Here's part two. A live class I recorded at my Gentle Yoga class on a Thursday morning. You can come live to this one on Zoom if you like! I wanted to share it because it's focused on joint freedom and the class participants loved it so much I thought you might too. The cold can creep into our joints and make movement feel uncomfortable. This can happen at any age but those of us in our forties and beyond, especially us menopausal women can really feel it. This class shows you thay you don't have to feel uncomfortable - there is pleasure and ease to be found in the body, whatever your condition. Have your usual yoga props around you and be near a chair or wall if that helps you balance. If you have a resistance band and a massage ball or a dowel, have that around too. This week on the podcast I am joined by Ali Reina. Ali's yoga journey began in 2014 when she took a yoga class to help prepare her body physically for a half marathon but was amazed how yoga provided her the mind-body-soul connection that alleviated any worries and anxieties that she brought to the mat. A chronic health diagnosis a year later limited her physically as she was unable to exercise in the same way. Gentle yoga classes were the only types of exercise that she was able to do, and for her, yoga became a critical part of her healing journey and lifestyle change. A classroom teacher for 11 years, Ali decided to follow a new path in teaching others about the mind-body connection yoga has to offer. She received her 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training and is also certified in Yin Yoga, Chair Yoga, and Yoga Nidra. She created her business, Gentle Waves Yoga, in 2021 to educate others on the awareness of and experience the benefits of the gentler styles of yoga, especially for those with chronic health conditions. If you have beliefs about yoga that it is just not for you because you are either not flexible enough or fit enough, think again. The practice of yoga has taken on a mystical allure that can turn some people off from taking up this practice in the first place (myself included). The belief, according to social media, of being young fit, and strong has certainly not helped. Yet, yoga can play a vital role in our health, particularly as we get older. First, I will be talking about posture as a dynamic system and giving some information on my Feldenkrais series, Posture Matters, explaining how a Feldenkrais approach to posture restoration is different from other modalities. Then we will go into an abbreviated lesson. The lesson portion of today is a little taste of the first lesson in the Posture Matters series and begins around 21:33. Posture, including the tension in the shoulders and the neck that originates from a forwardness of one's head is one of the most requested topics I get from students. Episode 94: A 60 minute live class blending Feldenkrais and gentle yoga poses. In this class we explore creating a sense of width in the body. Oftentimes if our eyes have a more narrow focus (like when we are looking at a fixed object such as a screen), then our whole body can start to shrink inward and feel compressed. Similar to the first Daily Decompression class, this gentle class gives you another opportunity to release tension in your mind and body. You will practice deep breathing as well as postures that aim to increase mobility and stretch your chest, hips, and shoulders. Take this time to slow down, nurture yourself, and unwind.
Again, for Yin Yoga, you will need any of these props... bolsters, blocks, pillows or cushions. Yin Yoga focuses on stretching the deep connective tissues in our bodies (ligaments, tendons, and fascia), rather than the more superficial muscle tissue. You will hold these floor-based postures for several minutes supported by the prop/s. Finding a point of challenge at first, you then absorb yourself into the practice with ease, allowing release of the deeply held tensions that we hold in the body and unleashing the stagnant or blocked energy. Ideal for beginners and those who wish to deepen their already established practice. This practice will focus a great deal on the hips.

In this episode with Fiona Agombar we talk about yoga therapy for fatigue conditions, including CFS/ME, burnout, stress and long-Covid, which Fiona specialises in. Fiona Agombar is an author, Rest Activist and yoga therapist in the Krishnamacharya Tradition. She originally trained with the Yoga for Health Foundation in 2001 then qualified as a KHYF teacher in 2011 and is accredited as an advanced teacher with the British Wheel of Yoga (BWY). She has studied under Bill Feeney, Gill Lloyd, Sarah Ryan, TKV Desikachar and also the Zen teacher Adyashanti. Fiona was a Trustee of Action for ME (major UK charity) for eight years. She was one of the key speakers for Global Yoga Therapy Day in August 2020 on exhaustion, overwhelm and burnout and a speaker at the Wellness After Covid Symposium in May 2021 and in March 2021 she contributed to the advisory meeting for the British Council of Yoga Therapy on guidelines for teaching those with long-Covid. She runs a successful introductory course for teachers on Burnout, CFS and Long-Covid with Sarah Ryan through Yoga Teachers Forum. She also runs weekly classes online for those with fatigue and has referrals for long-Covid from a major teaching hospital in the UK. Fiona will be teaching the Long Covid module with Nadyne McKie for the Minded Institute's Yoga Therapy training in 2022. Fiona and Nadyne have also been commissioned to write a book on Long Covid for Singing Dragon books and are part of a steering committee being set up by Westminster University to investigate the benefits of Yoga for Long Covid. Fiona is the author of the book and DVD Beat Fatigue with Yoga (Cherry Red Books) and Yoga Therapy for Stress, Burnout and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (Singing Dragon). Fiona has Lyme disease which she manages with yoga. She is passionate about campaigning to change attitudes to those with fatigue conditions and describes herself as a Feminine Rest Activist. In today's episode, I'll talk about that one time I got a 1-star review online for a Gentle Yoga class at my studio. Every yoga teacher learns that not everyone has to like your class. So, this is part of the territory - especially with the gentle stuff. But there was something about this review that got me thinking more deeply about why someone might have this reaction to a slow, gentle class. Listen in to unpack some of the cultural assumptions (like "I need to be productive" or "this doesn't burn enough calories") that keep people from enjoying gentle yoga. And maybe together we can rethink what it means to "deepen" our practice. Hello! My name is Shanna and I am a dog loving, yoga teaching, modern day hippie walking through life as a fat yogi.
