Tormod Heier er professor i militær strategi og operasjoner, forskningsleder ved Stabsskolen, professor-II ved Høgskolen i Innlandet, og dosent ved Försvarshögskolan i Stockholm. Heier har bak seg 32 år som offiser i Forsvaret, herunder 15 år som oberstløytnant i Hæren. Som offiser jobbet han blant annet i Hærens Brigade Nord på Skjold og Setermoen, i Etterretningstjenesten på Lutvann, i Forsvarsdepartementet i Oslo og i Mazar-e-Sharif, Nord-Afghanistan. Heier har én doktorgrad og to mastergrader i henholdsvis Statsvitenskap og War Studies fra Universitetet i Oslo og King's College, London. Han har utgitt en rekke bøker, blant annet om norsk og europeisk forsvars- og sikkerhetspolitikk, men også om samfunnsvitenskapelig metode og strategisk kompetanseledelse.I 2017 ble han tildelt Ossietzky-prisen, og i mars 2023 mottok han Hærens Fortjenestmedalje.I dagens episode snakker vi om Ukraina, Russland, møtet og pressekonferansen mellom Zelenskyj, Trump og Vance, og evt. fredsavtale med Putin.

En la mañana del domingo 15 de enero de 1956, un pescador descubrió en la arena de la playa de Nares, en Mazarrón, los cuerpos sin vida de dos personas. Uno era el de una mujer y el otro el de un varón. Los cadáveres yacían cerca de la orilla del mar, sin rastros de sangre. No portaban documentación alguna que permitiera conocer la identidad de los fallecidos. Todas las etiquetas de la ropa de la mujer estaban cortadas, incluida la del abrigo de pieles y habían raspado la marca que estaba en la funda de las gafas del varón, como si no quisieran que nadie pudiera identificarlos. Además, junto a los cuerpos había un maletín y una maleta grande. Muy cerca, de estos enseres, un segundo abrigo de mujer; y, por último, depositadas sobre una roca aledaña, tres copas perfectamente alineadas, dos de ellas con restos de una sustancia amarillenta, la tercera estaba limpia, nunca había tenido alcohol ni ninguna otra sustancia, y contigua a estas, una botella de champán. Alan's Bio: Chief Warrant Officer Five Alan Mack, a native of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, served over 35 years in the US Army before retiring in 2016. His military career included 17 years in Army Special Operations. His awards include the Legion of Merit, 2 Distinguished Flying Crosses, 3 Bronze Stars, 10 Air Medals (one with Valor Device), and a Combat Action Badge. Additionally, he logged more than 6700 flying hours during his tenure. During Operations Desert Shield and Storm, Mack participated as a CH-47D “Chinook” pilot. Then he flew MH-47s while assigned to the 160 th SOAR, the Army's only Special Operations Aviation Regiment. His crew was one of the first into Afghanistan and the first into Mazar-i-Sharif as part of America's Response to the attacks on 9/11. His cargo, a 5th Special Forces “A-Team” (ODA 595), aka ‘the Horse Soldiers,' helped topple the Taliban, capture the country's capital, and reclaim possession of the US Embassy. El discurso de Guido Gómez Mazará cuando lanzó ayer sus aspiraciones presidenciales lo sitúa como un populista de derechas que se autodesigna representante de las bases y de los excluidos de su propio partido. A pesar de la edad de Guido ese discurso es propio de hace 30 años cuando el entonces Partido Revolucionario Dominicano se destruía a si mismo en cada proceso electoral gracias a las ambiciones de los caciques locales que aspiraban a una diputación para obtener una regiduría. Cada uno contaba con un pequeño grupo de adeptos dispuestos a intentar un “capú y no te abajes” y con ese ruido se lograba una negociación. Varias veces he puesto el caso de Fello Suberví como paradigma de ese tigueraje que obligaba al líder Peña Gómez a buscarle una vuelta al problema. Por ese tigueraje Peña Gómez murió haciendo campaña. El PRM es el único partido que hará una primaria interna para escoger su candidato presidencial y pocos dudan de quién será el ganador. La solidez del posicionamiento de Abinader no impide la participación de otros candidatos o candidatas que podrían ser opción en otro momento y que usarían este proceso para proyección. El problema de todas y todos los que aspiran a una posición en este momento es que las famosas bases que solo son reclamadas en estos momentos tendrán muy poca incidencia en la escogencia de los candidatos y o lo harán en las demarcaciones menos importantes. ¿Por qué razón usted cree que Alfredo Pacheco se inscribió ayer para repetir como candidato después de invertir millones en las vallas que aparecen en todo el Distrito Nacional no solo en su circunscripción? ¿Por qué el senador de La Romana se mudó para el PRD donde seguro repetirá como candidato a la misma posición pero en un partido chiquito? Las reservas de los Partidos no solo le permitirán a la dirigencia negociar con otras fuerzas sino adecuar sus boletas a los perfiles mayoritarios de los votantes de cada demarcación. Para eso sirven las encuestas en las que no se consultan a las bases interesadas sino al universo de votantes. La práctica política electoral ha cambiado y muchos de los actores siguen empantanados en los que le dio resultados en otra época. Ese tema es más evidente en el PRM pero le pasa a todos los partidos en distinta medida. Por eso Iván Lorenzo anuncia que no irá como senador de Elías Piña y el faranduleo partidario se ha achicado. Lentamente la población dominicana está aprendiendo a votar. Este proceso advierte una cualificación de elector que por ahora es en algunas demarcaciones pero que inevitablemente se extenderá en el espacio y en el tiempo.

In this episode of The Burn Bag Podcast, A'ndre talks with former CIA Paramilitary officer and Alpha Team Leader J.R. Seeger on the CIA's 2001 insertion into Afghanistan in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks and the early days of the Afghanistan War. Seeger, who's had a 27 year career in federal service, led Alpha Team, one of the first CIA paramilitary teams to be dropped behind enemy lines in Afghanistan, and provides us with an oral history of the pre-war intelligence operations and CIA's efforts to consolidate the Afghan Resistance's efforts against the Taliban. Seeger, who can't necessarily discuss some of the specifics of his role on the ground in Afghanistan, nevertheless guides us through the history of the operations, including a discussion on the uprising at Qala-i-Jangi compound near Mazar-i-Sharif that resulted in the death of his team mate Mike Spann -- America's first casualty in the twenty year Afghanistan War. Since retiring from federal service, J.R. Seeger has written a litany of thriller novels, which include the MIKE4 series, which focuses on a family of special operations officers spanning between World War II and the present day.J.R.'s story and that of Team Alpha is also covered in Toby Harnden's book First Casualty. The booster shots will be released months before trials on humans are completed, according to a new report. New COVID-19 booster shots that target the latest Omicron variant will be approved by the FDA this week, the Wall Street Journal reported. The new booster shot will be "bivalent" – which means it can target the original COVID-19 strain and the Omicron BA.5 subvariant. The booster shot will likely be available to Americans despite not having been tested on humans. Instead, the FDA will rely on testing on mice, data from current COVID-19 vaccines, and earlier iterations of boosters. The Wall Street Journal noted, "The Food and Drug Administration is expected to authorize new COVID-19 booster shots this week without a staple of its normal decision-making process: data from a study showing whether the shots were safe and worked in humans." FDA Commissioner Robert Califf issued a statement on Twitter regarding how the government agency will likely make a decision in granting emergency use authorization (EUA) for booster shots from Moderna and Pfizer. "FDA will rely on the totality of the available evidence in making a decision, including: Clinical trial data from other bivalent mRNA COVID-19 boosters RWE from current COVID-19 vaccines administered to millions of people, non-clinical data for the bivalent BA.4/5 vaccines, bivalent and multivalent vaccines are very common and modifying a vaccine to include different virus strains often does not require a change in other ingredients," Califf said on Twitter. Virginia's former governor, Democrat Ralph Northam, signed legislation in 2021 tying the state's emissions policies to the California Air Resources Board. The board has imposed a regimen to eliminate the sale of gas and diesel vehicles by 2035, forcing Virginia to do the same thanks to the 2021 law. "In an effort to turn Virginia into California, liberal politicians who previously ran our government sold Virginia out by subjecting Virginia drivers to California vehicle laws," Youngkin wrote in a statement on Twitter. The raids took place on the morning of August 25 in Mazar-e-Sharif, which is the capital of Afghanistan’s Balkh province, Khaama Press reported citing unnamed sources. The news agency said Taliban spokesman Asif Waziri, who serves Balkh’s “office of the chief of police” confirmed the raids in the northern capital. “Taliban forces are conducting door-to-door searches in an effort to combat ISIS, obtain state weapons and collect undocumented guns, as well as track down suspected criminals,” the Taliban spokesman added. Waziri referenced the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), which is an international jihadist terror group present in Afghanistan in the form of an offshoot called ISIS-Khorasan Province (ISIS-K). ISIS-K claimed responsibility for a deadly suicide bombing at Kabul’s Hamid Karzai International Airport on August 26, 2021, that killed 13 U.S. servicemembers and hundreds of Afghans. The attack took place as the administration of U.S. President Joe Biden oversaw a chaotic withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan after the Taliban seized control of Kabul, the nation’s seat of government, on August 15, 2021. The Taliban had previously ruled Kabul from 1996 to 2001 before Washington launched a nearly 20-year-long War in Afghanistan in late 2001 that ousted the Sunni Islam-based terror group from the capital and replaced it with a U.S.-backed Afghan government administration. In a reversal of the action almost two decades later, the Taliban reconquered Kabul last summer and have since reestablished sharia, or Islamic law, as the basis of Afghanistan’s legal system. New COVID-19 booster shots that target the latest Omicron variant will be approved by the FDA this week, the Wall Street Journal reported. The new booster shot will be "bivalent" – which means it can target the original COVID-19 strain and the Omicron BA.5 subvariant. The booster shot will likely be available to Americans despite not having been tested on humans. Instead, the FDA will rely on testing on mice, data from current COVID-19 vaccines, and earlier iterations of boosters. The Wall Street Journal noted, "The Food and Drug Administration is expected to authorize new COVID-19 booster shots this week without a staple of its normal decision-making process: data from a study showing whether the shots were safe and worked in humans." FDA Commissioner Robert Califf issued a statement on Twitter regarding how the government agency will likely make a decision in granting emergency use authorization (EUA) for booster shots from Moderna and Pfizer.
