Pasted text Pasted text2 Chronicles 6 reminds us that prayer begins with dependence and rests on what God has already said. It also shows us the difference between regret and repentance: regret wants the consequences to stop, but repentance wants the rebellion to stop. Scripture is unambiguous about that. The judgment of God is inevitable, irreversible, and unavoidable. I am as certain of that reality. But the good news is this: It is possible to avoid the judgment of God.  And in some cases, it is even possible to postpone the judgment of God. That may sound surprising. But consequences… that's another matter entirely.  We all know this in everyday life. A person can get drunk, crash their car, and later repent. God can forgive the sin of drunkenness completely, but the smashed car still needs repairing. The insurance still needs to be paid at the higher rate, if you can get insurance at all.... The consequences remain. In that case, the consequences are reversible. The car can be fixed, and the damage can be undone. But other situations have irreversible consequences. Forgiveness can be found, but the fallout cannot be undone. For ourselves and for others. 2 Chronicles 33 offers a powerful illustration of that truth. Worship had been neglected, the temple doors had been shut, and the people had grown accustomed to a life without the presence of the Lord at the centre. But then comes Hezekiah, a young king with a heart set on restoring what had been lost. His first acts as king weren't political or military; they were spiritual. He reopened the temple, called the priests and Levites together, and began the work of cleansing, restoring, and renewing the worship of God. This chapter offers a clear picture of what genuine response to God looks like. It shows us that when God calls His people back to Himself, the right response is not vague spirituality or half‑hearted gestures. It is decisive, practical, and wholehearted. Hezekiah's actions reveal a pattern for us today. A pattern of returning, cleansing, recommitting, and rejoicing in the presence of God. So, in this episode, titled “How Should We Respond to God?”, we're going to walk through this chapter and draw out the helpful principles it offers. What does it look like to respond to God when He prompts our hearts? How do we rebuild what has been neglected? And how can we cultivate a life where worship is restored to its rightful place? Sometimes the whole spiritual structure needs to be rebuilt. A very similar thing happened in the Old Testament when Hezekiah became king; he discovered that the temple, because of years of neglect and idolatry, was filled with debris, defilement, and disorder. It needed to be cleansed. It needed to be reopened. Jordan Iacobucci discusses 2 Chronicles 1:10—“Now give me wisdom and knowledge, that I may go out and come in before this people; for who can judge this great people of Yours?”

While we finished reading about Josiah from 2 Kings, the book of 2 Chronicles has more to say about this king, including a lengthy description concerning the details of the Lord's Passover being reinstituted. We'll also read the book of Zephaniah, a prophet of royal lineage who had Hezekiah as his great grandfather. He writes during the reign of Josiah to proclaim that the day of the Lord is coming for the city of Ninevah. God will destroy the wicked as the city falls, but he will save a remnant in keeping with his covenant promises. Those who are humble are called to seek righteousness, humility, but most importantly, they are called to seek the Lord.2 Chronicles 35 - 1:04 . When father and mother provide a good example, that's a blessing. When they provide a bad example, the path forward is still clear, and the child must choose differently.But what happens when a parent provides a mixed example? Not entirely good, not entirely bad. A confusing blend of obedience and disobedience, devotion and compromise, strength and weakness. That can be very difficult for a child to navigate. Well, in the Old Testament, we find a story of a king who faced exactly that situation. His father's life was a mixture of moments of obedience, moments of rebellion, but also moments of strength and moments of failure. The question is: What can we learn from his choice? That story is recorded in 2 Chronicles 2, a short chapter, but a deeply instructive one. The Harmony of HIStories Series

We all can get caught up in playing a game of pretense: believing we are something more than what we really are. And that is essentially the problem when it comes to the dangerous detour away from God's will that the Bible calls PRIDE. It's tough to get a handle on the spiritual problem of pride because it's an internal quality that may not be seen by others, and it is often hidden even from our own understanding. Discover the antidote for this kind of pride in this episode of Gospel Wabi-Sabi.

In our last episode we were introduced to King Josiah who began his reign over Judah at the mere age of nine. As we pick up 2 Chronicles, we'll hear a parallel account to our reading from 2 Kings 22, but then we'll continue onward and cover more ground. After sending his men to consult a prophetess named Huldah, Josiah learns that the wrath of God is coming upon Judah soon. When Josiah realizes that their days are numbered, he cleans house both figuratively and literally. The Lord's temple was full of idolatrous objects and practices, and he gets rid of them all. The Lord honors Josiah's zeal and humility by promising that his wrath will not come upon Judah during the king's lifetime, but God will certainly send Judah into exile in the near future.2 Chronicles 34 - 1:05 . 2 Kings 23 - 9:59 . When we hear the word idolatry, we tend to picture an uncivilized person bowing down before a carved image. And yes, that is one form of idolatry. But it is definitely not the only form. According to the New Testament, believers can be guilty of idolatry. Paul says in Colossians 3:5 that greed is a form of idolatry. John warns believers in 1 John 5:21, “Dear children, keep yourselves from idols.”   And Paul tells the Corinthians to flee from idolatry — and remember, he is not writing to unbelievers or pagans, but to a Christian church. So, he obviously believed that Christians are always at risk of falling into idolatry. Idolatry is not just something that happens in primitive cultures. It is something that happens in the human heart. The message- that idolatry is foolish, irrational, and destructive comes from the Lord Himself. We completed the book of Isaiah in our last episode and now we're back in the narrative histories of 2 Chronicles and 2 Kings. Hezekiah's son Manasseh takes the throne and turns the good of his father's kingdom upside down by participating in every kind of spiritual evil imaginable. As such is the case, God says through his prophets that he will clean Jerusalem out like a bowl, turning it upside down. 2 Chronicles records that Manasseh is taken captive by Assyria later in life, at which point he repents and turns to the Lord for help. Before his death, he turns Judah back to the Lord, but only in partial obedience. His son Amon will take the throne after him, but will only reign for two years, repeating his father's mistakes.2 Chronicles 33 - 1:04 . 2 Kings 21 - 6:15 .
