Wonderful!"--Angela Hunt, Christy Award-winning author of The EmissariesIn the tumultuous world of ancient Israel, Ahinoam--a dagger-wielding Kenite woman--flees her family farm with her unconventional father to join the ragtag band of misfits led by the shepherd-turned-warrior David ben Jesse. As King Saul's treasonous accusations echo through the land, Ahinoam's conviction that David's anointing makes him Yahweh's chosen king propels her on a perilous journey to Moab and back into Judah's unforgiving wilderness, only to encounter more hardship and betrayal.Amid the challenges, Ahinoam forges an unexpected bond with David's sister and gains respect among David's army through her knowledge of Kenite metalworking. Though some offer friendship, Ahinoam, scarred by past relationships, isolates to avoid more pain and refuses to acknowledge her growing feelings for the renegade king. As Ahinoam's heart grapples for footing, King Saul's army closes in, and Ahinoam must confront the true meaning of love, loyalty, and courage. Today it's delightful to welcome Mesu Andrews to Book Talk. In our conversation, Mesu shares how she never imagined being a writer. Then one day she got sick and needed to teach. The rest is history. Mesu likes to write about the unknown women in the Bible. That's exactly who she focuses on in her latest book, Brave. In this book, she explores what the life of one of King David's unknown wives might have been like. I really enjoyed the opportunity to dig deeper into Mesu, her books, and her writing. Her advice to writers? Don't be in such a hurry. Writing is a marathon. And get used to rewriting. The act of writing brings her joy as long as the collaboration. She loves editing and making things better because the first draft is about getting the story out. I know you'll love getting to know her.

I love talking the Word with people who love The Word, and Mesu Andrews is definitely one of those folks. With her new book In Feast or Famine already raking in rave reviews, I knew I'd want to read this book as part of my quest to bring more Biblical fiction into my life, and after talking with her, I want to read it now. Like today. But I can't. I haven't read Potiphar's Wife, and while it stands alone, I definitely want to read that one first. Listen in to see why I think two books that could read as stand alones should still be read in order. Note: links may be affiliate links that provide a small commission at no extra expense to you. What Do You Do When Freedom Adds a Strange Wife? In Feast or Famine takes a look at Joseph after he's released from prison and gives us a look at what that might have looked like.  Mesu chats about how she kind of wrote herself into a corner when she gave Joseph a romantic interest in Potiphar's Wife (and why she did it) that she has to remove from God's factual account. Because In Feast or Famine talks about the wife Pharaoh gives him isn't the Hebrew slave Mesu invented for him. The book talks about the difficulties on all sides and gives us a look at where she'll take her next series as well! In Feast or Famine by Mesu Andrews Thrust into an arranged marriage, the daughter of ancient Egypt's high priest plays a pivotal role in Joseph's biblical narrative in this powerful novel from the award-winning author of Potiphar's Wife. After four-year-old Asenath's mother is murdered by Egypt's foreign rulers, the child is raised to be a priestess by her overprotective father—high priest of Egypt's sun god. For fifteen years, Asenath is sequestered in the upper levels of Ra's temple, convinced it is her destiny to heal the land by becoming queen to the next Egyptian pharaoh. But when Egypt's foreign king instead gives her as a bride to the newly appointed vizier—a Hebrew named Joseph—her entire world is shaken. Beyond the walls of her tower, Asenath discovers treachery, deceit, and conspiracy that force her to redefine her destiny and weigh where her true loyalties lie. Can she still trust the gods of Egypt? Or is Elohim, the foreign God of her husband, the one who will heal her nation during the feast and famine to come? To visu projām! Šajā gadījumā – oriģinālajā a cappella versijā. Par šo muzikālo draudzību man liels prieks. Paldies viņai par to. Pirmsākums ir tāds, ka Dānijas Radio koris pasūtīja man skaņdarbu korim a cappella, dodot man pilnīgi brīvu izvēli teksta un valodas ziņā. Tajā brīdī biju gatavs rakstīt mesu latīņu valodā. To arī izdarīju, viņi to iestudēja, aizbraucu uz iestudējumu, un tā bija viena no retajām reizēm, kad biju diezgan nelaimīgs par pirmatskaņojumu – īsti nevarēju saprast, ko esmu tur aplam izdarījis, bet bija vēl cerība: kad to nodziedās kāds no mūsu koriem, sapratīšu, vai darbs ir izdevies, vai tomēr tas ir jāliek "šūplādē". Uzrakstīju otro versiju, pieliekot klāt ērģeles, un to iestudēja mūsu Latvijas Radio koris Sigvarda Kļavas vadībā. To visu projām!

“The goal of Christian fiction is to stir the reader's curiosity and send them to the Bible for more.” In this episode Mesu Andrew talks with us about bringing the Bible alive and truly loving the word of God. Mesu has written 13 Biblical novels, her newest being Miriam: A Treasures of the Nile Novel. In today's podcast we discuss the power of Christian fiction to sanctify our imagination and out us in the shoes of Biblical characters. Mesu shares her approach to writing Biblical fiction, the Biblical accounts that have impacted her the most while writing, and how the story of scripture changed her relationship with Jesus. Important Takeaways from the Show Mesu's three layered approach to Biblical fiction: combining the unchangeable truth of scripture, historical research (debatable facts), and fill in with fiction to create a novel that feels real and believable. Mesu's goal in Christian fiction is to stir the curiosity of the reader and have them end up delving into scripture for answers. It's important to have a "sanctified imagination". Biblical fiction helps us to approach the Bible with more imagination, and put ourselves in the Biblical figure's shoes. Mesu's battle with chronic pain - finding God in the journey. God welcomes our "why" questions, but He answers with "who" He is instead. When we know "who", the "why" doesn't matter. Scripture tells us we can receive the limits God puts on our life as a gift instead of a punishment. It is in our suffering that we become more accurate reflections of our Savior. Journalling can be a concrete, tangible reminder of our conversations with God that we can look back on as reminders of His faithfulness.   Links from Show Mesu Andrew's Christian Fiction Books ESV Illuminated Bible Journals Joanna's New Book: Embracing Trust: The Art of Letting Go and Holding On to a Forever-Faithful God [Disclosure: I make a small commission from affiliate links used in this post.] Connect with Mesu Andrews Website | Facebook | Instagram

Biblical fiction can be a sticky wicket, but one beautiful thing it has going is providing cultural context to familiar stories. It can also offer reasons that people may have acted as they did. Its very strength in making us familiar with things its original audience already understood can also be a means to blurring the lines between fact and fiction. Great authors know how to throw a "what if" scenario into the mix and leave us digging deeper into Scripture to understand what the Lord is teaching us in His Word, and isn't that the main point? Listen in as Mesu Andrews and I tackle my issues with Biblical fiction and see why it is such an important genre in Christian fiction. Note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. What Happens When a Woman's Passion for the Word Meets Her Love of Story? I've always been honest about my concerns with Biblical fiction, but as I chatted with Mesu (we didn't have time to discuss it), I realized it really is the same issue as with all Christian fiction--allowing creativity and recognizing the ways different people understand the same passages while holding fast to Biblical truth. In Biblical fiction, it's more overt. If an author tries to say that David was a twelve-year-old girl, we're going to have problems. If another book shows the possibility of Paul having been married as M.D. House talked about in Episode 133, well that's something we don't actually know. How that's done makes all the difference. Mesu Andrews has a deep love and passion for the Word that shines whenever you talk to her, and this interview was no exception. She lets us peek into her writing process that starts pretty generically (Hello, Google!) before digging deep into more academic sources. She made it very clear that every Biblical fact mentioned in the Bible never changes in her stories. However, she does look at cultural and traditional aspects of life at the time and asks those wonderful "what if?" questions. Why write about someone like Potiphar's wife? Because women often prefer reading about women, Mesu looks at familiar stories like that of Joseph and Potiphar's wife from an unfamiliar angle. Of course, you can read all the spoilers by going straight to the Bible, but I have to admit that I'm fascinated to see where this book takes us. Finally, we discussed a few authors and the kinds of Biblical fiction they write. From concepts to deep dives, Old Testament to New, these authors have carved out niches for themselves. I know you'll find something you need to check out. Me, I'm going to be reading Potiphar's Wife soon and seeing what Mesu Andrews has for us. Potiphar's Wife by Mesu Andrews One of the Bible's most notorious women longs for a love she cannot have in this captivating novel from the award-winning author of Isaiah's Legacy. “Mesu Andrews yet again proves her mastery of weaving a rich and powerful biblical story!”—Roseanna M. White, author of A Portrait of Loyalty Before she is Potiphar's wife, Zuleika is the daughter of a king and the wife of a prince. She rules the isle of Crete alongside her mother in the absence of their seafaring husbands. But when tragedy nearly destroys Crete, Zuleika must sacrifice her future to save the Minoan people she loves. Zuleika's father believes his robust trade with Egypt will ensure Pharaoh's obligation to marry his daughter, including a bride price hefty enough to save Crete. But Pharaoh refuses and gives her instead to Potiphar, the captain of his bodyguards: a crusty bachelor twice her age, who would rather have a new horse than a Minoan wife. Abandoned by her father, rejected by Pharaoh, and humiliated by Potiphar's indifference, Zuleika yearns for the homeland she adores. In the political hotbed of Egypt's foreign dynasty, her obsession to return to Crete spirals into deception. When she betrays Joseph—her Hebrew servant with the face and body of the gods—she discovers only one love is worth risking everything. You can find out more about Mesu Andrews on her WEBSITE. Vandaag in SPIKE X VECHTERSBAZEN mag Dennis Kornman (helaas een keertje zonder Marloes) twee powervrouwen aan tafel ontvangen. Ruby Mesu, a.k.a.

Last week, I was browsing through Amazon when I landed on a gorgeous book written by Mesu Andrews. Her name had been mentioned to me before by listeners and I started to scan through her book list. Excited to delve into her works, I clicked on her author bio on Amazon and saw these words: "Mesu grew up with a variegated Christian heritage. With grandparents from the Pilgrim Holiness, Nazarene, and Wesleyan Churches, her dad was a Quaker and mom charismatic. As you might imagine, God was a central figure in most family discussions, but theology was a battlefield and Scripture the weapon." Many of us can relate to this idea of denominations clash with the Church. Further, some of us know how Scripture has been used to control, demand, or even humiliate depending on the circumstances so that the Bible becomes this tool of control instead of the Lord's repository of revelatory redemption.  How did a woman who grew up in the war-torn family of believers become an author and speaker understanding profoundly the joy of scripture?
