Bible Reading: Luke 12:13-21On the one-hundredth birthday of her town, Evie watched as the mayor unlocked a time capsule on the evening news that had been created and stored a hundred years before. He pulled several papers and mementos out of it and held them up to the camera."Can I make a time capsule for our family?" Evie asked when it was over. "I could put family treasures in it!""Sure," said Mom. "That would be fun."Evie found a box and placed some coins and a dollar bill from her desk drawer inside it. Then she packed in a DVD, a sweatshirt, and a storybook. Next she added an old teddy bear, swimming goggles, a beaded necklace, and a picture she had drawn. "Finding things for this box is fun, and there's still room for more," Evie told her mom. "When people in the future see this stuff, they'll get an idea of what we were like.""I think future family members will find the things you have in there interesting," said Mom. "But if you want to make a statement about our lives, I think you're missing the most important thing of all.""A family photo!" said Evie's little brother, Walden. "So they can see what we look like.""What about a newspaper?" suggested Evie. "That would tell them a lot about the things going on around us.""Or we could write them a letter!" said Walden."Those are all good things to add," said Mom. "But I'm thinking about something that makes life important and worth living, even without any of the other things in the box." "I know!" said Evie after a moment. "A Bible! And maybe a church bulletin too.""And we can tell them about Jesus in the letter we write to them!" said Walden.Mom nodded. "Those are both good ways to show future generations what's really important to us. Any physical items we put in our time capsule will be old and worn by the time our descendants open it. But the hope we have in Jesus, who saved us from sin and gave us eternal life with Him, is treasure that will last forever. Let's add some items to the box that point to the heavenly treasure we value most."–Nance E. Keyes How About You?What do you treasure the most? Money? Clothes? Toys? Good grades? Those are good things God gave you to enjoy, but they don't last forever or bring meaning to your life. The only treasure that lasts is the gift of eternal life with Jesus. Store your treasure in heaven by trusting Him as your Savior and then sharing His love with others. Bible Reading: Matthew 7:7-12Sarah groaned as she hunched over her math textbook. Mom looked up from her computer. "What's wrong, honey?" she asked. "You seem upset.""I have a test tomorrow, and I've got to make a B to stay on the honor roll. I've tried and tried, but I just can't get these problems!" She threw down her pencil in frustration. "Plus, I messed up at practice this afternoon. There's no way Coach will let me start at the game next week. And did I mention that I don't have many friends?" Sarah pressed her face into her hands. "Nothing is going right!""I'm sorry, honey." Mom stood from the kitchen table. "Do you want a snack?""Sure, Mom. Ice cream, maybe? And a soda?"Mom opened the refrigerator. "Have you talked to God about these problems?"Sarah shrugged. "I guess. But it's like He's not even listening."Mom set a glass on the table and unscrewed a bottle of vinegar. She poured vinegar into the glass. Then she cracked a raw egg into a bowl and set it in front of Sarah."Mom!" cried Sarah. "What are you doing?"Mom smiled and took away the dishes. "I'm your mother, and I love you. So I wouldn't actually give you vinegar and a raw egg when you asked for a snack, right?""Right," said Sarah hesitantly."Well, God loves you even more than a parent could. When we ask God for something, we should trust that He will give us what's best. After all, He's already given us the best gift there is--Jesus!" Mom placed a glass of milk and a granola bar on the table. "Now, here's your real snack."Sarah looked at the healthy food. "That's not what I asked for.""No, it's not," said Mom. "But it's good for you. And God gives you good things too."Sarah picked up the granola bar and grinned. "Even if it's not exactly what I wanted?""That's right," said Mom. "He loves to give us good gifts, but sometimes what we ask for isn't what's best for us. But He still gives us good things--like when you didn't have any friends and He brought you Hailey and Mallory, remember? All you have to do is ask."–Jennifer DillardHow About You?What do you worry about? Friends? School? Sports? Family? Our lives can be stressful, and sometimes our worries can feel overwhelming. But we don't have to tackle our problems alone--Jesus tells us to bring them to Him. He promises to help us and give us good things, even though they may not be the things we ask for. Pray about whatever is worrying you today.Today's Key Verse:If you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good gifts to those who ask him. (NLT) (Matthew 7:11)Today's Key Thought:Bring your worries to God
Bible Reading: Colossians 3:16; 1 Thessalonians 2:13"I've tried to get into the habit of reading my Bible every day," Alanna said as she reached for a piece of pizza, "but I never seem to be able to." Several others in the room nodded in agreement. They were having a pizza party for their Bible study group, and their leader was encouraging them to set aside time for daily devotions."Bible reading is a bit like eating," said Mr. McRay. "First you take a bite, then you chew it, then you swallow it, and finally you digest it.""How do you take a bite of the Bible?" asked Chloe."Well, look at this pizza," said Mr. McRay. "It's cut into sections, and the Bible is also divided into sections. You choose one section of pizza, and you can choose one section of the Bible--a book or chapter or even just a verse or two.""So if that's like taking a bite, how do you chew?" asked Marc. "My grandma's always telling me not to bite off more than I can chew!"Mr. McRay laughed. "She says that so you won't choke on your food, but don't worry, you won't choke from reading your Bible. Chewing your bite of Bible just means thinking and praying about the verses you've read.""Okay, but then how do we swallow what we've read?" asked Alanna."Have you ever heard someone say, 'That story is hard to swallow'? That means it's hard to believe. So swallowing means believing God's Word is true.""So we read a little, think about it, and believe it," said Chloe. "Then what?""We digest it, remember? And we just studied that in school," said Marc. "Food is changed into something the blood can take to the rest of the body."Mr. McRay nodded. "When we digest food, its nutrients become part of our bodies. And when we digest what we've read in the Bible, its truth becomes part of our lives. We let it make a difference as we listen to what it teaches us about Jesus and who we are as God's children who have been saved from sin." Mr. McRay picked up a piece of pizza. "I think it would be a good idea to eat four meals a day--breakfast, lunch, dinner, and a slice of your Bible." –Sheri ShawHow About You?Are you getting four meals a day? Just like eating is important for a healthy body, reading God's Word is important for a healthy life. If you find it hard to read the Bible, start with small bites. Try reading just a verse or two and think about what God is saying. Then let it make a difference in your life by believing it and doing what it says. Have a bite of Bible every day!Today's Key Verse:People do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God. (NLT) (Matthew 4:4)Today's Key Thought:Feed on God's Word

Pastor David MorrisonOur culture values strength, perhaps too much and maybe in the wrong way. Our culture's lie is that I can be strong enough on my own. Today, I will share a story that shows where absolute strength is found...that true strength is found by sight.Instructions for reading the Old Testament:1. The Old Testament highlights humanity's need for God, showing that even those who had God's law couldn't succeed by merely following rules - they needed something greater. 2. The Old Testament held significant value for its original audience, those who lived before the time of Jesus. 3. The Old Testament is full of imperfect people and is often descriptive instead of prescriptive. 4. The Old Testament ultimately points to one central hero - Jesus.Judges 13-16 (NLT)- What is a Nazarite? - A Nazarite would be someone who took an even greater vow, beyond the standard expectation, to keep the law of God out of a desire to be set apart and be used by God. - The Nazarite Vow: - Refrain from cutting their hair - Abstain from grapes and alcohol - Never touch a corpse of a human or animal- As a Nazarite, Samson was to be set apart for God's use. As he grows, he gets himself into trouble.- Just because God's Spirit is active doesn't mean God approves of everything that has happened.Ways I Am Like Samson:- I choose my own way, even though I know better.- God still uses me, even when I am imperfect.- I still think I am strong enough on my own.Judges 21:25 (NLT)- Samson reflected the people's attitudes. They did what was right in their own eyes.Jesus has some powerful words about Eyes.- Matthew 5:29 (NLT)- Matthew 6:22-23 (NLT)Where are you looking? What are you looking for?- Samson's story is a cautionary tale about a man with a calling on his life who allows the distractions around him to shift his perspective away from what matters the most. I have been praying an essential prayer for a few years now that I believe is the secret to true strength:- "Lord, give me eyes to see."When I pray this prayer, I am asking:- God help me to see things like You do.- God help me to see into the unseen.- God help me to turn my eyes away from things that would distract or destroy me.Isaiah 50:11 (NLT)- When I live according to my light, I will indeed find darkness. When I strive to be my strength and source, I will fall.In many ways, Samson's story was like Jesus; there was an angelic meeting before his birth, and he was set apart for God's purpose and sent to deliver God's people. The difference is that Samson kept his eye fixed on what he wanted. Jesus was the only one up to the task. Jesus is the only one who can walk the gauntlet of life and not allow His eyes to wander. He went to the cross, and instead of crying out for vengeance as Samson did, He cried out, "Father, forgive them."And He died so that we could live in freedom. And now He says, follow Me.Response:- If the temptations of this world have pulled you away from God's plan for your life, it's time to repent.- Have you been looking at yourself as your source of strength?- Are you willing to be set apart and replace your eyes with His?

Message for 08/11/2024 "Jesus is God" by Justin McTeer *All verses are NLT* Matthew 16:24-28 - Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross, and follow me. 25 If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it. 26 And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul? Is anything worth more than your soul? 27 For the Son of Man will come with his angels in the glory of his Father and will judge all people according to their deeds. 28 And I tell you the truth, some standing here right now will not die before they see the Son of Man coming in his Kingdom.” Matthew 17:1-8 - Six days later Jesus took Peter and the two brothers, James and John, and led them up a high mountain to be alone. 2 As the men watched, Jesus' appearance was transformed so that his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as light.3 Suddenly, Moses and Elijah appeared and began talking with Jesus. 4 Peter exclaimed, “Lord, it's wonderful for us to be here! If you want, I'll make three shelters as memorials—one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” 5 But even as he spoke, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy. Listen to him.” 6 The disciples were terrified and fell face down on the ground. 7 Then Jesus came over and touched them. “Get up,” he said. “Don't be afraid.” 8 And when they looked up, Moses and Elijah were gone, and they saw only Jesus. Revelation 1:13b-15 - He was wearing a long robe with a gold sash across his chest. His head and his hair were white like wool, as white as snow. And his eyes were like flames of fire. 15 His feet were like polished bronze refined in a furnace, and his voice thundered like mighty ocean waves. Exodus 3:13-15 - But Moses protested, “If I go to the people of Israel and tell them, ‘The God of your ancestors has sent me to you,' they will ask me, ‘What is his name?' Then what should I tell them?” 14 God replied to Moses, “I am who i am. Say this to the people of Israel: I am has sent me to you.” 15 God also said to Moses, “Say this to the people of Israel: Yahweh, the God of your ancestors—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob—has sent me to you. This is my eternal name, my name to remember for all generations. John 8:54-58 - Jesus answered, “If I want glory for myself, it doesn't count. But it is my Father who will glorify me. You say, ‘He is our God,' 55 but you don't even know him. I know him. If I said otherwise, I would be as great a liar as you! But I do know him and obey him. 56 Your father Abraham rejoiced as he looked forward to my coming. He saw it and was glad.” 57 The people said, “You aren't even fifty years old. How can you say you have seen Abraham?” 58 Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth, before Abraham was even born, I am!” John 10:25-33 - Jesus replied, “I have already told you, and you don't believe me. The proof is the work I do in my Father's name. 26 But you don't believe me because you are not my sheep. 27 My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. 28 I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one can snatch them away from me, 29 for my Father has given them to me, and he is more powerful than anyone else. No one can snatch them from the Father's hand. 30 The Father and I are one.” 31 Once again the people picked up stones to kill him. 32 Jesus said, “At my Father's direction I have done many good works. For which one are you going to stone me?” 33 They replied, “We're stoning you not for any good work, but for blasphemy! You, a mere man, claim to be God.” Philippians 2:5-8 - You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had. 6 Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. 7 Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, 8 he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal's death on a cross. Titus 2:12-13 - And we are instructed to turn from godless living and sinful pleasures. We should live in this evil world with wisdom, righteousness, and devotion to God, 13 while we look forward with hope to that wonderful day when the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, will be revealed. John 1:1-5 - In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He existed in the beginning with God. 3 God created everything through him, and nothing was created except through him. 4 The Word gave life to everything that was created, and his life brought light to everyone. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it. Colossians 1:15-20 - Christ is the visible image of the invisible God. He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation, 16 for through him God created everything in the heavenly realms and on earth. He made the things we can see and the things we can't see—such as thrones, kingdoms, rulers, and authorities in the unseen world. Everything was created through him and for him. 17 He existed before anything else, and he holds all creation together. 18 Christ is also the head of the church, which is his body. He is the beginning, supreme over all who rise from the dead. So he is first in everything. 19 For God in all his fullness was pleased to live in Christ, 20 and through him God reconciled everything to himself. He made peace with everything in heaven and on earth by means of Christ's blood on the cross. Romans 12:1 - And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him. Romans 12:2 - Don't copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God's will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.
Bible Reading: Matthew 11:28-30"Will all this fit in my backpack?" Autumn wondered as she packed for an overnight camping trip with Uncle Joel and Aunt Carrie. Autumn stuffed her backpack full of clothes, games, books, and flashlights. "I can't forget my camera," she said, slipping it inside. After cramming a few bags of snacks on top, she closed the zipper. An hour later, Uncle Joel and Autumn were climbing the steep trail to the campsite. Aunt Carrie had dropped them off and was driving the rest of the way. She didn't like hiking. Autumn loved hiking! She enjoyed listening to the birds and feeling the warm summer breeze drift around her. But as the trail got steeper, she paid less attention to sights and sounds and began to wonder why she had stuffed her backpack so full. She walked slower and slower and soon fell behind Uncle Joel. The backpack got heavier with each step. Uncle Joel stopped. "Is something wrong?" he asked. "You're slowing down."Autumn sighed. "I'm getting really tired." Uncle Joel took Autumn's backpack off her shoulders. "Is that better?"Autumn drew a deep breath of relief. "Yes. It was getting so heavy!"Uncle Joel nodded. "That reminds me of a Bible verse. In the book of Matthew, Jesus says He will carry our burdens for us. He took our greatest burden of all by dying for our sins, and He can take burdens off your heart just like I took the backpack off your shoulders." Uncle Joel swung Autumn's backpack back and forth. "What do you have in this thing, anyway?"Autumn shrugged. "Oh...just some stuff."Uncle Joel grinned. "You probably didn't need all of it for an overnight camping trip. You know, we often carry around a lot of stuff in our spiritual lives too--stuff we don't need to carry, like worry about the future or guilt for sins we've already asked forgiveness for.""And it gets heavy, like my backpack?" Autumn asked."Right," Uncle Joel said. He lifted the backpack. "You were relieved when this weight was gone. How would you feel if the burdens of your heart were gone?"Autumn looked up. "A lot lighter," she said with a smile.–Katlyn TraxlerHow About You?Are you worried or upset about something? Do you have a heavy backpack full of burdens on your heart? Sometimes we carry around troubles that God never meant for us to carry. Jesus died for you to take away your burden of sin and give you rest, and He wants to take the other things that weigh you down too. Give your burdens to Jesus, and He will carry them for you. If something is really weighing you down, talk to a trusted adult about it too.Today's Key Verse:Jesus said, "Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest." Pastor Dale Benson Matthew 6:1-4 (NLT) - In The Sermon on the Mount, Jesus assumes His audience is giving, praying, and fasting. The issue is not whether we give. Jesus is more interested in how and why we give, pray, and fast. - Do you give to be noticed? Is your giving an act of worship to God, or a way to get recognized for your good deeds? Malachi 3:10 (NLT) - God is not concerned about your money. He is concerned about your soul. Enough about generosity, let's move on to our possessions. - Do you own your possessions, or do your possessions own you? - “Lord you aren't adequately supplying what I think my needs are, so I am going to put my trust in Visa." - Do you worry about food? - It is one thing to trust God with the excess. It is an entirely different thing to trust God when both the cupboards and the bank account are bare. - Do I trust God with the first of what I have, or do I give Him the leftovers? Proverbs 22:7 (NLT) What do the rich and the poor have in common? God is the maker of them both. Proverbs 9:10 (NLT) Matthew 6:31-34 (NLT)

In this episode, I share my ongoing grief journey and the valuable lessons I've learned along the way. Grief is a deeply personal process, and everyone experiences it differently. Here are some key insights from my journey:Individual Grieving Processes: Everyone grieves differently, with unique feelings, timelines, comforts, and ways to heal.Embracing Grief: It's essential to acknowledge and process your grief in ways that work for you. Don't ignore your pain; let the tears come and allow yourself to heal.Unexpected Grief Waves: Grief can hit you when you least expect it, like waves crashing over you. Allow yourself to feel the pain.Unexpected Sources of Grief: You might find yourself grieving things you never anticipated. Recently, I've grieved my old backyard, my Wimberley home, my church, and more.Grief is a process with its own unique timeline for each person. I was determined to grieve well, accepting the deep pain. If you love deeply, you will grieve deeply; it is a blessing to grieve. There's beauty in moving from counting the days of grief to counting the days of blessings you had with your loved one.Daily thankfulness is crucial for making it through each day. Remember, you can't fix someone else's grief, and they can't fix yours. Instead, listen and witness others' grief. As a certified Grief Educator through David Kessler's courses and mentoring, I felt compelled to help others. Grief is overwhelming, and often we don't know what to do or say. I discovered that creativity was a significant part of my healing process. It wasn't until two years after Wayman died that I recognized the seven main creative processes I used to cope with my pain. Here are some Bible verses that have been particularly comforting to me:"Those who plant in tears will harvest with shouts of joy. They weep as they go to plant their seed, but they sing as they return with the harvest." (Psalms 126:5-6 NLT) Psalms 126:5-6"God blesses those who mourn, for they will be comforted." (Matthew 5:4 NLT) Matthew 5:4"Weeping may last through the night, but joy comes in the morning." (Psalm 30:5)Additionally, I recommend two books that have helped me reflect on grief and find new meaning:"Reflecting on Grief and Moving Beyond Pain: Living with Loss and Discovering New Meaning""Companion Reflection Journal: Reflecting on Grief and Moving Beyond Pain"I have been dreaming and knowing that I had an assignment to write and release a digital course on healing through the creative process. Grief is a process, unique to each individual, and we must process it to heal. I am excited to announce a new digital course on tools to help you heal from grief and trauma. The course, titled "Healing Your Heart through Creativity: Painting Module 1," will be available for presale on July 17 at 12 noon Central Time for $27 (regular price $47). A bonus session will be held on July 18 at 12 noon Central Time. Sign up here.Thank you for joining me on this journey. I hope these insights and resources bring you comfort and help you navigate your own grief process.
Pastor Dale Benson Matthew 5:7 (NLT) - This is not a verse about Karma. This is not a sort of "what goes around comes around." "The Universe always pays you back." These sentiments are not what this verse is articulating. - This verse is a pithy saying that points to a much larger teaching by Jesus. Matthew 18:21-35 (NLT) Matthew 6:14 (NLT) - God's mercy to us is undeserved. We do not show mercy to others because they deserve it. If they deserved it, it would not be mercy. You have been shown great mercy. God has made forgiveness available to you for everything you have ever done. I am afraid that at times we have taken some verses in the Bible and made them the be-all/end-all of a short, easy way to have all your sins forgiven and receive salvation. These verses do seem to say that God expects something out of us. For mercy and forgiveness from Him, He expects us to show mercy and forgiveness to others. I am not saying this is easy, I am saying it is expected. I am telling you that the One who has died for all your sins is asking you, in return, to demonstrate your understanding of the mercy that has been extended to you by extending that mercy to others. Matthew 5:8 (NLT) - There is a difference between purity of filth and purity of heart. - This is not talking about a clean, white heart that has not been stained by anything. Purity of heart in this context is talking about a heart that is wholly set on God. Purity of Heart is to will one thing. - Soren Kierkegaard Romans 12:1-2 (NLT) - Transformation can happen in an instant. It can happen over time. In this Romans passage is a "renewal." Not like renewing your membership at The YMCA or renewing your Netflix subscription. It is more like a cleansing or purifying type of transformation. CALL TO THE ALTAR - To Begin the process of forgiveness and showing mercy. - Who do you need to show mercy? Begin by committing to show that mercy to them. - To pursue a pure heart... To seek God first with everything in you. - Commit to non-conformation to this world - Commit to Transformation through the renewing of your mind.
Bible Reading: Psalm 1:1-6"We did a fun thing in science today," Haneul told his mom as he packed his suitcase for a weekend with his grandparents. "We had to get into groups and decide which items we would include in our survival kit if we were taking a trip to the moon. Our teacher gave us a list of twenty things, and we had to choose eight of them for our kit.""Did everyone agree on the same items?" asked Mom. Haneul shook his head. "One boy in my group kept insisting that we take a compass. What good would that do on the moon? It doesn't have a magnetic field like Earth does. And chocolate wasn't even on the list! How could anyone survive without chocolate?"Mom laughed. "You and your chocolate." "There were a lot of foods we couldn't take, so I thought we should take vitamins," Haneul continued. "Otherwise we might not get all the stuff we need to stay healthy." He added a couple of things to his suitcase and closed it. "There! I'm done.""Did you pack pajamas?" asked Mom."Of course!" Haneul answered."Toothbrush?" Mom wanted to know."Yep," said Haneul. "Don't forget, Mom--I worked on a survival kit at school today. I'm a pro at packing now!""What about daily nutrition?" Mom asked.Haneul laughed. "I don't need to take any food with me--or vitamins. Grandma will make sure I eat well!""I was actually referring to a different kind of nutrition," Mom told him. "You need spiritual food wherever you are, and the Bible is a place to get that. The Holy Spirit uses it to nourish our hearts and remind us of Jesus's love, grace, and promises."Haneul looked at the Bible on his bedside table. "Okay. I'll take it." He picked it up, opened his suitcase, and made room for it. "But even if I didn't take it along, I'm sure Grandpa and Grandma would make sure I got spiritual food. They go to church and talk about Jesus a lot.""Yes, but it's good to read the Bible for yourself too." Mom smiled. "It probably wasn't on your list at school, but it would also be a good thing to have on the moon!" –Nance E. KeyesHow About You?Would you include a Bible in a survival kit for the moon? Is it a regular part of your life now? It's easy to remember the food our physical bodies need, but you need spiritual food too. Feed your mind with spiritual truth by reading the Bible and learning about what it says at church. Then trust God to use it to nourish you spiritually and help you apply what it says to your life.Today's Key Verse:People do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God. (NLT) (Matthew 4:4)Today's Key Thought:Be nourished by God Word
Love your neighbor as yourself (NLT) Matthew 22: 39
Bible Reading: Matthew 13:1-11, 18-23"I can't sleep in my room!" cried four-year-old Jonah as he climbed into bed with his brother Jacob. "The mean bear will eat me!""That was just a story," Jacob tried to explain. "I made that up."Jonah got under the covers and snuggled up to Jacob. "I'm scared."Dad walked into Jacob's bedroom and sat down on the bed next to the two boys. "Jacob, did you tell your brother another one of your wild tales?"Jacob nodded and grinned. "It was one of my best stories. There's this five-headed snake who teams up with this bear who has a head like a wild boar with footlong fangs and claws in the shape of knives. They go around looking for kids to eat, but my superhero is bigger than both of them. He can fly, and he has these spears for arms and--""You have a fantastic imagination," Dad interrupted with a smile. "Stories are important. They can teach us about life. But I think your story taught your brother to be afraid." Jonah crawled into Dad's lap."I love making up stories," said Jacob. "I've even been writing them down.""That's wonderful, Jacob. Storytelling is a gift God has given you. Still, you should consider your audience next time.""I will." Jacob looked at his brother. "Sorry for scaring you, Jonah." Dad put his hand on Jacob's shoulder. "Did you know that Jesus was a storyteller too?""Really?""Jesus told stories, or parables, like you do. His stories taught truth about God and His kingdom to the disciples and other people who came to hear Jesus teach. Jesus told stories about things that the people in His day were familiar with, like sheep, farming, weddings, and fig trees. His stories helped them--and us today--understand the truth about Jesus and the kingdom we become part of when we trust Him to save us from sin."Jacob looked at Jonah. His little brother held his favorite blue car close to his chest. "I could make up a story about a magic blue car for Jonah. He'd like that!""He sure would," Dad said as he carried a sleepy Jonah back to his bed. –Bonnie CarrHow About You?Did you know that one way Jesus explained God's truth to people was through storytelling? In fact, everything written in the Bible is God's truth--it contains the parables Jesus told that show us what God's kingdom is like, and it has many other stories about what God has done throughout history and how He has worked in people's lives. As we read and listen to God's Word, He will use it to teach us the truth He wants us to know.Today's Key Verse:I will speak to you in parables. I will explain things hidden since the creation of the world. (NLT) (Matthew 13:35)Today's Key Thought:Listen to the stories Jesus tells
Bible Reading: Matthew 6:25-34Lily worried about everything. One day at recess, she was so worried that she sat on a swing, tears trickling down her cheeks. Her friend Anna sat beside her. "Why are you crying?""I'm worried.""About what?"Lily wiped away her tears. "Everything. I'm worried about our spelling quiz and about my dentist appointment tomorrow…and I'm worried I'll never stop worrying!"After a pause, Anna said, "Do you want to go to church with me tonight?""Tonight?" Lily frowned. She'd never been to church. "I thought church was on Sundays.""We have kids' church on Wednesdays. Ask your parents. It would be fun!"Lily wasn't sure how church would help with her worrying. So far, Anna's invitation had only made her more worried. But Anna was a good friend, so Lily figured she might as well ask.Her parents said yes, so Lily went to church with Anna. When Lily noticed that the other kids already knew each other, worry filled her again. But soon, fun replaced the worry. They sang songs and played games. Then the children's pastor--Pastor Casey--talked to them about a man named Jesus. And about worry. "When Jesus taught about worry, he talked about the birds. Do the birds worry about what they eat or what they're going to wear?""No," said all the kids except Lily. She was too busy thinking."But God created them, and He takes care of them. Do you think you matter more than the birds?""Yes!""So, do we need to worry about what is going to happen? Or can we trust God to care for us?""We can trust God." Lily was surprised to hear her own voice."Jesus wants us to come to Him," Pastor Casey said. "He promises to give us rest."Lily wondered what it would be like to experience rest. She wanted to learn more about Jesus. After Pastor Casey finished speaking, Lily knew what to do."I want to talk to Pastor Casey," she told Anna. "Will you come with me?"Anna beamed. "Of course." – Becca WierwilleHow About You?Have you ever felt like your mind was stuffed full with worries? Each day gives us plenty to worry about, but Jesus teaches us that worry won't change a thing--instead, we can trust God to care for us. We can hand our worries to Jesus, who loves us so much He died for us, and He promises to give us rest. What worries can you turn over to Jesus today? Let Him carry your worries for you, and if you still feel burdened by worry, tell an adult so they can help.Today's Key Verse:Jesus said, "Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest." (NLT) ( Matthew 11:28 )Today's Key Thought:Trade worry for rest

Welcome to The Thoughtful Spot - the podcast for women, wherever they are on their Christian journey, who are thoughtfully seeking God's transforming power, who are striving to live as Christ wants them to everyday, and who want other Christian women to walk with them through life. I'm your host Terri Hester. Today, on the third episode of this special Advent series, I'm going to talk about Mary and Joseph and their courageous willingness to trust God with their new story. Scripture Reference:Luke 1:26-38 (NLT)Matthew 1:18-24 (NLT)Questions to PonderWhy do you think Gabriel told Mary about Elizabeth? Before Gabriel explained why he had come, he told Mary that she had found favor with God. Why do you think that was important? When God calls you to do something, do you think of yourself as favored (or loved)? Why or why not?Would believing that you are loved by God make a difference in how you respond to God's call?God called Joseph to take a courageous step of faith. Why might this have been difficult for Joseph? What might have happened if he had responded differently?Have you ever struggled with doing what you believe God wants vs. what tradition or society says you should do?Have you ever felt the Holy Spirit guiding you toward the right choice? Explain.Sometimes God asks us to take on a big responsibility. If God has asked you to do so, were you also able to see it as a privilege? Keep watch and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation. (NLT) Matthew 26 : 41
DeconstructionWeek 2 - Did God Really Say…?The Bible is one of the first things people begin to doubt in the process of deconstruction. Did God really say…? Are certain parts of the Bible more true than others? Is it a God-breathed, God-inspired story or humanity's best attempt at explaining God? Some even ask what Jesus thought or said about the Bible. In week 2, Chase Gardner helps tackle these questions and more.—Message NotesWhat does Jesus say about the Bible? Can we believe the Bible and base our lives on it? Orthodox View: The authors received more and more truths over time.Progressive View: What the authors wrote got truer and truer over time. What does Jesus say about the Bible?Luke 4:3-4 (NLT)Luke 4:5-8 (NLT)Luke 4:9-12 (NLT)Jesus used Scripture to counter Satan.Jesus thought the words of the Old Testament were vital, authoritative and coherent.A lot of what the Bible says is descriptive not prescriptive. (It describes how people lived, not necessarily saying we need to live that way ourselves.)Often, people use the Bible out of context to prove their points or justify their actions.Matthew 24:17 (KJV)“I must recognize that we essentially have human rights in our world because of Christianity. It is quite clear in this Christian reevaluation of the human person that the philosophy of human rights, of which we subscribe to today, would have never established itself.” - Luke Ferry (atheist author)If you want to root yourself in the teachings and traditions of Jesus, you should have a high view of the Bible as well.Jesus points out that the Bible is the inspired Word of God.Matthew 22:41-46 (NLT)The writers of the Bible are like the instruments of revelation.2 Peter 1:20-21 (NLT)2 Timothy 3:16a (NLT)Jesus did not come to end the laws of the Old Testament. He came to fulfill them.Matthew 5:17-19 (NLT)Jesus is saying that the entire Bible is purposeful. Jesus taught the Bible we have today is canon, actual books inspired by God.Luke 24:44 (NLT)Jesus considered His own words as Scripture:Matthew 7:24-27 (NLT)John 15:14 (NLT)John 12:49 (NLT)Matthew 28 (NLT)Jesus' apostles and followers considered the New Testament as Scripture.2 Peter 3:15-16 (NLT)If the vital, authoritative, coherent, inspired, purposeful and countercultural canon of Scripture says it, Jesus tells us to believe it and obey it for God's glory and our good.—Helpful LinksFor more series resources, visit https://gethope.net/deconstruction/#moreIf you'd like to receive regular updates on what's happening around Hope, subscribe to our newsletter here: https://gethope.net/enews/Subscribe to Family Conversations for weekly prompts and resources: https://touchpoint.gethope.net/OnePageReg/2451If you're new to Hope or looking to get connected, click here: https://gethope.net/next/To support this ministry financially to help us continue to love people where they are and encourage them to grow in their relationship with Jesus Christ, click here: https://gethope.net/give/Subscribe to our channel: https://bit.ly/2XBbBxqStay Connected with Hope:Website: https://gethope.net/Hope Community Church Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/gethopecommunitychurchHope Community Church Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/get_hope/Hope Community Church Twitter: https://twitter.com/get_hopeHope Community Church YouTube: https://youtube.com/c/HopeCommunityChurchSubscribe to Our PodcastHope In Real Life YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@HopeInRealLifeHope In Real Life Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/7eifzI0r9uY8rUaBMGs7q1Hope In Real Life Apple Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/hope-in-real-life-with-jason-gore/id1691710678?uo=4
The Sermon on The Mount is perhaps Jesus' best known teaching and yet many have questioned the sermon's relevancy and practicality. After all, what does a 2,000 year old sermon have to teach us today? Understanding the Sermon on the Mount... Leviticus 18:1-4 (NLT)Psalm 106:34-36 (NLT)2 Kings 17:7-8 (NLT)Matthew 4:17 (NLT) What do people who have come under the complete gracious authority of God look like??? They look Different! How often do we actually talk to friends and neighbors about Jesus? If we have this eternal hope, why do we keep it to ourselves? In the final week of our series, Lead Pastor Jason Gore urges us to share willingly about the hope we have in Jesus.#sharewillingly #kingandakingdom #allin--Message Notes:What does it mean to willingly share the hope that we have in Jesus? What would you do if it depended on you? The Bible tells us to prepare for spiritual battle. Ephesians 6:11-12 (NLT) Take notice. Take a side. How do we live out God's Kingdom? Live Obediently. He will not crush the weakest reed or put out a flickering candle. (NLT) Matthew 12:20
How do you define greatness? So often we value the impressive over the impactful, but that's not what made Jesus the G.O.A.T. In week 3 of the King & A Kingdom series, Ayren Nelson shares a radical perspective on greatness that makes us rethink what it means to serve and be served.#serve #kingandakingdom--Message Notes:What does it mean to be a true servant? In our culture, we often value the impressive over the impactful. Jesus invites us all into a Kingdom where anyone and everyone can be great, but the paradigm is different than what we might imagine. Matthew 20:20-21 (NLT) Matthew 20:22b (NLT) Matthew 20:18-19a (NLT) Jesus' invitation to follow Him is an invitation to join Him in suffering for the sake of others.James and John as well as the other disciples want to be part of the imagined glory of the new Kingdom, never understanding the suffering it involves. Bible Reading: Mark 6:30-32; Luke 10:38-42"I hear you're having a pizza party at youth group tomorrow evening," Dad told Eliana as they waited for their food at a restaurant. "That sounds fun.""Yeah, but I can't go to youth group tomorrow. I have play rehearsal at school.""Last week you missed youth group because you had a band concert," said Dad. "Are you going to the retreat next weekend?""I can't. I have to work on the student council posters on Saturday." Dad frowned. "Maybe you should cut down on--" "What's wrong with that man over there?" asked Eliana.Dad looked to where she was pointing, then jumped up and dashed across the room. "Are you choking, sir?" he asked. The man nodded frantically. Dad wrapped his arms around the man and, with a clenched fist, gave a couple of sharp, upward thrusts. The man coughed and gasped, and a moment later was breathing normally again. Everyone applauded."Thank you," said the man when he was able to talk. "I guess I tried to eat too much at once!"On the way home, Eliana said, "It's a good thing you knew how to do the Heimlich maneuver, Dad! That man could have choked to death."Dad nodded. "I'm glad I learned the Heimlich maneuver a long time ago so I'd know what to do if someone was choking." He sighed. "You know, Eliana, you may be in need of the Heimlich maneuver too, and I just didn't notice until now.""Me?" said Eliana. "What do you mean? I'm not choking!""No?" asked Dad. "It seems like your spiritual life is getting choked by all the extracurricular activities you're involved in. You need room to breathe. You haven't been able to participate in church activities because of your busy schedule, and you also need down time so you can rest and renew your energy.""I have been feeling overloaded lately," Eliana admitted. "And I haven't had much time to pray or read my Bible.""Having that time with Jesus is important," said Dad. "We can rest in Him because He did everything needed to save us, and when we spend time with Him, He reminds us of that. He provides rest for our souls." Eliana nodded. "Maybe when we get home we can go over my activities to see which ones I can quit." - Barbara J. WestbergHow About You?Does your life feel crowded with too many activities? Money Talks! What is it saying? Some of us tune out what our money is saying. But money has a way of getting louder than we can ignore! Let's listen to what our money is saying about worry, budget, debt, generosity, and learn what God is saying about it. Let's take control over our money and adjust what our money is saying. We need to become money masters instead of being mastered by money. Bible Reading: Matthew 6:19-21, 33Miles dreamed about the hoverboard he was saving up for as he raked leaves in his grandmother's yard. His dad had agreed to pay him for his help since Grandma couldn't rake them herself, and Miles was brainstorming more ways to earn some extra money. Maybe some of his neighbors would pay him to rake their leaves.Just then, he noticed a large hole in the base of a big tree. "Look, Dad!" he called as he knelt to peer inside. "I never noticed this before. This would be a good place to hide stuff."Dad walked over to look. "Maybe there's a cache of jewels or a sack of stolen money inside," he teased. He poked his rake into the hole, and they heard a scraping sound as the rake hit a metal object."Something is hidden in there!" exclaimed Miles. Plunging his hand inside the cavity, he felt around and finally pulled out a small box. "Wow! A real treasure chest! I wonder who put it there." Miles eagerly opened the old box and looked inside. He felt a pang of disappointment when the treasure turned out to be a soggy pair of shoelaces, a rusty pocketknife, and a moldy book about fishing."Somebody must have hidden these things and then forgot about them," said Dad. "Now look at them. I hope whoever stored these here put most of their treasures in a better place.""Yeah. Somewhere they won't get ruined, like in a closet or one of those safe deposit boxes at the bank.""I was thinking of an even better place than that," said Dad. "Jesus said we should store our treasures in heaven, where they'll never be ruined or stolen." Dad shook his head. "We often put so much emphasis on material things like houses and clothes and cars…"And hoverboards, thought Miles. "We need to remember those things won't last," said Dad. "The only treasure that lasts is found in Jesus--being saved from sin and having a relationship with Him for all eternity." Miles nodded as he looked at the rusty pocketknife. I still want a hoverboard, he thought. But I'm glad I already have what really matters--treasure in heaven. He put the box back into the hole in the tree and picked up his rake. -Ellen C. Orr How About You?Is there something you really want? Maybe it's something your friends have or something you saw on TV. It's okay to enjoy things like that, but remember that treasures on earth don't last--anything you buy will eventually get old or wear out. The only treasure that lasts forever is free--eternal life with Jesus. When the focus of your life is on Him instead of material things, you are storing treasure in heaven, where it will last forever. Today's Key Verse:Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. (NLT) (Matthew 6:20 )Today's Key Thought:Store treasures in heaven

Anger is a normal human emotion, but the way we handle it has a huge impact on our relationships with other people and with God. If we give full vent to it, we usually end up hurting the people around us; if we suppress it or ignore it we tend to get bitter and hardened. While it isn't wrong to feel angry, God can give us the power to handle this emotion in a spiritual and helpful way. Listen to this Scripture Playlist for when you feel angry. Bible Reading: Matthew 5:15-16On a sunny summer afternoon, Kayla and her parents decided to take a walk through the woods. When they first moved to the farm, Dad had cleared a path that looped through the woods at the back of their property.Kayla loved walking in the woods with her parents. She would often just stand still and take in the sounds and smells of the forest. It was always so peaceful and beautiful. As she rounded a curve in the path, something caught Kayla's eye. "Mom, Dad, come look at this!" she called.Mom and Dad walked over to where Kayla was standing. On the ground, nestled between a bunch of leaves and sticks, was a bright purple flower."Wow, that flower was hidden well," Dad said.Mom nodded. "If you hadn't been standing right there, we would have missed it.""It's too pretty to just leave hidden out here. Can I pick it and take it home?" Kayla asked.Mom checked her phone to make sure it was okay to pick, and then Kayla carefully picked the flower and held on to it as they continued on around the path. Once they reached the house, Kayla grabbed a vase from under the kitchen sink, filled it with water, and placed the flower in it. She set the vase on the table so they all could enjoy it."It's so beautiful!" Kayla exclaimed.During devotions that evening, Dad read some verses from the book of Matthew. "You know, that flower you found in the woods today is a good example of this Bible lesson," he said when he finished reading. "The flower was just so bright and beautiful that you couldn't leave it hidden in the woods. You wanted everyone to see it. Well, this verse is saying that's what we're like as Christians. We have the light of Jesus in us, and we shouldn't try to hide it. We need to shine bright like that flower so that others can see the beauty of His love in our lives."That night when Kayla went to bed, she prayed that the Lord would help her be a shining light for Him. She wanted others to see Jesus in her life. -Lisa FullerHow About You?Does your life reflect the light of Jesus? Can others see Him when they look at you? Bible Reading: Ephesians 1:3; Hebrews 4:13-16"Happy third birthday, Jake," Elizabeth said, handing her younger brother his present. It was beautifully wrapped up in superhero paper. "Hope you like it."They were having a party outside in the garden for him with some families from church. Jake glanced up before giving a loud shriek and yelling. He left the package on the table and ran inside. Dad followed him."What have I done? Why doesn't he want my gift?" Elizabeth asked, blushing. "I saved up my pocket money to buy him something special. Now he's crying and run off!""Darling, you haven't done anything," Mom said. "He's tired. You know he doesn't like change. It's all been too much for him having so many people around. It's not your fault."Elizabeth couldn't concentrate on the conversations around her. Her thoughts rattled with the memory of Jake and his outburst. Why did I even bother? she thought crossly, taking the unopened gift and throwing it on a chair. Soon Dad calmed Jake down and brought him outside again. Elizabeth struggled to taste the party food she usually loved and was glad when all the visitors had left. Dad took Jake upstairs to get ready for his bedtime story and prayers. "Are you okay, sweetheart?" Mom asked, picking up the unopened gift. "Dad and I are both proud of you and your efforts to make this a special day for your brother.""I'm disappointed, I guess." Elizabeth sighed. "I know feeling overwhelmed is part of Jake's condition, but I wish he'd opened my gift. I was so excited about it.""I know, sweetheart. Your brother is tired, but tomorrow he'll be refreshed and still have your present to look forward to. I'm sure he'll treasure it." Mom gave her a hug. "Life can feel overwhelming for all of us sometimes, but like Jake, we still have wonderful gifts from God that we can enjoy. He fills our lives with blessings, and no matter what we're going through, we can always enjoy the greatest gift of all--the love and presence of Jesus, who understands how we feel and promises to help us through our struggles."Elizabeth smiled as she thought about the gift from God she could enjoy every day--a relationship with His Son, Jesus.-Cindy LeeHow About You?Do you ever feel overwhelmed by what's going on in your life? The Bible tells us over and over again that God is a loving father. We may have our own ideas about what a father is like based on our relationships with our human dads, but God is the perfect parent. He is the one our hearts ultimately long for. *Holy Spirit (again a part of the Trinity) was there in the beginning and participated in creation… He was present throughout the Old Testament Genesis 1:2 “The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.” Job 26:13 “By His Spirit He adorned the heavens; His hand pierced the fleeing serpent.” Isaiah 32:15 “Until the Spirit is poured upon us from on high, and the wilderness becomes a fruitful field, and the fruitful field is counted as a forest.” Even though Holy Spirit was there in the old testament… He was made available to everyone after the new Covenant was made by the blood of Jesus. (In the New Testament) We hear mention of this in Matthew 3:11 from John the Baptizer… Matthew 3:11 John says “I baptize with water those who repent of their sins and turn to God. But someone is coming soon who is greater than I am —so much greater that I'm not worthy even to be his slave and carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.” -NLT Matthew 3: 13-17 then says “Then Jesus went from Galilee to the Jordan River to be baptized by John. But John tried to talk him out of it. “I am the one who needs to be baptized by you,” he said, “so why are you coming to me?” But Jesus said, “It should be done, for we must carry out all that God requires.” So John agreed to baptize him. After his baptism, as Jesus came up out of the water, the heavens were opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and settling on him. And a voice from heaven said, “This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy.” *After Holy Spirit descends on Jesus at His baptism and then leads Him into the wilderness (Matthew 4:1) - The Lesson - Sometimes you must let Holy Spirit lead you into trials before God takes you further into your purpose. *Holy Spirit empowers us to speak boldly, giving us words, wisdom, and discernment. Examples… Romans 8:26-27 “And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don't know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groaning that cannot be expressed in words. And the Father who knows all hearts knows what the Spirit is saying, for the Spirit pleads for us believers in harmony with God's own will. And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for Him.” *Holy Spirit speaks to us in dreams and visions and whispers. (Some call it conscience) I mentioned Acts in last week's episode but it was the major marker of the New Testament to the New Covenant; So I wanted to end on the Holy Spirit here today: Acts 2:17 says “In the Last Days,” Gods says, “I will pour out my Spirit on every kind of people: Your sons will prophesy, also your daughters; Your young men will see visions, your old men dream dreams. When the time comes, I'll pour out my Spirit on those who serve me, men and women both, and they'll prophesy.” I believe we are in those, days, sweet friends. And I wanted to encourage you in that! How exciting that God promises this outpouring. The dreams and visions. Prophesying. I love reading about it and living it. I've been so excited to share this subject And I hope in the episodes to come, we can dive deeper in.. --- Would you take a minute to fill out this podcast listener survey so I can learn more about you?! As we continue our series on building a church that changes the world, we have to decide whether we want a biblical or a traditional church. Bible Reading: Matthew 4:1-11; 2 Timothy 3:14-17"Sky, come look at this video!" "Mom, you're squealing," Sky said as she walked into the kitchen. "Is it another kitten video?" "No, it's an animal I've never heard of before--a quokka." Sky watched the video of the adorable furry marsupial and giggled. "It looks like a cross between a bear, a mouse, and a wallaby, but it's the size of a cat!"After the video, Mom and Sky looked up facts on the quokka. "They only live in Australia," Mom said. "And they can survive off the fat stored up in their tails for up to a month without food and water!" Mom's cell phone rang and she paused to answer it. Sky noticed her Mom sounded upset during the conversation. "Who was that?" Sky asked when Mom hung up. "Our car will cost a lot more to fix than they were originally thinking. Between this and the situation I had to deal with last week…" Mom grabbed a rag and started tackling the dishes as she muttered to herself."Mom? I was just wondering--have you tapped into your power today?" Mom paused her ferocious scrubbing. "What do you mean?" "Have you read your Bible or prayed today? Whenever I'm having a tough time, you remind me to lean on God's power…and some of the best ways to do that are to talk to God and read His Word." Mom set the rag down and smiled. "You're absolutely right, Sky. Thanks for reminding me. I allowed so many things to distract me today that I haven't taken the time to be with Jesus. When I take time to listen to His voice, He puts everything into perspective--even the hard things." "If you think about it, Mom, our lives as followers of Jesus can be kind of like the quokkas. They rely on the fat stored in their tails to give them sustenance, and we can rely on God's Word stored in our hearts." Mom nodded. "As we read and remember the truth of the Bible, Jesus feeds us spiritually us and reminds us that we can trust Him. This mom is going to fatten herself up with the truth of God's Word!" Sky shook her head. "Okay, now you're just being weird." -Savannah ColemanHow About You?Where do you go for your power source?
