Welcome to Day 1709 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me.This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to WisdomA Good Name – Daily WisdomWelcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps. We are on Day 1709 of our Trek, and it's time to explore another nugget of wisdom, which includes an inspirational quote along with some wise words from Gramps for today's trek. Wisdom is the final frontier in gaining true knowledge. We are on a daily trek to create a legacy of wisdom, seek out discernment and insights, and boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Hello, my friend; this is Gramps. Thanks for coming along on today's trek as we increase Wisdom and Create a Living Legacy. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs%2016%3A16&version=NLT (Proverbs 16:16) How much better to get wisdom than gold, and sound judgment than silver! If you apply the words you hear today, over time, it will help you become more healthy, wealthy, and wise as you continue your daily trek of life. So let's jump right in with today's nugget: Today's quote is from Proverbs 22:1, and it is: A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold. A Good Name The book of Proverbs is packed with nuggets of wisdom. I know I have mentioned it several times in the past, but I can't help but emphasize that you should invest time each day to read a few verses or a chapter in Proverbs. Today's quote emphasizes what is most desirable in life, even more desirable than massive amounts of riches, including silver and gold. To be a person of integrity, which results in maintaining a good name, is more desirable. To be esteemed as a good person is considered even better than silver or gold. Wealth of any kind is so fleeting, and its value is so temporal. One aspect of creating a living legacy is to live in such a manner so when others think of you as a person; they don't think of your financial treasures but your wealth as an individual that they hold you in high esteem because of your good name. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1+Timothy+6%3A17-19&version=NLT (1 Timothy 6:17-19) Teach those who are rich in this world not to be proud and not to trust in their money, which is so unreliable. Their trust should be in God, who richly gives us all we need for our enjoyment. Tell them to use their money to do good. They should be rich in good works and generous to those in need, always being ready to share with others. By doing this they will be storing up their treasure as a good foundation for the future so that they may experience true life. As you ponder this nugget of wisdom for yourself, please encourage your friends and family to join us and then come along tomorrow for another day of ‘Wisdom-Trek, Creating a Legacy.' If you would like to listen to any of our past 1708 treks or read the Wisdom Journal, they are available at Wisdom-Trek.com. Welcome to Day 1671 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me.This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to WisdomHalfway to Winning – Daily WisdomWelcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps. So let's jump right in with today's nugget: Today's quote is from Heinrich Heine, and it is: A daring beginning is halfway to winning. Halfway to Winning Everyone desires to succeed in every area of life. To achieve anything of significance in life, you must plan and then work that plan. When you plan, you must stretch yourself, and escape from your comfort zone. Planning is not enough, though. You must execute your project with a passion for success and for completing that plan. Get beyond getting ready to get ready and take action. For most of us, we need to be sufficiently motivated to take action and then have the inner drive to continue through with perseverance when we run into obstacles. If our passion is not strong enough when we begin, we will not make the bold choices needed to succeed ultimately. Set your mind to what you desire for your outcome, and then boldly go forward. Like a boulder rolling down a hill, it is hard to get moving, and the progress is slow and difficult. As boulder gains momentum, it will gain speed and veracity the farther it goes. Be daring, be bold, and make an impact on the world. This is our vocation as citizens of God's kingdom. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=colossians+3%3A17&version=NLT (Colossians 3:17) And whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through him to God the Father. What happens in Corinth, stays in Corinth. We may associate that ancient Greek city with Corinthian columns or "Corinthian leather." But historically, the name has been connected to licentiousness and vice. Our ongoing study of the book of Acts takes us to chapter 18, and we'll walk with Paul from Athens about 50 miles West, to the "sin city" of the day. If you apply the words you hear today, over time, it will help you become more healthy, wealthy, and wise as you continue your daily trek of life. So let's jump right in with today's nugget: Today's quote is from Henry Ford, and it is: A business that makes nothing but money is a poor kind of business. Poor Kind Of Business Businesses and people who become fixated on just making money will end up self-imploding. There is so much more to the life and success of a company and us personally than just accumulating wealth. If money-making is the objective, although for a time wealth is earned, the overall success of a company or individual will be minimized. Money is so so fleeting, and so temporal. Although a business needs to make a profit, that cannot be the primary objective or vision. A business should provide products or services to others that will enrich their lives in some manner. The owners, employees, and customers of a business must each benefit, or there is no foundation for that company. Our lives need to be the same. We need need to enrich the lives of everyone that God places into our world. Whether we own a company, or as individuals, our central purpose for existence is to build God's kingdom by positively impacting the lives of everyone we have the opportunity to associate with. With the technology that we have available today, we can influence others throughout the entire world. There has never been a better time with more opportunities than today. The advancement in technology over the next few years or decades will give us the incredible ability to connect to anyone, anywhere, at any time. Share with others in need what God has richly blessed you with. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1+Timothy+6%3A17-18&version=NLT (1 Timothy 6:17-18) Teach those who are rich in this world not to be proud and not to trust in their money, which is so unreliable. Welcome to Day 1562 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me.This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to WisdomA Father's Gift – Daily WisdomWelcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps! Wisdom is the final frontier in gaining true knowledge. Our mission is to create a legacy of wisdom, seek out discernment and insights, and boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Hello, my friend; this is Gramps; thanks for coming along on our journey to increase Wisdom and Create a Living Legacy. Today is Day 1562 of our Trek, and it's time for your daily snippet of wisdom, which includes an inspirational quote along with some wise words from Gramps for today's trek. If you apply the words you hear today, over time, it will help you become healthy, wealthy, and wise as you continue your daily trek of life. So let's jump right in with today's nugget: Today's quote is from C. Neil Strait, and it is: The best gift a father can give to his child is the gift of himself — his time. For material things mean little, if there is not someone to share them with. A Father's Gift There is one item in life that is not renewable, and that is time. We all have 168 hours each week to invest in any manner that you choose. If we have decided to have children, then they are one thing where we should invest our time in abundance. When your children are grown, they will remember very few of the material things you provide them, but investing time with them will reap an abundant harvest of blessings, both for them, but also for you. I understand that we do need to provide our children with food, clothing, and shelter. That requires working and investing time away from them. But are you allowing work to consume you, where you have very little time left to invest in your spouse and children? What your children need most is you, not fancy trinkets that are soon forgotten. If they have all the riches the world affords, but don't have a dad to share his love with, then all is in vain. Invest wisely, and you are sure to reap a harvest of blessings. Learn to give the good and perfect gift of yourself to those you love. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=James%201%3A17&version=NLT (James 1:17) Whatever is good and perfect is a gift coming down to us from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens. He never changes or casts a shifting shadow. When the Disciples finally understood Jesus' position on divorce, they concluded it might be better not to marry! You can cross-reference Matthew 19 to our current study, earlier in that Gospel. Which comes first: adultery, or divorce? Most people would say that a divorced person cannot, by definition, commit adultery. But Jesus is not most people! And from His perspective, the perspective of heaven, there's a whole lot more immorality going on than we have even imagined. So let's jump right in with today's nugget: Today's quote is from J. Robert Maskin, and it is: One of life's gifts is that each of us, no matter how tired and downtrodden, finds reasons for thankfulness. Reasons for Thankfulness As we approach the end of a year, which has been difficult for most of the world, I find that many have expressed how tired and downtrodden they feel. Even though Granny and my daily routine has not changed that much this year, we have become weary of it all. This year has been full of uncertainty, unrest, contested elections, illness of loved ones, aging parents in decline, and negative financial impact for many. So what should our mindset be at times like this? No matter how tired and downtrodden you may feel, the gift of life given to us by an all-loving God helps us find reasons for thankfulness each day. Yes, life is difficult, and many days it feels like we are building on shifting unstable sand. Regardless of the daily uncertainties, we can have confidence that beneath that shifting sand is a solid bedrock that is our foundation. God is our foundation, and He does not change like shifting shadows from day to day. He is the same, yesterday, today, and forever. Even though you may be going through a challenging year and looking forward to next year, realize that even in the most challenging situation, even when you are tired and downtrodden, you can and should always find reasons for thankfulness. When we are tired we need rest. Rest in the following three verses. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Luke%206%3A48&version=NLT (Luke 6:48) It is like a person building a house who digs deep and lays the foundation on solid rock. When the floodwaters rise and break against that house, it stands firm because it is well built. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Hebrews%2013%3A8&version=NLT (Hebrews 13:8) Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=James%201%3A17&version=NLT (James 1:17) Whatever is good and perfect is a gift coming down to us from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens. He never changes or casts a shifting shadow. Welcome to Day 1547 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me.This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to WisdomMoney is Useful and Useless – Daily WisdomWelcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps! Today is Day 1547 of our Trek, and it's time for your daily snippet of wisdom, which includes an inspirational quote along with some wise words from Gramps for today's trek. If you apply the words you hear today, over time, it will help you become healthy, wealthy, and wise as you continue your daily trek of life. So let's jump right in with today's nugget: Today's quote is from Rick Warren, and it is: Money is a useful servant but a useless god. If you don't manage money, it manages you. Money Is Useful And Useless Money, we all desire it, but how much is enough? This question has been our dilemma since the beginning of commerce. In and of itself, money is neither good nor bad. Yes, for all practical purposes, it is a necessity to live in today's world, but it does not bring happiness, peace, or contentment. We work so hard to obtain it, but would give it all up in an instant for one more breath of life for ourselves or our loved ones. It all boils down to whether you manage your money effectively, or if you allow it to manage you. Many times we will enable it to control us. We buy things that we don't need. The more that you own, the more those very things own you. Some examples of this are buying a home, land, a car, or a boat, that we cannot comfortably afford. We then have to work more just to maintain that lifestyle. Money can be a useful servant that will enable us to further God's kingdom here on earth, but it makes a useless god if it controls us. We have to understand that God owns and retains all that we have. At best, we are caretakers of the things that He has allowed us to manage. Once we die, we take nothing with us, and it passes onto someone else to be the caretaker. This understanding is more of a reality for Granny and me, as we own the generational home and land everyone in the family refers to as ‘The Big House' which my great-grandparents built in 1903. We realize that while we are responsible for maintaining the home and having the privilege of living in it, we are but caretakers for the family and God. So it should be with all that we have. When you have this mindset, then money no longer controls us, but we are responsible for managing all that God has given us to care for. Here is our verse for today: https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1%20Timothy%206%3A17&version=NLT (1 Timothy 6:17) Teach those who are rich in this world not to be proud and not to trust in their money, which is so unreliable. Their trust should be in God, who richly gives us all we need for our enjoyment. As you ponder this nugget of wisdom yourself, I would ask you to please encourage your friends and family to join us and then come along tomorrow for another day of ‘Wisdom-Trek, Creating a Legacy.' If you would like to listen to any of our past 1546 treks or read the Wisdom Journal, they are all available at Wisdom-Trek.com. I encourage you to subscribe to Wisdom-Trek on your favorite podcast player so that each day will be downloaded to you automatically. Jesus didn't come to un-write the Scriptures, but to accomplish them! Beware of some very stupid, but very popular, lies. Like: "God is angry and mean, but Jesus is nice." Or: "Christ tore up the Old Testament, and replaced it with the New." Very early in His ministry the Lord took all that garbage to the curb. If you're a follower of Jesus - not a fan, but a follower - you will love and revere the Word of God. Here's Pastor Jim to complete his message, Promises Made to be Kept. The Pharisees and other religionists offer a system. Jesus brings a gift. People today are just like the people of the first century: we can't believe that God is serious about His standards. He must be grading on a curve, He must be exaggerating for effect - or else no one could measure up. And that doesn't make sense. The Pharisees thought their rules had raised the bar of holiness, but Jesus said they had actually lowered it. Let's join Jim in Matthew 5 for Part 1 of the sermon, Promises Made to be Kept. Welcome to Day 1520 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me.This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to WisdomNo Darkness, Loneliness, or Abandonment – Wisdom UnpluggedWisdom - the final frontier to true knowledge. Welcome to Wisdom-Trek! Where our mission is to create a legacy of wisdom, to seek out discernment and insights, to boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Hello, my friend; I am Guthrie Chamberlain, your captain on our journey to increase Wisdom and Create a Living Legacy. Thank you for joining us today as we explore wisdom on our 2nd millennium of podcasts. This is Day 1520 of our Trek, and it is time for our 3-minute mini trek called Wisdom Unplugged. This short nugget of wisdom includes an inspirational quote with a little bit of additional content for today's trek. Consider this your vitamin supplement of wisdom for today. So let's jump right in with today's nugget: Today's quote is from Charles Kingsley, and it is: It is not darkness you are going to, for God is light. It is not lonely, for Christ is with you. It is not an unknown country, for Christ is there. No Darkness, Loneliness, or Abandonment During times like we face throughout the entire world with the pandemic, unrest, and polarization between people, we may feel that we are shrouded in darkness, in loneliness, and that the world is a bit unstable. From a purely humanistic perspective, there is some truth to this. As a Christ-follower, we have no reason to feel in this manner. First, we are part of God's kingdom which will last forever. We do not need to depend on earthly government structures for our security. We are sojourners in this world, as citizens of an eternal dwelling. We do not need to feel lonely, because we are one with Christ who promises never to leave us or forsake us. We don't need to be shrouded in this world's darkness because God has created all the lights of heaven, illuminating our hearts. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=James%201%3A17&version=NLT (James 1:17) Whatever is good and perfect is a gift coming down to us from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens. He never changes or casts a shifting shadow. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Hebrews%2013%3A5&version=NLT (Hebrews 13:5) Don't love money; be satisfied with what you have. For God has said, “I will never fail you. I will never abandon you.” https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Hebrews%2013%3A14&version=NLT (Hebrews 13:14) For this world is not our permanent home; we are looking forward to a home yet to come. That's a wrap for today's Wisdom Unplugged quote. If you would like free access to my database of over 11,000 inspirational quotes, the link is available on the main page of Wisdom-Trek.com. November 15, 2020 | Pastor Nathan Elms Ancient man had every moment of their lives drenched in the sacred. Every day in the week is named after a mythic deity… They were held within the stories they told… We (all of us) live with a set of troubles, disappointments, suffering... We cannot be defined by our troubles... but by our promises... The moment we allow trouble to define us we cease being people of faith, and begin living by sight! Welcome to Day 1502 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me.This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to WisdomThe Dirty Diner – Humor UnpluggedWisdom - the final frontier to true knowledge. This is Day 1502 of our Trek, and time for a 3-minute mini-trek called Humor Unplugged. Our Thursday podcast will provide a short and clean funny story to help you lighten up and live a rich and satisfying life. Something to cheer you and give a bit a levity in your life. We are told in https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs+15:30&version=NLT (Proverbs 15:30) A cheerful look brings joy to the heart; good news makes for good health. We are also encouraged in https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs+17:22&version=NLT (Proverbs 17:22) A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit saps a person's strength. Consider this your vitamin supplement of cheer for today. So let's jump right in with today's funny which is titled: The Dirty DinerGeorge and Bill were on a road trip out west, and the towns were few and far between. It was getting rather late in the day, and they both were feeling a bit tired, so they decided to stop at a diner for a cup of coffee. As they entered ‘The Last Chance Diner,' they couldn't help but notice that it was a greasy spoon of a place. They saw a booth towards the back of the diner and proceeded towards it. Before they slid into a booth, George had to brush the crumbs off the seat, and Bill took a napkin from the holder and swiped at a spill on the table. Sally, the waitress, came over, chewing loudly on gum, and asked if they wanted some menus. “No, thanks,” said George. “I'll just have a cup of black coffee." "I'll have black coffee too," replied Bill. "And please make sure the cup is clean." Sally shot Bill a nasty look. She turned and marched off into the kitchen. About five minutes later, Sally was back with a tray with cups on it. "Two cups of black coffee," Sally announced. "Which one of you wanted the clean cup?"I hope that brought a smile to your face today. If it did pass your smile onto some else, we all could use a kind smile each day. Our Thursday thought is, “When you go to a restaurant, the less you know about what happens in the kitchen, the more you enjoy your meal.” Here is our verse for today: https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs%2015%3A17&version=NLT (Proverbs 15:17) A bowl of vegetables with someone you love is better than steak with someone you hate. Just as you enjoy these nuggets of humor, please encourage your friends and family to join us and then come along tomorrow for another day of ‘Wisdom-Trek, Creating a Legacy.' Sometimes the best way to understand something is to look at its opposite. We've been orbiting around the tight cluster of imperatives and theological facts in the early verses of Colossians 3. We have died with Christ; but we are raised. We should, in light of that truth, live a higher life, liberated from the slavery we suffered in the kingdom of Satan. Easier said than done, Paul! It's even difficult for us to find models for that level of Christian experience. So what if we look at negative examples - people so worldly-minded they're no heavenly good? Today we'll turn left one book, and open not to Colossians, but to Philippians, chapter 3. This week on From Police to Priest, Episode 13 deals with the horrible story of several NYPD officers being targeted in what has been called an “assassination attempt”.Father Joe and Father Rix look at this instance, and Fr. Joe reflects on a life-threatening encounter when he was a rookie cop, and how ministry has complicated a view that was black-and-white while in he was uniform. It’s a challenging take but we hope it provides a moment of contemplation… that when others do wrong, what is the call that God has for us?We are so grateful for all the support and growth we’ve had these past few months. Jesus reveals the unique ways of the Kingdom of God through his Sermon on the Mount. Theology professor Dr. Alan Tennison unpacks the Beatitudes from Matthew 5 and Luke 6 and helps us understand the biblical context of one of Jesus' most well-known sermons.
Nov. 13, 2019, | Pastor Nathan Elms Giving thanks is God's will for us. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 (https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1+Thessalonians+5%3A18&version=NKJV) If we are only grateful during good times, our response hinges on God's gifts to us, and our gratitude becomes conditional and weak. The Israelites expressed this conditional gratitude to God many times throughout the Old Testament. They were thankful when the Lord delivered them, but they were often grumbling when things didn't go their way. If we're honest, it's easier to be thankful when things are great in our lives, not when they are hard. The danger comes when our warmth towards God becomes dependent on the tangible good things he provides us rather than the good God he has proven to be. James 1:2-4 (https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=James+1%3A2-4&version=NKJV) God desires that we desire Him, the Giver, and not the gifts alone. Psalm 107:15, ESV (https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Psalm+107%3A15&version=ESV) God is not aloof or distant, nor is he fickle in his love like the Israelites and us. He is ever-present and continually offers the gift of himself, even when we experience suffering, persecution, sickness, financial burden, relational turmoil, or other hardships. James 1:17 ESV (https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=James+1%3A17&version=ESV) Here are 7 scientifically proven benefits (Psychology magazine) : 1. Gratitude opens the door to more relationships. 2. Gratitude improves physical health. 3. Gratitude improves psychological health. 4. Gratitude enhances empathy and reduces aggression. 5. Grateful people sleep better. 6. Gratitude improves self-esteem. 7. Gratitude increases mental strength. Recognizing all that you have to be thankful for —even during the worst times—fosters resilience.
September 8, 2019, | Pastor Nathan Elms One of the great ideas of the bible is Deliverance. In fact, Deliverance in many ways defines what it means to be a child of God. Deliverance is a necessary first step. We cannot understand God's doctrine, a theology of grace, or hope to come, without understanding divine deliverance. Jesus introduced his ministry by reading a particular passage from the book of Isaiah—a passage his listeners knew was referring to the Messiah, or the Savior of the world. The words had been written hundreds of years earlier and spoke of the new freedom that was coming in the future. When Jesus stood up to read, He was saying the future had arrived. Liberty would come through Him. Luke 4:17-21 New King James Version (NKJV) https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Luke+4%3A17-21&version=NKJV Notice this: 1. Preach (good news to the poor) 2. Healing (of the brokenhearted) 3. Deliverance ( to the captives) 4. Healing (recovery of sight to the blind) 5. Deliverance (liberty to the oppressed) 6. Preach (proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord) Preaching is mentioned twice. Healing is mentioned twice. And Deliverance is mentioned twice. It is impossible to understand the ministry of Jesus Christ without embracing the preaching of the gospel, the healing of the broken, and the deliverance of the captive. Jesus is our Good News. Jesus is our healer. Jesus is our rescuer. Psalm 91:1-4 (NKJV) https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=ps+91%3A1-4&version=NKJV Psalm 40:17 (NKJV) https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=ps+40%3A17&version=NKJV Exodus 6:6-7:6 https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Exodus+6%3A6-7%3A6&version=NKJV The Four Cups of Passover Every year the Jews celebrate their deliverance by remembering this promise. This promise is the center of their Passover. They have structured the Passover around this promise. The First Cup: Salvation- “I will take you out of Egypt.” Luke 19:10 “For the Son of Man came to seek and save those who are lost.” The Second Cup: Deliverance–“I will deliver you from (Egyptian) slavery.” God takes “Egypt out of them”—teaching them to think and live like free people instead of slaves ruled by a master. Jesus: Matthew 5:17 https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew+5%3A17&version=NKJV The Third Cup: Redemption: “I will redeem you with My power.” John 1:12-13 https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=John+1%3A12-13+&version=NKJV The Fourth Cup: Adoption: “I will acquire you as My people and I will be your God.” The 4th cup is also called the Hallel Cup—the Cup of Highest Praise—a celebration cup, a time to rejoice cup, the Kingdom Party Cup. We must understand the journey of redemption: First, God gets us out of Egypt (spiritual bondage). Second, God gets Egypt (the desire for the sins of the flesh) out of us. This is transformation of heart – change of values – we pursue a different kingdom. We must find freedom! Understanding spiritual wilderness. • Isolation • Suffering • Fear • And the presence of God Remember the story of Israel’s Deliverance. God got them out of Egypt fairly quickly; but it took a whole generation to get Egypt out of them. Deliverance can happen in a moment; but Freedom takes some time. Let me say it this way: The problem isn’t your sin – it is your desire for sin. Freedom will require: 1. Healing. As long as your past has power over you, you remain a slave. 2. Change of focus. Does your mind focus on the past or the future? 3. Faith. God says you are able to possess your promise land. Ultimately, the price of freedom is that you must have faith and take action. God will deliver you from Egypt, but He will not claim your promise. Freedom has changed you. Now you have a work to accomplish.
