Playing is such an innate part of growing up that brings so many more benefits than we realise, so what stops us playing as adults? I hadn't even thought of what play meant to me until I started searching for a way of moving that I knew I could keep doing after injury for life. Speaking to Darryl Edwards, founder of the Primal Play Method, I wanted to find out how he found play again and particularly why he feels it's such an important missing part of our movement lives. I really enjoyed this free flowing discussion about a topic that many may not have even thought of or certainly thought about in relation to the way they move. We explore the definition, the societal pressure for adults to play less. The importance of recognizing and appreciating play in everyday activities, as well as the myriad benefits for our health. We discussed Darryl's personal journey from a sedentary lifestyle to embracing movement and play before moving on to thinking about the balance between technological advancement and physical movement and its evolutionary impact. We look at the importance of finding joy and playfulness in movement, the concept of gamification and creating a sense of excitement and engagement in physical activity, and as is regularly encouraged about making small changes to incorporate more physical activity into their lives. In today's world, the sad reality is that we've become far more sedentary than previous generations, with most of our lives forced into desk jobs or innovations that encourage us to prioritize convenience over movement. Darryl stresses that movement is not merely a form of exercise but a fundamental aspect of our health—a powerful medicine that can slash the risk of disease by up to 50%. We discuss the need for restructuring of daily routines to incorporate more active habits and natural movement throughout the day instead of relying entirely on 1-hour workout sessions. As a play researcher, Darryl believes that embracing our inner child is the key to fostering a more positive and playful attitude towards active movement. According to some estimates, only 5% of people in the West get the recommended amount of daily physical activity. Is the solution getting a fitness tracker, developing more discipline, or buying a piece of cardio equipment for your basement? My guest would say none of the above, and would have you think about kids playing at recess instead.Darryl Edwards is the founder of the Primal Play Method. Today on the show, we discuss the epidemic of sedentariness which besets both adults and children and why technology and willpower isn't the cure for it. Darryl then explains why a better solution to getting more movement and physical activity in our lives is rediscovering the intrinsically motivating pleasure of play. He offers suggestions on how to do that, including compiling a play history for your life, embracing “primal movements” that will get you moving like an animal and a child, and getting over the fear of looking goofy while doing so. We discuss the joys and health benefits of exploring your capabilities and environment and how to incorporate more movement into your busy adult life by making even regular activities more playful.Resources Related to the PodcastDarryl's books:Animal Moves: How to Move Like an Animal to Get You Leaner, Fitter, Stronger and Healthier for LifeMy First Animal Moves: A Children's Book to Encourage Kids and Their Parents to Move More, Sit Less and Decrease Screen TimeAoM Article: Get Fit Like a Wild Man — A Primer on MovNatAoM Article: The 10 Physical Skills Every Man Should MasterAoM Article: The Importance of Having a Physical IdentityAoM Article: 30 Days to a Better Man Day 24 — Play!AoM Podcast #508: Break Out of Your Cage and Stop Being a Human Zoo AnimalAoM Podcast #245: The Workout the World ForgotAoM Podcast #749: Let the Children Play!Connect With Darryl EdwardsPrimal Play websiteDarryl on FBDarryl on IG

Movement is medicine, and play is the secret ingredient that makes it enjoyable and sustainable. This is the message of Darryl Edwards, a movement coach and founder of the Primal Play Method. In this episode, Darryl shares his personal journey of overcoming burnout and transforming his health through exercise. He discovered that traditional exercise programs didn't resonate with him and his clients, so he developed the Primal Play Method, which combines the science of evolutionary biology with exercise physiology and play psychology. The Primal Play Method focuses on three pillars: primal movement patterns, exercise science, and playfulness. Darryl believes that movement should be enjoyable and engaging, just as it was when we were children. By incorporating elements of play into our exercise routines, we can tap into our inner child and rediscover the joy of movement. Darryl's approach is inclusive and diverse, with exercises suitable for all ages, abilities, and fitness levels, certainly including those who are managing or overcoming injury. He emphasizes the importance of finding activities that you truly enjoy, rather than forcing yourself to do something that feels like a chore. Through his work, Darryl aims to inspire individuals to transform their health and well-being by making physical activity fun and engaging. He believes that by embracing our natural human instincts for play, we can optimize our health and vitality. This is your permission slip to break free from the monotony of traditional exercise and infuse your fitness routine with joy and playfulness. Get ready to color outside the lines and discover the transformative power of primal play. Quotes: • "Movement is medicine. It isn't just about getting into shape. It's also about improving my health." (08:51 | Darrell Edwards) • "I went back to my childhood. It was when I was playing out all day, long summer days where literally food was just something you stuff down your face because you want to get back outside again. And it was only when the sun went down and your parents said you had to get back in that you went in. And those days were just absolutely incredible. So that was a sort of like I am living for the moment and all that matters is play." (18:09 | Darrell Edwards) • "I don't just want to do one thing. I want to do a variety of things, one, because it increases enjoyment and longevity of performing that task, sustainability of having different things, variety being the spice of life. Right. So it does that. It also ensures that my body isn't overly stressed in one particular domain because I'm working at different intensities, using sometimes strength, sometimes cardio, sometimes balance, flexibility, all these all these different facets." (32:06 | Darrell Edwards) • "My job is to help individuals embrace their inner child, accept that it's okay to have a longing for that, but learn how to recreate that now." (36:20 | Darrell Edwards) • "As an adult, I don't want to be doing all the things that I did as a kid. I want to be cognizant of my adult capabilities, my adult abilities, but I want to maintain that mindset of that child." Do you remember the last time you really had fun working out? I don't mean the feeling of satisfaction. I'm talking about having so much fun that you don't notice the time pass. For me, I know it when I've been mountain biking through the mud. It reminds me of when I was little and I used to come home absolutely caked in filth. My mum would roll her eyes and then I was sent upstairs to have a bath. As adults, it feels like we have lost the art of playing. The Fat-Burning Man Show by Abel James: The Future of Health & Performance
Even before the world shut down, 80% of kids don't get enough exercise. What do you think these numbers look like for grown-ups? Terrifying. Somehow we find ourselves in a world where we need to fight for our right to recess. Even if we're adults. No matter what country we're in. I can't think of a better person to remind us how important it is to go outside and play than our friend Darryl Edwards. Darryl is a former investment banking technologist turned movement coach, author, researcher, and creator of the Primal Play method. He's also a talented musician, as well. Being a creator, some sort of artist, whether that be visual art, theater, performance of any kind, but certainly music and play. These are all very related to each other, and building one of these modalities can help build the others, I believe. On today's show with Darryl, we're talking about: How the phrase "I play" can transform you. Making functional fitness fun again How to take the superhero path What NOT to do in an emergency situation How not to get completely steamrolled by life—that's important right now. And tons more... In episode 057 of A Medicinal Mind: Wisdom and Wellbeing I have a deeply authentic and powerful conversation with one of the leaders of the ancestral health movement, the creative mind behind Primal Play: Darryl Edwards. Darryl has been featured on numerous podcasts, sharing his beautiful spirit and desire to change your relationship with exercise, interjecting movement and play into every aspect of our lives. Today, however, seeking to delve more into Darryl's life story, we explore aspects of Darryl's journey, starting in early childhood through his initial career pursuits culminating in a radical shift towards cultivating wellness in everything he pursues. Hearing first about Darryl's childhood and his original desire to enter medicine as a doctor, we then get a glimpse of the reframing and birthing of a new inner desire to explore computing and a relationship with technological intelligence. Moving from here, Darryl continues exploring his early life and adulthood, sharing his original pursuits into investment banking and the financial arena followed by his awakening to begin modeling his life using an ancestral and evolutionary perspective. Describing his “child like” and playful approach away from the jungle gym, Darryl outlines how his perspective has changed within the health and wellness field from one of dispensing of concrete knowledge, to one of playful curiosity, asking questions and holding space for others to cultivate their own questions and encourage openness rather than concrete certainty. Moving into a discussion of human behavior, Darryl offers some insightful wisdom taken from the observation of humans as we collectively pursue convenience, yet accumulate chronic health issues. Sharing ways to positively avoid convenience, Darryl provides his approach to addressing chronic health concerns by encouraging a playful mind, body and spirit, positively avoiding convenience and including play where you didn't think it was possible. Getting into a necessary, but perhaps controversial topic, Darryl and I begin to explore how the greater ancestral health movement currently needs to change in order to become more inclusive and address the current barriers in education, language and accessibility. Sharing a personal example from his own life, seeking to help his mother address type ii diabetes, Darryl explains how he had to change and adapt his own educational approach to practically help his mother make the changes necessary to positively improve her health. Darryl ends the conversation sharing some of his amazing resources educating us all on the practical ways we can cultivate play into our lives. From his website including blog and videos, to a recently released book, and Animal Moves play card deck, Darryl has created some of the most enriching resources for anyone seeking to avoid convenience and cultivate joy. And with that, let's dig into the show!
