‘Yoga can be a natural antidote to trauma’ Caitlin Lainer Yogakane Podcast Episode Trauma-Sensitive Yoga Disclaimer about this episode - it may trigger some individuals since we do talk about sexual assault and trauma and I invite you to listen to this episode at your pace and listen to your body as you move through this episode and feel free to pause In today’s episode I sit down with Caitlin Lainer she holds a Master’s degree in Social Work and teaches specialized trauma-informed yoga for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault in Boise, Idaho. Caitlin’s intention when serving as a yoga guide is always to provide a safe and supportive space for folks to explore, experiment, and investigate how various yoga forms feel in their bodies. Ultimately, her hope is that through listening to the unique language and wisdom of their bodies, folks will experience their own innate capacity for healing, resilience, and transformation. Caitlin has pioneered numerous trauma-informed yoga programs including a pilot program at the Women’s and Children’s Alliance, Boise State University’s Health Center, The College of Idaho’s Wellness Center, Tidwell Social Services, Saint Alphonsus’ CARE clinic, and Lifeways Counseling Center. Caitlin explains the difference between yoga and trauma-sensitive yoga. She explains how to create a safe container for your students. And the healing benefits of listening to the sensations of our own body. Caitlin shared a new term with me post-traumatic growth which encouraged me to open up and share my experience of growth being a sexual assault survivor. Caitlin talks to me about how yoga is a natural antidote to trauma and she goes into how we can utilize the window of tolerance to manage stress and anxiety especially during the chronic trauma we are experiencing collectively with covid -19. We also discuss comparative suffering and how as a society we struggle with discussing or looking at trauma. My guest for this episode really made me think more about my life off of the Yoga mat. Because I don’t know about you, but the more I practice the asana or physical yoga practice, the more I want to take care of my body. I find myself being more intentional and aware of what I put into my body and the people I surround myself with. I think, how am I going to feel after this experience, is it going to serve me? Is it going to bring out my best or authentic self? Yoga sorta cracks us open to ourselves and we begin to step into a more self-aware life. Kamala is Sanskrit for lotus. Throughout time the lotus flower has been a powerful spiritual symbol. A lotus has its roots in the mud, at the bottom of ponds. But it grows to become the most beautiful flower despite its origins. It symbolizes growth and spiritual development and is an example on how we too can overcome all obstacles on our journey toward enlightenment. Welcome to episode 2 PART 2 of Yogakane with Ara Lyman the owner of the Spokane Yoga Shala. Yogakane (yoga-can) because every BODY can do Yoga, is a podcast all about the amazing Yoga community in the Pacific Northwest. So before this episode Ara and I didn't know each other that well, but we have meant on a number of occasions and when we do we geek out about Yoga. The last time we did this was at the Northwest Yoga Feast, a Yoga festival in Sagle, ID. Mark your calendars the Northwest Yoga Feast is happening this summer weekend of July 19. Sign up for the festival on their website and follow them on social media. Anyways, at the feast Ara and I were chatting and before you know it she had me demoing camel pose and she gave me some modifications which have helped me immensely in the pose. Ara and I cover a lot of ground, Ara takes you on her beautiful journey to the Yoga mat. Ara’s initial experience with yoga was very physical. In 2002 after experiencing painful tendinitis in her hamstrings, she sought yoga as relief. Within her first month of regular practice, she knew yoga would always be a part of her life. She began her practice in 2002 as a student of Alison Rubin at Harmony Yoga in Spokane. Alison’s teachings in the Iyengar style continue to influence her instruction. Adherence to precision, finding a healthy sustainable way of accessing the postures and respect for the roots and philosophy of yoga. Her yoga practice and teachings now encompass much more than just the physical body, but she understands that creating a deep connection to the physical self can be a gateway to connecting to the Sat Nam, True You Ara loves to practice and teach many styles of yoga and is currently combining Vinyasa Krama, Kundalini Yoga Kriya and sound healing in “Kundalini Flow” as inspired by her teacher Kia Miller. She has taught the Bikram/Ghosh, Core 26 style since 2010 and holds great respect for the grounding, healing, therapeutic nature of that series while bringing in her own knowledge of physical alignment, the energy body and breath, to allow for the greatest benefits to her students. In Ara’s classes, expect intuitively themed weekly sequences, to sing mantra, to sweat, to be safely physically challenged, to smile, to find your natural rhythm, to connect deeply with your breath in varied pranayama and asana exercises, and to relax into a sound bath savasana with himalayan bowls or the gong. She is a 200E-RYT through Yoga Alliance. She has received a 200hr certification through The Yoga School of Spokane, a 300hr certification through Yarrow Hot Yoga and Wellness Studio, a private Baptiste training with Rhea Slichter and a 200hr Radiant Body Kundalini certification from Kia Miller. ‘Our ideas our music our belief can be considered our offspring’ Episode 1 Neely Gibbons Wadden is Continuously Giving Birth: A Yogis Journey to Finding The Flow of Life There we were Neely, her two kittens, bird in the other room and myself, sitting in her living room, drinking tea and talking Yoga. We sat in front of a glass window of her more than 100 year old home, a book shelf filled with stories, inspiration, and knowledge sat to the right of us. The guest seemed comfortable and content, for the first podcast interview, I thought things couldn’t get much better than this. Flashback leading up to the interview, I was psyching myself up or more like out for my first interview for the podcast. Needless to say I was nervous and embarrassed. Thoughts of self doubt flooded my mind, ‘Will I be good enough?’ ‘Am I qualified to do this?’ ‘What do I know about Yoga?’ ‘Am I prepared enough for the interview?’ These thoughts that would freeze me in the past, freeze me to the point of not taking action. That was what was comfortable to me, filling myself up with self doubt, then I would begin to stall out drag my feet on my idea to the point that the idea would turn to dust. But not this time, l have been preparing for this. Over the past several months I have been doing some serious work to funnel and change the outcome of these self doubt thoughts. For this particular venture, I have put myself in the mindset of an adventure reporter, going out seeking story, news and being open to receive whatever came my way. The reason I can do this is because I have prepared myself. Mentally I have gotten myself to this point of trusting my gut, from a podcast host perspective, I learned my equipment and software to the point that I could host the podcast just about anywhere (sound quality would be at risk). The most amazing thing about all of this, is that the chat I had with Neely about her story to becoming a pre-natal and post-natal Yoga instructor in the Spokane region all had to do with her setting intention, trusting in her gut and riding the flow of her life. In this podcast, Neely takes you on her journey of how she was brought to the Yoga mat. To me if you listen to this thinking of her voice as river and her journey as multiple streams leaving the main river which then return back to it, you’ll begin to pick up on the flow her life so far. Neely and I met sometime in April of 2018, she taught the pre-natal portion of my 200 hour Yoga teacher training at Harmony Yoga lead by the beautiful Alison Rubin. She is extremely knowledgeable about pre-natal and post natal Yoga, she teaches Yoga to individuals at multiple stages of life, teen Yoga and individuals who are going through substance abuse recovery. I quickly realized that through her teaching of Yoga she is continuously supporting her students to give birth to a new part of their self. Neely teaches in many Yoga environments, she was first and still is a pre-natal instructor. Off the mat she uses the beautiful analogue that everything we produce is an offspring of ourselves. Meaning that we as humans are constantly giving birth. In the podcast, you’ll learn about how Neely teaches Yoga to people at different stages of life, where rebirth is occurring. Where to Find Neely She teachers three times a week at Royal Life Center Pre-Natal Class at Harmony Yoga In-between Yoga workshops for teenagers Mama Yoga Workshops Partner Yoga & Massage for Labor workshops Intermediate Yoga and Vinyasa Flow at Harmony Yoga On a more somber note starting in 2019 she will teach post natal or post miscarriage workshops for individuals who have lost a child at The Lotus Neely fills the space with warmth and comfort making it really easy to talk to her and just hang out with her! I guess being a Yoga teacher for eight years will do this to you. I couldn’t of asked for a better first guest for the podcast. Please enjoy!
