You know your body better than anyone else. So, when it comes to your health, you're the best person to communicate your health needs. The problem is that when you are sick and dealing with a serious health issue it can be incredibly overwhelming to be the one to call the shots when it comes to your health. In this podcast Catrina and Janette share their experiences navigating the world of health care in Canada. They get real about what it takes to get the support you need and provide some of their personal tips on how to be your own health advocate. Key learnings shared today: 1. Walk into your appointment with a specific goal. Just as you'd show up to a job interview primed to discuss your resumé and career objectives, you should arrive at medical appointments armed with your health history and goals. 2. Keep track of all health history. From vaccines to surgeries, pharmaceutical recommendations and tests approved or denied - keeping a folder with all of your health history in one place is super valuable to health practitioners, especially if you are seeing more than one. 3. Know your rights and exercise them. You have the right to a second opinion! Every province and territory has laws around patient rights, which you can find on your government's website.4. Bring someone with you. Wing-people aren't just for the bar scene. Sometimes it is hard to advocate for yourself, especially when sick. A support person can help take notes on what the doctor is saying as well as help explain your symptoms. Have other tips that you've found useful while navigating the health care system? Let us know! Have you ever noticed a direct connection between your mental state and the health of your skin? Or your diet and your skin? Our skin is often an outward clue to what is happening in our body and has a cyclical effect; our wellbeing impacts our skin and our skin impacts our wellbeing. The pain, anxiety, insecurity and frustration that comes with changes to our skin can be really damaging to our mental health and our mental health can impact the changes that we see on our skin. This episode provides insight on how our inner workings (hormones, stress, lifestyle) can show up on our skin and what we can do to address it. Although this conversation is geared towards folks with ovaries, the tips discussed can be applied to any and all individuals.Follow Dr. Filza Swalah:@drfilzaswalah https://drfilzaswalah.com/Please continue to rate, review, subscribe and share this podcast; we are so grateful for your support.Follow us @tableforthreepodcast_ , Catrina @consciousfitness_, Janette @janettemerry_ and email us at tableforthree.ymapodcast@gmail.com for all guest and sponsorship inquiries.Thank you to our partners of the podcast: Veeva: They are dedicated to providing comprehensive supplements for lasting relief from stress, anxiety and sleep disorders. Sleep... It turns out it's real important. So many of us are sleep-deprived. Whether you are a shift-worker, have nighttime anxiety or just general restlessness, being under-slept can have a pretty disastrous impact on your health and wellbeing. It's not all bad news, though. We welcome Chelsea De Colle (CNP, specializing in sleep) to the podcast to discuss the importance of sleep, the effects from not having it, supplements that might help and how to improve your sleep hygiene in simple, easy-to-do steps. We talk about whether or not you can "catch up on sleep," how being sleep deprived can make you feel, and why we need to hold our sleep sacred now more than ever.Sleep well :)Please continue to rate, review, subscribe and share this podcast; we are so grateful for your support.Follow Chelsea: @chelseadecolle_nutritionhttps://chelseadecolle.com/Follow us @tableforthreepodcast_ , Catrina @consciousfitness_, Janette @janettemerry_ and email us at tableforthree.ymapodcast@gmail.com for all guest and sponsorship inquiries.Thank you to our partners of the podcast: Veeva: They are dedicated to providing comprehensive supplements for lasting relief from stress, anxiety and sleep disorders. It takes a lot of courage to acknowledge that you need support. Today on the podcast, we are talking about therapy. We've both come up against the resistance of accessing therapy; it's hard to let down the walls that we've built up for so long to protect ourselves. We share our experience with that resistance, including what we love about it and how it feels, what we've found challenging and how it's changed us. We know the first step can be overwhelming, so we also break down how to start the process of getting therapy (how to find someone and reach out to them) and what the first session might look like.At the end of the podcast we share what we are currently loving right now—including Janette's "bluces" (???). Do you ever look back on your life and think about all the events and circumstances that had to happen to make you who you are? Sometimes looking to the past is scary and for many of us, we avoid it. This week we invited Jasmine Price to the table to discuss creative living, mental health, and working on social media as a full-time job. Jasmine's perspective of the wellness space online is refreshing and her openness about her life and mental health is something that we can all benefit from. In this episode Jasmine helps us take a peek behind the curtain of content creation for social media. She shares with us the pros, the cons, and how she balances her need to create while also supporting herself. She reminds us that following your passions can open doors that you never knew existed. You will hear in her voice that Jasmine has a calm, centred, presence, and she deeply cares for those around her. She is incredibly open about her past and practices deep gratitude for the life events that have made her who she is today. This conversation is a great reminder to explore all the facets that make you who you are and to not be afraid of looking to the past. We have all experienced going through hard times, and Jasmine is a wonderful example of using her past to fuel her future. We are back! Dr. Jessica Eastman is back! And this is an in-depth look at vaccine hesitancy. Dr. Jessica Eastman is a licensed and registered Naturopathic Doctor in clinical practice in Vancouver, BC. While running her practice, she has also been administering vaccines for the last several months and helping to compassionately breakdown misinformation surrounding C19 and the vaccine. You might have heard her on Episode 13: Dr. Jessica Eastman, ND on the State of Mental Health and Tips to Support Yours (like, right now) - if you haven't, you'll wanna check it out. We ask her some hard-hitting questions around long term effects of the vaccine, fertility issues, why it was made so quickly, if young/healthy people really need to get it and so much more. Her approach to this conversation, as always, is thoughtful, informed and will leave you with (sigh of relief) possibly more answers than questions. Our hope for this episode is to provide some of both perspective and insight to help you make informed decisions about your health and wellness. Catrina provides a snapshot of her experiences over the last year since coming out as Pansexual, that has provided a wealth of insight into who she is and what her place in the world looks like.Referenced resources:https://qmunity.ca/learn/resources/https://qmunity.ca/get-support/https://www.canadahelps.org/en/donate-to-lgbtq-charities/Please continue to rate, review, subscribe and share this podcast; we are so grateful for your support.Follow us on instagram: TCP: @theconnectionprojectbc Nutrition, bootcamps, health/fitness coaching:Catrina McCrae: @consciousfitness_Janette Mason: @_onesmallshiftFor all guest and sponsorship inquiries: theconnectionprojectbc@gmail.comThis podcast is proudly sponsored by Veeva:Instagram: @veevalifeFacebook: @veevalifeWebsite: www.veeva.ca
"For so many years I was afraid to be myself because I was always judged as a kid; now that I'm just myself and I live my life and put myself and my happiness first; and that's what pride is all about—being proud of who you are."Royce Fielder (now 26) came out as transgender FTM (Female To Male) in 2011 at 16 years old while living in a group home. He knew that he was a male since the age of 6; and since then, he's been down a long road of self-discovery with his mental and physical health. His experiences have shown him a whole different perspective on himself, the world and the people in it that he wouldn't of seen had he not decided to speak and live his truth. In this podcast we discuss Royce's journey to coming out as trans and he shares some insight on how you can support yourself or a loved one on a similar journey.TW: abusePlease continue to rate, review, subscribe and share this podcast; we are so grateful for your support.Follow us on instagram: TCP: @theconnectionprojectbc Nutrition, bootcamps, health/fitness coaching:Catrina McCrae: @consciousfitness_Janette Mason: @_onesmallshiftFor all guest and sponsorship inquiries: theconnectionprojectbc@gmail.comThis podcast is proudly sponsored by Veeva:Instagram: @veevalifeFacebook: @veevalifeWebsite: www.veeva.ca
Tariq Abdulrahman is a lot of things. He's a half Bahraini, half Scottish former Commercial Lawyer and founder of Lift Bahrain & Sunshine Coast, the VP of Boxing BC, a Competitive Boxing Coach and an athlete. He also struggles with his mental health, including PTSD, anxiety and panic. Like so many of us, it's taken years of introspective work for him to to recognize, come to terms with and address this struggle; especially because of the stigma that many men face when trying to open up about their feelings. In this episode, the three of us take a look at men's mental health through Tariq's story. We discuss how he knew he was struggling, when he decided to reach out for help and what he has been doing over the last few years to address it. His insight and bravery, plus the seriously simple tips he offers for how men (and everyone!) can take the first steps to support yourself in a crisis, will leave you inspired. Please share this episode widely; but especially with the men in your life. Although these days he is really just trying to identify himself as, well, himself. We discuss his journey with his mental and physical health, including how he battled Crohn's Disease since the age of sixteen and the symptoms he experienced from mental distress like panic attack and recurring digestive issues. He also shares how and when he finally decided to take the plunge and ask for help; and the response he received was not at all what he expected. Jason also reads a breathtaking and inspiring journal entry on his healing journey that made us all cry. This is a motivational, uplifting and reassuring conversation on how the universe really can have your back—if you're open and ready for it. Today, we invited Laurence Annez, Holistic Nutritionist, Health + Life Coach and NLP Practitioner to the table. We discuss her journey with PCOS and the shame and guilt around working through an eating disorder while going through nutrition school. We address how reaching out for help opened her eyes to new worlds of holistic health and why it's so challenging for people to take the first step. She also goes into detail about PCOS and how she has addressed it within herself and the clients she works with. This conversation was insightful on how we truly have the power to shape our world; and often it starts with the mind and learning to tap into our own intuition. A 2019 study on mental health in nursing found that one in three Canadian nurses screen positive for Major Depressive Disorder. More than one in four were positive for Generalized Anxiety Disorder and clinical burnout. Many were positive for PTSD and Panic Disorder. And too many reported having suicidal thoughts or suicide attempts.Flash forward to 2021: one year into the COVID-19 pandemic. How do you think these numbers stack up?In today's episode, we are joined by Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) Sabrina Jaffer and Registered Nurse (RN), Lina Thompson, to discuss what's happening with the mental health of nurses (spoiler: it's not good). We discuss the politics of nursing, the anxiety of the unknown, the desire to stay human in the face of unfathomable challenge and what we must do to support our frontline workers now and always.Thank you Sabrina and Lina for bringing this difficult conversation to the table with us.Please continue to rate, review, subscribe and share this podcast; we are so grateful for your support.Find the 2019 report here: Mental Disorder Symptoms Among Nurses in Canada Follow us on instagram: TCP: @theconnectionprojectbc Nutrition, bootcamps, health/fitness coaching:Catrina McCrae: @consciousfitness_Janette Mason: @_onesmallshiftFor all guest and sponsorship inquiries: theconnectionprojectbc@gmail.comThis podcast is proudly sponsored by Veeva:Instagram: @veevalifeFacebook: @veevalifeWebsite: www.veeva.ca
