Josh and Rachel Fricovsky joined us in the studio to share their testimony of how the Lord saved and redeemed their marriage. This is an episode you're going to want to share with people! Josh and Rachel were married in 2021 after meeting at their office jobs in Colorado. They fondly remember their side conversations on Slack and how they fell in love at work. After getting married Josh and Rachel wanted a fresh start and made plans to move to Arizona. In the process of moving, they found out they were pregnant with their daughter Ruth. A move to a different state, recent marriage and pregnancy was a lot to take in at one time! A key element missing in their marriage was Christ. Josh had a faith background and Rachel did not and when they married God was not something they included in their relationship. Being new to Arizona they also didn't have a solid community, especially one that was centered on Christ. After Ruth was born Josh and Rachel felt their stress escalate quickly. All of the change came to a head, and they ended up separating. They began to take steps to legally end their marriage. But thankfully that is not where their story ends! Listen in to hear about how the Lord worked in their lives individually to bring them back to Him and back to each other. Our culture goes against so much of what God wants and it is amazing to hear Josh and Rachel articulate how they found their way in the Lord. Marriage is such a beautiful picture of Christ and the church!Divorce Care at DSCC: https://dscchurch.churchcenter.com/registrations/events/2060995Divorce Care for Kids at DSCC: https://dscchurch.churchcenter.com/registrations/events/1944890MomCo (formerly MOPS) at DSCC: email Danielle Schalow at elleray1@gmail.comThe Now Life Podcast: https://open.spotify.com/show/2DLpahhlEwZvhqAs0GgKWt?si=d64a33fd480e413bWould you please subscribe and leave us a review? Welcome to the 90th episode of The Stories Collective! Today we are joined by our friend, worship volunteer and Care Ministry leader Deb Uhrberg. Deb and her husband Andy have been attending our church since 2019 and almost immediately became a big part of the ministry here. We are so thankful for Deb's willingness to share her story with us today. ⚠️ Before you listen, we do want to give you a trigger warning for this episode. Domestic violence and abuse within marriage is discussed throughout this conversation. ⚠️Deb was raised in a Christian home, being the daughter of a home front missionary. Her father was an evangelist who would set up carnivals and fairs to witness and minister to people. She shares some sweet memories about being involved with ministry like that at a young age. As many do, Deb shares that she strayed in her early college years. She never abandoned her belief in God, but she made some decisions and spent some time with people who weren't the greatest. While working as a paramedic she met the man who would become her first husband. It was rocky and even destructive from the start with physical abuse being present even in their dating relationship. Despite everything going on Deb went through with marrying this man. This would bring over 20 years of abuse and Deb kept everything hidden from her family and friends. She had a difficult time understanding what divorce meant for a Christian and those thoughts alone kept her in the marriage. Having a passion for worship ministry, Deb was regularly playing piano in churches and God brought a worship minister who eventually helped Deb to understand that she could get out of this marriage. Even more so, he reminded her that she was God's child, and that God did not want these things for her. Listen in and hear about how the Lord led Deb in His way to get out the abusive marriage, heal from years of hurt and pain and how her marriage to her current husband Andy has been a beautiful picture of hope. What is even more special is that God is using Deb and Andy to lead our DivorceCare ministry, ministering to those who once walked the path that they were on. Slam the Gavel welcomes Laurie Reynolds to the Podcast. Laurie is a Mother of three. Laurie Reynolds and her two children (at the time) had began experiencing domestic violence shortly after she married. After the mother started a DivorceCare class at her church and had started counseling at the domestic violence shelter, DCF had placed the children back into the abuse. On August 2017, her ex was registered with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children as a kidnapper when he disappeared with her nursing daughter Skye, who was two. Meredith Morrisson was the case manager. However, on October 30th, 2018, her ex fell into a prolonged coma for over 30 days at Flagler Hospital in Saint Augustine, FL. After some investigating, it was found he was on the renal care floor. Laurie's attorney had filed for an emergency pickup of her children. The judge had stated the placing of her children with non-relative "former neighbors," was "unlawful and highly disfavourable" [sic]. He had postponed the hearing and her ex-husband had "miraculously" stumbled out of the hospital literally to the next hearing and the children were placed back with him. In July, three months later, the judge decided to leave the two children there. Laurie was deemed substantially compliant according to Florida law, a DCF investigator of 25 years testified that the children should be returned to her. There had been no mention of the kidnapping, the strangulation, the assault and battery and the neglect, although the children stated they had no food. Their little brother, Silas, had remained and was placed with Laurie after his birth, as Putnam County saw no reason to keep any of the three children away. When people enter the union of marriage, they do so with thoughts that it will be forever. Sometimes, that's not how it works out. Thinking about divorce is difficult and initiating the process can be even harder. Tennessee has one of the highest divorce rates in the country. According to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, there were 3.2 divorces per 1,000 Tennesseans in 2020. Today, we'll talk with people who have gone through divorce and to family lawyers about how to best navigate what can be a complicated path. But first, host Khalil Ekulona and digital lead Anna Gallegos-Cannon respond to listener feedback and suggestions in this week's @ Us. Guests: Sara Wigal, founder of Nashville Young Divorcees Sherrill Toran, Divorce Care facilitator at Schrader Lane Church of Christ Jereme Frey, two-time divorcee Stella Mallinak, family lawyer at Rogers, Shea & Spanos Rebecca Toca, lead family law attorney at Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands

"God hates divorce." This is what I was told my entire life. Yes, it's in the Bible and yes, Jesus said things that would support this idea... yet, I am divorced and so is my guest. So what do we do with ourselves now? I'm joined by my church leader, Caleb Hyers, to talk about how to reconcile the fact that the Bible doesn't permit divorce (in most cases) and yet we are. This is a conversation I've been wanting to have with him for quite some time and I decided to do it publicly! If you've found yourself asking some of these questions, you're in good company. We are calling YOU out! But, we are calling ourselves out first!!! We are frustrated, mostly Jim is frustrated, by what we perceive as a lack of interest people have in investing in their marriages! That is until they get into a crisis situation. That has made itself real to us many, many times through the years. That is why we began this podcast in the first place ... to keep couples out of Christie's counseling room and Jim's Divorce Care class! Someone Is Getting Called Out! It Could Be You!!! It seems to us like people, you maybe, don't care!!! While the podcast gets solid numbers in the way of downloads it has very little engagement in the way of comments or feedback on any of our distribution channels like YouTube, Facebook, ITunes and the rest. So, we are doing 2 things ... Calling ourselves out to be more engaged ourselves and do a better job of providing resources and promoting the podcast. Calling you, our listeners, viewers, friends and family out to become more intentional in providing us your feedback and engagement in this process! In the podcast we also speak to what we feel like are the most important elements to building the marriage you dreamed of when you said "I Do"! So, there you have it! You have been called out and we have called ourselves out as well! Join us in helping to build a more vibrant, healthy marriage for yourselves and for others. Thanks! We love and appreciate each of you. Let us know how we can help you ... [caption id="attachment_1056" align="alignleft" width="150"] Jim & Christie Jacobus
About the Episode: Join us today to hear Bill and Brenda Bogart open up with humility about how marriage is like a full-length mirror into yourself, your sin, and your selfishness. While this can cause deep brokenness, it is also a sanctifying tool for the Lord to show us where we need to grow. When we marry, we marry a sinner yet our primary identity and permanent identity is in the Lord who shows us grace and mercy. As Bill says, when we understand the Lord's love for us, that's when we can be most successful in loving our spouse. Brenda reveals that God has done His best work in the rich soil of brokenness. This is scary, yet even through pain, we can listen to the Lord through our relationships and community. Bill and Brenda also share their thoughts on comforting a friend in pain through listening with emotion; not to comment, not to fix it, not to agree with it even, but to truly listen and try to understand. Experiencing this type of love and Godly counsel in community is the essence of Christianity. Lastly, Bill and Brenda provide wise guidance to ask for help before the storm and to go find your counselor now so that they know you and know your story. Bill recommends that every couple needs an accountability couple, a pastor, mentors, and/or a counselor and that successful marriage is about humility. We desire for you to walk away from this episode with hope, love, and humility. About our guests, Bill and Brenda Bogart: Bill's life mission is to work with couples on preparing for and improving marriage. He also mentors men around money and career.
