From spiritual forgetfulness to dangerous blind spots, the ancient stories about King Josiah and the fall of Judah in 2 Chronicles 35-36 transcend time and reveal timeless patterns of human nature and God's persistent love. They inspired and taught the returning exiles, and they speak directly to challenges we face today. Themes of this podcast:The power of remembering our redemption. During difficult seasons of life, it's easy to forget our past victories and God's faithfulness. But just as Josiah organized the greatest Passover in 400 years to help people remember their freedom from Egypt, we need regular practices that remind us of what God has done in our lives. Wake up to where you're headed. God was trying to visibly wake the people up as they watched their kings carried off to captivity. We all experience lapses in faith when we are blind to our own sin. And God calls to us...wake up, wake up! What are you doing? Look at where you are headed! This challenges us to honestly assess the trajectory of our choices and listen when God is warning us through circumstances, wise counsel, or His Word.Responding to God's invitation to "go up." Just as Cyrus invites the exiles to "go up" out of slavery to Jerusalem and rebuild the Temple, Christ's invitation to us is to "go up" out of spiritual darkness and slavery to sin. Both required a choice to say "yes" to God's call. God is constantly inviting us into a deeper relationship with Him, into freedom from whatever enslaves us, and into becoming who He created us to be. The question remains: Will we respond with our "yes"?Show notes:BlogWe love feedback, but can't reply without your email address. Message us your thoughts and contact info! This week, we begin a brand new sermon series through the Old Testament books of Ezra and Nehemiah.  This series is called "A Work in Progress."  These two books of the bible detail how God's people rebuilt the Temple and the walls of Jerusalem.  However, while they were working on building the city, God was working on building his people. In this week's sermon, entitled Demolition Day, Pastor Brian takes us back to the last chapter of Second Chronicles to help set the stage for all of the work that is about to unfold - both on the ground of the city and in the hearts of the people.

In our last episode, the Lord God turned away the messengers of King Sennacherib of Assyria and his armies, sending his angel to strike down 185,000 in their camp. Sometime during those days of the Assyrian threat, Hezekiah became terminally ill. After Isaiah prophesies that his illness will end in death, Hezekiah prays to the Lord and the Lord hears, granting him another 15 years of life. It's not long, however, before Hezekiah gets cocky and shows off his sweet digs to his neighbors, the Babylonians. Of course, we know that won't end well. Isaiah tells Hezekiah that some of his descendants will be taken captive to Babylon, but that matter much to Hezekiah; he's just glad it won't happen during his lifetime.Isaiah 38 - 1:10 . Isaiah 39 - 6:29 . 2 Kings 20 - 8:52 . 2 Chronicles 32:20 - 13:59 . Psalm 148 - 17:24 .  :::Christian Standard Bible translation. All music written and produced by John Burgess Ross.Co-produced by the Christian Standard Bible.facebook.com/commuterbibleinstagram.com/commuter_bibletwitter.com/CommuterPodpatreon.com/commuterbibleadmin@commuterbible.org

“O our God, won’t you stop them? We are powerless against this mighty army that is about to attack us. We do not know what to do, but we are looking to you for help.” (2 Chronicles 20:12 NLT) Jehoshaphat, the king of Judah, was in trouble. The armies of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir had joined forces to attack their common enemy, Judah. Military strategy, no matter how brilliant or daring, would not be able to overcome the size differential of the fighting forces. The armies that were descending on Judah had the potential to annihilate. King Jehoshaphat recognized that this was no time for false bravado. All he could do was pray and trust in God’s mercy and strength. In 2 Chronicles 20, we find him standing with his men, along with their families and children, praying, “O our God, won’t you stop them? We are powerless against this mighty army that is about to attack us. We do not know what to do, but we are looking to you for help” (verse 12 NLT). God’s answer came through Jahaziel, one of the men standing with the king. “This is what the Lord says: Do not be afraid! Don’t be discouraged by this mighty army, for the battle is not yours, but God’s” (verse 15 NLT). I love that scene. Humanly speaking, it is a picture of weakness. King Jehoshaphat was saying, in effect, “Lord, here we are. We have the kids. We have an army coming toward us. What am I going to do here? Our eyes are on You.” That is a good thing to pray. God answered Jehoshaphat’s prayer, intervened, and rescued the people of Judah. In the New Testament, we read of a time when there was a storm at sea, and the disciples were calling out to God for help. Jesus finally showed up, walking toward them on the water. He had arrived during the fourth watch of the night, which is the last part of the night, right before the sun begins to rise. Technically, it’s the morning, but it still feels like it’s night. This means the disciples had been toiling at sea for hours, trying to get through that storm, and Jesus came along at the last possible moment. The point is that He did come to them. And He will do the same for you and me. He always will—when the time is right. We need to just trust Him. God’s reckoning of time is much more accurate than ours is. He is eternal. He can see past, present, and future with perfect clarity. He knows the ripple effect of every action. He also knows how to bring good from any situation. He is the perfect Consultant—One who wants only the best for us and knows when and how that best can be achieved. Remember this: He loves us with an everlasting love. That love is not fickle. That love doesn’t change. That love is persistent. That love is consistent. We are loved by God. Reflection question: When have you experienced God’s amazing timing? The book of Chronicles reflects on the history of Israel with a look ahead to the end of the exile and the rebuilding of the Temple. The authors focus on worship and service in the Temple, previewing the time of Jesus. In addition, we see a glimpse of Jesus's eternal reign in the reign of Solomon. As the history of Israel seems to come to an end, God has other plans to fulfill his promises and continue his faithfulness to his people.

Over the next few days we'll be reading regularly from three books, 2 Chronicles, 2 Kings, and Isaiah, as we continue pursuing a fairly linear chronological reading of the Old Testament. At the point in the history of God's people, Hezekiah is on the throne in Jerusalem and Isaiah is simultaneously prophesying in Judah. The kings of Assyria are knocking on the front door, taunting those in power. This not only includes the king and his officials, but God himself, whom they mock and equate to the gods of other nations. Today, you'll hear the account of Sennacherib's royal spokesman who seeks to insult, discourage and dishearten the men of Judah before their impending military confrontation.2 Chronicles 32:1-19 - 1:09 . 2 Kings 18 - 5:29 . Isaiah 36 - 14:50 .  :::Christian Standard Bible translation. All music written and produced by John Burgess Ross.Co-produced by the Christian Standard Bible.facebook.com/commuterbibleinstagram.com/commuter_bibletwitter.com/CommuterPodpatreon.com/commuterbibleadmin@commuterbible.org

Recall that in our timeline of Judah's kings the most recent king was Ahaz, who proved to be the most evil in king in Judah's history up until that time. He not only worshipped other gods, but sacrificed his children to them as an act of pagan worship. When his son Hezekiah comes to power, he literally cleans house, restoring the temple of the Lord so that all Israel could be called back to worship the God of their ancestors. The priests and the Levites are called upon to consecrate themselves for worship, and they do everything by the book. When the temple has been made ready, they celebrate the Passover early because the people had not done so in a long time. Scripture records that nothing like this has happened since the days of King Solomon. :::Christian Standard Bible translation. All music written and produced by John Burgess Ross.Co-produced by the Christian Standard Bible.facebook.com/commuterbibleinstagram.com/commuter_bibletwitter.com/CommuterPodpatreon.com/commuterbibleadmin@commuterbible.org

We meet three very different kings in this episode of 2 Chronicles 32–34. One who trusts God in crisis, one who repents after deep rebellion, and another who is transformed by God's Word. God alone saves. When human strength fails, God proves He alone can save. Hezekiah's story reminds us that prayer, faith, and godly counsel will triumph over any fear or threat. No one is too far gone. Manasseh's dramatic turnaround reveals that no sin is too great for God's mercy. True repentance can bring restoration, no matter how far we've fallen.God's Word sparks revival. Josiah's response to hearing the Book of the Law shows the power of Scripture to convict, guide, and spark personal and national revival.Show Notes:BlogWe love feedback, but can't reply without your email address.
