October 23, 2023The Funny Thing About YogaThe Student-Teacher Paradigm Shift LIVE from Zen Yoga GarageEpisode No. 37This week Giana and Bradshaw bring back Melissa Talleda, Managing director of Zen Yoga Garage to host an in-studio event and podcast recording. On Friday, October 20th the three of them co-taught a 60-minute yoga class demoing different teaching styles then the group stayed for the live and interactive podcast recording. In this week's episode, you will hear the discussion that took place that night. The teacher-student paradigm was at the forefront of this conversation, and Giana began by discussing a few of the many ways the relationship has changed. They talk about what students look for in a teacher, hands-on assists, the business side of things, different teaching and learning styles, and so much more. Not only do these three detail their experiences as young students and how that experience shaped their yoga world, but how with more knowledge and growth they continue to show up as teachers in a changing field. Navigating these shifts- be It COVID, Me Too, Black Lives Matter, or the Body Positivity movement, has greatly influenced how they show up to the yoga room. And these same social movements have also affected how students receive and perceive information. So has the rise of on-demand virtual classes, mediated imagery of "yoga," social media scrolling and so much more. From shorter attention spans to multiple sources of information, teachers are often left feeling defeated. Ultimately this discussion poses two major questions: how can teachers better serve their students? And how can students become better students?Follow Us on Instagram:@TheFunnyThingAboutYoga @CayaYogaSchool @GianaGambino @BradshawWishSubscribe to Substack to Receive extra bonus FUNNY THING content:https://thefunnythingaboutyoga.substack.com/?r=2m1azy&utm_campaign=pub&utm_medium=webCurious about our 200-hour? October 9, 2023The Funny Thing About YogaTeaching Opportunities, Auditions, and All Things MoneyEpisode No. 35This week Giana and Bradshaw talk about the different places yoga teachers can teach, auditioning, and all things money. September 5, 2023The Funny Thing About YogaThis Wasn't in the Job DescriptionEpisode No. 31In today's episode, “This wasn't in the Job Description,” Giana and Bradshaw talk about many of the atypical situations they have encountered in their collective 19 years of teaching experience. From medical emergencies and dealing with intruders, to conflict management and everything in between, the hosts get very candid about many different situations that have challenged them to think quickly and improvise all while caring for and safeguarding their students. This isn't an episode of just jokes and laughs, though some of the absurdity can be seen as comical, It is an episode that gets deeply personal and reflects how both of them have responded to stimuli and sometimes stressful circumstances while on the job. These stories are shared with the intention of shedding light on the many different hats yoga teachers are sometimes asked to wear in hopes that their learning moments provide lessons or comfort to other teachers who have been in similar situations. With each of these stories shared came an opportunity for growth and we're honored to be growing along with all of you. That gave him the opportunity to learn Sanskrit, the spiritual scriptures and the inner science from an early age. He spent lots of time in different Ashrams and absorbed the original forms of Tantra Yoga. Later, he studied and worked in Krishnamurti's school. This gave him a deep understanding about the network of thought and the way out of it through awakening the capacity to just observe and listen to one's mind without any judgement and identification. Rishi then went on to study with Himalayan Yoga Masters and modern Gurus from south India such as Patabhi Jois and B.K.S. Iyengar. He is a life long disciple of the enlightened master Osho and spent several years in Osho's community. He translated many Osho books from Hindi to English during his Work as Meditation program at Osho International Meditation Resort. Rishi travelled to Europe, America and many Asian countries extensively and taught traditional Tantra and Yoga in their original form. According to Rishi, the radical transformation in his being started taking place during ‘Work as Meditation' at Osho's Ashram. As Osho says- ‘You work for me and I'll work on you'. This statement started manifesting in Rishi's life. He describes the process as rewiring of his whole physical and energetic system to a higher template based on inner ecstasy. His yoga Guru Mr. Iyengar requested him to start a Yoga School in India. With the help of his beloved friends and Osho's Sannyasins, Lila, Sasa and Swami Ansh his Yoga School was started in Goa and it became a great success in a very short period of time. It is Rishi's passion to bring to people's awareness the fact that the twin systems of Tantra and Yoga have never really been separate. They are two aspects of Sanatanam Dharma, the eternal flow of truth.

We start off this episode with a cautionary tale about what happens when you experience debilitating back pain and don't listen to your body, but try to work through the pain. Our guest Sally Parkes, began her journey in the health and fitness industry in 1998 after qualifying as a personal trainer and gaining a bachelor in Sport Science in the year 2001. Soon after, she experienced a deep calling to explore a more holistic approach to movement and breath, which led to Sally certifying as a yoga and pranayama teacher, training with Paul Dallaghan and Sri O.P.Tiwari at Yoga Thailand, where Harmony first met her during the time she was living and teaching there. We dive deep into the troubling beginnings of what brought Sally to the this path of yoga in the first place. A path which she believes wholeheartedly saved her life. Since then, Sally has gone on to train as a doula with Michel O'Dent and as a Pilates teacher with A.P.P.I. (Australian Pilates Physiotherapy and Pilates Institute), and has established her own yoga teacher training school The Sally Parkes Yoga Academy in 2010, training over 1500 yoga teachers to date. Now specializing in solely women's wellness, Sally's academy offers yoga that honors the cycles of menstruation, fertility, pregnancy, postnatal and menopause. If you really want to laugh, you have to listen til the very end to hear one of the most outrageous “funny thing” moments talked about yet. Giana and Bradshaw laugh so hard that the mics hardly pick up their frequency. This episode is really important to us and we feel It's just the beginning of what could be many conversations. April 24, 2023The Funny Thing About YogaThings Yoga Teacher's Do Well. Episode No. 11Giana and Bradshaw start this episode off with some friendly banter and address Bradshaw's voice, being called Mrs. Wish and having strangers “yes ma'am” him on the phone. Naturally this leads to a conversation about working through major tangents during their online trainings and holding space for students- a segue to the actual topic of the day, Things Yoga Teachers Do Well. This episode details the skills and qualities they both love to see in a yoga teacher. Though they can agree and disagree at times, they talk about moments of silence, showing up as your authentic self, really seeing your students, using positive cues, fostering autonomy, confidence, critical thinking and the ability to admit when you don't know something or if something is outside of your scope of practice. Of course they have to share stories about Beyonce, Obama, Giana's former celebrity client, and a recent absurd and uncomfortable experience at a hot yoga studio. All this before a casual game of Cancel, Explore, Commit and ‘The Funny Thing About Yoga.' This may be one of the most unhinged episodes yet, but we had a lot of fun recording It. 00:00 Intro00:30 Welcome Back Shenanigans 04:45 Todays Topic: Things That Inspire Us in a Yoga Teacher06:32 Allow Room for Silence 07:50 Cultivating Autonomy 11:34 Don't say Don't 14:06 Be Authentic 16:03 Beyonce, Obama and Name Dropping18:58 Appropriation and Authenticity21:56 Be Confident & Humble - Stay in your Scope26:10 Teachers can Hold Space and Refer28:02 Yoga Teachers should See their Students32:10 Unique and Critical Thinkers33:37 Cancel, Explore, Commit34:50 The Funny Thing About Yoga39:55 Nicaragua Retreat, Join Us!40:52 OutroFollow Us on Instagram:@TheFunnyThingAboutYoga @CayaYogaSchool @GianaGambino @BradshawWishJoin us in Nicaragua: https://www.cayayogaschool.com/nicargua Be Featured on the Podcast: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSck2nTNc_UlcCKBhZId5DmDwoU6aslkFfGKtdz-1uSo-HNY8g/viewformSubscribe to our Newsletter: https://www.cayayogaschool.com/contactFollow us on IG: https://www.instagram.com/thefunnythingaboutyoga/Learn more about C.A.Y.A. April 17, 2023The Funny Thing About YogaTeacher Compensation and Corporate Yoga with Amy ApgarEpisode No. 10This week Giana and Bradshaw are joined by Amy Apgar, a yoga teacher and strength trainer based in New York City. The three met in Chicago in early 2020 before the pandemic and have been following each other virtually ever since. The inspiration for bringing Amy on the podcast is to bring transparency around her experience working in the corporate yoga world and to shine a light on a topic that is often considered taboo, compensation. Pay is not spoken about publicly enough and It's time we start a conversation in an effort to raise awareness and inspire change. Yoga Teachers deserve to be paid fairly for their services and be taken care of in return. Most yoga teachers do not receive health insurance, paid time off, and in many states they're hired as independent contractors rather than employees. Plus many employers ask for more time before and after class that often goes unpaid and also includes responsibilities and miscellaneous tasks that go beyond what is in the job description. Amy has been vocal about these issues on social media and making waves in the industry because of It. And in this episode Amy gets really real about her experiences and gives us some hope for a path forward. You can anticipate full transparency into a sector of this industry and for the listeners out there working in the field, we truly hope you feel seen and inspired. 00:00 Intro00:34 Welcome Back and Thank You!01:24 What we get into Today with Amy Apgar01:50 How we met Amy and what she's been up to..02:50 Amy tells her Story05:54 Where are you Teaching now?06:34 Amy explains what its like to teach Yoga in a Corporate Gym12:50 Bradshaw talks about Corepower14:50 Bradshaw talks about Quitting a different Corporate Job19:45 Amy talks Corporate Onboarding21:17 Rebuilding after Covid22:44 We need to Talk about Pay24:30 Gender Inequalities 26:00 The Challenge of Generating Change29:20 Amy and Giana can relate to Rebuilding29:50 Transparency with Pay and Amy's Reel37:00 Pay a Living Wage and Keep your Talent39:10 We're Starting a Conversation and Raising Awareness41:00 Bradshaw asks Amy about her past job46:30 How can we Make Change48:32 Giana gives advice on how to build It on your own49:30 Band Together- Unionize!50:27 Cancel-Explore-Commit52:06 The Funny Thing About Yoga56:43 Find Amy Online! 57:37 OutroFollow Amy Apgar on Instagram at @amyritual Check out her Reel Here: https://www.instagram.com/reel/Cn5CfS_jihS/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_linkAmys Website: https://www.amyapgar.com/Follow Us on Instagram:@TheFunnyThingAboutYoga @CayaYogaSchool @GianaGambino @BradshawWishJoin us in Nicaragua: https://www.cayayogaschool.com/nicargua Be Featured on the Podcast: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSck2nTNc_UlcCKBhZId5DmDwoU6aslkFfGKtdz-1uSo-HNY8g/viewformLearn more about C.A.Y.A. And somehow, this beginning tangent actually relates to the topic at hand here: Setting a Vibe for your yoga classes. This includes everything you do from the moment you enter the studio, honestly.
