The intention we choose in any given moment shapes everything that follows. In this episode, Dr. Margaret Paul explores how becoming aware of our intentions can transform the way we relate to ourselves, others, and the choices we make every day. She unpacks the two core intentions in Inner Bonding: the intention to control and the intention to love. These intentions either strengthen the relationship between our loving adult, inner child, and spiritual guidance, or keep us operating from our wounded ego-self. Dr. Paul also reminds us that lasting healing cannot happen when the wounded self is in charge, because control and love lead us in very different directions. Have you ever tried to explain yourself in a conflict — and the more you explained, the worse it got?   In this insightful and deeply practical episode, Dr. Margaret Paul explores one of the most frustrating patterns in relationships: why explaining, defending, and justifying yourself rarely leads to understanding. She explains that when someone is operating from their wounded self, they are not in their logical upper brain. They are not available to hear you. And no amount of explaining will change that.   Dr. Paul walks through what is actually happening beneath the surface of relational conflict, what the other person is really asking for when they come at you with anger or blame, and how to shift from the urge to explain and control into the loving adult who can respond with presence, curiosity, and care. She shares practical examples of what this looks like in real moments including how to comment on intent rather than content, how to actively listen, and how to take a sacred pause when your wounded self is ready to defend.   Come explore a more loving and effective way of navigating conflict in the Inner Bonding podcast.    Enjoy the podcast? Have you ever found yourself asking: why can't I get it together? Why am I struggling so much when others seem fine? In this grounding and compassionate episode, Dr. Margaret Paul offers a profound reframe for anyone who has ever felt like a mess. What you are likely experiencing is not a personal failure, but a nervous system dysregulation. And understanding what that means, where it comes from, and how to respond to it with love rather than judgment can begin to change everything. Dr. Paul explains how the nervous system constantly scans for safety or danger, how childhood environments shape the survival patterns we still carry into adulthood, and why self-judgment only deepens dysregulation rather than resolving it. She also shares practical tools for nervous system regulation, including vagal breathing, EFT, EMDR, and somatic experiencing, and offers a gentle guided moment to help you connect with your inner child right now. What if the most important form of self-care has nothing to do with bubble baths or vacations? In this episode, Dr. Margaret Paul explores one of the most overlooked dimensions of true self-care: learning to validate yourself. While external self-care has its place, she explains that no amount of outside validation from a partner, a parent, a boss, or social media can heal the wound of self-invalidation. That healing only happens from the inside. Dr. Paul walks through why so many people grow up dependent on others to reflect their worth, what self-validation actually means (and what it does not), and how learning to see, hear, and honor your own inner experience transforms not just your relationship with yourself but with everyone around you. She shares practical ways to begin practicing self-validation, including how to name your feelings with compassion, mirror your soul's qualities back to yourself, and stop outsourcing your emotional authority to others. Are you doing inner child work but still feeling stuck, anxious, or emotionally overwhelmed? In this eye-opening episode, Dr. Margaret Paul addresses one of the most important and most misunderstood topics in the healing space: what inner child work actually is, and the common mistakes that can inadvertently reinforce the very wounds you are trying to heal. Dr. Paul begins by drawing a crucial distinction between the soulful inner child and the wounded self that developed in response to fear and false beliefs, and walks through the key mistakes she sees again and again: giving the wounded child too much power, confusing love with indulgence, using inner child work to avoid adult responsibility, staying focused on pain without bringing in love and guidance, trying to fix the inner child rather than develop the loving adult, and attempting this work without a connection to something greater than the ego. How do you tell the difference between a true spiritual teacher and someone who is subtly using you? In this timely and thought-provoking episode, Dr. Margaret Paul tackles a topic that is as widespread as it is rarely addressed: spiritual deception. Not the obvious, overt kind — but the subtle kind, where false prophets speak kindly, share genuine insight, and still manage to keep you dependent, doubtful, and disconnected from your own inner authority. Dr. Paul explains that a false prophet is not defined by what they say, but by their intent. She walks through the key red flags to watch for, the qualities that distinguish true spiritual teachers from those seeking power, and why the most important protection is a strong connection to your own inner and higher knowing.  Come explore how to develop discernment, strengthen your loving adult, and learn to trust truth over charm in Discerning False Prophets here on the Inner Bonding podcast.   Enjoy the podcast? What does it actually mean to take emotional responsibility — and why do so many of us get it wrong? In this illuminating episode, Dr. Margaret Paul cuts through the confusion around one of the most misunderstood concepts in personal growth. She explains why emotional responsibility is not self-blame and certainly not a burden. True emotional responsibility is an act of love — toward yourself and toward the inner child who carries your deepest feelings and needs your compassionate presence. Dr. Paul explores how the wounded self distorts emotional responsibility into shame, how fear keeps us from showing up for our own feelings, and what it looks like to become the loving, compassionate adult your inner child has always needed. She also draws a powerful distinction between self-blame, which comes from fear, and true responsibility, which comes from love — and shows how that shift alone can begin to transform your inner world. What if the richest life begins when you finally listen to your feelings? We sit down with Dr. Margaret Paul—best-selling author and co-creator of Inner Bonding—to rethink wealth as well-being and put love at the center of a life that feels good. Forget the myth that a bigger balance sheet guarantees joy. Dr. Paul has coached people with yachts, acclaim, and approval who still felt empty. Her insight is simple: happiness flows from how you treat yourself, especially under stress and in close relationships. We unpack the health, wealth, wisdom, and happiness framework and explore why control patterns—anger, blame, withdrawal, caretaking—quietly drain connection. Dr. Paul outlines the six steps of Inner Bonding: feel your feelings, choose learning over control, get curious about pain, open to guidance, take loving action, and check your feelings for feedback. It's a practical way to build a trustworthy “loving adult” who sets boundaries, speaks up, and rests without guilt. We also clarify the “inner child”—your soul, wise and speaking through feelings, alongside wounded parts formed over time. When you take responsibility for that inner world, stress eases, health improves, and creativity returns. Personal power shifts from “power over” to alignment between guidance, compassion, and action—changing relationships, careers, and how money supports life.If you're ready to trade approval-chasing for real peace, this conversation offers clear steps and hope. Subscribe for more conversations that simplify money, elevate well-being, and help you live fully. In this episode, Dr. Margaret Paul clarifies why this common assumption is not only inaccurate but often harmful to true healing. She explains how Inner Bonding defines the inner child as the soul self—our true essence of love, compassion, creativity, and joy. She contrasts this with the wounded child, or ego-wounded self, which is formed through false beliefs and fears absorbed during childhood and throughout life. “Once you accept helplessness over others and over events, then you are empowered to take care of yourself.” ~ Dr. Margaret Paul Dr. Paul is the author/co-author of several best-selling books, including Do I Have To Give Up Me to Be Loved By You?, Inner Bonding, Healing Your Aloneness, The Inner Bonding Workbook: Six Steps to Healing Yourself and Connecting with Your Divine Guidance. Dr. Paul's books have been distributed around the world and have been translated into eleven languages. She holds a Ph.D. in psychology and is a relationship expert, noted public speaker, workshop leader, educator, chaplain, consultant and artist. She has appeared on many radio and TV shows, including the Oprah show. Dr. Paul begins by talking about the importance of self-love during the holidays.  She says when you learn to love yourself and bring compassion to your own feelings and needs, then you approach others from a full place, not a needy place. For Dr. Paul, people don't realize that we live in a universe of love.  We can open to that love, bring it inside and fill ourselves up.  It's not only love, it's peace, joy, intelligence and laughter and so much more. However Dr. Paul reminds us that it's not about getting it externally, but rather learning to tap into that source which is here all the time. Our feelings let us know whether our loving adult or our wounded self is in charge.  If you are feeling negative emotions, then you are in a wounded state and you are abandoning and rejecting yourself.  If you are feeling positive feelings, then you know you are taking loving care of yourself. These feelings tell us that it's time to attend to something. She reminds us of those KEY questions to ask ourselves regularly: what's loving to me now?  What's in my highest good now?   So let's dive into this spectacular conversation with the always wonderful Dr. Margaret Paul! With a Ph.D. in psychology and more than 50 years experience as a therapist (including my own), she's a relationship expert and co-creator of Inner Bonding, a self-healing process that moves people from self-abandonment to self-love.   Margaret has used the pain of her tumultuous upbringing and challenging life path to heal herself, physically and emotionally, and help other people access their inner spiritual guidance for healing.   She shows us how on the other side of any trauma, conditioning, or fear-based mindset, we can connect with ourselves and learn to live based on our Higher guidance. Meet Dr. Margaret Paul   Dr. Margaret Paul is a bestselling author of 12 published books, relationship expert, and co-creator of the powerful Inner Bonding® self-healing process. She has appeared on numerous radio and television shows, including Oprah. Margaret is a member of the Transformational Leadership Council. Dr. Paul has been recognized as a luminary and leader in the field of psychology and personal growth by Jack Canfield, Alanis Morissette, Neale Donald Walsch, and John Gray, to name a few.    First off, I firmly believe that there is a crisis of self-abandonment and a lack of self-love and self-kindness. We dove deep into how to change this disturbing habit and belief system that can wreak havoc on your immune system and body. I know from my own experience that my own past health issues with my thyroid and immune system had everything to do with not knowing how to honor my feelings or take care of myself. I have no doubt that so many illnesses and physical ailments are due to a lack of self-care, self-love, self-kindness, and ultimately self-abandonment. You will learn in this conversation the powerful process of Inner Bonding, one that Dr. Margaret has used with thousands of patients (including herself), and how to use this healing process with yourself. I highly recommend you get her book, The Inner Bonding Workbook, and make your own Inner Bonding work a real priority. If you need any proof, watch Dr. Margaret on my YouTube channel (https://youtube.com/juliereisler) and you will see the pure joy and love emanating out of her and how kind the years have been through this work (seriously, you won't believe that she is 83).     What Does Self-Abandonment Really Mean Self-abandonment is when you are taking care of everyone else but yourself. Most of us are trained to abandon ourselves because our culture, family of origin, religion, or surroundings teach us that it is selfish to care for ourselves first. You can't do this without experiencing physical symptoms. Self-care is actually the opposite of selfishness because it's about taking responsibility for yourself and your well-being. You then take yourself out of the victim mode. Blaming others for your well-being and issues is actually selfish. Taking care of yourself relieves the burden of others taking care of you. Get the difference? This is a powerful distinction. The Inner Bonding process is all about moving out of our head focus into a body focus so we can learn to truly love ourselves, and receive guidance from our Higher Self for the rest of our life.     The 6-Step Process to Inner Bonding:   Be willing to be present with your feelings, including those of loneliness, pain, sadness, and despair. You'll go back to being present and take responsibility for your feelings so that you can get out of your head and into your body and heart. Breathe into your heart and be open to learning about how to love yourself. In this step, you will start to gain access to your higher self, when your frequency is high enough. Keep your body clean with healthy, nourishing, clean organic foods. Keep your thoughts clear and clean as well. Eating well is loving to your body and your whole self. Because Spirit exists at such a high frequency, the more you are in alignment with this energy level, the more you can get 'at will divine guidance'. Imagine a wiser part of yourself (500 years older) full of power, truth, and wisdom, and invite that higher self part of you in. This is the 'loving adult' that lives within each of us. In doing this you'll develop new neural pathways in the brain.  Breathe back into your feelings. For example, if you felt numb and depressed, go back into those feelings and imagine these feelings as your inner child. Ask this part of you: 'How am I treating you? What am I telling you?' We caused our own self-abandonment, so this step is crucial for taking responsibility and discovering how we're abandoning ourselves. This is connecting to our younger self, our 'wounded ego self', which is also Character 2 for those who have read Whole Brain Living by Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor, or heard either of our two interviews. To listen to either interview, go to: https://youtu.be/gox_ZIwZdpk  or https://youtu.be/_LisJ6vFwEk. There's always a belief, usually about fear, to better understand and discover. Dialogue with your higher guidance about your false beliefs. Ask this part of yourself: 'What is loving to me? What is in my highest good right now?' Take loving action (the more you do this, the more you're programming yourself to be kind and loving to yourself in thought and action) Go back to how you are feeling --- if it's a loving action, you'll feel relief and you won't feel shame or fear.   Inner Bonding is about knowing you are never alone and that you can access your Higher Guidance at any time. Your guidance is ALWAYS there, my friend. My favorite quote from our conversation (which brought tears to my eyes) was this: "We're on the planet to evolve our ability to love". I agree with Dr. Margaret, this is the purpose of connecting to your You-est You.
