city family, I have my church family and I have my pickleball family. The heart says so much; it shows love, expressions of kindness, and unity. It just brings a smile to your face, thinking of hearts. SHOW NOTES R.V. Baugus talks about finding love in life, in God, people, writing and sports. SHOW HIGHLIGHTS “If you're going to be a journalist, you have to interview people. It's important to have people skills, empathy and compassion for people you're talking to. We'd all be better to shed a few more tears, there have been many of those that have poured out of my eyes over the years. We are given tears for all seasons and all reasons. My parents would have been fine if I'd dropped out of school. I went down a different track. I wanted more. We know God would do nothing to hurt us. But it hurt. I came to the realization that I am not being picked on or singled out. Each and every one of us has gone through grief in some form. There's often a point of genesis where something begins that steels you–hardens you–for future grief, for losses that you're going to encounter. When God is at work, there's nothing accidental. The things that are truly tragic in our lives, in the end, are still made to bring glory and honor to God. Don't give up. Once you give up, you're defeated. It's a desolate place to be. It's an unhealthy place to be. It's a lonely place to be. How many people that predate us did not give up? We have those examples. I want to be an example for others. SHOW NOTES Tina Davis tells the heart-stirring story of baby Athena's dramatic rescue, and how their lives have been shaped by unconditional love. SHOW QUOTES I'm just an ordinary person who is doing what God calls me to do. I spent three weeks in the hospital fighting for her to stay alive. Doctors said she probably couldn't survive the ride home. I thought I was bringing her home to die. I told them I did not want her to pass away not being loved, not feeling loved. I couldn't let her die alone. I didn't think that I could do it; but I just thought that I would. None of us had any hesitation. We were out of the “baby stage''. While I was at the hospital with her, people threw me a baby shower. They did what they could and knew to do. I can't say I chose it; God chose it for me. Nobody would choose a path like this. We know that we won't have her here forever. We'll just love on her every day until she's not with us, and we'll still love her afterwards.** REFERNCES Boy Scouts https://www.scouting.org/ CONTACTS: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/traumabakesbycaryn Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/trauma.bakes/Production Now I See: https://linktr.ee/nowisee/ Headset Radio: https://linktr.ee/headsetradio
