Wisdom is the final frontier in gaining true knowledge. We are on a daily trek to create a legacy of wisdom, seek out discernment and insights, and boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Hello, my friend; this is Gramps. Thanks for coming along on today's trek as we increase Wisdom and Create a Living Legacy. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs%2016%3A16&version=NLT (Proverbs 16:16) How much better to get wisdom than gold, and sound judgment than silver!  We are on Day 1698 of our Trek, and it's time to explore another nugget of wisdom, which includes an inspirational quote along with some wise words from Gramps for today's trek. If you apply the words you hear today, over time, it will help you become more healthy, wealthy, and wise as you continue your daily trek of life. So let's jump right in with today's nugget: Today's quote is from Croft M. Pentz, and it is: A good example can overcome a lot of bad advice. A Good Example Most people love to advise on many topics as if they were experts on those topics. A person may be an expert, but the experts usually show by example, not by proclamation.  It is like either a single person or a young couple without children giving parenting advice. I am sure you have either experienced or heard of this. Hopefully, you are not the one giving the advice. I would rather receive parenting advice from a person with multiple children, and by example, it is evident that they have raised them to be successful adults. The same goes for people who advise you on financial matters, business success, dating, marriage, living a healthy lifestyle, or many other topics.  You need to seek after those individuals who are showing by example a mastery of that topic and proven success.  If you surround yourself with those types of people, you will be well on your way to success. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Hebrews%2013%3A7&version=NLT (Hebrews 13:7) Remember your leaders who taught you the word of God. Think of all the good that has come from their lives, and follow the example of their faith.  As you ponder this nugget of wisdom for yourself, please encourage your friends and family to join us and then come along tomorrow for another day of ‘Wisdom-Trek, Creating a Legacy.' An Accepting Friend Throughout our lives, we have very few close friends. Your true friends are the ones who understand you and don't hold your past against you. Instead, they will hope with you and help you achieve your dreams for the future.  Most importantly, a good friend will accept you just the way you are and help you become all that God intended you to be. We have such few close friends during our lifetime because it requires an investment of time, genuine concern, and love to maintain the bonds of friendship. In my observation, it appears that women desire a greater need for multiple close friends, while my men are pleased with one or two. On a personal level, having Paula as my primary close friend is sufficient for me. Due, in part, to the schedule we maintain with work, exercise, Bible study time, and investing in our kids and grandkids, it is undoubtedly a fulfilling life for me. The key is to be a good friend to others and a close friend to those you love most. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs%2012%3A26&version=NLT (Proverbs 12:26) The godly give good advice to their friends; the wicked lead them astray. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1%20John%204%3A7&version=NLT (1 John 4:7) Dear friends, let us continue to love one another, for love comes from God. A Character of Integrity I believe we all have the propensity to lie or to cover up our faults and inadequacies. We desire to make ourselves look better in front of others. While I certainly understand that desire and tendency, this type of behavior shows a weakness of integrity. Covering up a fault will only make us look even worse when the truth is discovered. It is much better to admit and confess when we have erred. We may have to suffer the embarrassment and possible ridicule now, but that is much less than what we will have to suffer if we engage in covering up, and then it is exposed. A person with character traits that include being honest with themselves will show to others that we have a character of integrity. Don't let the temptation to look good in the short term cost us our life of strong integrity long term.  We all have faults; that is part of being a human. To attempt a cover-up of those faults is shortsighted, foolish, and will result in the fault being committed twice. It is just not worth it. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs%2010%3A9&version=NLT (Proverbs 10:9) People with integrity walk safely, but those who follow crooked paths will be exposed. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs%2011%3A20&version=NLT (Proverbs 11:20) The Lord detests people with crooked hearts, but he delights in those with integrity. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs%2020%3A7&version=NLT (Proverbs 20:7) The godly walk with integrity; blessed are their children who follow them. Desired Dreams If money and time were not a restriction, what would your dreams be? Would you pay off debt, buy things, upgrade your home, buy a new home, start a business, or invest in the lives of others? None of these are mutually exclusive and could all be part of your dream. The fact is, you can do all of the items on this list with what you have available today. We should not wait for ideal conditions because that will never happen. Create a list of your dreams. Prioritize them to what is practical and feasible for now, or in the short term. Expand your plan to include what steps you need to put in place to achieve your objectives that are not attainable short term. Choose what you are willing to sacrifice now so that you can achieve what you desire the most. Don't get this list confused. You must sacrifice what you desire now for what you desire most.  Otherwise, your long-term, more significant goals will never happen. Yes, you should dream and dream big, but you also have to be willing to wait, persevere, and work hard for those big dreams. You will not be able to accomplish all your dreams overnight, it will take a lifetime of passion, but it will happen with proper discipline and restraint.  As with most facets of our lives, it can be narrowed down to the principle of planting and harvesting. Plant well, care for your crops during the growing season, and you will harvest well. The same applies to your dreams. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=James%205%3A7&version=NLT (James 5:7) Dear brothers and sisters, be patient as you wait for the Lord's return. Consider the farmers who patiently wait for the rains in the fall and in the spring. They eagerly look for the valuable harvest to ripen. We are on Day 1647 of our Trek, and it's time to explore another nugget of wisdom, which includes an inspirational quote along with some wise words from Gramps for today's trek. If you apply the words you hear today, over time, it will help you become more healthy, wealthy, and wise as you continue your daily trek of life. So let's jump right in with today's nugget: Today's quote is from Austin Sorensen, and it is: A child is not likely to find a father in God unless he finds something of God in his father. Finding God In You Godly parenting is not easy, but it is essential. How a child views life, their role in the world, and their concept of God often comes from how effective we are as parents. I realize that each child has their own will and is ultimately responsible for the decisions and choices they make in life, but that does not absolve us as parents and grandparents, to set them on the right path, and point them in the right direction. There is a verse in Proverbs that shares some good advice for us. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs%2022%3A6&version=NLT (Proverbs 22:6) - Direct your children onto the right path, and when they are older, they will not leave it. This verse is not a guarantee that your children will not deviate, but it certainly provides them with a path to which they can return based on your divine direction. If you are a father or grandfather (or hope to be at some point), your responsibility is even greater. Since God's Word refers to God as our heavenly father, our children's perception of God will largely be determined by how they view you as a father. Your children are not likely to find a father in God unless they see God-like qualities in you as their father. I urge you as parents, and especially fathers, to live a good and godly life before your children at all times. It will have a significant impact on their lives throughout eternity. The most powerful way to build God's kingdom on earth is through your family, especially your children. When they see and follow your example of a godly life based on the precepts found in God's Word, they are likely to pass that example onto their children. These practices can be passed on through many generations, which will impact all of eternity. Never underestimate your impact on building God's kingdom, especially as a godly father. It is then your children will see an all-loving God as their heavenly father.  Be a good and holy leader and example to your children. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Hebrews%2013%3A7&version=NLT (Hebrews 13:7) Remember your leaders who taught you the word of God. Think of all the good that has come from their lives, and follow the example of their faith. We are on Day 1640 of our Trek, and it's time to explore another nugget of wisdom, which includes an inspirational quote along with some wise words from Gramps for today's trek. If you apply the words you hear today, over time, it will help you become more healthy, wealthy, and wise as you continue your daily trek of life. So let's jump right in with today's nugget: Today's quote is from Mahatma Gandhi, and it is: A burning passion coupled with absolute detachment is the key to all success. The Key To All Success Success manifests itself in various ways, and to some extent, like beauty, it is in the eye of the beholder. Most of us think of success in financial or monetary measures, but that is only one indicator of a successful life and certainly not the most important. You can be successful in many areas of life. Some success measures that come to mind are family, ministry, work, business athletics, health, and finances. Being successful in one of these areas indicates whether you will be successful in another area, but correlation does equal causation. You may become highly wealthy from a worldly perspective, but if you neglect your family and it falls apart, success is undoubtedly diminished by a more critical failure. To be successful in any area of life, you must have the passion for being successful and yet personally detached from that success. You must not allow your passion to be successful to compromise your integrity and morals.  As Christ-follower, your success must be grounded in the precepts for living found in God's Word.  All success will ultimately come from God, and it is He who we should attribute our success to. That being said, God still expects us to do our part to be successful. As an analogy, God does feed the birds of the air, but He doesn't throw the worms into the nest for them.  So it is with us; we must have the passion for succeeding but never compromise God's Word to do so. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Joshua%201%3A7&version=NLT (Joshua 1:7) Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the instructions Moses gave you. Do not deviate from them, turning either to the right or to the left. Then you will be successful in everything you do. As you ponder this nugget of wisdom for yourself, please encourage your friends and family to join us and then come along tomorrow for another day of ‘Wisdom-Trek, Creating a Legacy.' Wisdom is the final frontier in gaining true knowledge. We are on Day 1631 of our Trek, and it's time to explore another nugget of wisdom, which includes an inspirational quote along with some wise words from Gramps for today's trek. If you apply the words you hear today, over time, it will help you become more healthy, wealthy, and wise as you continue your daily trek of life. So let's jump right in with today's nugget: Today's quote is from Bob Hope, and it is: A bank is a place that will lend you money if you can prove that you don't need it. Monetary Slavery Bob Hope was a comedian, so we understand that his quote was supposed to be a joke, but as with many jokes, it is based on truth.  Banks are only in the business of making loans where there is little or no question on whether that loan will be paid off promptly. To qualify for a loan, you must have tangible assets that significantly exceed the loan's value. Other than the federal and many state governments, we as individuals are not permitted to spend beyond our capacity to pay back the borrowed money. For so many people, we live in an age, especially in the western world, where we are unwilling to wait to accumulate the monies needed to purchase non-essential things. This is not wise. The fact is that most things that we buy are non-essential. We allow our short-term desires to have material goods to delude us into thinking that it is ok to borrow to obtain something. It has become such an epidemic that we then have to pay for storage buildings to store all of this stuff that we rarely use. What a pathetic and disgusting cycle. We then have to work extra to pay our bills, which harms our family and other relationships. How does any of this make sense? Plain and simple, it makes no sense. When we borrow to purchase non-essential things, we become a slave to the lender and ultimately to the items we have unwisely purchased.  As a general rule, unless it is an absolute necessity, never borrow money to buy assets that depreciate. About the only item that is left is your home. When purchasing a home, only purchase one that will appreciate in value and one that you can genuinely afford. You can get by with a lot less than you imagine. I grew up in an old farmhouse with three bedrooms and one bathroom for twelve persons. Yes, it was inconvenient at times, but we made it work, because we had to. None of us favor slavery, yet so many people put themselves into bondage to buy things to impress others who we don't even like that much. This is insanity. Instead, let us be wise. Borrow only when it is essential and only for items that will appreciate over time. Even then, it is best to keep all borrowing to a minimum and set yourself free from it as quickly as possible. The wisest man who ever lived, King Solomon, tells us:  https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs%2022%3A7&version=NLT (Proverbs 22:7) Just as the rich rule the poor, so the borrower is servant to the lender. Hello, my friend; this is Gramps. Thanks for coming along on our trek to increase Wisdom and Create a Living Legacy. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs%2016%3A16&version=NLT (Proverbs 16:16) How much better to get wisdom than gold, and sound judgment than silver!  Today is Day 1613 of our Trek, and it's time for another nugget of wisdom, which includes an inspirational quote along with some wise words from Gramps for today's trek. If you apply the words you hear today, over time, it will help you become more healthy, wealthy, and wise as you continue your daily trek of life. So let's jump right in with today's nugget of wisdom: Today's quote is from Gordon McDonald, and it is:  No driven person could ever say what John the Baptiser said, because driven people have to keep gaining more and more attention, more and more power, more and more material assets. The seductions of the public life would have led to a competitive posture, but the original call to commitment from within spoke louder.  A Driven Person I hate to admit it, but this quote hit a little too close to home. While my mindset is moderating somewhat as I mature both in age and my outlook on life, I still struggle with a very driven personality. I enjoy winning. I enjoy gaining attention. I appreciate material assets. I enjoy having authority and using it. I suspect that many of you have struggled with these same issues, regardless of whether you are introverted or extroverted.  While there is nothing wrong with winning, gaining attention, material assets, or authority, our mindset, and motives that underlie the pursuit of them can lead us down an evil path.  Just imagine if John the Baptiser had the attitude we do, how would that have impacted his life and relationship with his cousin, Jesus Christ. John was gaining ever-increasing popularity, with thousands coming to listen to him. Many of these same people believed in him and were baptized.  It would have been effortless for him to start thinking that he was something special, which in God's eyes he was.  That was not his position or calling in life. He was to be the proclaimer and forerunning of Jesus Christ, the Messiah. Yet, with his growing popularity, John could have thought it was all about him. Jesus even backed this up when he said in Luke 7:28 https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Luke%207%3A28&version=NLT (Luke 7:28)  I tell you, of all who have ever lived, none is greater than John. I know if Jesus said that about me, I would think I was pretty important. Fortunately, John understood his place in the creation and redemption story. Just to make sure that other people at the time also understood, God permitted John to be executed when his ministry was complete.  There could be no confusion on who was the Messiah. In the second half of the verse above, Jesus focused on how vital His kingdom was when he said. Yet even the least person in the Kingdom of God is greater than he is! So I have to ask myself, and I will ask you also, are you an imager of God reflecting Jesus Christ in your life, or do you come off as an imager of yourself? I know I have work to do in this area, how about you? John the Baptist knew his position when he proclaimed in https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Mark%201%3A7&version=NLT (Mark 1:7) John announced: “Someone is coming soon...

If we've heard Jesus tell us to love our enemies, change our priorities, stop worrying and more, there should be one question rising to our lips: "How?" The Sermon on the Mount is not an outline for a new, cotton-candy philosophy. Almost every sentence challenges us to super-human virtue. And we rightly ask, "How?" The answer is, "Ask." If you're too holy to pray for your own needs, Jesus has a word for you: "Ask." The word "pray" in fact means "ask," and we already know that the Father wants us to pray. So He says, through His Son, "Ask - and keep asking." It may seem like a low-level relationship to come to God because we need things, but maybe that's where we have to start. Wisdom is the final frontier in gaining true knowledge. Our mission is to create a legacy of wisdom, seek out discernment and insights, and boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Hello, my friend; this is Gramps; thanks for coming along on our journey to increase Wisdom and Create a Living Legacy. Today is Day 1582 of our Trek, and it's time for your daily snippet of wisdom, which includes an inspirational quote along with some wise words from Gramps for today's trek. If you apply the words you hear today, over time, it will help you become healthy, wealthy, and wise as you continue your daily trek of life. So let's jump right in with today's nugget: Today's quote is from Katharine Graham, and it is:   To love what you do and feel that it matters — how could anything be more fun?   Love What You Do It has been said that if you find work that you love, you won't have to work another day of your life. While I understand the meaning and motivation of this quote, there are aspects of any work that you may not love. There are aspects of every area of life that you may not love naturally. The key to love what you do is strongly controlled by our choices. Those choices start early in life by the hobbies we do, and the training we participate in. Those choices begin in our minds. I grew up on an apple orchard, and while there were many aspects of the hard work of farming that I did not particularly enjoy, we had work to do and we did it. As I look back to those formative years, I can see that my work helped support our family of twelve and learned many valuable lessons in the process. During those years, I also learned that I could choose to enjoy what I do, especially when it did make a difference. Those were difficult years, but we also had a lot of fun as a family. As I grew into adulthood, I realized that I enjoyed working because the work I was doing did make a positive impact. First, it provided for Paula and our five kids, and second, it also benefited those companies we served. Even when there were difficulties in our businesses, we chose to enjoy those times and learn the valuable lessons thrusts on us.  We knew that we should be grateful to God for everything we did and those who helped us achieve what we did. We learned that in all things, we are working for something that matters, which is going our very best in our service to God and others because it helps to grow God's kingdom on earth.  My appeal to you is to choose to love what you do in all aspects of life because you are making a difference in your world. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1%20Corinthians%2010%3A31&version=NLT (1 Corinthians 10:31) So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Ephesians%206%3A7&version=NLT (Ephesians 6:7) Work with enthusiasm, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. As you ponder this nugget of daily wisdom yourself, I would ask you to please encourage your friends and family to join us and then come along tomorrow for another day of ‘Wisdom-Trek, Creating a Legacy.' In the Kingdom, doing the right thing is not enough! It's possible to do the right thing for the wrong reason. Under the Old Covenant it must have happened all the time. But as we've explored the Sermon on the Mount, we've learned that Jesus is very concerned with our motives - what's going on in the deep recesses of our hearts. On Friday we talked about the motive of impressing others with our holiness, which is really a deception. A lie. Today we'll look at the better motivation. Today is Day 1563 of our Trek, and it's time for your daily snippet of wisdom, which includes an inspirational quote along with some wise words from Gramps for today's trek. If you apply the words you hear today, over time, it will help you become healthy, wealthy, and wise as you continue your daily trek of life. So let's jump right in with today's nugget: Today's quote is from Gramps, and it is:    The function of fear is to warn us of danger, not to make us afraid to face it.    Facing Fear It seems to me that so many people are fearful today. Maybe it has always been that way. Like so much of our news and information, the evidence of fear is exploding through social media. Even much of the division and anger we see on display is rooted in fear. A proper level of fear is required for our safety, but only when the evidence supports that fear, which is rare. We have become so used to fear, if we are faced with an event where we should be fearful, we do not know how to face that fear properly. Most media outlets and online social sites feed on people's fear because it drives eyeballs and revenue to their platform.  This happens on all sides of the political spectrum. It is not reserved just for one ideology. Most of what we experience as fear today is False Evidence Appearing Real. We cannot allow ourselves to succumb to fear. When we do face real fear, we need to face it head-on. Now, if there is imminent danger to our lives or the lives of those we love, then the response should be to remove yourself from that situation as quickly as possible. Otherwise, we need to conquer what is causing fear in our lives. Unfounded fear of success in any aspect of our life is an idea-crippling, experience-crushing, success-stalling inhibitor inflicted only by yourself. We must have the courage to carry on and fulfill our God-given destiny for our life. Courage is not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. As Christ-followers, we need to come to the understanding that the opposite of faith is fear. Let us have faith that God is in control of our lives and all events throughout the world.  God's love will keep us in His arms, and nothing can separate us from His love. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Romans%208%3A38&version=NLT (Romans 8:38) And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God's love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God's love.  https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=2%20Timothy%201%3A7&version=NLT (2 Timothy 1:7) For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline. As you ponder this nugget of wisdom for yourself, I would ask you to please encourage your friends and family to join us and then come along on Monday for another day of ‘Wisdom-Trek, Creating a Legacy.' January 3, 2021 | Pastor Nathan Elms On average, we have tens of thousands of thoughts a day, but we don’t register most of them. We tend to ignore the most repetitive, persistent thoughts, such as the ones that take us through our morning grooming ritual or our daily commute. What we do is so driven by habit that we don’t have to think ourselves through every step. To feel how this works, try brushing your teeth with your nondominant hand. Odd, right? In the same manner that we do not think about habitual actions... we have habitual thoughts, that we think about WITHOUT THINKING about it. • The thoughts you think WITHOUT thinking are who you are… • The thoughts you intentionally think are who you want to become... • We can think just like unbelievers… • We can respond to trouble just like unbelievers… • We can deal with pain just like unbelievers… In fact, re-forming how we think about things is one of the most important things about becoming a believer. 9 Biblical Truths 1. Hello, my friend, I am Guthrie Chamberlain, your captain on our journey to increase wisdom and create a living legacy. Thank you for joining us today as we explore wisdom on our 2nd millennium of podcasts. Today is https://wisdom-trek.com/captivate-podcast/day-1536/ (Day 1536) of our trek, and it is Worldview Wednesday. Creating a Biblical Worldview is essential to have a proper perspective on today's current events. To establish a Biblical Worldview, you must have a proper understanding of God and His Word. This week, we will expand on the past course work as we continue reviewing the book from Dr. Michael S Heiser titled Supernatural. The book is an abbreviated version of his more comprehensive book The Unseen Realm. I highly recommend both of these books. Creating a Biblical Worldview based on how the Old and New Testaments connect with God's overall plan for humanity is essential. This book review will help us understand what the Bible teaches about the unseen world and why it matters. Cosmic Geography The divine transgressions we looked at in the previous chapter had something in common. They were both supernatural rebellions aimed at co-opting God's plan for humanity and the restoration of his rule. In this chapter review, we'll look at another rebellion, one that originated with people. This rebellion produced a predicament that we're all still part of, and that predicament involves supernatural beings. The titanic struggle for God's restoration strategy took a turn for the worse that only the return of Jesus will finally resolve. The Tower of BabelThe story of the Tower of Babel (Genesis 11:1–9) is simultaneously one of the best-known and least-understood accounts in the Bible. Children learn about it in Sunday school as the time when God confused earth's human languages. After the flood, God repeated the command he'd given to Adam and Eve to cover the earth. He was trying to kick-start the spread of his ruling influence through humanity. Once again, it didn't work. People refused. Rebellion in their hearts, they had a better idea, or so they thought. They decided to build a tower to avoid being scattered (Genesis 11:4). The logic seems odd. Sure, an amazing tower would make them famous (Genesis 11:4), but how would that prevent scattering across the earth? The answer lies in the tower. Bible scholars and archaeologists know ancient Babylon, and cities around it built towers called ziggurats. The purpose of the ziggurats was to provide places where people could meet the gods. They were part of temple zones. Rather than make the world like Eden—to spread the knowledge and rule of God everywhere—the people wanted to bring God down at one spot. That wasn't God's plan, and he was displeased. Hence his statement—again to his council members in https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Genesis+11%3A7&version=NLT (Genesis 11:7), "Come, let us go down and confuse the people with different languages. Then they won't be able to understand each other.”  God did so, and humanity was separated and scattered. The incident explains how the nations listed a chapter earlier in Genesis 10 came to be. That's the story most Christians know. Now for the one they don't. The Gods and Their NationsGenesis 11 isn't the only passage that describes what happened at the Tower of Babel. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Deuteronomy+32%3A8-9&version=ESV (Deuteronomy 32:8–9) describes it this way: When the Most High gave to the nations their inheritance, when he divided mankind, he fixed the...

Where our mission is to create a legacy of wisdom, to seek out discernment and insights, to boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Hello, my friend; I am Guthrie Chamberlain, your captain on our journey to increase Wisdom and Create a Living Legacy. Thank you for joining us today as we explore wisdom on our 2nd millennium of podcasts. This is Day 1525 of our Trek, and it is time for our 3-minute mini trek called Wisdom Unplugged. This short nugget of wisdom includes an inspirational quote with a little bit of additional content for today's trek. Consider this your vitamin supplement of wisdom for today. So let's jump right in with today's nugget: Today's quote is from  William James, and it is:  It is our attitude at the beginning of a difficult task which, more than anything else, will affect its successful outcome.    Check Your Attitude Everyone wants to know the secret of success in all areas of life, and it would be great if, indeed, there was a secret to being successful. Let me state an irrefutable truth; there is no secret to success. Yes, there are occasional fortunate circumstances that can expedite your success, but only if you are prepared to take advantage of those opportunities. One way to prepare for success is to check your attitude at the beginning of a difficult task. When you have a positive attitude, you train your mind to take advantage of the opportunities before you, regardless of their difficulties.  Your attitude in life is probably the most critical single factor to ensure success. Yes, you need to prepare and gain the skills needed for success, but your success chances will certainly be limited if you do not have a positive attitude.  So the recipe for success is this: check your attitude, be prepared, seek opportunities, then mix all of that with a healthy dose of hard work and perseverance. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Joshua%201%3A7&version=NLT (Joshua 1:7) Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the instructions Moses gave you. Do not deviate from them, turning either to the right or to the left. Then you will be successful in everything you do. That's a wrap for today's Wisdom Unplugged quote. The Amazing Grace of GodTitus 2:11-15 https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Titus%202%3A11-15&version=NIV11 For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. 12 It teaches us to say “No” toungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this presentage, 13 while we wait for the blessed hope—the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, JesusChrist, 14 who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a peoplethat are his very own, eager to do what is good.15 These, then, are the things you should teach. Encourage and rebuke with all authority. Do not letanyone despise you.”Bottom Line for this message” Grace has a Face”Verse 1111 For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people.1. First, the use of the word “for” connects this verse to the previous verses. Because we are therecipients of God's grace and salvation, we should reflect the values and engage the behaviorsthat Paul promoted in verses 2-10.Paul previously discussed preaching, leadership and teaching, all of which is important to the Christianlifestyle (making disciples who make disciples), but what God does in verse 11 can be summed up in onework: GRACE2. What is grace?1. Many say “unmerited favor” or “God's favorable attitude towards us”, but these definitionsare too abstract relative to this verse. Websters has several definitions, but Websters doesn'tdefine Grace for us, God does. The grace of God is an ACTION, not an ABSTRACTION. It's a PERSON, not a CONCEPT.1. Grace is an actual event in space and time. Grace has a face – Jesus ChristScarred, bloody and in agonyA face of the person that suffered and died on the cross for your sins and mineA face of grace- bringing salvation to all people3. Grace isn't cheap…it comes at such a great cost, but our modern theology sometimesattempts to cheapen it by offering people what Dietrich Bonhoeffer called “cheap grace”:Cheap grace is: the preaching of forgiveness without requiring repentanceBaptism without church disciplineCommunion without repentanceAbsolution without personal confessionOne thing that I believe has made Grace appear cheaper is the modern American church.- Modern American church grace says: “all are welcome. Come as you are. The coffee's on us, sitback and relax…and don't worry about changing. We couldn't ask you to do that. We don't wantto offend you.”- Grace says: “all are welcome. Come as you are and be prepared and willing for God to changeyou. Because when you recognize the true cost of grace, you recognize that it is a debt that youcannot pay, and you are compelled to change…out of gratitude. You will have to die to yourself.Be prepared to sacrifice parts of your sinful lifelstyle that the world accepts, and says it's OK, butGod doesn't.”Galatians 5:24 https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Galatians+5%3A24&version=NIV24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.Grace says “I created man and woman”. Modern American grace says “it's all good…whatever you wantto be. God probably made a mistake” in an effort to avoid looking intolerant.God says “I created marriage between a man and a woman”. Modern American grace says “it's allgood…marry who you want. Who are we to judge? Besides, our numbers are low”.God says “I knit babies together in their mother's wombs”. Modern American grace says “It's a woman'sbody and she has right to choose”. Who are we to judge?Bonnhoeffer went on to say:“Costly grace is the treasure hidden in the field; for the sake of it a man will go and sell all that he has. Itis the pearl of great price to buy for which the merchant will sell all his goods. It is the kingly rule ofChrist, for whose sake a man will pluck out the eye which causes him to stumble; it is the call of JesusChrist at which the disciple leaves his nets and follows him.”“Such grace is costly because it calls us to follow, and it is grace because it calls us to follow Jesus Christ. It is costly because it costs a man his life, and it is grace because it gives a man the only true life. It iscostly because it condemns sin, and grace because it justifies the sinner. Above all, it is costly because itcost God the life of his Son: "ye were bought at a price," and what has cost God much cannot be cheapfor us. Above all, it is grace because God did not reckon his Son too dear a price to pay for our life, butdelivered him up for us. Costly grace is the Incarnation of God.”Dietrich Bonhoeffer, The Cost of DiscipleshipIt's not popular to say that Jesus is the only way to God. Modern culture and theologies…even some inthe Christian Church…see this as too narrow and restrictive, intolerant and unloving. But to say there aremany ways, makes no sense, and stands in the face of the sacrifice of true Grace.God would not have sent His only Son to die on a cross if He could have saved us by any other means. No Grace would mean no salvation. If there were a bunch of ways to get to heaven, then why did Christdie? When Jesus was praying in Luke 22:42https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Luke+22%3A42&version=NIV"Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done."Basically asking…if there's any other way. God didn't say, “well, actually there are a thousand ways, butI'm going to make you go through this anyway”. Just No.Grace has a Face. The face of JesusGalatians 2:21 https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Galatians+2%3A21&version=NIV21 I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died fornothing!”Back to Verse 1111 For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all peopleWhat is salvation? While sometimes in the Bible, salvation is being saved from one's enemies, in the New Testament, itrefers more to end of time events…God's judgement. Salvation, in this sense, is being saved from God'sperfect judgement…through His perfect GRACE- Grace makes all people savable – every sin of every person has it's answer in Jesus.- “Every person who ends up in hell steps over a blood-stained cross with their name on it to getthere”Grace has a Face…the face of Jesus. The face of salvation.1. Grace TRAINS us. (verse 12)12 It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright andgodly lives in this present age,1. Grace doesn't flatter us…it teaches us…it trains us-It doesn't tell us all is well, but speaks bluntly, directly and lovingly-for our own good.Titus 2:12 puts an end, once and for all to any theology that separates salvation from the demands ofobedience to Jesus Christ.-Grace teaches us that our lifestyle is suicidal…not in a worldly way, but in an eternalway.-Grace teaches us what we need to do, and what not to do in order to change.-Grace educates us, trains us and to reform and transform. God expects us to go in anew direction when we experience His Grace…His Son…His salvation. If you have you accepted His Grace…His son, and have not been changed, maybe you didn't.-Grace trains us to live better lives according to God's standards and priorities and notour own.-Our works become the natural response to HIS works- Grace teaches us to live a certain kind of life, to live in a particular way, and defined byparticular character qualities.1. Develop self-control2. Live uprightly3. Live Godly lives…for NOW, not for some other place and time, but for here and now. What does that training look like?1. Sometimes it looks like Divine discipline – sometimes it's difficult circumstances.Hebrews 12:7-11 https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Hebrews+12%3A7-11&version=NIV7 Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplinedby their father? 8 If you are not disciplined—and everyone undergoes discipline—then you are notlegitimate, not true sons and daughters at all. 9 Moreover, we have all had human fathers whodisciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father ofspirits and live! 10 They disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for ourgood, in order that we may share in his holiness. 11 No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful.Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained byit.- If you feel that the circumstances of life are stretching you beyond what you think you canbear, or beyond what you want to bear, it may well be the Grace of God training you.Like a serious workout at the gym…it hurts, and isn't pleasant at the time. But if werecognize it as Grace and embrace it for what it is, then it will have that amazingstrengthening, fruit-producing effect.Embrace it…embrace the training of GraceHOW?1. Training requires some degree of cooperation or response on our part.Anyone who has been to the gym or worked with a trainer understands that you can't just showup for training and watch the trainer do all the work and somehow benefit from it. You have toactively engage and actively participate if you expect to be changed by it.2. We have to deny ourselvesThe first step is self-denial.You can't train for a marathon without first denying various habits and behaviors in your lifethat would get in the way of you preparing for the race….like diet and lots and lots of running.Training in grace is like training for a marathon- you have to say NO to several things as a firststep, in this case: 12 It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passionsUnGodliness – Whatever actions or attitudes undermine God's centrality in your life (Ifit makes God marginal, it is ungodly)…like cheap American Christian Church Grace.Godliness is having a regard for God's glory and God's will in every aspect of our lives, doing everything out of reverence and love for Him.Worldly Passions – The result of a hungry soul that doesn't have God at the center.Anything that steals your focus away from God…like maybe politics?Saying NO is not a one-time thing. It's an ongoing part of training. We're called to take up our cross, the cross of self-denial every day.Count the cost of what training will require.Luke 14:28 https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Luke+14%3A28&version=NIV28 “Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won't you first sit down and estimate the cost to see ifyou have enough money to complete it? 29 For if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it,everyone who sees it will ridicule you, 30 saying, ‘This person began to build and wasn't able to finish.'2. Grace is POWERFUL-Just as God redeemed Israel from Egyptian bondage, so too the Son of God redeems, withgreat power, a new covenant people from bondage to lawlessness and sin. Only the Grace of God,through the death of His Son can redeem from lawlessness, can liberate from sin and can set the captivesoul free. Nothing else will…nothing else can.Jesus described the reason for His coming in this way:Mark 10:45 https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Mark+10%3A45&version=NIV45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom formany.”Paul described it this way…2 Corinthians 5:21 https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=2+Corinthians+5%3A21&version=NIV21 God made him who had no sin to be sin [a] for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness ofGodGrace has the power to conform us into the righteousness of God2. Grace teaches us to WAIT for what we hope for…to wait expectantly for His coming13 while we wait for the blessed hope—the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, JesusChrist,-Waiting sometimes seems passive, like we are not doing anything, but Biblically speaking, waiting is notpassive…it's ACTIVE- Waiting in this sense draws us forward into action, rather than causing us to relax- Like a bridegroom waiting for his bride, there's nothing passive about waiting if the focus ofyour wait is your primary desire. It's important to realize that there is a profound difference between passive waiting and active waiting.Passive waiting can take the form of cynicism, complaining, or simply doing nothing.Active waiting, however, is a posture that seeks to cultivate habits that are focused on intentionalpreparation. It is a blessed hope because unlike every other hope we might have, it cannot be disappointed….Jesus iscoming back.We are waiting for “the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ”.Are you waiting on the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior? If you are excitedly waitingfor Jesus to come, your waiting looks like preparation. Your preparation looks like fruit. If you're notprepared, and not bearing fruit, then what are you waiting for??(Grace is Powerful) (Grace teaches us to actively wait)2. Grace is PURIFYING14 who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that arehis very own, eager to do what is good.-It cleanses, washes and renews: The death of Christ cleanses us-It purifies our hearts by faith and our lives by the Holy Spirit.Proverbs 25:4 https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs+25%3A4&version=NIVRemove the dross from the silver, and a silversmith can produce a vessel; The Refiner's fire is purifying: When precious metals are refined the impurities (dross) must first beremoved. These pollutants are burned away as the metals are subjected to intense heat. As a result ofthe refining process the craftsman is given pure silver to work with as he crafts the metal into a beautifulmasterpiece. Without first removing the dross, the precious metal would be unworkable. Thesilversmith knows when the silver is pure because he can see his reflection in it.Have we allowed God to purify us through His grace? Can He see His reflection in our lives?3. Grace is POSSESIVEVerse 14 …to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.-Kind of paradoxical – even though grace is incredibly generous, it is also tremendouslypossessive…even jealous. He PURCHASED us. To PURIFY us to POSSESS us…literally for Himself.…a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.1 Peter 2:9-10 https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1+Peter+2%3A9-10&version=NIV9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's special possession, that you maydeclare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. 10 Once you were nota people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you havereceived mercy.-When Grace comes into your life, it takes over…it buys you and makes you its own. That's avery good thing…that's SALVATION.-When you encounter the Grace of God…the cross of Christ, you are no longer your own, but Hisown possession. Grace is possessive because it is costly. It cost God the life of His only Son.1 Corinthians 6:19-20https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1+Corinthians+6%3A19-20&version=NIV19 Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you havereceived from God? You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with yourbodies.Grace appeared at the climax of history through the death of Jesus Christ on the cross, but Grace isalways there for us in the continual self-giving of the Son, like a steady, never-ending stream.-Have you embraced Grace, and all He provides and requires?-Am I now living a life defined by Grace? - You will know by the fruit.- God's Grace appears in verse 11, and God's glory appears in verse 13. The grace that has appearedspeaks of His first coming, and the Glory that will appear speaks of His second coming.4. God's Grace teaches us who is LordGod's Grace teaches us what we should learn15 These, then, are the things you should teach. Encourage and rebuke with all authority. Do not letanyone despise you.”1. Learn doctrine…these are the things you should teach – refers to the entire letter-a letter filled withsound teaching2. Learn duty…encourage with authority. Go alongside and challenge in the way we should all live as welook for “the blessed hope”.3. Learn discernment: if “encourage” speaks to us about the way we should go, “rebuke” admonishes usconcerning the way we should NOT go. When we confront or correct, we do so with all authority. Wedon't compromise…Grace cost too much to compromise.4. Learn dedication: Speaking the truth will not always be popular, but it will always be necessary. It willrequire courage, conviction, the confidence of Christ – and will always require love as it's foundation. This will enable you to humbly stand tall, refusing to be intimidated by Christ's opponents. In this, youwill not let anyone disregard or despise you.Don't worry about the nay-sayers. Be above reproach and love them. (Like Paul and Timothy)Recap1. Grace isn't cheap. Don't treat it cheaply and don't represent it as cheap. That's false teaching.Grace Christian Fellowship –the sign says: “Love God, Love People”. We love God, and we lovepeople because we so strongly desire to show people the true Grace of God through Jesus Christ. That tells peoplethe message is more important than the brand…that love is more important than a logo…that the objective is more important than opticsthat it's better to be a hospital for the lost, than a country club for the savedthat Grace itself is precious…that time here is short, but eternity isn't…that conviction is more important than comfortwe can't say “we're good”, when we know we're all badGrace is costly. Grace is Honest. And Grace is redemptivebut at the same time, any of this done without love is worthless2. Let Grace train you…like a marathon. What does it mean when we say, "He went to his rest?" There are different levels of rest we can experience - different dimensions of the safety and peace and grace that God offers. In death, Christians believe, we will find a new fullness of rest. To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. On Thursday Jim mentioned 4 "messengers" of rest: Noah, Moses, David, and Jesus - and the last 2 are different. Here's the conclusion of, Discovering God's Rest for Today. Who are the all-time world champions of Rest? The Bible records the accomplishments of at least four leaders, advocates, heroes of rest. Each of these trailblazers reveals something different about the nature of God's rest, but they all agree, there's only one way to enter into it. We'll learn about 3 of the 4 "resting champions" now. Jim's new sermon is called, Discovering God's Rest for Today. Some people are so disconnected from reality, we wonder "How could anyone believe that?" And the answer could be, "They had help!" The Present Deception is the title of the sermon we started yesterday. In 2 Thessalonians Paul refers to three kinds of supernatural delusion - three "means of deception" as Jim calls them. There's religious deception employing false doctrine; a mass deception through demonic miracles; and a third, much more frightening delusion that we'll discuss today. Once we're Christians, we don't have to worry about being deceived, right? No, that's a deception. Paul wrote to the believers in Thessalonica not to allow anyone to fool them. So we can be fooled, if we're not careful. He gave specific information to combat an error that was popular at the time, but - even better - he exposed the parts of the devil's trap, and showed us how it works. Pastor Jim will point out 3 of these illusions in his sermon, The Present Deception, and we'll hear the first 2 today. If so, you’re not alone – a recent survey from PcW showed that 75% of the 3,500 global clients surveyed are expecting a further downshift economically. America’s fiscal year ended on June 30 and the CBO released are first glimpse of COVID-19 on the country’s financial performance. The good news is that federal government revenues are only down 1%. The bad news? Spending was up more than 50%. Today’s Key Questions - Do the jobs/unemployment figures released from various sources paint a true picture of America’s workforce? - How does a decline in earnings impact a company’s P/E ratio? - Is the next move in the S&P 500 10% higher or lower? Welcome to Day 1450 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me.This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to WisdomHow Simple – Wisdom UnpluggedWisdom - the final frontier to true knowledge. Welcome to Wisdom-Trek! Where our mission is to create a legacy of wisdom, to seek out discernment and insights, to boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Hello, my friend, I am Guthrie Chamberlain, your captain on our journey to increase Wisdom and Create a Living Legacy. Thank you for joining us today as we explore wisdom on our 2nd millennium of podcasts. This is Day 1450 of our Trek, and it is time for our 3-minute mini trek called Wisdom Unplugged. This short nugget of wisdom includes an inspirational quote with a little bit of additional content for today's trek. Consider this your vitamin supplement of wisdom for today. So let's jump right in with today's nugget: Today's quote is from  Gerald Jompolsky, and it is:   How simple it is to see all the worry in the world cannot control the future. How simple it is to see that we can only be happy now and that there will never be a time when it is not now.      How SimpleWorry is so self-destructive since no amount of worry will result in a positive change in any situation. Worry in no way will control the future, except for the possibility of allowing circumstances to slide in a downward spiral. Only action can affect change, which will enable you to control the outcome of the future. Tied closely to worry is the impact that it will have on your happiness of your current situation in life. We only can be happy now, because there is never a time which is not the present. We can look forward to the possibility of a future time, but if worry steals from us the ability to be happy now, then there is little chance we will be happy when the future is now. So we must choose today not to worry, and we must choose today to be happy. That does not mean we don't take action today to change our current circumstances if they need to be changed, but while we are taking action, we must choose not to worry and chose to be happy. To do so is really quite simple. The choice is up to you, and it a choice that you must make each day. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Psalm%2019%3A7&version=NLT (Psalm 19:7) The instructions of the Lord are perfect, reviving the soul. The decrees of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs%208%3A5&version=NLT (Proverbs 8:5) You simple people, use good judgment. You foolish people, show some understanding. That's a wrap for today's Wisdom Unplugged quote. The "Hebrew of Hebrews" was headed for hell. There were few as accomplished in the Jewish religion as Saul of Tarsus. And yet he was rejecting God's Messiah and murdering believers, right up to the moment he was grabbed by grace. If anyone knew that the Law doesn't save, it was our old friend, Paul. There's one New Testament church that's forever associated with the word, "foolish." "O, foolish Galatians!" cries Paul. "Who has bewitched you?" His disappointment in them leaps off the page.
