Welcome to Day 1689 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me.This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to WisdomDo It and Say Nothing – Daily WisdomWelcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps. Wisdom is the final frontier in gaining true knowledge. We are on a daily trek to create a legacy of wisdom, seek out discernment and insights, and boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Hello, my friend; this is Gramps. Thanks for coming along on today's trek as we increase Wisdom and Create a Living Legacy. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs%2016%3A16&version=NLT (Proverbs 16:16) How much better to get wisdom than gold, and sound judgment than silver!  We are on Day 1689 of our Trek, and it's time to explore another nugget of wisdom, which includes an inspirational quote along with some wise words from Gramps for today's trek. If you apply the words you hear today, over time, it will help you become more healthy, wealthy, and wise as you continue your daily trek of life. So let's jump right in with today's nugget: Today's quote is from Unknown, and it is: A fool tells you what he will do; a boaster what he has done. The wise man does it and says nothing. Do It and Say Nothing This quote certainly sums up most of humanity. We all know people who continually tell us of their grand plans and what they plan to accomplish. Somehow though, they never seem to get around to doing much of anything. Yet others do achieve some things, and you certainly know all about what they have done. But, unfortunately, they are the type who love to blow their trumpet loud and long to make sure that everyone knows what they have done. Others don't say much and don't draw attention to themselves, but you see the fruit of their efforts when you observe their quiet lives. They accomplish much, and it is usually for the benefit of others. This last type of person is indeed the wise ones. They realize and understand that we are here to accomplish God's purpose with our lives. They would rather God receive the glory due him, and not themselves. Be like this third person. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs%2012%3A23&version=NLT (Proverbs 12:23) The wise don't make a show of their knowledge, but fools broadcast their foolishness. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs%2013%3A16&version=NLT (Proverbs 13:16) Wise people think before they act; fools don't—and even brag about their foolishness. As you ponder this nugget of wisdom for yourself, please encourage your friends and family to join us and then come along tomorrow for another day of ‘Wisdom-Trek, Creating a Legacy.' We learn from the order of The Lord's Prayer that Jesus saw prayer as worship. And one significant key to learning to worship in Spirit and truth (https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=John%204%3A23-24&version=NIV (John 4:23-24)) without imaginative meditation on biblical images and phrases. Jesus's I AM phrases in the Gospel of John are such images and phrases. When we use our imagination to meditate on these images and phrases, we'll experience how powerful worshipful meditation can be in our lives. Have you tried it? Let's do it in this podcast episode using these images of Jesus as the I AM in John.   John 6:16–20 NIV 16 When evening came, his disciples went down to the lake, 17 where they got into a boat and set off across the lake for Capernaum. By now it was dark, and Jesus had not yet joined them. 18 A strong wind was blowing and the waters grew rough. 19 When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus approaching the boat, walking on the water; and they were frightened. 20 But he said to them, “It is I; don't be afraid.” (Literally in the Greek: “I am; don't be afraid.”) John 8:24 ESV “I told you that you would die in your sins, for unless you believe that I am he you will die in your sins.” (Literally in the Greek: “...believe that I am you will die in your sins.”) John 8:28–32 NIV 28 So Jesus said, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he and that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me. 29 The one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, for I always do what pleases him.” 30 Even as he spoke, many believed in him. 31 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (Literally in the Greek: “...then you will know that I am and…”) John 8:58–59 ESV 58 Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.” 59 So they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple. John 18:4–8 NIV 4 “Who is it you want?”  5 “Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied. “I am he,” Jesus said. (And Judas the traitor was standing there with them.) 6 When Jesus said, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground.  7 Again he asked them, “Who is it you want?” “Jesus of Nazareth,” they said. 8 Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he.” (Literally in Greek in all three occurrences it's just “I am.”) Follow Dave Cover on Twitter https://twitter.com/davecover (@davecover) Follow A Bigger Life on Twitter https://twitter.com/abiggerlifepod (@ABiggerLifePod) This podcast is a ministry of https://www.thecrossingchurch.com/ (The Crossing), a church in Columbia, Missouri, a college town where the flagship campus of the University of Missouri is located.  Like this content? It's a conspiracy that increases my faith in the gospel. I'm amazed at how often we see the Bible's one story threaded all throughout Scripture, but written centuries apart. This one story of the Bible, written over a period of 1,500 years by more than 40 different authors, most of whom never even knew each other, is a conspiracy indeed, but not of humans. It's a conspiracy of the Holy Spirit. Telling ultimately one amazing story of God becoming the perfect human King in order to restore https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Genesis%201%3A26-28&version=NIV (his plan for his humanity) to rule and care for and continue his work of creation. A world exploding with the beauty and glory and wonder of God, that rejoices in and reflects his glory and love and beauty and goodness and wisdom and faithfulness. I want to be in THAT story! And to be in that story we must learn to worship God in the Spirit and truth (https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=John%204%3A23-24&version=NIV (John 4:23-24)). And a great place to worship in the Spirit and truth of this incredible story is in Isaiah 11, written centuries before Jesus was born. Let's talk about it and worship together in this episode! Isaiah 11:1–9 ESV 1 There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit. 2 And the Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD. 3 And his delight shall be in the fear of the LORD. He shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide disputes by what his ears hear, 4 but with righteousness he shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth; and he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked. 5 Righteousness shall be the belt of his waist, and faithfulness the belt of his loins. 6 The wolf shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat, and the calf and the lion and the fattened calf together; and a little child shall lead them. 7 The cow and the bear shall graze; their young shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. 8 The nursing child shall play over the hole of the cobra, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the adder's den. 9 They shall not hurt or destroy in all my holy mountain; for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD as the waters cover the sea. Do You Find It Hard to Worship? | Psalm 95

Do you find it hard or even awkward to worship God? The truth is it's easier than you think. You just have to choose to do it. Worship is a choice. In fact, it must always be a choice. God never coerces our worship. Jesus said in https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=John%204%3A23-24&version=NIV (John 4:23-24) that God seeks true worshipers. In other words, God wants you to choose to worship him by your own free will. C.S. Lewis wrote that https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/799916-i-think-we-delight-to-praise-what-we-enjoy-because (in commanding us to glorify him, God is inviting us to enjoy him). Worshiping the true God is the most important ingredient to experiencing and enjoying God. You'll never be happy if you don't learn to worship God. And Psalm 95 is a great place in the Bible to learn how.  Psalm 95 ESV 1 Oh come, let us sing to the LORD; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!  2 Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise!  3 For the LORD is a great God, and a great King above all gods. 4 In his hand are the depths of the earth; the heights of the mountains are his also.  5 The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land.  6 Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the LORD, our Maker!  7 For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. Today, if you hear his voice,  8 do not harden your hearts, as at Meribah, as on the day at Massah in the wilderness,  9 when your fathers put me to the test and put me to the proof, though they had seen my work.  10 For forty years I loathed that generation and said, “They are a people who go astray in their heart, and they have not known my ways.”  11 Therefore I swore in my wrath, “They shall not enter my rest.” Follow Dave Cover on Twitter https://twitter.com/davecover (@davecover) Follow A Bigger Life on Twitter https://twitter.com/abiggerlifepod (@ABiggerLifePod) This podcast is a ministry of https://www.thecrossingchurch.com/ (The Crossing), a church in Columbia, Missouri, a college town where the flagship campus of the University of Missouri is located.  Like this content? What About the God of Vengeance? | Psalm 94

Worshiping God means worshiping him for who he really is. Our lives become more anchored horizontally when we anchor them vertically to the true God. Worshiping God in Spirit and truth, as Jesus puts it in https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=John%204%3A23-24&version=NIV (John 4:23-24). But if you read through the Psalms, you'll soon run into Psalms like Psalm 94 that talk about God being a “God of vengeance.” We relatively comfortable moderns have a particularly hard time with this view of God. How could God be loving and be a God of vengeance? But most Christians in the world throughout history would have the opposite problem: “How could God be loving and not judge all this evil?”  In her excellent book, https://www.amazon.com/Confronting-Christianity-audiobook/dp/B081S7C287/ref=sr_1_2?crid=CEEKTDPODASX&dchild=1&keywords=confronting+christianity+by+rebecca+mclaughlin&qid=1619019028&sprefix=confronting+Christianity%2Caps%2C186&sr=8-2 (Confronting Christianity), https://www.thegospelcoalition.org/profile/rebecca-mclaughlin/ (Rebecca McLaughlin) writes: “The idea of the wrath of God seems alien to us—a psychologically damaging relic from a bygone era. But just as we cannot absolve people of moral accountability without also erasing their ability to love, so God's love and God's judgment cannot be pulled apart. Think of the anger you feel when you see school children shot, women raped, or people beaten because of the color of their skin. Think of your anger at the slave trade, the Holocaust, and global sex trafficking. When you analyze that anger, its root is love. ...And the more we love, the more easily our anger is kindled. We rush to defend our children from the least attack because we love them: anyone who harms them inspires our fury. ...Imagine that this kind of love-motivated anger is so deeply entrenched in the heart of God that your own commitment to justice is like a drop in the ocean.” But this Psalm turns it back on ourselves and helps us see God's grace in our lives to transform us out of evil into his blessing. Psalm 94 ESV 1 O LORD, God of vengeance, O God of vengeance, shine forth!  2 Rise up, O judge of the earth; repay to the proud what they deserve!  3 O LORD, how long shall the wicked, how long shall the wicked exult?  4 They pour out their arrogant words; all the evildoers boast.  5 They crush your people, O LORD, and afflict your heritage.  6 They kill the widow and the sojourner, and murder the fatherless;  7 and they say, “The LORD does not see; the God of Jacob does not perceive.”  8 Understand, O dullest of the people! Fools, when will you be wise? 9 He who planted the ear, does he not hear? He who formed the eye, does he not see?  10 He who disciplines the nations, does he not rebuke? He who teaches man knowledge—  11 the LORD—knows the thoughts of man, that they are but a breath.  12 Blessed is the man whom you discipline, O LORD, and whom you teach out of your law,  13 to give him rest from days of trouble, until a pit is dug for the wicked. 14 For the LORD will not forsake his people; he will not abandon his heritage;  15 for justice will return to the righteous, and all the upright in heart will follow it.  16 Who rises up for me against the wicked? Who stands up for me against evildoers?  17 If the LORD had not been my help, my soul would soon have lived in the land of silence.  18 When I thought, “My foot slips,” your steadfast love, O LORD, held me up.  19 When the cares of my heart are many, your consolations cheer my soul. 20 Can wicked rulers be allied with you, those who frame injustice by statute?  21 They band together against the life of the righteous and condemn the innocent to death.  22 But the LORD has become my stronghold, and my God the rock of my refuge.  23 He will bring back on them their iniquity and wipe...

April 1, 2021. Today as we celebrate Maundy Thursday, we come together to carry on the sacred traditions that have been handed down to us. Readings: Exodus 12:1-14, 1 Corinthians 11:23-26, John 13:1-17, 31-35b *** Transcript *** What traditions or wisdom have been handed on to you? I learned how to make popcorn from my grandmother. Use a big pan — the kind with two handles on it — and put in just enough oil to cover the bottom. Add exactly three kernels of popcorn, put it on medium heat on the stove, and when the third kernel pops add the rest of the popcorn. Shake occasionally. And when the popping slows, remove from the heat. And when all the popping has stopped — not before — pour the popcorn into the bowl. Add real melted butter and salt. Don’t skimp. Over the years, I have tried many ways of making popcorn, from air poppers to oil poppers to kettle corn makers and even microwave, and none have ever measured up. A big part of it is the taste, of course. But more important than that is the connection that I feel to my grandmother. Sure, I use olive oil instead of Wesson oil, and Kosher salt instead of regular table salt. But in all essentials, each time I make popcorn on the stove, I'm participating in what my grandmother handed on to me. What has been handed on to you? Jesus knew the hour had come for him to depart from this world, that this was the last time he would sit with his disciples and share a meal. It was his last opportunity to hand on his most sacred thoughts before he died — to show them, and us, what is really important. Today we celebrate Maundy Thursday, and so we begin the most sacred days of the Christian church year. This is a time set aside for us as a community to remember. We have come before our God, acknowledged our sin, and received God’s love and forgiveness. And now we begin this journey. Over these days, we remember the extravagant, redemptive, love of God for us and for all of creation revealed in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. And today, we remember what our dear friend, Jesus, handed on to us in the hours before he died. Jesus and his friends were preparing to celebrate Passover, to remember how God had saved them and guided them in the desert. They were following an ancient command that had been handed on to them to tell and retell the story of how God brought them out of slavery and led them through the unknown, to freedom. Jesus wants us to remember, too. In this last year we have been on a journey into the unknown together, far more than we anticipated when John Hoffmann and I distributed ashes in my first worship service with you all. It has been a sort of exile, our own time in the desert in many ways. And it has been an invitation to explore what is means to be church, and how God is calling us to minister together from here. What traditions and ways of being are serving God well, and what we need to let go of, so we can better contribute to the Kin-dom of God. As we approach the end of the voluntary physical exile from our buildings and one another’s physical presence, these questions are all the more important. Tonight, for one of the few times in over a year, I have three of you with me seated in the pews of the sanctuary. And this is just the start our return to being together in person. We have learned a lot, this last year, about what is possible when we put our minds together. We've committed ourselves to being accessible to one another and our community through technology we never considered before — some of you had never heard of Zoom before March 22, 2020! We’ve discovered in new ways that we, the followers of Christ, are the church. We're renewing our commitment to welcome and to serve, and we're exploring what that looks like for all of our ministries. And in truth, that is what Christ was doing: welcoming his friends by serving them a meal — we love doing that don’t we, and we will do it again — and serving, kneeling to wash his friends’ feet. How will we live into Christ’s call to welcome and serve, as we journey on into 2021? Times of transition call us to these questions, and Jesus wants us to remember that we are not alone. God freed the Israelites, and guided them every step of their way. God frees us from all that enslaves us, and guides us on our way. The command to remember has been handed on for centuries, and it is ours now. Jesus wanted us to know this. Our journey in COVID that is finally beginning to evolve into something of a new normal, like the journey in the desert, can feel dry and long and lonely sometimes. Jesus wanted his friends to know that in spite of what would happen later tonight — later that night — and tomorrow, the next day — no matter how much grief and despair they would feel, Jesus’s death would not be the final word. In times like this, with so much division, hatred, and fear in our world, including a pandemic that has gone on far longer than we would have guessed last March, we need to know that God can bring life out of death. We need to know that God is with us — even, and perhaps especially, when things are at their darkest. Jesus tells us to share the Eucharist as a remembrance of his death and the promise of resurrection. And every time we celebrate the Eucharist, Jesus shares his very life with us. We are nourished, body and soul, as our bodies are fed and our spirits are filled again with the promise of life and forgiveness. This promise has been handed on to us. After Jesus and his disciples had finished eating, Jesus knelt down and washed the feet of his disciples. It was, of course, an act of humility and service. But more than that, washing another person’s feet is incredibly vulnerable, intimate, and full of love. Jesus was telling his friends, “I know you. I know those parts of you that you keep hidden. I know your dirt, your sweat, your warts, your pain, your exhaustion. And I love you.” There is no part of you that God does not know, intimately. And there is no part of you that God does not love. And here is the most remarkable thing about Jesus’ act of intimate love: Jesus washed the feet of not only John — who will stay at Jesus’ side, holding Jesus’ mother while he dies — but all of the disciples. The ones who will abandon him. Peter, who will deny he even knew Jesus. Even Judas, who will betray him, turn him over to be tortured and killed. God knows us intimately, and loves us fully, even when we abandon and deny and betray God, and one another. And then Jesus says, “For I have set you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you.” We are called to know and love one another that way, actively, humbly, intimately. We are called to see one another’s warts, and love them. We're called to allow God, and others, to see our warts, and love us. We are reminded of the waters of our baptisms, and the promise of God’s radical, unconditional love and forgiveness. Be vulnerable to one another. Love one another, no matter what. This vulnerability is terrifying... and it is precisely how God heals and frees us to be the people we were created to be. And how God works through us to heal and free others. This kind of love cannot be contained. It must be handed on, and on, and on. Today we come together to carry on sacred traditions handed on to us, and as happens each time I make my grandmother’s popcorn, we are carried beyond ourselves, beyond this moment in time. This is about us, but it's not just about us. As we share the Eucharist, and tell the stories, we are profoundly connected to God, and to our whole Christian family going back generations. We remember who we are, who we're called to be, as children of God. This is what has been handed on to you. How will you hand that on to those coming after us? *** Keywords *** 2021, Christ Lutheran Church, sermon, podcast, transcript, YouTube, video, Pastor Meagan McLaughlin, Maundy Thursday, Exodus 12:1-14, 1 Corinthians 11:23-26, John 13:1-17, 31-35b, COVID-19, pandemic, coronavirus

What are you going to do about your problem? You know...the Big one? The problem that's so big we seldom talk about it is death - but that's only terrifying because of what comes after it: the Judgment. Welcome to Day 1618 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me.This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom.A Flock of Egos – Daily WisdomWelcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps! Wisdom is the final frontier in gaining true knowledge. Our mission is to create a legacy of wisdom, seek out discernment and insights, and boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Hello, my friend; this is Gramps. Thanks for coming along on our trek to increase Wisdom and Create a Living Legacy. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs%2016%3A16&version=NLT (Proverbs 16:16) How much better to get wisdom than gold, and sound judgment than silver!  Today is Day 1618 of our Trek, and it's time for another nugget of wisdom, which includes an inspirational quote along with some wise words from Gramps for today's trek. If you apply the words you hear today, over time, it will help you become more healthy, wealthy, and wise as you continue your daily trek of life. So let's jump right in with today's nugget of wisdom: Today's quote is from Walter F. Light, and it is:  ‎Leadership is getting a flock of egos to fly in formation. A Flock of Egos You have probably heard it said that when trying to organize people that it is like herding cats. If you have ever tried to herd cats, you know that it is virtually impossible to do so. So it is with leadership, especially when you are a leader of leaders. It is the art and science of getting the massive egos of leaders to all head in the same general direction. Managing leaders is not an easy task to accomplish, but it is possible if the overall vision and mission are strong enough. Since you are dealing with competing egos in this situation, there has to be enough commonality in the mission to satisfy the team's combined ego. It is somewhat similar to a flock of geese where there is a defined order within the group, all moving in the same direction, but allowing the lead person to switch out as needed to create the best possible forward motion to a destination.  Yes, there will be a lot of honking and noise within the flock, but as long as each member can be part of the overall objective, it is possible to have successful leadership. It has to be clear that division within the group is not beneficial.  So it is with the building of God's kingdom on earth, we must be unified and have a clear focus on what is most important. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Mark+3%3A23-27&version=NLT (Mark 3:23-27) Jesus called them over and responded with an illustration. “How can Satan cast out Satan?” he asked. “A kingdom divided by civil war will collapse. Similarly, a family splintered by feuding will fall apart. And if Satan is divided and fights against himself, how can he stand? He would never survive. Let me illustrate this further. Who is powerful enough to enter the house of a strong man and plunder his goods? Only someone even stronger—someone who could tie him up and then plunder his house. As you ponder this nugget of daily wisdom yourself, I would ask you to please encourage your friends and family to join us and then come along tomorrow for another day of ‘Wisdom-Trek, Creating a Legacy.' If you would like to listen to any of our past 1617 treks or read the Wisdom Journal, they are all available at Wisdom-Trek.com.  I encourage you to subscribe to Wisdom-Trek on your favorite podcast player so that each day will be downloaded to you automatically. Thank you for allowing me to be your guide, mentor, and most importantly, I am your friend as I serve you through this Wisdom-Trek podcast and journal each day. As we take this Trek of life together, let us always: Live Abundantly (Fully) Love Unconditionally Listen Intentionally Learn Continuously Lend to others Generously Lead with Integrity Leave a Living Legacy Each...

January 3, 2021 | Pastor Nathan Elms On average, we have tens of thousands of thoughts a day, but we don’t register most of them. We tend to ignore the most repetitive, persistent thoughts, such as the ones that take us through our morning grooming ritual or our daily commute. What we do is so driven by habit that we don’t have to think ourselves through every step. To feel how this works, try brushing your teeth with your nondominant hand. Odd, right? In the same manner that we do not think about habitual actions... we have habitual thoughts, that we think about WITHOUT THINKING about it. • The thoughts you think WITHOUT thinking are who you are… • The thoughts you intentionally think are who you want to become... • We can think just like unbelievers… • We can respond to trouble just like unbelievers… • We can deal with pain just like unbelievers… In fact, re-forming how we think about things is one of the most important things about becoming a believer. 9 Biblical Truths 1. October 4, 2020 | Pastor Nathan Elms What do we mean by Apostolic? I believe I have some credibility when I say that the defining element of the Apostolic movement is zeal for the Lord... Your strength is often also your weakness... We have done some harm by being zealous in a less than temperate way... as pastors, as parents, as soul- winners... Medicine is such a respectable profession today... But this wasn’t always so… There were honorable physicians among the Jews, but the writings of the rabbis include this line: “The best among the physicians are destined for hell.” And so, in the Mishnah, physicians are listed among the “trades of robbers.” If a doctor wanted to cheat you... there would be very little you could do about it. The Hippocratic Oath bans doctors from poisoning their patients. Strange. But consider the Romans...Romans hated their doctors. Rome’s first official physician, Arcagthus, was given the nickname Carniflex, meaning executioner. Roman physicians were, however, expert poisoners, and Roman doctors were routinely hired by persons of high standing to kill other persons of high standing. Yet Jesus chose healing, more than anything else, as a sign of his deity... Matthew 4:23-24 https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew+4%3A23-24&version=MSG Mark 1:32 https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Mark+1%3A32&version=MSG Mark 5:23 https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Mark+5%3A23&version=MSG Matthew 8 tells four stories of healing that teach us a lot about Jesus’ healing ministry: 1. The first story shows us that it’s God’s will for people to be healed. 2. In the second story, the centurion, a man in authority, figured out that Jesus was a middleman acting on behalf of a higher commander. 3. The third story happens during lunch on a Sabbath day at Peter’s home. It illustrates that Jesus simply responded to people in need. He always met needs. 4. The fourth story is about what happened later that same day when those in a large crown were all healed. The fact that the crowd was all healed demonstrates that there are no reasons or excuses that limit healing. It also shows that there is no limit to what the anointing can do! The result is that Jesus is known for all ages as the Great Physician. Jesus entered an ugly world... and made it beautiful. Jesus entered the ugly history of religion... and made it beautiful. Jesus chose the ugly profession of the physician and made it beautiful. It isn’t just the patient that needs healing... it is the doctor too... The Doctor cannot heal him or herself... fix him or herself... Everything that humanity does is marked by the flaws of humanity itself... Remember how I mentioned the zeal that is in the Apostolic movement... I’ve seen terrible excesses of zeal... you probably have to... But God leaves his mark upon history by taking ugly things and making them beautiful.

September 27, 2020. We are all being transformed, called to humbly embody God’s justice for all of creation, one action at a time. And actions speak louder than words. Readings: Exodus 17:1-7, Psalm 25:1-9, Philippians 2:1-13, Matthew 21:23-32 *** Transcript *** As I reflected on our readings this week, and the story that Alena shared of the Archangel Michael, the phrase “actions speak louder than words” kept echoing through my head. The parable Jesus tells his listeners describes one son saying he won't do something his father wants him to do, and then thinking better of it and doing it anyway, and the other son saying of course he would help, and then choosing not to. It’s pretty clear in the end who did what their father asked of them. What each of them said in this parable is not nearly so important as what they did. Michael too, in Alena’s story, went beyond words and took action, and stood against the evil of Lucifer. Actions speak louder than words. I thought of the classic 1988 movie “Working Girl” — starring Sigourney Weaver as Katharine, a high-powered executive woman, and Melanie Griffith as Tess, her new and naïve employee. Tess finds out how true it is that actions speak louder than words. Katharine sounds so supportive, promising to present Tess’s innovative ideas for consideration. And then she comes back to tell Tess that her ideas had been rejected. But Tess finds out later that Katharine lied — Tess’s ideas were approved, but Katharine took credit for them. Katharine said one thing, and did another thing entirely, and her actions definitely revealed far more of who she was than her words had. I’m sure we can all think of times in our own lives when someone said something, perhaps believing deeply they were speaking the truth and that they would keep their promise, but like the situation with Katharine and Tess, what actually happened didn’t match their words at all. As an LGBTQIA person, I have learned that the words “all are welcome,” far from being the end of a conversation, are not enough on their own, and that hearing stories about commitments kept and actions taken that show how a community lives into that promise is far more revealing. Actions speak louder than words. Perhaps like me, you yourself may have said you would do something, and not done it. It’s easy, isn’t it, to blame the religious leaders in today’s tale, laying responsibility solely at the feet of the Sadducees? But the truth is we’ve all been there — perhaps truly wanting to make the commitment we are giving voice to, perhaps wanting to say the thing we know we should say, maybe if we’re honest wanting to look better than our sibling who has just told our parent, “No!” It’s one thing, isn’t it, to say that we’ll do something, or that we believe something, and quite another to put those words and beliefs into action. Debie Thomas, in her entry for this week on her blog “Journey with Jesus,” says this: "We are meant to be uncomfortable, to be confronted, to ask ourselves: which son am I? Am I the child who makes promises I fail to keep? Am I the daughter who talks the talk, and sincerely believes that my sacred-sounding words are enough? Am I the son who doesn’t see repentance as a lifelong business, a business that didn’t end at the altar call, or the confirmation service, or the baptism, or the newcomer's class at church, that first drew me to Jesus?" Actions speak louder than words! And action, people of Christ, especially action that meets criticism and judgment by the world around us, is not easy. It is slow, hard work that results in change. Ruth Bader Ginsberg said, “Real change, enduring change, happens one step at a time.” And lack of action, we know, can do immeasurable harm. It's how Nazism rose in Germany. Inaction contributed to slavery lasting for 400 years on this continent. And inaction allows for the wounds of racism, violence, poverty, and homelessness to continue in our country today. It is why someone could shoot Breonna Taylor, in her own apartment and — as we found out this week — not be charged. Edmund Burke said, “All that is required for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing.“ Action — and sometimes inaction — speak louder than words. At times, we say the “right thing” and do the “wrong thing,” and at other times we say the “wrong thing” and do the “right thing.” Debie Thomas continues: "Or am I the son who says the wrong thing, but finally repents and obeys, anyway? The child who might not sound all spiritual and sanctified, but still does the work of love and mercy when the rubber meets the road? The daughter who recognizes that God is still at work, here and now, doing new things, transformative things, salvific things? The son who changes his mind when new truth, new life, new possibility, and new hope, reveal themselves?" Our reading from the letter of Philippians today is all about transformation. Jesus, out of radical, reckless, love, offers himself completely to God, and to us. And the promise Paul shares with us is that Jesus’ supporting act of surrender changes us, too. We are empowered to not only speak justice and mercy and truth, but live it out, the way Jesus did, in actions as well as words, as Alena suggested. With Jesus, we can face the evils of this world like the Archangel Michael did, and not turn away. For us as humans, on our own, this is not possible. In our reading from Exodus, we hear that one more time, the Israelites are struggling to trust that they will be OK, and one more time, God shows them that God will provide what they need to take the next step — this time, by bringing water from a stone. God provides for us, too. Putting our faith into action is not about our own strength, or earning our place with God, but about being transformed by God, turning outward to think of God, others, and creation, before ourselves, trusting as Paul says, that God is at work in us. Actions speak much louder than words. More in these days than ever it seems, it is so important to remember how much damage inaction can do. We are all being transformed, called to humbly embody God’s justice for all of creation, one action at a time. Each day we can ask, “What am I being called to do? How can I embody God’s love and justice, for my neighbor, for my community?” And when we're unsure of what to do, or afraid, God has shown that they will guide us and provide what that need — perhaps even sending angels to walk with us on the way. With the psalmist, we can pray: “To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul. O God, in you I trust; do not let me be put to shame. Lead me in your truth, and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation.” Thanks be to God. *** Keywords *** 2020, Christ Lutheran Church, Webster Groves, sermon, podcast, transcript, YouTube, video, Pastor Meagan McLaughlin, Exodus 17:1-7, Psalm 25:1-9, Philippians 2:1-13, Matthew 21:23-32, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transexual, queer, questioning, Alena Horn

Acts 4:23-3The Believers Pray for Boldness23 After they were released, they went to their friends[a] and reported what the chief priests and the elders had said to them. 24 When they heard it, they raised their voices together to God and said, “Sovereign Lord, who made the heaven and the earth, the sea, and everything in them, 25 it is you who said by the Holy Spirit through our ancestor David, your servant:[b]‘Why did the Gentiles rage,    and the peoples imagine vain things?26 The kings of the earth took their stand,    and the rulers have gathered together        against the Lord and against his Messiah.’[c]27 For in this city, in fact, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel, gathered together against your holy servant[d] Jesus, whom you anointed, 28 to do whatever your hand and your plan had predestined to take place. 29 And now, Lord, look at their threats, and grant to your servants[e] to speak your word with all boldness, 30 while you stretch out your hand to heal, and signs and wonders are performed through the name of your holy servant[f] Jesus.” 31 When they had prayed, the place in which they were gathered together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God with boldness. The Believers Share Their Possessions32 Now the whole group of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and no one claimed private ownership of any possessions, but everything they owned was held in common. 33 With great power the apostles gave their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all. 34 There was not a needy person among them, for as many as owned lands or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was sold. 35 They laid it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to each as any had need. 36 There was a Levite, a native of Cyprus, Joseph, to whom the apostles gave the name Barnabas (which means “son of encouragement”). 37 He sold a field that belonged to him, then brought the money, and laid it at the apostles’ feet.

Want to join our 4-week Zoom Bible Study, "Are we living in the end times?" (https://info.thecrossingchurch.com/zoom-online-bible-studies) . We start Friday April 3 from 12:00-12:30 with a 15-minute Q&A afterward. "I think that's a sobering description of why people walk away from Jesus. It's not that people become angry with him, or they feel like he's failed them. It's not that, again, they don't have an intellectual reason to follow Jesus anymore." God offers hope, love, comfort, salvation, and all sorts of amazing things through his son. So why do people reject Christianity and walk away? Find out in this episode as Learning to Follow Jesus (https://www.thecrossingchurch.com/podcast-series/how-to-follow-jesus/) by learning from one of the scariest verses in the Bible. There was a "swordfight" in the Temple! The sword of the Spirit is the Word of God, and the learned theologians were about to wish they had never tried to cross swords with Jesus! When they attacked, He came right back at them, expertly wielding the Scriptures they thought they knew so well. Imagine watching this showdown for the heart of Israel. The 3 synoptic Gospels - Matthew, Mark and Luke - are similar. But today we'll look at some material unique to Matthew. As we re-live history from a Disciple's perspective, we've come through the gates of Jerusalem in the manner, and on the exact date, prophesied. Just a few days from now the religious leaders will take drastic steps to solve their "Jesus problem." Right now we live in the tension of this moment, between Palm Sunday and Good Friday. We'll be in Matthew 21, after Jim opens with a story. Daniel prophesied the exact day that Messiah would come. We should know that date, and more importantly, the nation of Israel should have known that date. The clock started when a Persian king gave the decree to rebuild Jerusalem. And exactly 483 years later, all of Israel should have been looking for their King. Only one person in history could have fulfilled that prophecy. Here's Jim in Matthew 21. Before they were called Christians, believers were derided as "Nazarenes." Many saw them as a breakaway sect of Judaism. Matthew argues that Jesus had not preached anything contrary to Jewish law - as prescribed by God. Rather, He had fulfilled Hebrew prophecy. A son or daughter of Abraham who found the Messiah wasn't a former Jew, but a "completed Jew," to use a modern term. We studying the first Gospel with Pastor Jim. This year we decided to have a little church fun. With Halloween in our sights we had a dress up and costume Sunday. Since how we dress is an expression of our identity - that is what the sermon focused upon. Lots of biblical imagery using the connection of clothes to our identity. The Galatians reading encourages us to "clothe ourselves in Christ." Listen to the fun and meaningful messages. (Matthew 22:33)Upon seeing that their political and theological opponents were stumped, the Pharisees got together and put one expert of the law to test Jesus with a question.  He asked, "Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the law?"   (Matt 22:36)  Jesus gave my favorite reply to all the many questions he was asked here in Matthew 22.  Here's the Topher summary of what Jesus said in just seven short words.  The Son of God basically said, "Loving God and Loving People fulfills everything."(summary of Matthew 22:37-40, see also Deuteronomy 6:4-6 for the quote in the Old Testament)This Tuesday, we could do no better than to focus the truth that Jesus shared on a Tuesday so long ago.  Friends, simply endeavor to Love God and Love People today.  You'll be glad you did. credit: from www.churchpop.comClick the logo below and subscribe to automatically receive these Podcasts every weekday morning on Google Play Music or iTunes.   Message Minutes are sponsored by  Washington Church of Christ and recorded for the public 107.9 The Memories WAMW morning radio program.  They air at approximately 7:35am on Weekday Mornings. To find more of the Message Minutes that have been uploaded to this blog CLICK HERE.  To subscribe to a Message Minute podcast feed on iTunes or other podcast player, copy the following URL into your subscription list.http://feeds.feedburner.com/topherwiles/MessageMinute
