It's said that "A lie will go 'round the world while truth is pulling its boots on." There was "fake news" even in the first century, and the fakest was that Paul was persuading Jews to abandon their religious identity. How does one combat a lie like that? Well, the church elders in Jerusalem had an idea. ... We're hearing the second half of Pastor Jim's sermon, Obedient, No Matter the Cost. "Is this the hill you want to die on?" It's good to be reminded that not all arguments have to be won, that not all causes are worth the ultimate sacrifice. Paul had picked his final battle. Though it grieved those who loved him, he knew the hill he wanted to die on - or the 7 hills, we could say. In our study today, we'll make it to Jerusalem with Paul and company. Welcome to Day 1612 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me.This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to WisdomBegin Now, Today – Daily WisdomWelcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps! Wisdom is the final frontier in gaining true knowledge. Our mission is to create a legacy of wisdom, seek out discernment and insights, and boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Hello, my friend; this is Gramps. Thanks for coming along on our trek to increase Wisdom and Create a Living Legacy. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs%2016%3A16&version=NLT (Proverbs 16:16)  How much better to get wisdom than gold, and sound judgment than silver!  Today is Day 1612 of our Trek, and it's time for another nugget of wisdom, which includes an inspirational quote along with some wise words from Gramps for today's trek. If you apply the words you hear today, over time, it will help you become more healthy, wealthy, and wise as you continue your daily trek of life. So let's jump right in with today's nugget: Today's quote is from   Louis L'Amour, and it is:  Your life always restarts today. Every morning is a beginning, a fresh start, and you needn't be hog-tied to the past. Whatever went before, your life can begin now, today. Begin Now, Today I understand that the consequences of past decisions will impact your future, but it does not need to control your destiny.  Every new day brings new opportunities to begin again. Why should you remain tied to your past when you have the choice and ability to untie the rope that binds you. A hog is one of the most challenging animals to tie up effectively because it is hard to hold onto, and their legs are short and taper smaller the closer to the hoof. If you have ever had the experience of tieing up a hog, you will better understand the quote for today on how secure a rope must be to keep the hog tied up. So it is with our past, if we allow it to be. There is one significant difference between you and the hog. You have a sharp knife to cut the rope and free yourself from the past, but you have to choose to use the knife.  If you just lay the pigpen of your past, feeling sorry for yourself, thinking that there is no hope, then you will never be free. Each new day you have to make that choice. Will you cut the ties that bind and set yourself free, or will you be content to be where you are? At the beginning of each new day, give thanks to the God of all creation. Live renewed knowing that God's mercies are also new every day. Free yourself from the shackles of the past. Lamentations 3:22-23 The faithful love of the Lord never ends! His mercies never cease. Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning   https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=John%208%3A36&version=NLT (John 8:36) So if the Son sets you free, you are truly free. As you ponder another bit of wisdom from Gramps, please encourage your friends and family to join us and then come along with us tomorrow for another day of ‘Wisdom-Trek, Creating a Legacy.' Christ Lutheran Church in Webster Groves, MO

March 3, 2021. What would people think if they knew you were a Christian? This evening, Katie Ciorba shares how simply putting a Christian music radio station bumper sticker on a car can trigger the fear of being excluded — but can also serve to bring people together in surprising ways. Readings: John 12:36-43 *** Transcript *** We stumbled upon 95.5 BOOST FM, with the catchy tagline "Pop, Hip Hop & Hope," as we were searching for a mutually agreed-upon song in the car. The positive voice of the DJs urged us to make a 30-day commitment to listen to BOOST FM and see if it changed our attitude or made us feel closer to God. I sarcastically said, “Let’s do it,” and Luther was immediately in — and not in a sarcastic way at all. He loves the beats of hip hop and the rhythms of rap, and gets frustrated by my constant policing of the often violent and anti-woman messages in this music. Listening to BOOST, Luther was instantly drawn into the DJs' messages, their feel good contests, and the music. In fact, he would vociferously remind me of our 30-day commitment anytime I tried to change the radio dial. At first, I worried his love of BOOST was an example of performative Christianity. He loves sports and adores the way athletes cross themselves, point up to God when they score, and kiss their crucifix necklaces. His only birthday wish this year was a cross necklace. I instantly rolled my eyes, chalking this up to a worship not of Christ, but specifically of masculinity. But we granted his wishes and he wears his cross proudly, everyday. Surprisingly, the DJs were right. After 30 days we became big-time BOOT fans — and not just in a sarcastic way. In the month of February, BOOST hosted “Give the Love” events around STL, where they gave away free treats and t-shirts. We attended these events, meeting the DJs and seeing other BOOST fans. Luther even called in the radio station one night to answer a question in a contest, winning a pair of tickets to a local trampoline park. We have learned most of the popular songs, and we've connected around the lyrics. We blast BOOST each night as we stretch and do gymnastics together in the basement. Some songs are fun and silly. Others are blatantly Christian. And still others delve into heavy, human topics in meaningful ways. Some of the music, frankly, isn’t that good. But I’ve developed a true appreciation for this shared language that gives Luther and me the opportunity to have real conversations about what it means to be a Christian, and what it means to be human. It’s given us a chance to talk about race in explicit ways. He noticed that lots of the fans of BOOST at the first “Boost the Love” event in University City were black, but when we went to a West County event most of the fans were white. It opened up conversations about segregation and race in St. Louis, and in February the BOOST DJs shared a daily Black History Month fact. And it was shared in a way that perked Luther's ears up every time. He listened intently. So, frankly I was surprised by my reaction to Luther’s request that we get a BOOST bumper sticker to put on my car. “What will people think?” I wondered. Did I want other drivers to know that I was a Christian? I’ve heard the jokes about watching out for the drivers with the Joy FM bumper stickers. What would my liberal friends think? What would my students think if they knew I was a Christian? I felt like those leaders in our text today who believed in Christ, but were afraid that by confessing their faith, the Pharisees would put them out of the synagogue. I’m currently in a class trying to learn new strategy to gain greater self-regulation. It's called HeartMath, and the goal is to try to balance your mind and body responses to stress and try to stay in a coherent state, not going into our “fight or flight” response. My teacher the other day said that for most of us, our biggest triggers are a fear of one of three things: 1) fear for our safety, 2) fears that something might block our success, or 3) the fear of not belonging. And I know for me, that fear of being out of the community, or out of the synagogue, is my biggest fear. My fear of embracing, announcing, and advertising my support of BOOST made me afraid that by telling the Truth — that I am a Christian — that I would be kicked out of the proverbial synagogue, that people would make further assumptions about my politics or way of living, that I wouldn’t belong. But Christ challenges us to shine his light, speak the gospel, tell the truth. As bravery goes, putting a bumper sticker on a car doesn’t rank up high. But I’m hoping it's a first, courageous step to embrace my love of Christ, and to share it more exuberantly, and my willingness to share it more lovingly with folks who need it. And I’m thankful for the loving push that Luther gave me, and I now see that his outward symbols of Christianity truly do come from a space of love and truth. Like him, I will outwardly BOOST the love of Christ. Amen. *** Keywords *** 2021, Christ Lutheran Church, testimonial, podcast, transcript, YouTube, video, Katie Ciorba, John 12:36-43

Wisdom is the final frontier in gaining true knowledge. Our mission is to create a legacy of wisdom, seek out discernment and insights, and boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Hello, my friend; this is Gramps; thanks for coming along on our journey to increase Wisdom and Create a Living Legacy. Today is Day 1552 of our Trek, and it's time for your daily snippet of wisdom, which includes an inspirational quote along with some wise words from Gramps for today's trek. If you apply the words you hear today, over time, it will help you become healthy, wealthy, and wise as you continue your daily trek of life. So let's jump right in with today's nugget: Today's quote is from  Martin Luther King, Jr., and it is:  Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter. Things That Matter  Let me ask you, what things matter to you? Are you silent about the things that truly matter? With today's social media frenzy and 24-hour news cycles, we see many people get very excited about whatever the current hot button for the day is, but do most of those things really matter? Can you even remember what the headlines of the day were a year ago, five years ago, or ten years ago? Probably not, and yet they seemed to be so crucial at the time. The things that truly matter are those things that endure over the decades and centuries. They are love, justice, and compassion for fellow humans throughout the world, not only in our little corner of the world. What matters is not empire building, but the continual establishment of God's kingdom on earth. These are the things that we cannot remain silent. God's kingdom, and our love for humankind, are of utmost importance, and these are not tied to any particular country or ethnic group but all humanity. It is such a simple concept, yet we seem to fall short of putting it into practice. The prophet Micah summed it up in https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Micah%206%3A8&version=NLT (Micah 6:8) No, O people, the Lord has told you what is good, and this is what he requires of you: to do what is right, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God. We try to complicate the issues, we get riled up, protest, and treat our fellow humans horribly about so many things that don't matter for eternity, and yet we remain silent on the fundamental principles found in God's Word. Jesus Christ taught us that all laws are summed up in two principles which are found in https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew+22%3A36-39&version=NLT (Matthew 22:36-39): “Teacher, which is the most important commandment in the law of Moses? Jesus replied, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.' The entire law and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments.” Let us not remain silent on things that matter. As you ponder this nugget of daily wisdom yourself, I would ask you to please encourage your friends and family to join us and then come along tomorrow for another day of ‘Wisdom-Trek, Creating a Legacy.' If you would like to listen to any of our past 1551 treks or read the Wisdom Journal, they are all available at Wisdom-Trek.com.  I encourage you to subscribe to Wisdom-Trek on your favorite podcast player so that each day will be downloaded to you automatically. During His earthly ministry there were some things Jesus didn't know. Does He know them now? When the Son laid down the privileges of deity and "was found in appearance as a man," it wasn't just His appearance that changed; His knowledge was limited, too! But that was only temporary. Ten Minute Bible Talks Devotional Bible Study

Want to join our 4-week Zoom Bible Study, "Are we living in the end times?" (https://info.thecrossingchurch.com/zoom-online-bible-studies) . We start Friday April 3 from 12:00-12:30 with a 15-minute Q&A afterward. "That's good news to all of us because all of us have a little bit of Simon living inside of us. All of us have a little bit of Pharisee inside of us." It's easy to judge the Pharisees for questioning Jesus. But then we become just like them: condemning other sinners. And, when we do that, we're belittling God's grace while forgetting our own sins. Jesus came for the sinners, and that included the Pharisees—and that includes us too. "I do good to someone, knowing they will do good to me. I will lend to someone, knowing that they will pay me back in some way. There's nothing wrong with that. It's just not Christian." Did you know that Christianity is one of the most diverse groups of people in the world? There are believers all across the globe—people with different languages, customs, professions, and traditions. But we all unite in his name. That's been true since the very beginning, when Jesus chose his disciples. Learning to Follow Jesus (https://www.thecrossingchurch.com/podcast-series/how-to-follow-jesus/) . Luke 7:36-50 New International Version (NIV)Jesus Anointed by a Sinful Woman36 When one of the Pharisees invited Jesus to have dinner with him, he went to the Pharisee’s house and reclined at the table. 37 A woman in that town who lived a sinful life learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee’s house, so she came there with an alabaster jar of perfume.38 As she stood behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them.39 When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would know who is touching him and what kind of woman she is—that she is a sinner.”40 Jesus answered him, “Simon, I have something to tell you.”“Tell me, teacher,” he said.41 “Two people owed money to a certain moneylender. One owed him five hundred denarii,[a] and the other fifty. 42 Neither of them had the money to pay him back, so he forgave the debts of both. Now which of them will love him more?”43 Simon replied, “I suppose the one who had the bigger debt forgiven.”“You have judged correctly,” Jesus said.44 Then he turned toward the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You did not give me any water for my feet, but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. 45 You did not give me a kiss, but this woman, from the time I entered, has not stopped kissing my feet. 46 You did not put oil on my head, but she has poured perfume on my feet. 47 Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven—as her great love has shown. But whoever has been forgiven little loves little.”48 Then Jesus said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.”49 The other guests began to say among themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?”50 Jesus said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”

Wow, I love my wife!  Do you want to know how I know that I love my wife?  Let me tell you a quick story.  Topher in 2003Fifteen years ago I had the perfect setting to propose.  A blanket in the park, comfort food, mood music, a bouquet of roses, and a ring hidden inside one of the roses.  While the sappy music about love was playing, I dropped to one knee, grabbed the rose with the ring…. And panicked!  The ring wasn't in the rose!  She saw the look on my face and knew I had botched this one.  I began frantically searching the grass around us looking for that precious symbol of love that had fallen out of the rose!  Eventually, I found it, and even though I'm a blundering idiotsometimes, she said yes!  How do I know I love her?  Is it because I gave her a symbol of love, a ring? Ashley and Topher in 2004Jesus spoke of it this way in Luke 7 about a woman who was a sinner, "Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven--as her great love has shown. But whoever has been forgiven little loves little."The best evidence of my love for my beautiful bride isn't what I give her, but in my response to how much she has forgiven me!  Consider how much you've been forgiven in life and show your love to those who forgive you.  You'll be glad you did. Ashley and Topher in 2017Click the logo below and subscribe to automatically receive these Podcasts every weekday morning on Google Play Music or iTunes.   Message Minutes are sponsored by  Washington Church of Christ and recorded for the public 107.9 The Memories WAMW morning radio program.  They air at approximately 7:35am on Weekday Mornings. To find more of the Message Minutes that have been uploaded to this blog CLICK HERE.  To subscribe to a Message Minute podcast feed on iTunes or other podcast player, copy the following URL into your subscription list.http://feeds.feedburner.com/topherwiles/MessageMinute
