Sophia Nguyen Eng is a first-generation Vietnamese-American who left a successful career in growth marketing in Silicon Valley to start a five-acre permaculture farm in the Appalachian region of eastern Tennessee. A sought-after speaker, she has presented at Google HQ, GrowthHackers, and the global SaaStalk tech conferences. Now she draws on her experiences speaking on stage and her knowledge of food, farming, and health to present at homesteading conferences. She is also a Weston A. Price Chapter Leader and the founder of the website Sprinkle with Soil. With her husband, Tim, she raises grass-fed dairy cows, beef cattle, laying hens, broilers, ducks, sheep, goats, turkeys, and grows a variety of produce for her multi-generational family and local community. Her new book is called The Nourishing Asian Kitchen: Nutrient Dense Recipes for Health and Healing. Sophia begins by talking about her journey from medical school and Silicon Valley to starting her own homestead farm with her husband. She explains the influence of her grandfather and mother on the book. In fact, the recipes are from her mother who had been cooking “nose to tail” her entire life, before it was even a thing. Over the past ten years, Sophia and her mother have been refining the recipes. She says the cookbook is much more than a cookbook - the book is her activism coming out. It's a call to action for going back to a natural way of eating and living. One of Sophia's greatest joys is to give away and share food from her farm with her community. She finds this lifestyle so deeply fulfilling: “what better gift can I give you then the gift of delicious nourishing food.” For anyone thinking about starting their own farm or even just getting a few chickens in the backyard, Sophia says simply: “start where you're at.” One by one, this is how you take back control over your health and your food. “Once you accept helplessness over others and over events, then you are empowered to take care of yourself.” ~ Dr. Margaret Paul Dr. Paul is the author/co-author of several best-selling books, including Do I Have To Give Up Me to Be Loved By You?, Inner Bonding, Healing Your Aloneness, The Inner Bonding Workbook: Six Steps to Healing Yourself and Connecting with Your Divine Guidance. Dr. Paul's books have been distributed around the world and have been translated into eleven languages. She holds a Ph.D. in psychology and is a relationship expert, noted public speaker, workshop leader, educator, chaplain, consultant and artist. She has appeared on many radio and TV shows, including the Oprah show. Dr. Paul begins by talking about the importance of self-love during the holidays. She says when you learn to love yourself and bring compassion to your own feelings and needs, then you approach others from a full place, not a needy place. For Dr. Paul, people don't realize that we live in a universe of love. We can open to that love, bring it inside and fill ourselves up. It's not only love, it's peace, joy, intelligence and laughter and so much more. However Dr. Paul reminds us that it's not about getting it externally, but rather learning to tap into that source which is here all the time. Our feelings let us know whether our loving adult or our wounded self is in charge. If you are feeling negative emotions, then you are in a wounded state and you are abandoning and rejecting yourself. If you are feeling positive feelings, then you know you are taking loving care of yourself. These feelings tell us that it's time to attend to something. She reminds us of those KEY questions to ask ourselves regularly: what's loving to me now? What's in my highest good now? So let's dive into this spectacular conversation with the always wonderful Dr. Margaret Paul! And to learn more about InnerBonding, you can visit her website right here. Mark McAfee co-founded the world's largest organic raw milk dairy in 1999 named Organic Pastures Dairy. Today, it sells it's raw products safely across the United States in over 900 store locations. The Raw Farm brand estimates to feed over 50,000 families in California, alone. Mark founded the Raw Milk Institute in 2011 to assure that farmers had a resource to assist them in producing very low risk raw milk for their consumers. He is a premed-trained retired EMS Paramedic and acute care medical educator with a background in organic farming, and he has lectured on the safety and gut biome benefits of raw milk at USC, Stanford, UCSB, Rutgers, University of Guelph, UVIC BC Canada, UCLA, CSUF, Chico State and other Universities and medical schools in Australia, USA and Canada. Mark begins by talking about his background in paramedic medicine for about 17 years. It was a great experience for the first chapter of his life, but it was exhausting work. When his grandparents passed away, Mark was ready for a change, so he took over the family farm. For Mark, raw milk is a team effort and a family affair. He says they don't just sell it, they teach it! Since the pandemic, Mark explains that raw milk sales have exploded. In fact, they are the number one milk in all natural food stores in California. As he says, “we have changed history by giving options to dollar voting consumers to be able to make a choice for their health.” There are so many immune system issues here in the US and throughout the world. However Mark explains that raw milk is a powerful food for building up the immune system. Mark says raw milk is one of the most anti-inflammatory foods on the planet. He says we are mammals, and we are defined by breast milk. Breast milk helps the baby organize the gut, nourishes the baby and protects the baby. This is the result of the plethora of bio-actives in the milk, such as enzymes, probiotic bacteria, specialized sugars, stem cells - and more are discovered every year! These same wonderful bio-actives are found in raw milk, unfortunately most of them are destroyed during pasteurization. In the end, Mark talks about the importance of living a life of purpose beyond self. He is a humanitarian with a huge heart. For Mark, it's a we project, not a me project. Let's dive in to this fascinating conversation with raw milk farmer Mark McAfee! Hilary Boynton is a mother of five who refused to accept the quality of food her children were being served during school lunch. She began a relentless mission to change the status quo, and eventually took over the lunch program at her local school in Topanga CA. She worked with local farmers and food producers to create an affordable nutrient dense meal program that was based on the foundation of ancestral ways of eating and the results were astounding. Hilary went on to start her company School of Lunch with the goal of making real food accessible to everyone. In the beginning of our conversation, Hilary talks about her health challenges during her early years when she was a high-level athlete eating a highly processed & fat free diet. Although she looked healthy on the outside, her body was breaking down. Years later, when her 4th child suffered from eczema, she came across the work of Jamie Oliver and Alice Waters. A diet of raw milk and cod liver oil healed her son after a few months. This opened her eyes to the power and potential of food as real medicine. During this time, Hilary learned about ancestral ways of eating and healing from Sally Fallon and later Dr. Natasha Campbell McBride. Ultimately, Hilary took over the lunch program at a nature based school in Topanga California that her children were attending. She overhauled the menu to focus on farm fresh, seasonal and incredibly nutrient dense foods like bone broth, fermented foods, raw dairy and much much more. This led to the creation of Hilary's company called School of Lunch. Her mission is to share this ancestral way of eating with schools, communities, families and people all over the world. Hilary explains that if you lose your health, you really have nothing. That is why she prioritizes nutrient dense food as medicine to help prevent disease in the first place. For Hilary, making a change in your diet is really a mindset shift. Once you make the decision to change, you can draw power from stepping into the work and getting started... one step and one meal at a time. If you feel inspired by Hilary's mission, you can learn more about her and the School of Lunch academy here: Join Hilary Boynton, Author of The Heal your Gut Cookbook and founder of School of Lunch, and become the change you wish to see in this world! A graduate of Northeastern University and the New England Culinary Institute, his experiences have spanned fine dining restaurants in the Northeast, to stages in Michelin Stars in Italy, to opening a restaurant in China. In 2020 he and his family moved to Europe to cook for the new Village Forest School in Piemonte, Italy. He now leads a farm to table school lunch program in Austin, Texas where he lives with his wife and kids. For anyone looking to upgrade food choices and eating habits in the home, Chef Aran Goldstein is your man! Aran begins by talking about what he's been up to this past year, creating the Farm to Table and Nose to Tail School Lunch Program in Austin, Texas. He describes it as the most rewarding work of his life. Aran says he's just trying to show up and make the highest "vibing" foods possible for the kids, staff and community at the school. When it comes to deciding what to eat & resetting our food choices, Aran says people can ask themselves this important question: what kinds of foods do I deserve? He strives to get food and nutrition right first. For Aran, the food part of his life is non-negotiable: "and so, I organize my life to accomplish this first. Everything comes after this. Everything.” Aran explains that when you know exactly what you will and won't eat and are clear about your line in the sand, it simplifies your choices. It's worth the extra effort to spend time in the kitchen preparing the most nutrient dense foods possible. Dr. Becky Plotner is a Board Certified Naturopathic Doctor through the American Naturopathic Medical Certification Board. She is a traditional naturopath, Certified GAPS Practitioner, Doctor of Pastoral Sciences, and was deemed “The GAPS Expert” by Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride in 2017. She is classified as a practitioner literate in Lyme, Iodine and chelation. She serves on Dr Natasha's GAPS Board of Directors, is on the GAPS Staff as an instructor teaching Certified GAPS Practitioners in Training, as well as Certified GAPS Coaches in training. Becky begins our conversation by talking about the healing power of natural medicine and how she has relied on it to treat her own health condition. For Becky, food is truly medicine. From meat stock and fermented foods to organ meats, these old ways of cooking are the best way of cooking. Over the last few decades, many of the foods that are the most nourishing have also been demonized. She explains that animals fats and meats are deeply nourishing. In fact, for most tribal communities, the organ meats are the most prized and given to the tribal elders and shamans. These are the foods that are the most nutrient dense. Becky says that real healing happens in the kitchen. She also says that food is love, and it's a gift that we can give to our loved ones. It's been said that the root of all illness is toxicity and deficiency. This modern world is a toxic soup and more polluted than ever before in our history. Beneficial microbes are critical for helping to facilitate detoxification. Later, Becky explains the impact of microbes and the status of the gut on mental health. Many people don't see the connection between microbes and the psyche, but these microbes can literally cause negative thoughts and emotions. For Becky, the time for action is right now. She wants people to feel empowered and to just get started - one meal at a time. Enjoy this wonderful conversation with the always inspiring Becky Plotner! Robin Graham is a results-oriented entrepreneur who helps people and organizations overcome barriers to high performance by bridging the awareness-action gap. Robin is a certified instructor and practitioner in behavioral performance. In 1997, she was one of the first Certified Instructors of PSYCH-K® in the world. She is currently Director of Training for PSYCH-K® International. Robin has trained and presented locally and internationally, to audiences ranging from small groups to large conferences. She is available for private coaching, group workshops, or speaking engagements. Robin starts by talking about her background in competitive swimming and business. She explains how she was overworked and found little joy in what she was doing. This theme of frustration kept showing up. Later, she discovered personal development with goal setting and affirmation, but she was still curious about the power of personal beliefs. She got introduced to energy psychology and Psych-K in 1994. As she says, when she heard a presentation on Psych-K, it was as if every cell in her body lit up. Initially she questioned and doubted everything about Psych-K. However, something deep inside her told her to continue with this profound healing tool. She says learning Psych-K was a pivotal point in her entire being-ness. As one of the first certified instructors in the world of Psych-K, Robin receives tremendous satisfaction from helping others bring about more peace and joy into their own lives. Robin speaks to the power of the subconscious mind, since it's 95% of our capacity while the conscious mind is only 5%. According to Bruce Lipton, 60% of the subconscious beliefs are negative and disempowering. When subconscious beliefs are in conflict with conscious wishes and desires, this often plays out as struggle and self-sabotage. She says: “look at your life and that often tells you what your beliefs are.” For Robin, real change starts from within. And Psych-K is a powerful process for installing new and improved beliefs at the subconscious levels. When it comes to feeling inspired, Robin talks about her deep connection with Nature and her love of animals. She says that by letting go of limiting beliefs, we can become inspired and in awe of our own lives. In the end, Robin offers these words of wisdom to her younger self: stop with the self-judgement, explore who you are, be true to yourself, laugh more and enjoy life. Dr. Paul begins our conversation by talking about her background and the challenges she faced growing up in her dysfunctional family. When it comes to these challenges, Dr. Paul says that we can either avoid and shut down or we can learn from them. In her mid 40's, Dr. Paul became deathly ill. Even though, she was eating a healthy diet, she realized that she wasn't taking care of herself. At this point, she let go of the caretaking & began to practice self-love through her inner bonding process. Dr. Paul walks us through the steps of Inner Bonding: Step 1: Be willing to feel pain and take responsibility for your feelings Step 2: Move into the intent to learn Step 3: Inner dialoguing with your inner child and your wounded self Step 4: Dialogue with your divine guidance Step 5: Take loving action Step 6: Evaluate your actions Dr. Paul explains that inner bonding teaches us the HOW of self love. It's a powerful process that allows us to take responsibility for our feelings and to tune into our higher guidance. Instead of putting our wounded selves in charge, we are instead led by our loving adult and higher guidance. Two powerful, truly sacred & loving questions to ask yourself regularly are: what's loving to me now? What's in my highest good now? Inner Bonding is one of the most powerful practices that I have ever come across. Obviously, results don't happen overnight. But over time with practice, you begin to develop new neural pathways in the higher brain for the loving adult. You can change your life, you can love yourself. Let's dive in! Dr. Amy Rothenberg has practiced naturopathic medicine since 1986 and is the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians, 2017 Physician of the Year. When diagnosed with cancer in 2014, Dr. Rothenberg sought care at a renowned teaching hospital and also added naturopathic doctors who specialize in integrative oncology to create her medical dream team. Her book, You Finished Treatment, Now What? A Field Guide for Cancer Survivors is a roadmap for lifestyle and natural medicine to address health challenges that persist after care, and to reduce risk of recurrence. She enjoys the good life in Western Massachusetts with longtime husband and collaborator, Dr. Paul Herscu. Amy grew up as a kid who wanted to be a doctor, however during her early years, she became disillusioned with conventional medicine and how it failed to help her parents. She talks about what ultimately drew her into the world of Naturopathic medicine. It integrated all of her natural interests in one modality. Besides being a doctor, Amy is a three time cancer survivor. She completed all of her treatments and is feeling healthy and strong; in fact, she just completed a triathlon. As both a patient and a doctor, Amy recognizes that conventional cancer care is lacking in certain important areas. This lead her to write her new book: You Finished Treatment, Now What? A Field Guide for Cancer Survivors. She describes it as a “love song” to naturopathic medicine. For years, the American Cancer Society said that one in four people would get cancer. Now, they say it's one in three and moving toward one in two! A recent study came out that 80% of cancer, diabetes and heart disease is lifestyle preventable. Amy wants people to feel empowered that they do have power, control and influence over their medical outcomes. She also wants to help people navigate what to do after they finish their treatment. Amy tells us some of the most powerful lifestyle interventions: exercise; anti-inflammatory diet; stop or minimize alcohol; stop smoking and vaping; manage stress; sleep; community and connection with other people; plus botanical medicines and nutritional supplements. Amy talks about why nature is such good medicine in her life. She loves spending time in the garden picking flowers and giving away flower bouquets. She finds it incredibly peaceful and healing. In the end, Amy shares advice from her current self to her younger self and gives the prescription for living a beautiful life! Don Jose Ruiz is a Toltec Master of Transformation and modern-day Shaman. He is a direct descendant of the Toltecs of the Eagle Night lineage and is the son of don Miguel Ruiz. He is the author of The Fifth Agreement, Ripples of Wisdom, and My Good Friend the Rattlesnake. Along with his family, he teaches workshops and offers transformational journeys around the world. Jose starts by talking about the underworld as a metaphor for personal growth. He says that when we face our demons, we are facing our fears and how we use the word against ourselves. When we experience emotional pain, we enter the underworld. But when we find our medicine and learn to heal our heartbreak, we grow in spirit, wisdom, and maturity. In this way, we start to believe in ourselves, and we bring our light into the world. The most important thing Jose took away from the underworld is faith in himself. He discovered his greatest ally – and that ally is himself. And the key to this is gratitude for life. Jose says that in the darkness, seeds are being planted. In this way, we must live our light and live our peace. It's easy to blame others. However when we play the blame game, we suppress ourselves and give up our power. But, there comes a time when we find our divinity. Jose says that true spirituality is when we support the love of our life that is ourselves. Jose also reminds us that inspiration creates the artist. And when we share our wisdom, it creates ripples that travel endlessly and eternally throughout the universe. Jose shares how he practices gratitude. He says sometimes when his body feels anxious or fearful, he stops replaying the patterns from the past and instead returns to the gratitude for being alive. And he says gratitude leads us to self-forgiveness. Simply put, Jose says, “I'm not a guru, I'm not a teacher, I'm just someone who is grateful to be alive.” In the end, Jose and I have a little surprise - we join our voices together and sing "LET IT BE" by the Beatles. if you want to learn more about Jose, his books as well as his upcoming series of live events, you can find him here: https://www.miguelruiz.com/don-jose-ruiz Today's episode's sponsor is Microbiome Labs. Neema Avashia was born and raised in southern West Virginia to parents who immigrated to the United States. She has been a civics and history teacher in the Boston Public Schools since 2003. Her first book, "Another Appalachia: Coming Up Queer and Indian in a Mountain Place," was recently published this past March 2022. Neema begins by talking about how how her book Another Appalachia came together. Initially, her book was a collection of essays mapping her experience growing up in Appalachia to her Indian immigrant parents. One important theme in the book is nostalgia. She describes it as “a sense of missingness, of lost lovers or homes. The love that remains, even after objects of that love are gone.” Although she certainly doesn't sugarcoat the racism and discrimination she experienced, for her, the hard parts were outweighed by the good. So much has changed about her hometown on Pamela Circle in West Virginia. When she was growing up, her hometown was healthy and people had work and there was civic engagement, However, today she says there is a level of pain that has left the people in really rough shape. Another powerful part of the book focuses on the role of community. Her understanding of community was shaped by the intersection of the Appalachian and Indian communities. She says both communities understand love in a very similar way. She writes: “We don't say ‘I love you' in my community. We cook for you. We host you in our houses. We accept your loved ones as our own.” Although her experience of community is different in Boston than in West Virginia, she says there are certain people in Boston that feel like home. She says the pace of life here in Boston is a lot faster and people don't slow down easily. It's very different than her life growing up on Pamela Circle. She says she feels like she's chasing that "feeling" from growing up on Pamela circle. Neema speaks about the tension that she faces in her writing life. It raises some questions: how do you write non-fiction in a way that doesn't make everyone mad? And what is the price of not expressing oneself and staying silent? Who does that silence serve? One of her writing professors encouraged her to “write with a clearer heart.” Neema tells the story of playing Pandemic Santa with her partner Laura at the beginning of the pandemic. They would cook lots of food, randomly drop it off and offer joy to others. This is one way to make the world feel smaller and find your power. In the end, Neema explains that her book has been medicine for many young people in Appalachia and elsewhere who might otherwise feel alone and disconnected. It's a beautiful gift she can give her readers. Dr. Chris Chlebowski is a naturopath, chiropractor, clinical herbalist, and homeopath with a medical practice, Ashland Natural Medicine in southern Oregon. At the clinic, Dr. Chlebowski and his staff use cutting-edge technology blended with traditional therapies, with a particular specialty in the treatment of chronic Lyme disease, mold illness, cancer, neurological disorders, and – most commonly – “mystery” diseases that other doctors have been unable to diagnose. When he isn't working up a difficult case, staring into his microscope, or spending time with his wife and their two children, you can find Dr. Chlebowski climbing up the rocks or skiing down the mountains of Southern Oregon and northern California. In addition, he has written a fascinating, new book called The Virus and the Host available right here at Chelsea Green Publishing. Chris starts by talking about his background in various healing modalities, from Chiropractic to Homeopathy and Naturopathy. Given the complexity and prevalence of the illness on the planet today, he realized he needed more tools in his healing toolbox. As he says, "people on the planet are getting sicker and sicker, and the old things aren't necessarily working any more." Chris says that he's always been interested in pandemics. Back in December 2019, Chris reflects on how he started to read reports about this new virus in China and he felt terrified. He felt it in his bones that this was the big one. He began to do lots of research and make preparations even before it was widely reported in the media. At the onset of the pandemic in the US, he started treating patients and he began to realize what was working effectively. He followed three key principles: make sure bowels and kidneys are moving; avoid suppressing the fever; and bring down inflammation. Chris explains that people are exposed to more toxicity than ever before: “Fundamentally we have more toxicity in our body than we have ever had in the history of the planet.” This toxicity creates inflammation, suppresses the immune system function, makes us more susceptible to virus infections and directly leads to cardiovascular disease and cancer. For Chris, the reason he wrote the book is because he's afraid that we won't learn the lessons from the pandemic: “I wanted people to have a tool in their hand that if they read my book, they could be more prepared and less scared the next time." Chris also says that it's not a matter of if the next pandemic shows up, but rather when. The 2nd half of the book is a guide book to get healthy and survive anything that's coming along. Chris explains some keys for rebooting our health: Eat good clean organic food; Move the body; Drink clean water; Be fulfilled spiritually, emotionally and in our work; Create balance within our microbial inner world. As an herbalist, if Chris had to choose one herb that stands out above the rest, he chooses Dandelion. He says that dandelion is the archetypal most important plant because it's perceived as a weed and grows everywhere, yet it's a gentle and powerful detoxifier for the blood, liver and lymph. David begins by talking about his spiritual journey. He says that he was always deeply introspective and interested in the "alternative" of everything. David talks openly about his path that led to alcohol and drug addiction. After relapsing several times, he talks about having this transformative “emotional vision” on a bed at a sober house. Something clicked and a light in his head turned on and he's never used drugs since. This is the power of visualization. For David, when you use visualization, you are creating new neural pathways in the brain. To this day, David utilizes a healing toolbox of practices that have truly transformed his life. These tools include sound, breath, visualization and moving the body. It's a slow process but if practiced over time, they can produce big changes. At the beginning of the pandemic, David talks about the stress of losing his job. It was overwhelming and he wasn't sure what to do with himself. However, as one door closed, another opened. He dove deeper into his spiritual practices. During this time, David discovered the audio healing technology called Hemi-Sync. It works by integrating the two hemispheres of the brain. He says this was the catalyst for his growth and visionary experiences. He then dove even deeper into other healing modalities such as Biofield Tuning. David says that when we feel stuck, it's often a sign that the inner landscape is not in alignment with what we want the outer landscape to look like. However, when we let go of old paths and embrace our true path, we open a space for synchronicities and opportunities to come into our life. Language of Light Wellness offers a path forward from a spiritual perspective for anyone feeling stuck. David says he's on a journey of exploration – and the language of light allows him to explore in a way that serves the world. “It's beautiful what happens when you align yourself with what you really love.” You can learn more about David and his work right here: https://www.thelanguageoflight.org/ And you can connect with David here: info@thelanguageoflight.org APPLE PODCASTS SPOTIFY STITCHER
