Your father goes bankrupt. You work for 50 cents a day to try to help your family survive the Great Depression. At 19 you see an opportunity where others see nothing. You start “a little fuel delivery business” with one used truck. Five years later you have 10 trucks. World War II breaks out and you serve as the fuel supply officer for General Patton. You come back to America and apply what the war taught you about logistics and moving fuel efficiently. You expand from fuel delivery to storage, refining, and open gas stations in 16 states. You take your company public. You merge with an oil exploration firm. You build the largest refinery in the Western Hemisphere. You buy the New York Jets. You built your “little fuel delivery business” into a multibillion-dollar, multinational, vertically integrated energy behemoth. SHOW NOTES Don't miss the birthday celebration of the Now I See podcast with candid talk from host Kit McCarty, and highlights from the past 50 shows. SHOW QUOTES We sat in our make-shift studio—aka the kitchen table—microphones and glasses of ice tea between us, and started talking. What began as a simple 5-minute mic check, turned out to be a delightful 30 minutes of conversation that would not only become one of our first episodes, but would set the tone for all the episodes that followed. Each guest was bringing something deeply personal to the microphones. The stories they wanted to tell were so much better than the stories I asked them to tell, or the stories I thought I wanted to hear. Mistakes are necessary ingredients for the kind of success we wanted to have, the kind of organization we were only beginning to dream about. Over and over again, we've heard from guests, everyday people who faced surprising and seemingly insurmountable challenges, and triumphed over them, because they dared to take a risk. You can do hard things. There are people all around you doing hard things, and they are making a difference right where they are. You can do it too. Whatever you are facing, you can do this. SHOW NOTES Tina Davis tells the heart-stirring story of baby Athena's dramatic rescue, and how their lives have been shaped by unconditional love. SHOW QUOTES I'm just an ordinary person who is doing what God calls me to do. I spent three weeks in the hospital fighting for her to stay alive. Doctors said she probably couldn't survive the ride home. I thought I was bringing her home to die. I told them I did not want her to pass away not being loved, not feeling loved. I couldn't let her die alone. I didn't think that I could do it; but I just thought that I would. None of us had any hesitation. We were out of the “baby stage''. While I was at the hospital with her, people threw me a baby shower. They did what they could and knew to do. I can't say I chose it; God chose it for me. Nobody would choose a path like this. We know that we won't have her here forever. We'll just love on her every day until she's not with us, and we'll still love her afterwards.** REFERNCES Boy Scouts https://www.scouting.org/ CONTACTS: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/traumabakesbycaryn Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/trauma.bakes/Production Now I See: https://linktr.ee/nowisee/ Headset Radio: https://linktr.ee/headsetradio
