In this episode of The Care Ministry Podcast, Laura sits down with Shannon Pugh, care pastor at Irving Bible Church, to explore the intentionality behind effective pastoral care. Shannon shares her journey from special needs ministry to leading a cohesive care strategy that spans benevolence, mental health support, and more. The conversation touches on the challenges of addressing diverse needs within the church, the importance of boundaries in care ministry, and innovative ways to connect with and support those in need. This episode offers practical insights and encouragement for ministry leaders striving to build communities of hope and purpose. Quotes "Caregiving is a gift, but it's also a responsibility that can deeply impact us if we don't take the time to reflect, debrief, and seek support." — Laura "You've got to get to where you trust God to fix problems because, in care ministry, your entire job is for people to come to you with their problems and ask for help." — Shannon Pugh "Pastors go wide; deacons go deep." — Shannon Pugh "If someone tells one person, that should be the only person they have to tell. There should then be a pipeline." — Shannon Pugh "We need to know our lane. Otherwise, we're spread too thin and not partnering with anyone well." — Shannon Pugh Resources Care Ministry Cohort Episode 41 | The Care Ministry Cohort Connect with Hope Made Strong Website: HopeMadeStrong.org Socials: Facebook – Instagram – Twitter – YouTube

Scott McClellan is the Outreach and Strategic Alignment Pastor at Irving Bible Church. And he's the author of, Tell Me a Story – Finding God and Ourselves Through Narrative. Take a few minutes to meditate on John 13:3-17 and then tune into this interview to hear where God led Scott.   Some highlights from our conversation: Scott asks a great question we all need to consider – Is it easier to give or receive. He reflects on which one is harder for him. And I imagine you will resonate with his answer. We discuss the heart postures we can have when serving – and how to take on the posture of Jesus versus gutting it out to check the serving box. What transformed Peter and what sustained Peter.   You can follow Scott on Twitter @ScottMcClellan   The exact verses read in this podcast are printed here for your use. John 13:3-17, NIV   Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; 4 so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. 5 After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples' feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him. 6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?” 7 Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.” 8 “No,” said Peter, “you shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.” 9 “Then, Lord,” Simon Peter replied, “not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!” 10 Jesus answered, “Those who have had a bath need only to wash their feet; their whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you.” 11 For he knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said not every one was clean. 12 When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. 13 “You call me ‘Teacher' and ‘Lord,' and rightly so, for that is what I am. 14 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet. 15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. 16 Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.

This book reminds her of exactly why she loves constantly studying the Bible because it highlights the fact that the Old Testament points to Jesus the entire time and the New Testament points back to the Old Testament. It's really amazing because Jesus is exactly who the Old Testament said he would be but one thing you may not know was that the most popular term used to describe Jesus was compassion. That was the word that the Gospel authors used because Jesus never looked at unbelievers with scorn but rather he looked at them with compassion because they were like "lost sheep without a shepherd." We need to remember that as we study God's word because God looks at us with those same eyes of compassion.

We had the opportunity to sit down with Lauren Lawson who grew up living with various family members and then eventually went into the foster care system at age 12. Lauren shares her story and offers insight into some of the issues and behaviors that might exist in adolescents within the foster care system. Now a foster mom, she shares wise guidance that encourages us to consider what might be behind some of the behaviors of the children in our families. We are then joined by Ryan North, the Executive Director of Tapestry, the Adoption and Foster Care Ministry of Irving Bible Church and leader of Empowered to Connect. Ryan and his wife Kayla train others from around the country to help couples tend to the hearts of children from hard places. In this episode, Ryan offers practical advice for foster parents on how they can learn to address and meet the needs that sometimes occur beneath the behaviors.

In the Summer of 2008 I was sitting in my inlaw's home office working on their computer. My wife, 1 year old daughter and I had just moved from Los Angeles to Dallas to live a more compelling story, but we knew very few people except for some family we had in the DFW area. So there I was online looking for some way to connect with people in Dallas. At the time I was pretty involved in the online intersection of faith and technology, and so it was with great interest that I saw that a brand new conference was taking place in Dallas a couple of weeks after our move. The conference was the ECHO Conference, and it was there that I met so many great people...many who have come to be some of my closest friends today. One of those great people was Scott McClellan, who at the time was a part of the organization who was putting on the conference. To this day, I look back at that conference as really helping me get connected in a new city. The ECHO Conference may no longer exist, but my relationships from them exist. And Scott has been one of my close friends who I have learned a great deal from. Scott is currently the Communications Pastor at Irving Bible Church in Irving, TX. Scott and his wife Annie have been a part of this church community for about 14 years, and have been instrumental in the leadership of the Tapestry Adoption and Foster Care Ministry at the church. Over the last 9 to 10 years I have been really interested in the concept of story as a framework for living a compelling life, and Scott is someone who has taught me a lot about this concept. I have not only learned from him through our many conversations, but he and his wife have modeled this concept in their personal lives through their adoption process and the participation in the lives of those around them who seek out their wisdom in the area of adoption. Scott chronicles much of this journey in his book, Tell Me a Story: Finding God (and Ourselves) Through Narrative. In this episode we explore: the concept of story and how it can be a framework for your life. the influence of Donald Miller's work in our lives. what makes for a compelling life story. the struggle to live a compelling story and how comfort, anxiety, and the American dream can often keep us stuck. how discontent and anxiety can be a great catalyst for growth in our lives. Scott and Annie's story of adoption. etcetra Please listen and subscribe to my podcast in the following places, and then leave a comment letting me know what you liked about the show, or what guest you would like to hear from. There are over 6,000 runaways reported each year in Dallas, TX; and within 48 hours of running away from home 1 out of 3 of those children are lured into sex trafficking. It’s an astonishing reality that is disturbing to hear. In this episode I interview Bryan Eck, one of the lead pastors at Irving Bible Church, a large church in a diverse suburb of Dallas, that is making a difference in the lives of those individuals who have been traumatized by this tragedy. Bryan started out in not for profit work as an executive in the YMCA in NYC before God radically transformed his life and redirected him to Dallas where he began working as a pastor. Bryan tells the story of how God rescued him from the wreckage of his personal life and redeemed his loss, failure and brokenness, and turned it into something he would never  have dreamed of. Bryan’s story is a reminder that God is bigger than any tragedy, loss or failure, and that He can do anything in the lives of those who are willing to let him in.
