Vision is the ancestor to awareness, as a thought is the ancestor to an action. I had never considered before that vision and awareness are so closely related, and that you cannot have one without the other. There is no clear dividing line between where one stops and the other starts; they merge into one. Want to clear a room? Talk about suicide. Want to please a room? Make a joke. Want to confuse a room? Make a joke about suicide. As of 2019, I had a couple of fun letter combinations that specified my special brand of “crazy”. You didn't ask, but here they are: ADHD, GAD, MDD. An attempt to neatly package the type of suffering I endured and the duration of said suffering. Forced into hiding after being ordered off air by the Taliban at gunpoint, Mehr Mursal Amiri, 24, was ordered 'to go home, remain there and never return' after militant Islamists burst into Afghanistan's National TV network RTA's studios in Kabul, as female news anchors are now banned from the air. She was also berated for wearing make-up and refusing to wear a hijab. Mehr, who is in her final year of a law degree, says, “Everything has changed and for the worse. Democracy is over and the future is very dark, particularly for women in my country.” We spoke from her place in hiding. What follows is the full, unfiltered and unedited conversation. A known and trusted news anchor, beloved by Afghans, Mehr is young enough to be my daughter. Her heart and hope mirroring my own make her a daughter by virtue. - Allié M. The beach and the ocean have been playing a special and integral part of my life for the past few years, but even more so recently. It serves as a short refuge from some of my physical issues as well as helping me to balance out my thoughts. Spending time weightless in the water, the taste of salt on my lips and at times the cold biting at my skin feels like a completely different world. It reminds me of how much the body can endure and keep going, and how suffering can be more mental than physical at times. When we were created, we started life as a full Pencil; eager to write out our story on life's page and leave our mark upon the world and all of those in it. We are all unique with different colours, shades and strengths. The origins of a Pencil come from nature. The wood of a tree, which itself was once a seed. Lead from the earth, as a raw mix of minerals and metals. The lead in the Pencil is then enclosed by a layer of wood and given a polished final finish. This covering serves as our outside interface between the inside and outside worlds. What the world doesn't see, beneath the protective cover, is the invisible core: our creativity and magic. This magic inside can only be shown to the outside world through our actions and acts on the paper of life. It is not the wood that creates the story but what lies beneath the wood. This past week my family and I lost my cousin to the clutches of drug addiction and I continually wonder - what was going on inside Elan genetically, psychologically, socially and environmentally? Unity is defined as a state of being united or joined as one. It is also used to describe ‘being in harmony'. The ultimate unity is the universe. Literally translated, it is Uni (one) Verse (song). As far as we know, we all come from this one song. Trouble is, have we somehow forgotten the words? Sight reveals our current reality and vision allows us to see past our reality. It will take time, but let's make an honest effort to suffocate the systems created to marginalize people of color, and let's eradicate the evil that is currently seen by eyes everywhere. Things look blurry and bleak at the moment, but if we operate on the problem specifically that is ruining our mind's eye, things will eventually change, and a new vision will emerge. A vision where our thoughts, actions and behaviors are guided by a genuine love that resides in the hearts and minds of us all. We are not all meant to be the same in shape, size or in our points of view because we've all developed distinctive perspectives born out of our lived experiences. What I hope to accomplish in writing this column is to open up conversations around embracing our diversity in every aspect of our humanity and to be a supporter of the truth that is based in science, history, and empirical evidence. I love playing make believe and pretending to live in a fantasy world but I think it's of paramount importance to be honest with myself and to be able to draw distinctive boundaries between what is real and what is phantasmagorical. There is a lot of talk about gratitude. Gratitude is a two-part transaction which results in a positive deposit for both parties. First, the giving part, which is the classic definition of giving. We live under this presumption that home is a physical place. But home embodies so much more than that. It can be a space in our mind, a person who accepts us, a foundation that we build in ourselves and others through our character. With one in three women experiencing violence globally, an unknown number of male victims of assault and sexual abuse (although likely more than 1 in 6), and countless LGBTQ+ victims of trauma, many of us have had our sense of security rocked and stolen. Here's the good news. We can get it back. We can create it internally and choose to live there instead of in the chaos that our suffering and social pressures choose to enmesh us in. Particularly for survivors of intimate partner violence, domestic violence and child abuse, having this space is vital. Your home can be unshakeable. Because the strength you have and show just by being here is capable of accomplishing that. Sol Rising began meditating at age four with a walking mantra technique. His mother took him to visit numerous spiritual teachers, who inspired him on the spiritual path he walks today. As a teenager, he became a hip hop fanatic. His rooted interest in hip hop led him to learning the art of scratching — using turntables as musical instruments. Sol Rising soon became one of America's top scratch DJs, winning second place at the DMC, the world's most prestigious DJ competition and first place at Scribble Jam, the same competition that Eminem competed in along with other notable underground artists. Now a successful Producer with 16 albums released, Sol Rising has been streamed over 42 million times on Spotify and Apple music. Caitlin has pioneered numerous trauma-informed yoga programs including a pilot program at the Women’s and Children’s Alliance, Boise State University’s Health Center, The College of Idaho’s Wellness Center, Tidwell Social Services, Saint Alphonsus’ CARE clinic, and Lifeways Counseling Center. Caitlin explains the difference between yoga and trauma-sensitive yoga. She explains how to create a safe container for your students. And the healing benefits of listening to the sensations of our own body. Caitlin shared a new term with me post-traumatic growth which encouraged me to open up and share my experience of growth being a sexual assault survivor. Caitlin talks to me about how yoga is a natural antidote to trauma and she goes into how we can utilize the window of tolerance to manage stress and anxiety especially during the chronic trauma we are experiencing collectively with covid -19. We also discuss comparative suffering and how as a society we struggle with discussing or looking at trauma. If you’ve gone (or taken online) to a yoga class recently, you’ve heard Sol Rising’s music. His original soundscapes evoke feelings of inspiration and bliss through an eclectic mix of electronic music, mid-tempo house, chill-trap, ambient and hip-hop. Basically a modern version of yoga music with out the kirtan. Today on the show we get to dive into Sol Rising or Brandon Au’s back story from being top 5% in his accounting class to headlining yoga events across the world. He began meditating at age four with a walking mantra technique. His mother took him to visit numerous spiritual teachers, who inspired him on the spiritual path he walks today. As a teenager, he became a hip hop fanatic. His rooted interest in hip hop led him to learning the art of scratching — using turntables as musical instruments. Sol Rising soon became one of America’s top scratch DJs, winning second place at the DMC, the world’s most prestigious DJ competition. After graduating, he realized accounting was not his path. A journey to India with Sai Maa illuminated his true calling — to light up people’s awareness of their true nature through music. This lead him to study audio engineering and production at Pyramind Studios in San Francisco, CA.Now a successful Producer with over 10 albums released (with many more on their way), Sol Rising has licensed music for brands such as Apple, Clarks Shoes and US Polo as well as a placement in Academy Award winning director Paolo Sorrentino’s latest film “Loro.” Sol Rising has been featured in major media outlets including The Washington Post and Yoga Journal, and has also been streamed over 10 million times on Spotify. Sol Rising has toured in the US, Canada, Europe, Asia and Australia at festivals such as Wanderlust, Burning Man and Lightning in a Bottle.Listen to hear the journey of any creative and heart centered person to keep showing up (even when the next step isn’t clear). Justin Michael William’s newly remixed single “Here With Me,” we hear the shards of pain as he hopes for his love lost to return as he struggles to come to face with himself in a world that does not always make it easy to do so. LISTEN: Justin Michael Williams "Here With Me" https://soundcloud.com/wejustwill/here-with-me-sol-rising-remix The fresh take on the track was remixed by Sol Rising and places a more sonic and trap vibe on a gut wrenching melody. By doing so, Justinconveys the meaning of love lost and self-acceptance with a whole new undertone. In summary, the album “Metapmorphosis” channels classic elements of love, loss, and self-acceptance and is a brilliant examination of the human experience through Justin’s eyes. The newly remixed “Here With Me” is sure to both bring you solace and joy as it highlights the human experience through a ballad infused by a fresh and exciting trap beat. Maybe, just maybe, all those LGBT girls, boys, men, and women out there searching for themselves will hear this new track and find it just all little easier to carry on.
