What's your retirement plan? I mean, for after this life? A lot of people think they're on one of those "matching contribution" plans: they do a little, God pitches in a little, and when their work on earth is finished they'll be able to take it easy for eternity. But in heaven's accounting system, all our good deeds add up to zero. Your nest egg is a goose egg! Here's Jim in Romans 3. What's the keystone of the Bible? The keystone of an arch is that central wedge that holds everything together. Both sides push toward it. In God's plan, that essential piece is the Cross, and what happened there. What happened there was propitiation - a sacrifice that turns away wrath. Before Christ, believers were forgiven "on credit," looking forward. Afterward, we look back at that same keystone. Here's Jim to advance our discussion in the book of Romans. Welcome to Day 1724 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me.This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to WisdomA Holy Life Shines – Daily WisdomWelcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps. We are on Day 1724 of our Trek, and it's time to explore another nugget of wisdom, which includes an inspirational quote along with some wise words from Gramps for today's trek. Wisdom is the final frontier in gaining true knowledge. We are on a daily trek to create a legacy of wisdom, seek out discernment and insights, and boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Hello, my friend; this is Gramps. Thanks for coming along on today's trek as we increase Wisdom and Create a Living Legacy. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs%2016%3A16&version=NLT (Proverbs 16:16) How much better to get wisdom than gold, and sound judgment than silver!    If you apply the words you hear today, over time, it will help you become more healthy, wealthy, and wise as you continue your daily trek of life. So let's jump right in with today's nugget: Today's quote is from Dwight L. Moody, and it is: A holy life will produce the deepest impression. Lighthouses blow no horns; they only shine. A Holy Life Shines As imagers of God, a lighthouse is such a great example of what our lives are to be like. It is God's spirit that will draw a person to himself, we are to be a light to shine brightly and show the way. Our lives will only show the way when our light is not obstructed by sin. The keeper of the lighthouse had to make sure that the power source was in place to energize the light, and that the light was always clean so it would shine as brightly as possible. God's Holy Spirit, who dwells in us, is the power source, and living lives unobstructed by sin will ensure that our light is shining each day brightly. We do not need to make a lot of noise, or create a lot of fanfare in order to reach others for Christ. We just need to keep shining each day. Stand your ground just as a lighthouse is built on a solid rock foundation. Be unmovable in your faith, while being flexible in your love for others. Live a life that is holy, which means to be set apart from God for His service. It is then you will make the deepest impression on others. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Mark+4%3A21-22&version=NLT (Mark 4:21-22) Then Jesus asked them, “Would anyone light a lamp and then put it under a basket or under a bed? Of course not! A lamp is placed on a stand, where its light will shine. For everything that is hidden will eventually be brought into the open, and every secret will be brought to light.  As you ponder this nugget of wisdom for yourself, please encourage your friends and family to join us and then come along tomorrow for another day of ‘Wisdom-Trek, Creating a Legacy.' Murder in the name of God? When Paul came to Jerusalem, we knew it was only a matter of time before he would run afoul of the Jewish authorities. As we're reading Acts 23, now the Roman authorities are involved, too. And apparently the Sanhedrin despaired of winning their case at law, because some of them - more than 40 - planned to take matters into their own hands. But everything was in God's hands, as always. "The buck stops here." There's nowhere else for it to go. As Paul said goodbye for the last time to the overseers and shepherds of the church in Ephesus, he charged them - not some distant, religious bureaucrats - to guard their sheep from wolves. The government of the early church was simple, personal, and local. We're in Acts, chapter 20, overhearing the parting words of the great Apostle to some dear brothers. Today Pastor Jim will close his sermon, To Finish My Course - Paul. Paul knew he had started the last lap of his race. When Jesus had set His face toward Jerusalem, His disciples didn't understand what would happen there. When Paul started his final trip toward that same city, his disciples and friends knew it was a death march. And it was heartbreaking. "Believe whatever you like - as long as it doesn't affect my business!" Paul's attack on the goddess Diana, or Artemis, wasn't just a religious insult to the Ephesians; it must have wounded their civic pride - and most importantly, it was going to take food off their tables. Something had to be done! There was only one problem: Paul wasn't blaspheming their goddess. As we move forward in Acts 19, Pastor Jim opens a message called, To Finish My Course - Paul. Christ Lutheran Church in Webster Groves, MO

February 7, 2021. As we gather again for worship in our homes, Pastor Meagan reminds us how Jesus his took his ministry out of the synagogue and into homes. Readings: Isaiah 40:21-31, Mark 1:29-39 *** Transcript *** Last week the Gospel of Mark told us how Jesus got started in his ministry — the calling of the disciples, the proclamation that the realm of God is here, the amazement of the people at the authority Jesus carried in his teaching and the casting out of the unclean spirit. Jesus spent time in the synagogue and embodied, in what he said and did, the good news of God’s love, and claimed in his actions the authority of God, over and above the authority even of the temple. This week Jesus does something really awesome: he leaves the synagogue. And this feels significant, in this time when it has been almost a year since we have worshipped together in our sanctuary. I personally have worshipped from my guest room, my living room, my backyard, my parents’ back yard, my parents' living room. It's been almost a year of worshipping from homes, vacation places, and even once I think from a boogie board! As many times as I have heard this passage, the detail of Jesus leaving the synagogue and taking his ministry to Simon’s mother-in-law’s house has mostly escaped me. But this year, it seems like just about the most profound thing Jesus could have done as he began his ministry. A few years back, a Lakota elder shared with a group of United Theological seminarians that Lakota tradition teaches that our stories are rooted in place, not time. And according to that tradition, the valley below Fort Snelling, just blocks from Karen’s and my home in the Twin Cities, is the birthplace of creation — a sort of Garden of Eden. It is also the literal birthplace of many Lakota people whose mothers traveled days and weeks to get to that place so their children could be born there. No matter how much time passes, their stories and the story of creation itself are alive there in that sacred place. And in this experience of exile we have realized, if we didn’t before, the sacredness of our temple, our sanctuary where I now stand. So many of you have told me how much it means just to see our altar in my Zoom screen on Sunday mornings. We are all longing for the time when we can return to gathering in person here, hearing the organ live rather than via video, drinking coffee and eating meals together in our Fellowship Hall. If we didn’t know it before, we certainly know it now: our sanctuary is sacred space. And this week, Jesus leaves the sacred space of the synagogue. And the first place he goes, just as we did when we left our building behind, is home. Not his home, of course, but a home — the home of Simon’s mother-in-law. And Jesus’ ministry does not pause or end when he leaves the synagogue, but expands, as he continues to preach and heal and the word spreads of what he is doing. In a very real way, Jesus demonstrates for us that it is not just the synagogue that is sacred space. We who have celebrated communion in our homes, heard the word in our homes, blessed and celebrated community and even our furry family members in our homes, grieved the death of beloveds in our homes, know this. Home is sacred space, too. And still, before the end of that first chapter of Mark, Jesus moves again. After what must have been an exhausting day, as the people of town filled the small home seeking wisdom and healing, Jesus goes to find a deserted place where he could be by himself and pray. Even Jesus believed, as Isaiah so eloquently says, that “those who wait for the Lord will renew their strength.” I am probably not the only one feeling especially worn out these days. I am sure many of you are also done with COVID, ready to celebrate with abandon in this time when we're still called to care for one another with caution. In these days when we are often just one step ahead of weariness and exhaustion, how comforting it is to know that we are not alone — even Jesus needed God to renew his strength. When the disciples find Jesus, he doesn’t return to Simon’s mother-in-law’s house or to the synagogue, but moves onward once again. Sacred space, as Jesus shows us, is bigger than the temple, bigger than Simon’s mother-in-law’s house, bigger than the town, and Jesus’ ministry expands to neighboring towns. That too is sacred space. In fact, Isaiah tells us, there is no place that God isn’t. The God who created all things is present in all, to the very ends of the earth. One of the most sacred places I have ever had the privilege of being was the two-room home of a family in Tanzania, where we sat on bales of hay to eat homemade cakes and drink tea sweetened with rare and precious sugar, served by the mother of five whose face glowed with pride at having something to offer us. All places are sacred. Mark tells us that one of the things that happens in sacred places is healing. It's worth taking a moment to think about this, as Miss Kate talked about. We are painfully aware with over 400,000 having died from a pandemic that doesn’t seem to be done with us yet, although we are certainly done with it, and with the losses we have experienced in our own congregation and our own lives, that healing as we would wish for it doesn’t always happen. We know from our own experiences that sometimes mental and physical disease persist despite our best efforts. And that can leave us wondering where our healing, our miracle, our resurrection is. Mark starts his gospel by proclaiming the beginning of the good news of Jesus Christ. But sometimes, when brokenness seems to overwhelm, it can be hard to trust and believe that the good news of Jesus’ presence and healing is still happening today. We are part of this dynamic, transformative, and yes healing Spirit that is always moving and breathing around us. Do we believe that? Do we believe the sequel can happen? What does healing even mean? A colleague who lives with disabilities suggested that healing is not so much a restoration to wholeness physically, as if the person healed was not a complete or full human before, but a restoration to community, dignity, and agency. In the midst of the stories of healing in our gospels, Jesus so often not only offers physical healing, but raises people up, brings them back into community, names their humanity and their dignity. In today’s story, Simon’s mother-in-law is initially received as one who simply needs care, as an elderly widow who is in fact ill. Jesus goes to her, and yes he removes her fever, but the true transformation is a restoration to dignity and place in community that allows her to serve — to minister, as Jesus and the disciples did — as well as be served. The question of who receives healing, why and when, is one that we human beings have been wrestling with since the beginning of time, and we still wonder and ask and lament when healing doesn’t come as we hope. And yet, as Miss Kate suggested, the promise of God stands. In Christ, we know that even in the face of illness and suffering and death, God is present with us. In Christ, we are seen and known, our dignity as a child of God is assured, our lament is heard by a God who has experienced suffering and death for themselves. The ministry of Jesus expands again, and again, and again, all the way to the cross. And because of that we can trust that even our places of brokenness, loss, and death are sacred. All places, all time, all lives are sacred. And today, as we gather and worship together on our Zoom screens, we know that more than ever. Christ is present in the sacred space of our homes, bringing the good news of God’s love, restoring us to our community in sometimes surprising ways, lifting us up and renewing our strength when we are exhausted, naming us and calling us beloved, and sending us outward to discover and proclaim the sacredness of God’s presence in the places — and the people — around us. And when we come back to our sanctuary, and we will return, we will do so with great joy and celebration, knowing that that is only the beginning. Thanks be to God. *** Keywords *** 2021, Christ Lutheran Church, Webster Groves, sermon, podcast, transcript, Pastor Meagan McLaughlin, Isaiah 40:21-31, Mark 1:29-39, COVID-19, coronavirus, pandemic

Christ Lutheran Church in Webster Groves, MO

January 31, 2021. In Mark, the people are astounded because Jesus seems to carry an authority that they are not used to hearing. What does authority look like for us today? When was the last time you remember being astounded or amazed about something? Readings: 1 Corinthians 8:1-13, Mark 1:21-28 *** Transcript *** I called a family member recently, and we started our conversation in the way that we have repeated nearly every time we've talked recently. “How are you?” “Oh, you know. How are you?“ “Oh, you know. What’s going on?” “Nothing! Just hanging out here, nothing new!” “Yeah, same here, not going anywhere!” Sound familiar? It seems like all of us are feeling this a little bit. These many months of living in COVID have been wearing to say the least, and have left us all feeling perhaps a bit trapped. Perhaps a lot trapped, or bored, or lonely, eager for anything to do, anywhere to go, anyone to see. Someone recently described it as like living in the movie “Groundhog Day,” every day similar to the one before: get up, go to the kitchen, eat breakfast, go to the desk in the den and start work, maybe get kids started in school. Even our clothes may have fallen a bit into a rut — someone recently quipped that they now have a pair of sweatpants for each day of the week. In the meantime, the last few weeks, we have been watching as Jesus has begun his ministry. He was born, and creation itself revealed just how transformative his life would be. He caused his parents some angst when he disappeared for three days, grew in age and wisdom, and his parents pondered and wondered about what his life among us might mean. He went out and sought disciples, inviting them to come and see for themselves who he was, letting them know that he saw them for who they were, and calling them and us to freedom, transformation, and participation in the realm of God. And today, in our gospel reading from Mark, Jesus’ ministry is about to officially begin. In each gospel, the good news of Jesus’ first public ministry, his introduction to the people, is told a bit differently, and tells us something important about who Jesus was. In Matthew, we know early on that Jesus is Jewish, and he starts by preaching and healing, and the crowds quickly grow so big that he gathers with them on the mountains because so many are drawn to him. In Luke, who apparently believes in the call of the preacher to afflict the comfortable as well as comfort the afflicted, Jesus preaches his first sermon in his home synagogue in Nazareth, and people try to push him off the cliff! In John, Jesus turns water into wine at the wedding in Cana, showing that he is the son of God, but also very much a part of human life and celebration. The Gospel of Mark wastes no time. Jesus has called disciples to join him in his ministry, and today in the last verses of chapter 1, Jesus is in the synagogue teaching, and the people are astounded because he seems to carry an authority that they are not used to hearing. And then, Jesus casts out an unclean spirit, and the people are amazed once more at the authority that he has. Astounded. Amazed. Authority. By the end of chapter 1 of Mark, Jesus has already made quite an impression. When was the last time you remember being astounded or amazed about something? And then, there is the idea of authority. Mark tells us in this story of Jesus that people were amazed because of the authority Jesus had, both in his preaching and in the casting out of the unclean spirit. What does authority look like for us today? How do we know right from wrong, truth from untruth, authentic leaders from imposters? The information, misinformation, and intentional lies that flood our newsfeeds have made it harder than ever to know sometimes what is true and important, and what is not. And as the Corinthians faced their own confusion, Paul offered the Corinthians some guidance as they wrestle with how to live out their faith in Christ. Bringing together people of diverse backgrounds and religious traditions was challenging to say the least. In particular today, Paul discusses how to handle the confusion among believers in Jesus when some followed particular dietary guidance, some no dietary restrictions, and some feel newly freed from the rules they used to think were important. In the end Paul says, “We are no worse off if we do not eat, and no better off if we do. But take care that this liberty of yours does not somehow become a stumbling block to the weak.” Rather than being concerned that everyone follow particular dietary law, focus on doing what is best to support and love your neighbor. Don’t be so concerned about what you know or don’t know, Paul says. “Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up.” On this Reconciling in Christ Sunday, we among many other ELCA churches celebrate our commitment to welcome LGBTQIA+ people as they are: beloved children of God. And I think of how much debate, division, and damage has happened — and still happens even in Christian community — as people have debated and continue to debate the rightness, beloved-ness, and even the existence of people different from ourselves. Like Mr. Jesse said, welcome can be hard, right? But carried to an extreme, this desire to be right and pure has led to unspeakable tragedy. This week, we also honor International Holocaust Remembrance Day, when arguments of white, Christian, Eurocentric superiority were used to justify horrors that are almost unimaginable, including the death of over 600,000 Jewish people and many others who didn’t quite fit the mold. The evil behind this violence is still pervasive today, in the sins of racism, anti-LGBTQIA violence, anti-Semitism, and other ideologies that oppress, bind, and kill children of God. Paul seems to cut through all the confusion over what is right and wrong, who is in and out, and all the evil that can ensnare us, and offer Christ as our guide. Love for neighbor and the love of God, Paul tells us, is our authority. I had the opportunity this week to listen to a webinar called “Responding to Christian Nationalism,” in which our Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton and the Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, the Most Reverend Bishop Michael Curry, participated. What stood out to me from both of their sharing was two points: among all of the possible voices we can listen to, all of the beliefs we can hold, of all the ideologies we can trust, as Christians we are called first and foremost to be followers of Jesus of Nazareth. And in doing so, we are called to love and serve others without distinction, as God does for us. And back to Jesus of Nazareth in the temple. Approaching the person possessed by the unclean spirit was in itself quite an unusual thing. Most others around him would have been stepping away, distancing themselves from the unclean spirit that had invaded the temple. But Jesus doesn’t do that. Instead he steps toward the unclean spirit and speaks to it, commanding it to leave the possessed person so they could be free again. Rather than aligning himself with the authority and rules of the temple, Jesus embodies the authority of God’s heart in love and service to one in need. And the people took notice. They saw and felt the authority of God in Christ, and they were amazed! As we live our sometimes “Groundhog-Day-ish” pandemic lives, Christ is still among us. Jesus of Nazareth is calling us to follow him, and embody the authority not of knowledge but of the love of God in Christ. This is not easy — just when we think we've achieved this goal, we'll stumble again, and we'll need to hear one more time Jesus’ call to repentance, and Paul’s direction to let go of the knowledge that puffs up and allow love to build up the people of God again. Like Mr. Jesse said, belonging can be hard. Welcome can be hard. But this is what Christ calls us to. In a few minutes we'll have our Annual Meeting, a time to celebrate what God has been doing among us in the last year, and ask guidance from God for the year to come. So how have you been amazed by the Spirit of God at work among us? As our Council has spent time envisioning where God is calling us, we invite you to join us in pondering: how is God calling us in this next year to welcome and to serve? Jesus of Nazareth is calling us, inviting us to bring God’s love to our communities and the world. That amazing call is the only authority that we need. Thanks be to God. *** Keywords *** 2021, Christ Lutheran Church, Webster Groves, sermon, podcast, transcript, YouTube, video, Pastor Meagan McLaughlin, Deuteronomy 18:15-20, Psalm 111, 1 Corinthians 8:1-13, Mark 1:21-28, COVID-19, coronavirus, pandemic, RIC, Jesse Helton

January 3, 2021 | Pastor Nathan Elms On average, we have tens of thousands of thoughts a day, but we don’t register most of them. We tend to ignore the most repetitive, persistent thoughts, such as the ones that take us through our morning grooming ritual or our daily commute. What we do is so driven by habit that we don’t have to think ourselves through every step. To feel how this works, try brushing your teeth with your nondominant hand. Odd, right? In the same manner that we do not think about habitual actions... we have habitual thoughts, that we think about WITHOUT THINKING about it. • The thoughts you think WITHOUT thinking are who you are… • The thoughts you intentionally think are who you want to become... • We can think just like unbelievers… • We can respond to trouble just like unbelievers… • We can deal with pain just like unbelievers… In fact, re-forming how we think about things is one of the most important things about becoming a believer. 9 Biblical Truths 1. The Amazing Grace of GodTitus 2:11-15 https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Titus%202%3A11-15&version=NIV11 For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. 12 It teaches us to say “No” toungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this presentage, 13 while we wait for the blessed hope—the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, JesusChrist, 14 who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a peoplethat are his very own, eager to do what is good.15 These, then, are the things you should teach. Encourage and rebuke with all authority. Do not letanyone despise you.”Bottom Line for this message” Grace has a Face”Verse 1111 For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people.1. First, the use of the word “for” connects this verse to the previous verses. Because we are therecipients of God's grace and salvation, we should reflect the values and engage the behaviorsthat Paul promoted in verses 2-10.Paul previously discussed preaching, leadership and teaching, all of which is important to the Christianlifestyle (making disciples who make disciples), but what God does in verse 11 can be summed up in onework: GRACE2. What is grace?1. Many say “unmerited favor” or “God's favorable attitude towards us”, but these definitionsare too abstract relative to this verse. Websters has several definitions, but Websters doesn'tdefine Grace for us, God does. The grace of God is an ACTION, not an ABSTRACTION. It's a PERSON, not a CONCEPT.1. Grace is an actual event in space and time. Grace has a face – Jesus ChristScarred, bloody and in agonyA face of the person that suffered and died on the cross for your sins and mineA face of grace- bringing salvation to all people3. Grace isn't cheap…it comes at such a great cost, but our modern theology sometimesattempts to cheapen it by offering people what Dietrich Bonhoeffer called “cheap grace”:Cheap grace is: the preaching of forgiveness without requiring repentanceBaptism without church disciplineCommunion without repentanceAbsolution without personal confessionOne thing that I believe has made Grace appear cheaper is the modern American church.- Modern American church grace says: “all are welcome. Come as you are. The coffee's on us, sitback and relax…and don't worry about changing. We couldn't ask you to do that. We don't wantto offend you.”- Grace says: “all are welcome. Come as you are and be prepared and willing for God to changeyou. Because when you recognize the true cost of grace, you recognize that it is a debt that youcannot pay, and you are compelled to change…out of gratitude. You will have to die to yourself.Be prepared to sacrifice parts of your sinful lifelstyle that the world accepts, and says it's OK, butGod doesn't.”Galatians 5:24 https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Galatians+5%3A24&version=NIV24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.Grace says “I created man and woman”. Modern American grace says “it's all good…whatever you wantto be. God probably made a mistake” in an effort to avoid looking intolerant.God says “I created marriage between a man and a woman”. Modern American grace says “it's allgood…marry who you want. Who are we to judge? Besides, our numbers are low”.God says “I knit babies together in their mother's wombs”. Modern American grace says “It's a woman'sbody and she has right to choose”. Who are we to judge?Bonnhoeffer went on to say:“Costly grace is the treasure hidden in the field; for the sake of it a man will go and sell all that he has. Itis the pearl of great price to buy for which the merchant will sell all his goods. It is the kingly rule ofChrist, for whose sake a man will pluck out the eye which causes him to stumble; it is the call of JesusChrist at which the disciple leaves his nets and follows him.”“Such grace is costly because it calls us to follow, and it is grace because it calls us to follow Jesus Christ. It is costly because it costs a man his life, and it is grace because it gives a man the only true life. It iscostly because it condemns sin, and grace because it justifies the sinner. Above all, it is costly because itcost God the life of his Son: "ye were bought at a price," and what has cost God much cannot be cheapfor us. Above all, it is grace because God did not reckon his Son too dear a price to pay for our life, butdelivered him up for us. Costly grace is the Incarnation of God.”Dietrich Bonhoeffer, The Cost of DiscipleshipIt's not popular to say that Jesus is the only way to God. Modern culture and theologies…even some inthe Christian Church…see this as too narrow and restrictive, intolerant and unloving. But to say there aremany ways, makes no sense, and stands in the face of the sacrifice of true Grace.God would not have sent His only Son to die on a cross if He could have saved us by any other means. No Grace would mean no salvation. If there were a bunch of ways to get to heaven, then why did Christdie? When Jesus was praying in Luke 22:42https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Luke+22%3A42&version=NIV"Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done."Basically asking…if there's any other way. God didn't say, “well, actually there are a thousand ways, butI'm going to make you go through this anyway”. Just No.Grace has a Face. The face of JesusGalatians 2:21 https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Galatians+2%3A21&version=NIV21 I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died fornothing!”Back to Verse 1111 For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all peopleWhat is salvation? While sometimes in the Bible, salvation is being saved from one's enemies, in the New Testament, itrefers more to end of time events…God's judgement. Salvation, in this sense, is being saved from God'sperfect judgement…through His perfect GRACE- Grace makes all people savable – every sin of every person has it's answer in Jesus.- “Every person who ends up in hell steps over a blood-stained cross with their name on it to getthere”Grace has a Face…the face of Jesus. The face of salvation.1. Grace TRAINS us. (verse 12)12 It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright andgodly lives in this present age,1. Grace doesn't flatter us…it teaches us…it trains us-It doesn't tell us all is well, but speaks bluntly, directly and lovingly-for our own good.Titus 2:12 puts an end, once and for all to any theology that separates salvation from the demands ofobedience to Jesus Christ.-Grace teaches us that our lifestyle is suicidal…not in a worldly way, but in an eternalway.-Grace teaches us what we need to do, and what not to do in order to change.-Grace educates us, trains us and to reform and transform. God expects us to go in anew direction when we experience His Grace…His Son…His salvation. If you have you accepted His Grace…His son, and have not been changed, maybe you didn't.-Grace trains us to live better lives according to God's standards and priorities and notour own.-Our works become the natural response to HIS works- Grace teaches us to live a certain kind of life, to live in a particular way, and defined byparticular character qualities.1. Develop self-control2. Live uprightly3. Live Godly lives…for NOW, not for some other place and time, but for here and now. What does that training look like?1. Sometimes it looks like Divine discipline – sometimes it's difficult circumstances.Hebrews 12:7-11 https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Hebrews+12%3A7-11&version=NIV7 Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplinedby their father? 8 If you are not disciplined—and everyone undergoes discipline—then you are notlegitimate, not true sons and daughters at all. 9 Moreover, we have all had human fathers whodisciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father ofspirits and live! 10 They disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for ourgood, in order that we may share in his holiness. 11 No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful.Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained byit.- If you feel that the circumstances of life are stretching you beyond what you think you canbear, or beyond what you want to bear, it may well be the Grace of God training you.Like a serious workout at the gym…it hurts, and isn't pleasant at the time. But if werecognize it as Grace and embrace it for what it is, then it will have that amazingstrengthening, fruit-producing effect.Embrace it…embrace the training of GraceHOW?1. Training requires some degree of cooperation or response on our part.Anyone who has been to the gym or worked with a trainer understands that you can't just showup for training and watch the trainer do all the work and somehow benefit from it. You have toactively engage and actively participate if you expect to be changed by it.2. We have to deny ourselvesThe first step is self-denial.You can't train for a marathon without first denying various habits and behaviors in your lifethat would get in the way of you preparing for the race….like diet and lots and lots of running.Training in grace is like training for a marathon- you have to say NO to several things as a firststep, in this case: 12 It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passionsUnGodliness – Whatever actions or attitudes undermine God's centrality in your life (Ifit makes God marginal, it is ungodly)…like cheap American Christian Church Grace.Godliness is having a regard for God's glory and God's will in every aspect of our lives, doing everything out of reverence and love for Him.Worldly Passions – The result of a hungry soul that doesn't have God at the center.Anything that steals your focus away from God…like maybe politics?Saying NO is not a one-time thing. It's an ongoing part of training. We're called to take up our cross, the cross of self-denial every day.Count the cost of what training will require.Luke 14:28 https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Luke+14%3A28&version=NIV28 “Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won't you first sit down and estimate the cost to see ifyou have enough money to complete it? 29 For if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it,everyone who sees it will ridicule you, 30 saying, ‘This person began to build and wasn't able to finish.'2. Grace is POWERFUL-Just as God redeemed Israel from Egyptian bondage, so too the Son of God redeems, withgreat power, a new covenant people from bondage to lawlessness and sin. Only the Grace of God,through the death of His Son can redeem from lawlessness, can liberate from sin and can set the captivesoul free. Nothing else will…nothing else can.Jesus described the reason for His coming in this way:Mark 10:45 https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Mark+10%3A45&version=NIV45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom formany.”Paul described it this way…2 Corinthians 5:21 https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=2+Corinthians+5%3A21&version=NIV21 God made him who had no sin to be sin [a] for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness ofGodGrace has the power to conform us into the righteousness of God2. Grace teaches us to WAIT for what we hope for…to wait expectantly for His coming13 while we wait for the blessed hope—the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, JesusChrist,-Waiting sometimes seems passive, like we are not doing anything, but Biblically speaking, waiting is notpassive…it's ACTIVE- Waiting in this sense draws us forward into action, rather than causing us to relax- Like a bridegroom waiting for his bride, there's nothing passive about waiting if the focus ofyour wait is your primary desire. It's important to realize that there is a profound difference between passive waiting and active waiting.Passive waiting can take the form of cynicism, complaining, or simply doing nothing.Active waiting, however, is a posture that seeks to cultivate habits that are focused on intentionalpreparation. It is a blessed hope because unlike every other hope we might have, it cannot be disappointed….Jesus iscoming back.We are waiting for “the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ”.Are you waiting on the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior? If you are excitedly waitingfor Jesus to come, your waiting looks like preparation. Your preparation looks like fruit. If you're notprepared, and not bearing fruit, then what are you waiting for??(Grace is Powerful) (Grace teaches us to actively wait)2. Grace is PURIFYING14 who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that arehis very own, eager to do what is good.-It cleanses, washes and renews: The death of Christ cleanses us-It purifies our hearts by faith and our lives by the Holy Spirit.Proverbs 25:4 https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs+25%3A4&version=NIVRemove the dross from the silver, and a silversmith can produce a vessel; The Refiner's fire is purifying: When precious metals are refined the impurities (dross) must first beremoved. These pollutants are burned away as the metals are subjected to intense heat. As a result ofthe refining process the craftsman is given pure silver to work with as he crafts the metal into a beautifulmasterpiece. Without first removing the dross, the precious metal would be unworkable. Thesilversmith knows when the silver is pure because he can see his reflection in it.Have we allowed God to purify us through His grace? Can He see His reflection in our lives?3. Grace is POSSESIVEVerse 14 …to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.-Kind of paradoxical – even though grace is incredibly generous, it is also tremendouslypossessive…even jealous. He PURCHASED us. To PURIFY us to POSSESS us…literally for Himself.…a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.1 Peter 2:9-10 https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1+Peter+2%3A9-10&version=NIV9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's special possession, that you maydeclare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. 10 Once you were nota people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you havereceived mercy.-When Grace comes into your life, it takes over…it buys you and makes you its own. That's avery good thing…that's SALVATION.-When you encounter the Grace of God…the cross of Christ, you are no longer your own, but Hisown possession. Grace is possessive because it is costly. It cost God the life of His only Son.1 Corinthians 6:19-20https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1+Corinthians+6%3A19-20&version=NIV19 Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you havereceived from God? You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with yourbodies.Grace appeared at the climax of history through the death of Jesus Christ on the cross, but Grace isalways there for us in the continual self-giving of the Son, like a steady, never-ending stream.-Have you embraced Grace, and all He provides and requires?-Am I now living a life defined by Grace? - You will know by the fruit.- God's Grace appears in verse 11, and God's glory appears in verse 13. The grace that has appearedspeaks of His first coming, and the Glory that will appear speaks of His second coming.4. God's Grace teaches us who is LordGod's Grace teaches us what we should learn15 These, then, are the things you should teach. Encourage and rebuke with all authority. Do not letanyone despise you.”1. Learn doctrine…these are the things you should teach – refers to the entire letter-a letter filled withsound teaching2. Learn duty…encourage with authority. Go alongside and challenge in the way we should all live as welook for “the blessed hope”.3. Learn discernment: if “encourage” speaks to us about the way we should go, “rebuke” admonishes usconcerning the way we should NOT go. When we confront or correct, we do so with all authority. Wedon't compromise…Grace cost too much to compromise.4. Learn dedication: Speaking the truth will not always be popular, but it will always be necessary. It willrequire courage, conviction, the confidence of Christ – and will always require love as it's foundation. This will enable you to humbly stand tall, refusing to be intimidated by Christ's opponents. In this, youwill not let anyone disregard or despise you.Don't worry about the nay-sayers. Be above reproach and love them. (Like Paul and Timothy)Recap1. Grace isn't cheap. Don't treat it cheaply and don't represent it as cheap. That's false teaching.Grace Christian Fellowship –the sign says: “Love God, Love People”. We love God, and we lovepeople because we so strongly desire to show people the true Grace of God through Jesus Christ. That tells peoplethe message is more important than the brand…that love is more important than a logo…that the objective is more important than opticsthat it's better to be a hospital for the lost, than a country club for the savedthat Grace itself is precious…that time here is short, but eternity isn't…that conviction is more important than comfortwe can't say “we're good”, when we know we're all badGrace is costly. Grace is Honest. And Grace is redemptivebut at the same time, any of this done without love is worthless2. Let Grace train you…like a marathon.  Sunday, September 13Forgiving people is hard work!  As Pastor Rob reflects on the parable of the unforgiving servant (Matthew 18:21-35), he unpacks some of the particular challenges in forgiving people. Why do we forgive people then?  First, as Jesus reminds us, NOT forgiving people is even harder!Second, we’ve been claimed by God and grafted into the family of God…and this family has a particular business, namely, forgiveness.  Fortunately, Jesus challenge to invite people 77 times isn’t a sales quota for forgiveness, but an invitation to turn to him for the strength, wisdom and compassion to forgive others.

Have you ever felt like diving into Scripture was either too intimidating or boring because “been there, done that”? Well, our guest Meghan Larissa Good has been there too, and she joins Elisa and Eryn to offer tangible ways to explore the big story Scripture tells.  Bio of guest:  Meghan Larissa Good teaches at Trinity Mennonite Church in Glendale, Arizona, and has degrees from Gordon College, Duke Divinity School, and Portland Seminary. She is also an author; and her most recent book, The Bible Unwrapped, helps make sense of the big story Scripture tells and how that story impacts us today.  Notes and Quotes:  Jesus as a companion means always having a friend with you. He is real and accessible. Meghan’s Scripture practice: Sitting with Scripture and writing down questions, observations, and even prayer. Think about the purpose each story represents. If you find yourself in a prayer rut, introduce Scripture to help you pray with a new outlook. “The Bible is not mechanical. What we are hearing is a narrative of God’s engagement with people.” The Bible is not meant to be intimidating. It’s meant to be dug into; and it’s an invitation to be romanced by what Jesus wants to teach you. “I think people have a lot of fear of getting it (the Bible) wrong, and this feels like a high- stakes thing to get wrong. Like, ‘What if I get God wrong? What if I get God’s desire wrong?’” The plotline of the entire Bible is summed up in this: “God is remaking the world and bringing all broken things back together.” The Bible is a window, not a mirror. “It’s a means, not an end.” We look through Scripture, not at it. If we treat it like a mirror, we are doomed. If we look at it like a painting, we are missing the point. “Sometimes we feel like we have to be a certain way, look a certain way, or act a certain way to be used by God. But His continual pursuit for our heart shows us that we don’t have to be anything other than exactly what we are.” “The Christian life is not about being right, it is about being love.” Links/Books/Resources Mentioned In Show:  Show Notes on godhearsher.org God Hears Her website: https://www.godhearsher.org/ Share the love by giving this episode a 5-star rating on iTunes!  https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/god-hears-her-podcast/id1511046507?utm_source=applemusic&utm_medium=godhearsher&utm_campaign=podcast Order God Sees Her: 365 Devotions for Women by Women on Amazon.  https://amzn.to/32lYSgh Order Meghan’s book The Bible Unwrapped on Amazon. https://amzn.to/31plYDu Read the Discovery Series booklet The Greatest Story Ever Told. https://discoveryseries.org/courses/the-greatest-story-ever-told/ Elisa’s Instagram: elisamorganauthor Eryn’s Instagram: eryneddy Verses Mentioned in Show:  Syrophoenecian woman: Matthew 15:21–28  https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew+15%3A21-28&version=NIV

September 13, 2020. In Matthew 18, Jesus tells his disciples that they are to forgive not just seven times, but seventy-seven times. This morning, Pastor Meagan preaches on the challenges of forgiving. Readings: Genesis 50:15-21, Romans 14:1-12, Matthew 18:21-35 *** Transcript *** In the 12-step community, step 9 is the process of making amends — going to those that we've harmed and doing what we can to make things right. As we do this, we often discover that the people we have harmed may also have harmed us, leading us to hold those resentments close. This can make acknowledging our own part in what happened in our relationships very hard to do. After all, who wants to admit that we did something that hurt someone, when what they did seems so much worse? The process of sweeping our side of the street, so to speak, is often long, sometimes taking years. As we think about letting go of our own resentments and making amends for what we have done, often sponsors will suggest that we divide our list of people to whom we owe amends into three parts: those to whom we're ready to make amends, those to whom we're willing to consider making amends, and those to whom we are convinced we will never, ever, ever make amends. The harm they have done to us feels insurmountable. Once the lists are made and the process of making amends begins, we set aside that third list. We start with the first one, and we slowly work our way toward healing and strengthening our relationships, asking God to guide that process. Over time, we find ourselves dipping into the second list, those to whom we were willing to consider making amends. We have experiences of asking for forgiveness, and forgiving ourselves, and we begin to trust this process of letting go of past wrongs. And often, sometimes when we least expect it, we realize to our surprise that one of those people who was on our third list has moved over to the second. We find ourselves willing to consider forgiving, and acknowledging our own part, to someone we never thought we could possibly forgive. This 12-step wisdom teaches us that forgiveness is not a quick and easy thing. Like Jesse said, there are so many things that can make this a challenging and complicated process. Letting go of what someone else has done, and acknowledging our own mistakes, and taking care of ourselves, and holding good boundaries takes a lot of time. This is not something we expected, or decided, or chose necessarily, but often it becomes something that happened to us, when God stepped in. And this, I believe, is the main gospel we receive from our readings today. We know from these scriptures that this wisdom is far from new. Joseph was attacked by his brothers. They considered leaving him for dead, and then sold him into slavery, where he lived for years. When they stand in front of him in today’s reading from Genesis, we are told that when his brothers ask his forgiveness, and he gives it, Joseph cries. He claims God’s work in the healing that's happened in his life, and is happening in his brothers' lives. Yes, they intended harm, and they did it, Joseph tells them. And God transformed it. It didn’t happen overnight. It happened over years, as Joseph faithfully followed the path God laid out for him. Jesus tells his disciples that they are to forgive not just seven times, but seventy-seven times. In Jewish tradition, seven is the number of completion, of wholeness. Seventy is the number of wholeness times ten, the number of commandments — and we know from our own Lutheran teaching that none of us are capable on our own of keeping those commandments. We try, and we fail. And grace enters in. I like to say that the reason Jesus tells his disciples to forgive seventy-seven times, not just seven, is that he knew that’s what it would take. Over and over, asking for help, taking the step, falling, and starting over again, until we are complete. Whole. And through it all, as Paul tells the Romans, we belong to God. Whether we live, or whether we die, we belong to God. Last week, love — not love that comes easily, but love that takes time and commitment and work, and ultimately is impossible without God. This week, forgiveness. In the end, it’s all about relationships, with ourselves, with others, and with God. Jesus embodies and teaches God’s wisdom for our life in community, and it’s so core to who God is that it even shows up in the way Jesus taught us to pray! “Forgive us, as we forgive others.” And as beloveds who belong to God, we learn that God forgives us, we come to forgive ourselves, too, and understand how connected we are with all of our fellow humans. When I have struggled to forgive, one of the most powerful ways I've learned to invite God in is to pray the Prayer of St. Francis. You might be familiar with it — “Make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred, let me bring love. Where there is injury, pardon. Where there is doubt, faith.” At a time when I had to frequently encounter people by whom I felt wounded, I would take the time to pray this prayer, for them, and for myself, by name. Asking God to love me and love through me, because I was empty. Asking God to bring healing for my woundedness, and in the process, seeing their woundedness as well. Claiming the faith of God, for them and for myself. I had long drives at that time, and sometimes I would find that it had taken me the entire drive — nearly two hours — just to get through the prayer. So this morning, I invite you to call to mind someone for whom you would like to pray, someone for whom you feel ready to pray. If you think of someone who you realize is on your third list, that list of people who you will never be ready to forgive, it's okay to set them aside for today. Pick someone else. So having in mind this person that you're ready to pray for today, we will pray the St. Francis Prayer together for them, for ourselves, and for each other. So, take a breath and let us get ready to pray. Lord, make me a channel of Your peace, not mine, with my siblingWhere there is hatred in me and around me, fill me with your love, and let it overflow so that it surrounds my siblingWhere there is injury in me and around me, fill me with your healing and forgiveness, and let it overflow so that your healing and forgiveness surrounds my siblingWhere there is doubt in me and around me, fill me with your faith, and let it overflow so that your faith surrounds my siblingWhere there is despair in me and around me, fill me with your hope, and let it overflow so that your hope surrounds my siblingWhere there is darkness in me and around me, fill me with your light, and let it overflow so that your light surrounds my siblingAnd where there is sadness in me and around me, fill me with your joy, and let it overflow so that your joy surrounds my siblingGod, Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled by my sibling as to console themTo be understood by my sibling, as to understand them;To be loved by my sibling, as to love them; For it is in giving that we receive, it is in forgiving that we are forgiven,And it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life.  Amen. *** Keywords *** 2020, Christ Lutheran Church, Webster Groves, sermon, podcast, transcript, YouTube, video, Pastor Meagan McLaughlin, Genesis 50:15-21, Romans 14:1-12, Matthew 18:21-35, Jesse Helton

August 30, 2020. When Moses sees the burning bush and hears the voice of God, he is told to remove the sandals from his feet, for the place on which he is standing is holy ground. Today, God is calling us too. And Pastor Meagan reminds us that, like Moses, we too are standing on holy ground. Readings: Romans 12:9-21, Matthew 16:21-28, Exodus 3:1-15 *** Transcript *** In case you haven't already figured it out from the children's sermon, I love going barefoot. The first thing I do when I enter my house is I take off my shoes and socks, so I can free my feet to feel the hardwood floor as I walk. And when we bring the cats out in the backyard, I go barefoot unless the wood and stone are hot enough to burn my feet. I love feeling all the different textures — the smooth wood of the deck and stairs, the knobbly cement and stone of the patio, the tickly grass between my toes, and the air and sun playing on them as we sit. There's something really grounding for me about going barefoot. It helps me to feel connected somehow, to the world around me and to the god who created it all. And being grounded, I can be ready to start a new thing: ready to learn, ready for things like Sunday School and Confirmation and Adult Forums to begin for the year. Ready perhaps to hear God, like Moses did. We all know Moses’ story. He was a Hebrew, and he should have been murdered by the midwives, because Pharaoh had ordered them to murder all the Egyptian boys. But they saved him. Because those midwives, Shifra and Puah, they didn’t follow the law of Pharaoh. They followed the law of God. So Moses lived, and was taken in to be raised in Pharaoh’s house, as an Egyptian. For some years he doesn’t realize who he is, and when he does, he can’t take the pain of his people. In a moment of anger and grief, as he witnesses yet another injustice, he murders an overseer and then runs for his life. In one sense, Moses creates a great life for himself. He finds community, he marries, he tends his father-in-law’s animals. But in another sense, Moses has lost a great deal. He is cut off from his people, and his history. Even God. Then Moses sees the flame in the bush and he hears the voice, “Remove the sandals from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground!” He takes off his shoes, and he walks closer to the bush, and he is grounded again. God reminds Moses of who he is, and who his people are. God tells Moses who God is: I am. The one who has always been, the God of all Moses’ ancestors, the one who created all things, the one who is in that moment alive and present in the flame in the bush in front of Moses. Not just I was, or I will be, but I am. And God tells Moses that he hears the cries of the Hebrew people, of Moses’ people, and that he always has. Moses couldn’t bear the pain, but God can, and does. And he calls Moses to return, promising to be with him, to give him the words he needs to speak, to claim God’s justice for his people. In spite of his fear, his uncertainty about his abilities to take on this task, perhaps his shame about how he'd failed before, Moses goes. Not just I was, or I will be, but I am. Throughout history, God has always heard God’s people. God heard the Hebrew people. God heard the cries of Rizpah: the sons she had with King Saul had been murdered, and she stood watch mourning and wailing for months until they were buried. Mary, Jesus’ mother, claims that God has heard her, and not only her, but the cries of all who suffer. Not just I was, or I will be, but I am. In Stand Your Ground, the book about the history and pain of white exceptionalism and faith that a group of us at Christ Lutheran are reading together, author Kelly Brown Douglas writes, “In telling his poignant story of life in a concentration camp during the Jewish Holocaust, Eli Wiesel recalls ‘a most horrible day, even among all of those other bad days,’ when he witnessed the hanging of a child . . . . Wiesel heard a man cry out, ‘For God’s sake, where is God?’ To that question, Wiesel said a voice inside him answered, ‘Hanging from this gallows.’ ” And this, as Moses learns, is where God always is, when people are in pain. God hears the cries of all of those wounded by the systemic racism in our communities. God heard the cries of Emmett Till, Trayvon Martin, Sandra Bland, Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, and just this week in Kenosha, Wisconsin, Jacob Blake, who was severely injured in a shooting. God heard the cries of several others who were shot by a white supremacist while calling for justice in Kenosha. God heard the cries of the more than 180,000 who have died from COVID-19 now, and he hears the grief of those who loved them, and those who are still struggling to recover from being ill. God hears the cries of those who have lost loved ones, and homes, and jobs, to the devastating wildfires in California. God hears the pain of those recovering from the destruction of the storms in Iowa, and the catastrophic hurricanes that have borne down on communities in the Gulf. God hears the cries of all the officers in the police and military, who face daily the pain and struggle of our community. God hears the cries of those who are unemployed, or not paid adequately, who can't feed and clothe and house themselves and their children. God hears the anguish of those living with mental illness and addiction, isolation and loneliness, and the despair of their families. And then, family of faith, God sends us. But not without preparing us for the work ahead. God teaches us who God is — the god who is always present, the god who hears people's cry. God teaches us how to live in community. Moses is sent with Aaron, and we are sent with one another. Paul, in the letter to the Romans today, talks about persevering in faith when our life together is hard, and loving our enemies in concrete ways, making room for God to be God in our lives and in the world. And as we see with Peter today in our gospel from Matthew, knowing that we will make mistakes, God continues to teach us. God reminds us that no matter what, above any nation, state, or flag, it is God who made and sustains us, our faith in God that guides us, and Christ whom we follow. As people of faith, every year we come together for Sunday School, Confirmation, Adult Forums, Bible Studies, so we continue to ground ourselves and learn more about our God. Hearing Moses’ story reminds me that we, like Moses, are standing on holy ground. God is calling to us too, and is right in front of us. Taking off my shoes, reading passages of scripture, lighting a candle, can all help me to remember that I am on holy ground. How do you “holy ground” yourself, so that you can hear God’s voice? *** Keywords ***2020, Christ Lutheran Church, Webster Groves, sermon, podcast, transcript, YouTube, video, Pastor Meagan McLaughlin, Romans 12:9-21, Matthew 16:21-28, Exodus 3:1-15, Whirl Story Bible, coronavirus, pandemic

Hello, my friend, I am Guthrie Chamberlain, your captain on our journey to increase Wisdom and Create a Living Legacy. Thank you for joining us today as we explore wisdom on our 2nd millennium of podcasts. This is Day 1435 of our Trek, and it is time for our 3-minute mini trek called Wisdom Unplugged. This short nugget of wisdom includes an inspirational quote with a little bit of additional content for today's trek. Consider this your vitamin supplement of wisdom for today. So let's jump right in with today's nugget: Today's quote is from  John R. W. Stott, and it is:    Grace is love that cares and stoops and rescues.      Grace Is…Complete and sufficient grace can only come from God. This does not mean that humankind is incapable of at least a measure of grace to all others. Since God created us to be bearers of His image, we can show and extend grace, even to those who may not deserve it, and to those who do not show mercy to us. God shows us grace because of His love for us, not because of our love for Him. It is because God loves us so much that He stooped down to earth and became a human so that we could be rescued through the sacrifice of Christ's death, burial, and resurrection.  As God's image-bearers, we must show our love to others even when they are unlovely. This love can be shown by stooping down to tangibly rescues others that are in need. We are all created by God, and none of us should ever think we are better than others. We need to understand it is only by God's grace that we can live in such a manner that we can help others. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Romans%205%3A8&version=NLT (Romans 5:8) But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=2+Corinthians+5%3A21&version=NLT (2 Corinthians 5:21) For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin,[https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=2+Corinthians+5%3A21&version=NLT#fen-NLT-28859a (a)] so that we could be made right with God through Christ. That's a wrap for today's Wisdom Unplugged quote. Understanding Scripture and its teachings can often be confusing, and even unsettling. Even when we try to interpret certain stories or letters charitably, we can frequently find ourselves bewildered. How do we deal with these difficult passages? This week, Vince and Jo consider a question about Jesus' interaction with the Canaanite or "Syrophoenician," woman (recorded in Matthew 15:21-28 and Mark 7:24-30), where Christ refers to a suffering woman and the Canaanite people she is part of as "dogs." How can we make sense of such seemingly harsh words and treatment? How do we square this with a Christ we say is full of love for the downtrodden? What is going on in this story? Is Jesus racist? Question Asked in This Episode: "For quite some time now, I've been developing a workshop that focuses on improving race relations within the church. As the workshop primarily focuses on Scripture in the Bible that deals with how God wants us to think about and to respond to racism, classism, and sexism, among other things, there is one passage that continues to perplex me as I study these topics: In Matthew chapter 15 verses 21-28—the story of the Syrophoenician woman—even though Jesus compliments her amazing faith, at face value it can appear as if he is also insulting and making racial slurs against her when referring to his own people, Israel, as children, and the woman's people as dogs." An hour after you win the Lifetime Achievement Award, your wife reminds you it's trash night. So often, after our "mountaintop" experiences, we're dropped deep into the valley. It happened to Elijah after his glorious win on Mount Carmel, and it happened to Jesus after the Mount of Transfiguration. When we had to break yesterday, Jim had told us that the first feature of the Kingdom is the King, in all his glory. He'll share the second feature today. We're in Matthew 17 for the finale of the sermon, Jesus Predicts Messiah's Future. We can understand how the Disciples would think that, once they had linked up with Messiah, it would be champagne and roses from here on out. Jesus had a shocking surprise for His elite dozen: The path to glory goes through the grave - for Him, and for them, as well. They would all have to "man up" for the dark days ahead, and Christ had a short time to prepare them. As we leaf through the Gospel of Matthew we want to linger a while in Chapter 16. Today we launch a new sermon by Jim called, Jesus Predicts Messiah's Future. Father Josh answers questions about fear of the Lord, explaining transubstantiation to children, and whether a grandparent should secretly baptize their unbaptized grandchild. Glory Story (2:49)  Feedback (6:32) Baptizing a Grandchild (11:15) Hi Fr. Josh! Thank you so much for your priesthood and your ministry via this podcast. It has been so encouraging to me and many friends too!  Here’s my question—my oldest daughter is married to a very nice Jewish man and now has a one year old baby boy. For a while she was attending a nondenominational church but now is not going to church at all, and they have not baptized the baby. I asked her once if she would consider baptism, and she said she would think about it. That was months ago, and she hasn’t brought it up again. Do you have any suggestions for how I can encourage her to come back to church and baptize the baby? My husband and I are heartbroken about this. A friend said I should take some holy water and baptize the baby myself the next time I go and see them. Should I consider doing this? I would appreciate any words of wisdom you might have. - Shannon Fear of the Lord (19:35) Hi Fr. Josh! I’ve always wondered about verses in the Bible which discuss fearing the Lord. For example, the Bible references that we’re “fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139:14) or that the “fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom” (Proverbs 111:10). To me, the word “fear” doesn’t seem like a word we should use when describing who God is or how we should feel towards Him. Can you help a girl out? You’re DA BOMB! - K-Dawg Explaining the Eucharist to a Child (23:43) My son is 6 years old and wants to be a priest when he grows up. He absolutely loves all things regarding the Church and especially our priests. Today at Mass he asked me about consuming Jesus. He sort of understands that the bread and wine turns into the Body and Blood of Jesus but how do I explain to him that this miracle is not “disgusting” but a beautiful opportunity he will be able to receive next year? I believe it is the Body, Blood, soul and Divinity of Christ but how do I explain to a 6 year old (or a 14, 9, and 4 year old) that this is not cannibalism but a miracle? I hope this question makes sense. Thank you Fr. Josh, I have learned so much from your podcast about our beautiful faith. I am always praying for you and welcome your prayers for myself and my wonderful children I have been blessed with. - Christina Resources:  Preorder Pocket Guide to Adoration by Fr. The Lectionary readings for this Sunday all pointed me to the same thing -- Identity! How does any of us know who we are? We see how fragile our identity is when others doubt us or try to define us. Our faith calls us back to our core identity rooted in our Love Creation in God. These is what we discuss in this sermon. Jesus has given us the power and the authority over all the powers of Satan and his demonic forces. New Hope UMC Sunday Sermon Podcast

This Sunday, October 21, we will continue our sermon series "A Grace-Full Life." The companion book is still available to purchase this Sunday. God's grace comes to us in four movements: *"Even There, Even Now, Even More, and Even Then;"* that is, prevenient grace, justifying grace, sanctifying grace, and glorifying grace. It all about living our God's all-reaching, soul-saving, character-shaping, never-ending love. We'll look this week at Justifying Grace, which is the moment we step over the line of faith in Jesus Christ and receive the free gift of salvation. To be prepared read [Romans 3:21-24, 1 John 4:9-10, 2 Corinthians 5:21, 6:1-2](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Romans+3%3A21-24%2C+1+John+4%3A9-10%2C+2+Corinthians+5%3A21%2C+6%3A1-2&version=NLT) Subscribe to our Sunday Morning Sermons on: - Apple Podcasts: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/new-hope-umc-sunday-sermon-podcast/id1093524425?mt=2 - Stitcher Radio: http://www.stitcher.com/s?fid=87782&refid=stpr - Google Play: https://play.google.com/music/m/Ijonx62ajd5qwxv3qgxkizdqnva?t=New_Hope_UMC_Sunday_Sermon_Podcast - Website: http://www.findnewhope.com/ - Donate via PayPal to support the podcasts and the Technical Arts Ministry of New Hope! https://goo.gl/o2a9oU - Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/brandonchurchfl - YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/user/fumcmedia - Vimeo: http://vimeo.com/findnewhope - Google+: http://plus.google.com/+Fumcbrandon/
