Welcome to Day 1706 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me.This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to WisdomA Good Life – Daily WisdomWelcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps. We are on Day 1706 of our Trek, and it's time to explore another nugget of wisdom, which includes an inspirational quote along with some wise words from Gramps for today's trek. Wisdom is the final frontier in gaining true knowledge. We are on a daily trek to create a legacy of wisdom, seek out discernment and insights, and boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Hello, my friend; this is Gramps. Thanks for coming along on today's trek as we increase Wisdom and Create a Living Legacy. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs%2016%3A16&version=NLT (Proverbs 16:16) How much better to get wisdom than gold, and sound judgment than silver! If you apply the words you hear today, over time, it will help you become more healthy, wealthy, and wise as you continue your daily trek of life. So let's jump right in with today's nugget: Today's quote is from Unknown, and it is: A good life is when you assume nothing, do more, smile often, dream big, laugh a lot, and realize how blessed you are. A Good Life For most of us, our lives are overflowing with abundant blessings. We may not have much in the way of wealth, but that is not very important. Today's quote is a recipe for living a good life. Live life each day with a forward-thinking mindset, while realizing life does not always turn out as planned. Work hard and often smile at the small blessings each day. At the same time, dream big about all your tomorrows. Finally, make it a habit to laugh often, even if sometimes it is at the silly things you do. If you incorporate this advice into your life, you will realize how very blessed you are. Life is too rich and often too short to be miserable. Live life fully acknowledging all that we have been blessed beyond our wildest imaginations. To do otherwise is to rob yourself of the real pleasures and treasures of life. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Ecclesiastes+5%3A18-19&version=NLT (Ecclesiastes 5:18-19) Even so, I have noticed one thing, at least, that is good. It is good for people to eat, drink, and enjoy their work under the sun during the short life God has given them, and to accept their lot in life. And it is a good thing to receive wealth from God and the good health to enjoy it. To enjoy your work and accept your lot in life—this is indeed a gift from God. We've all made bad decisions. Some of those bad decisions come back to haunt us, and some decisions we thought were good at the time end up having nasty consequences. Oftentimes, those moments lead to regret, and many of us struggle to move past our big mistakes. In this “best of” episode of God Hears Her, Eryn and Elisa revisit a conversation with humorist Liz Curtis Higgs as she shares how we can find freedom from the past and hope for the future. About our guest: Liz Curtis Higgs describes herself as a former “bad girl” who met Jesus and is no longer defined by her mistakes. She's a best-selling author and well-known speaker, and she wrote the foreword for the best-selling devotional from Our Daily Bread Ministries titled God Sees Her. Liz currently lives with her husband, Bill, in their Kentucky home. Notes and Quotes: “I have no comfort zone. I will tell anybody anything if it will point them to the grace of God.” “They saw past all the ick and said, ‘At the heart, she is a woman that needs to know Jesus,' and so they just loved me right into the kingdom.” “God and His faithfulness waited.” “We all found ways to numb the pain of not being part of the right crowd and created our own crowd.” “For me, I am a girl who likes community, and I wanted that above all.” “When it says in Scripture, ‘He gives you the desires of your heart,' it doesn't mean He gives you every little thing your heart desires; it means He places in your heart the desires He would have for you.” “Some of it He dealt with honestly very quickly. . . . That is what I needed. Everybody is different. Some of us are weaned off the old life, and that doesn't mean that you didn't hear the Lord correctly or you're disobedient.” “The path for each of us is so unique; the Savior, though, is one and the same.” “We all share a kind of badness, and we all struggle with shame around badness. And my badness may not look like your badness, and yours may not look like mine. But we share it; and if we could just love each other in our badness and accept and not judge . . . wow, what a world that could be.” Links/Books/Resources Mentioned in Show: Show Note on godhearsher.org God Hears Her website: https://www.godhearsher.org/ Subscribe on iTunes! https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/god-hears-her-podcast/id1511046507?utm_source=applemusic&utm_medium=godhearsher&utm_campaign=podcast Order God Sees Her: 365 Devotions for Women by Women on Amazon. https://amzn.to/32lYSgh Elisa's Instagram: elisamorganauthor Eryn's Instagram: eryneddy Verses Mentioned in Show: Psalm 37:4 NIV Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Psalm+37%3A4&version=NIV Mark 10:18 NIV “No one is good—except God alone.” https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Mark%2010%3A18&version=NIV

Welcome to Day 1684 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me.This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom Keep On Delivering – Daily WisdomWelcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps. So let's jump right in with today's nugget: Today's quote is from Carl Hubbell, and it is: A fellow doesn't last long on what he has done. So he has to keep on delivering. Keep On Delivering We can accomplish outstanding achievements in life, but rarely can we just sit back and not continue to pursue new or additional successes. What we have achieved in the past is soon forgotten, by ourselves and even more so, by others. We shouldn't be content to rest on past success but continue to compete against ourselves to become all that God intended us to be. We need to utilize our God-given talents and abilities effectively. There are times where you need to take a break and rest for a while, but never be so comfortable that you never start again. We were created as God's imagers to fulfill his purpose for us within his kingdom. While accomplishment can bring a significant amount of satisfaction to our life, we should work to bring glory to God and not to ourselves. We should pursue assisting others in the attainment of their dream. Let us keep on keeping on…even when you feel like quitting. Otherwise, you and your accomplishments will be soon forgotten. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Ecclesiastes+5%3A18-20&version=NLT (Ecclesiastes 5:18-20) Even so, I have noticed one thing, at least, that is good. It is good for people to eat, drink, and enjoy their work under the sun during the short life God has given them, and to accept their lot in life. 19 And it is a good thing to receive wealth from God and the good health to enjoy it. To enjoy your work and accept your lot in life—this is indeed a gift from God. 20 God keeps such people so busy enjoying life that they take no time to brood over the past. God doesn't have to choose, to do good. If you and I even want to make an attempt at goodness, we have to decide, and then stick to our decision as the devil's flaming darts come our way. But God is good. It's as easy for Him to be kind as it is for us to be cranky. He is giving, we are selfish; those are our natures. Let's continue to explore this innate, overflowing goodness of God. Welcome to Day 1658 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me.This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to WisdomA Clear Vision – Daily WisdomWelcome to Wisdom-Trek. We are on Day 1658 of our Trek, and it's time to explore another nugget of wisdom, which includes an inspirational quote along with some wise words from Gramps for today's trek. If you apply the words you hear today, over time, it will help you become more healthy, wealthy, and wise as you continue your daily trek of life. So let's jump right in with today's nugget Today's quote is from Brian Tracy, and it is: A clear vision, backed by definite plans, gives you a tremendous feeling of confidence and personal power. A Clear Vision I have known and continue to see individuals who lack the confidence and personal power to succeed in various areas of life. This lack of confidence, many times, will be the result of lacking a clear vision of what a person desires in life. If there is no vision, then there can be no definitive plans made for the future. It requires both. Vision without a plan is just a hallucination. You may see the vision, but it will never become a reality unless you design a plan and take action. On the other hand, a plan without a vision is just drudgery. But a vision with a plan that is then put into action can change the world. To put it in a slightly different light, action without thought is impulsiveness. Thought without action is procrastination. When impulsiveness is unwanted, the message seems to be this: think – that is, reflect at a deeper level – before acting. The opposite of strategic thinking might be mindlessness. Once you have confidence and power, you will be successful in whatever areas of life you desire. When others see confidence in you, they are willing to trust and follow you, giving you the power to carry on and make a positive impact on others for God's kingdom. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs%2016%3A3&version=NLT (Proverbs 16:3) Commit your actions to the Lord, and your plans will succeed. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs%2020%3A18&version=NLT (Proverbs 20:18) Plans succeed through good counsel; don't go to war without wise advice. Welcome to Day 1614 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me.This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to WisdomChange Begins With Caring – Daily WisdomWelcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps! Wisdom is the final frontier in gaining true knowledge. Our mission is to create a legacy of wisdom, seek out discernment and insights, and boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Hello, my friend; this is Gramps. Thanks for coming along on our trek to increase Wisdom and Create a Living Legacy. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs%2016%3A16&version=NLT (Proverbs 16:16) How much better to get wisdom than gold, and sound judgment than silver! Today is Day 1614 of our Trek, and it's time for another nugget of wisdom, which includes an inspirational quote along with some wise words from Gramps for today's trek. If you apply the words you hear today, over time, it will help you become more healthy, wealthy, and wise as you continue your daily trek of life. So let's jump right in with today's nugget: Today's quote is from Margaret J. Wheatley, and it is: All change, even very large and powerful change, begins when a few people start talking with one another about something they care about. Change Begins With Caring To start a change in your personal life and the world you impact, you must care enough to follow through with the change. Even massive changes in the world begin when just a few individuals get together and share what they care about. Through this tiny seed of care, passion, and faith, significant changes have their nucleus. It does not require a lot of resources, time, or effort to begin that change process in your life and the world you impact, just a tiny spark of desire to make the change. Just like a tiny spark can set an entire forest on fire, or the smallest flame to shine in the darkness, so it is with making changes in our world. It is the consistent small steps over time that will allow nations to rise or fall. It is the consistent small steps over time that enable great success, or failure. It is also the small, consistent steps over time that will build God's kingdom on earth. Over the past 2,000 years, from a handful of loyal disciples, the church of Christ has grown into a body of untold millions. This growth will continue until the day when Jesus Christ will return to establish the new Eden where heaven and earth combine. That is the change that we are seeking, and it only requires that you have the faith of a mustard seed that grows into a mighty tree. It only requires that you have the faith of a small measure of yeast to impact the whole batch of dough. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew%2013%3A33&version=NLT (Matthew 13:33) Jesus also used this illustration: “The Kingdom of Heaven is like the yeast a woman used in making bread. Even though she put only a little yeast in three measures of flour, it permeated every part of the dough.” https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Luke+13%3A18-19&version=NLT (Luke 13:18-19) Then Jesus said, “What is the Kingdom of God like? How can I illustrate it? It is like a tiny mustard seed that a man planted in a garden; it grows and becomes a tree, and the birds make nests in its branches.” As you ponder this nugget of wisdom for yourself, I would ask you to please encourage your friends and family to join us and then come along on Monday for another day of ‘Wisdom-Trek, Creating a Legacy.' Welcome to Day 1596 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me.This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to WisdomSecond Nature – Daily WisdomWelcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps! Wisdom is the final frontier in gaining true knowledge. Our mission is to create a legacy of wisdom, seek out discernment and insights, and boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Hello, my friend; this is Gramps. Thanks for coming along on our journey to increase Wisdom and Create a Living Legacy. Today is Day 1596 of our Trek, and it's time for another snippet of wisdom, which includes an inspirational quote along with some wise words from Gramps for today's trek. If you apply the words you hear today, over time, it will help you become healthy, wealthy, and wise as you continue your daily trek of life. So let's jump right in with today's nugget: Today's quote is from Cliff Richard, and it is: What's important is that God is so much part and parcel of life that spontaneous mental chat becomes second nature. Second Nature God loves you unconditionally. Yet most of us don't experience the love of Christ because it is too great to understand fully. God desires for us to yearn for and grasp the power to know His love as we are told in https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Ephesians%203%3A18&version=NLT (Ephesians 3:18) And may you have the power to understand, as all God's people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. God's attributes need to be second nature to us. Since we are to be bearers of His image, He needs to be so much part and parcel of our lives that we are conscously or subconsciously communicating with Him continually. It may be somewhat challenging to grasp this concept, but we have to come to the full realization that the bodies of each Christ-follower, which means each one of us, has become God's temple. God's Spirit now dwells within each believer. If that is true, which it is, then His Spirit is continually communicating with our Spirit. We are united with God through Christ. We no longer have to go to the physical temple, meet with the priest and offer sacrifices. We are continuously in God's presence. When we can grasp just a glimmer of what that means, God is so much part and parcel of life that spontaneous mental chat becomes second nature. This is why the Apostle Paul tells us to put on God's armor so we can stand firm and then encourages us to ‘Pray at all times.' https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Ephesians%206%3A18&version=NLT (Ephesians 6:18) Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere. As you ponder this nugget of wisdom for yourself, please encourage your friends and family to join us and then come along tomorrow for another day of ‘Wisdom-Trek, Creating a Legacy.' February 21, 2021. Our readings, and the sermon today, are about wilderness — and also about baptism, and how they were both essential to Jesus. Readings: Genesis 9:8-17, 1 Peter 3:18-22, Mark 1:9-15 *** Transcript *** When you hear the word “wilderness” what comes to mind? You may respond differently depending on how you feel about the wilderness outdoors. If you are one who, like my friend Keith, loves to travel miles by bike and then sleep in a hammock suspended between trees at night, or like the Cub Scouts in the Youth Group, who reveled in the challenge of cooking dinner over a fire the size and shape of a shoe box and were not the least bit disturbed by fire ants or wasps, the wilderness might excite you. If, however, your idea of “roughing it” starts with being without a TV, or if camping means staying in a cabin with a bathroom and a kitchen, the thought of being in the wilderness may make you cringe. I will admit that as much as Karen and I love visiting parks and hiking outdoors and cooking over a campfire, having a solid roof over our heads that we did not need to assemble ourselves, and a bed at sitting height that doesn't require an air pump, has become more and more appealing over the last few years. As we gather today for our first Sunday in Lent, living into our Lenten theme “Called to Truth,” one short line in the Gospel from Mark tells us that Jesus spent 40 days in the wilderness. The gospel today is about wilderness — and it is also about baptism. Because just before Jesus enters the wilderness, he is baptized by John. And he hears the voice of God affirming his beloved-ness, the deep truth of who he is as God’s child. Baptism, followed by wilderness. They seem to be two polar opposites, don’t they? But they are actually inextricably intertwined in God’s world. God is present equally in the wilderness as in baptism. And this, I think, may be the truth that our scriptures have for us today. Jesus is driven into the wilderness, Mark says. In Mark’s telling, we don’t get a whole lot of detail — just one sentence indicating that his wilderness experience was marked by temptation, wild animals, and angels. Matthew and Luke give us some specific information about the temptations, and they note that Jesus didn’t eat or drink the entire 40 days he spent in the wilderness. All in all, even if you are one who loves the outdoors, this wilderness — Jesus’ wilderness — doesn’t sound exactly peaceful. Jesus spends 40 days being tempted and challenged, in a very profound way, having everything he had just been told by God at his baptism challenged. Beloved? Child of God? Prove it. Show me. How do you really know that? For 40 long days, Jesus is tempted and challenged. We also heard today, as Mr. Jesse mentioned, the story of Noah and his family, in the ark, battered around by raging flood waters for 40 days before hearing that promise of God’s love again. And then we might recall the Israelites, and their journey through the desert for 40 years before they arrived at the promised land, and they and God renewed their covenant, their promise. The exact length of time doesn’t really matter. The truth we know from all of these stories is that the wilderness is not an instant process, a quick and easy place to be, but takes time. Another truth we hear from our gospel today is that Jesus’ ministry comes just as much out of his time in the wilderness as it does out of his baptism. After all, Jesus goes straight from the baptism to the wilderness, and straight from the wilderness to begin his ministry. In the wilderness, Jesus learns something of who he is. He is challenged to forget that his identity comes from God, and each time, he affirms his trust in the God from whom he came, the one who called him beloved. And, we are told, the Spirit was with him there in the wilderness, and the angels waited on him. In the wilderness, Jesus learns that even in the midst of trials and temptations, his identity as beloved holds true. In my wilderness times, this truth has not been clear always in the midst of the struggle. Grief, shame, wounded-ness can overwhelm, making it hard to see, leading us to forget. We have all experienced wildernesses of our own: the death of beloveds, miscarriage, extended unemployment, serious illness and injury, divorce. Even the traumas of this last year of life in a pandemic may feel like something of a wilderness. These times can feel like we are on our own, unsure of who we are and what we are called to do. We may even feel that God has forgotten or abandoned us, leaving us to struggle through on our own. This is not something we choose, and despite Mark telling us that Jesus was driven into the desert, it is also not something that God foists upon us as a punishment or a lesson. There is pain, loss, and grief, that is very human, very real. And, the wilderness is a part of life, a part of our humanity, and there are deep truths that can be revealed there, in time. The truth of the wilderness that Jesus shares with us, and that I have learned as I've emerged from my wildernesses, is that nothing can erase our beloved-ness, and nothing can undo the presence of God in all things. This promise is embedded in creation itself, as we also know from the story of Noah like Mr. Jesse talked about, that rainbow that is the promise of God. And that promise is revealed through the rain. Even death cannot undo God’s promise. The parallels in the Gospel of Mark between Jesus’ baptism and his death are profound. Both include a splitting of the barrier between God and us: at baptism there's a tearing in the sky itself, and at death there's a rending of the curtain in the temple that separated the Holy of Holies, where it was believed that God lived. Both demonstrate the clear presence and movement of the Spirit, in the dove and in the breath, in the story of Jesus' death. And in both baptism and death, there is that voice proclaiming beloved-ness and identity as child of God. In baptism, we claim our beloved-ness as children of God, embracing the truth that goes back to creation, when God formed us from the earth and breathed life into us. In wilderness, our identities are challenged, refined, claimed, and affirmed in new ways. We aren’t told how Jesus felt during his time in the wilderness, or specifically how he may have been changed, but we do know that he left the wilderness ready to begin his ministry, ready to step toward the pain and grief of John the Baptist’s brutal death. The wilderness, it seems, was just as essential to Jesus as his baptism, preparing him to proclaim, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news.” Thanks be to God. *** Keywords *** 2021, Christ Lutheran Church, Webster Groves, sermon, podcast, transcript, YouTube, video, Pastor Meagan McLaughlin, Genesis 9:8-17, 1 Peter 3:18-22, Mark 1:9-15, coronavirus, COVID-19, pandemic

Have an "attitude of gratitude!" We've all heard the (kind of annoying) cliche, right? In today's episode Jared, Richard, and Clint take a closer look at gratitude. This is a topic we sometimes over-simplify. The guys share what living a life of gratitude means for them personally.“There is as much greatness of mind in acknowledging a good turn, as in doing it.” Seneca “...and even though we all can still do more, there's so much to be thankful for.” Josh Groban “…give thanks in everything; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” Paul, (1 Thess 5:18)Questions or comments for us? Welcome to Day 1568 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me.This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to WisdomEnlightenment – Daily WisdomWelcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps! Wisdom is the final frontier in gaining true knowledge. Our mission is to create a legacy of wisdom, seek out discernment and insights, and boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Hello, my friend; this is Gramps; thanks for coming along on our journey to increase Wisdom and Create a Living Legacy. Today is Day 1568 of our Trek, and it's time for your daily snippet of wisdom, which includes an inspirational quote along with some wise words from Gramps for today's trek. If you apply the words you hear today, over time, it will help you become healthy, wealthy, and wise as you continue your daily trek of life. So let's jump right in with today's nugget: Today's quote is from Vic Braden, and it is: The moment of enlightenment is when a person's dreams of possibilities become images of probabilities. Enlightenment We all have dreams, hopes, and expectations for the future of what could be possible. However, dreams will never become a reality unless you are willing to move those dreams to a plan and visualize them as actual probabilities. At that point, your mind will be enlightened, and you can take the first steps towards achieving those dreams. If you never go beyond the dream stage, you will never have those dreams come true. Dreams will become probabilities, and then reality when you turn those dreams into plans and then execute those plans. So my encouragement is to dream big, but do not be satisfied with living in your dream world. After your dream is fully scoped out, create a plan to achieve your dream, and then take action to turn that dream into a reality. Have faith in yourself and your God-given talents and ability. Live fully as God's imager by impacting your world for the building of His kingdom and His glory. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Psalm%2073%3A23%2D25&version=NLT (Psalm 73:23-25) Yet I still belong to you; you hold my right hand. You guide me with your counsel, leading me to a glorious destiny. Whom have I in heaven but you? I desire you more than anything on earth. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=ephesians+1%3A18&version=NLT (Ephesians 1:18) I pray that your hearts will be flooded with light so that you can understand the confident hope he has given to those he called—his holy people who are his rich and glorious inheritance. As you ponder this nugget of wisdom for yourself, I would ask you to please encourage your friends and family to join us and then come along on Monday for another day of ‘Wisdom-Trek, Creating a Legacy.' What does the Christmas season mean to you? Do you still get filled with childlike nostalgia? Do you find it easy to think about the birth of our Savior? Or maybe Christmas often feels like a time of difficulty and struggle for you? The layers and emotions associated with the holidays can sometimes be overwhelming for us. Elisa and Eryn pinpoint some of their own lessons from past Christmas celebrations while also highlighting ways in which we can focus on turning this often stressful season into a season all of us can once again enjoy. Notes and Quotes: “Give thanks in all circumstances. It’s not for all circumstances, but in all circumstances.” “So in that moment, look at that one item and [say], ‘Okay I don’t want this in my life, but I am going to give thanks in it, trusting your character, God, in it.’” “When we say that, I think we are a little afraid it sounds like whining to God, but maybe it sounds like honesty to God.” Thanksgiving Turkey Fingers: Trace your hand on a piece of paper and write down what you are thankful for on each finger. “Gratitude changes us.” “It doesn't diminish the bad, it’s still there; but it puts it into a perspective that helps us in that circumstance to find gratitude.” “Comparison is in the holidays. We compare a lot. I compare a lot . . . what that family looks like, what their holiday card looks like.” “No one is really living a Hallmark life, we are all living real life.” Ideas to get our grateful going: gratitude journal, sticky note reminders, focus on an ornament, correct self-talk, gratitude partner, think about other people. Matthew 1:18-25The Birth of Jesus the Messiah18 Now the birth of Jesus the Messiah[a] took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been engaged to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. 19 Her husband Joseph, being a righteous man and unwilling to expose her to public disgrace, planned to dismiss her quietly. 20 But just when he had resolved to do this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will bear a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” 22 All this took place to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet:23 “Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel,”which means, “God is with us.” 24 When Joseph awoke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him; he took her as his wife, 25 but had no marital relations with her until she had borne a son;[b] and he named him Jesus.

November 8, 2020. Pastor Meagan's sermon today is on Jesus' Parable of the Ten Bridesmaids, and being prepared in the midst of so many long hauls. Readings: Amos 5:18-24, Matthew 25:1-13] *** Transcript *** I am a planner. I always have been, since birth. As a kid, I loved to read Nancy Drew mystery books, and when I read the Tale of the Twister, it offered a list of things to include in an “emergency preparedness kit” and I was all over it. I assembled the most complete backpack of supplies I could manage at the age of 9 — water, flashlight, batteries, granola bars, duct tape, even toothpaste. My brothers got a lot of mileage teasing me when I insisted on bringing the kit on a boat ride one day — until the lights on the boat went out, after dark. And my kit, if you recall, included a flashlight, which we were able to use to aid our way home. I have rarely felt more vindicated in my passion for preparing than in that moment. This desire to plan ahead has followed me into adulthood, and when we were heading out to be with my mother-in-law in her final days in a Wisconsin hospital and weren’t sure how long we would be gone, I made a list of over 30 things to do before we left so we would be ready for an extended absence. And, I got them done in a day! Part of me, when I read today’s gospel about preparing for God’s coming, immediately wants to get out a piece of paper and pen — or maybe the task list on my phone — and begin making my checklist of things to do. Fellow planners back me up on this: isn’t that what Jesus is telling us? To be prepared? To get everything ready, so that we aren’t taken by surprise when God shows up? In spite of the passion I have for planning ahead and preparing, I have to admit that I find Jesus’ parable, of the wise people who planned ahead and had a good stock of oil for their lamps, and the foolish people who didn't have enough oil, a little disturbing. After all, no matter how well we prepare, we may never be fully ready for what actually happens. I don’t think any of us felt prepared for a pandemic — I certainly didn’t, and still don’t, although it’s not from lack of trying. This story of the unprepared, foolish people who miss their opportunity to be with the bridegroom definitely triggers anxiety, and assuming that Jesus is the bridegroom, it leaves us with a rather unforgiving image of our God. If you have enough oil, it seems to say, you’re in. If not, you’re out. The poor, foolish bridesmaids live out the worst nightmare for a planner like me — having failed to plan well enough, they miss their chance, and they're left in the cold. And although the wise bridesmaids don’t overtly judge the foolish ones who don’t have oil, their decision not to share their oil is rather harsh. At least Matthew leaves out the often-mentioned “wailing and gnashing of teeth” that is the punishment for those who are turned away from the banquet! As we look more closely, though, some interesting details are revealed that may help us to understand this parable perhaps a little better. For one thing, Jesus tells us that it wasn’t just the foolish bridesmaids who fell asleep. They all did. None of them were awake and waiting for the bridegroom when he approached. The bridesmaids, the foolish ones, weren’t any better off in that regard. And then, there is the oil. The wise people had oil to spare, and the bridegroom had arrived. Was there really not enough to light all the lamps? Couldn’t they have split the oil among them, like Martin divided his cloak? They just needed enough oil to get them back to the banquet hall, after all. It seems a little selfish not to share, when the light would benefit them all in the end. Theologian Debi Thomas, in her blog “Journey with Jesus,” offers an additional perspective on the oil situation. Perhaps, she suggests, the problem isn’t so much that the foolish ones didn’t have enough oil and the wise ones did but wouldn’t share, but that they all believed that having an abundance of oil was necessary in order to be allowed into the banquet hall. They all thought that the bridegroom cared more about the oil than he did about them! It is, Thomas points out, a very human thing to feel like we can’t present ourselves for the banquet, or whatever challenge or opportunity is in front of us, unless we are completely prepared. The wise people, with their extra oil, probably didn’t want to wait for the bridegroom to arrive. They were tired, we know, and fell asleep because it took so long for him to get there. They were probably as impatient as we were waiting for the last of those election results to come in, perhaps feeling that familiar catch of breath every time they thought they saw a glint of light in the distance the way we did when our browser recycled or we thought we saw a breaking news banner on the top of the page and thought, maybe it’s finally Nevada, or Pennsylvania, or Arizona. And then we sighed and sat back again, until the next time, and the next. No, the wise people probably didn’t want to wait, but they realized that they might have to. And so, they were prepared not just for what they hoped for — the eventual coming of the bridegroom — but for what they knew might be a very long night. If they were anything like me, they probably not only had extra oil, but some food and drink and blankets as well. And so, if we set aside their selfishness for a moment, we can appreciate and learn from them the wisdom of being ready not just for what we hope for, but for the very long wait and journey that it will take to get there. We are in the midst of so many long hauls, family of faith. The pandemic, with its treatments and eventual vaccine that we know so many people are working so hard on, but it still seems like it's taking far too long, certainly much longer than we thought it would take when we began that journey in March. The continued pain and woundedness and division of racism in our country, which people of color and allies have been living with and addressing for so many years. And people are still suffering and dying in its wake wondering, “How long must we wait before justice comes?” The wise ones were prepared for the long haul, and we are wise too if we also prepare for the long haul. But we are foolish if we think that our preparation will make what we wait for come any faster, or make us any more acceptable to the one for whom we are waiting. The wise ones could have shared, like St. Martin did his robe, and not been loved any less. The foolish ones, had they stayed, would have been loved just as well without oil, but they didn’t realize that, and they missed seeing the bridegroom because they thought they weren’t ready enough as they were. The long haul is not an easy path, is it? It is not what any of us choose. It's tiring. It can wear us down, if we aren't ready — and even if we are. And it can leave us feeling unworthy and raggedly unacceptable, even if the truth is that the bridegroom we are waiting for loves us no matter how little oil we have, or how soundly we fall asleep while we're waiting. Because worst of all, the long haul can make us forget what we are really hoping and waiting for to begin with. We can forget that no matter how long it takes, the bridegroom is coming! All of the prophets, and Jesus himself, remind us of this all the time. There will be a banquet. This pandemic will end. The election will be resolved. There will come a time when racism, homophobia and transphobia, poverty and injustices of all kinds will be overcome by the love of God. And we are invited to wait and watch and participate in the reign of God as it approaches, knowing that it will come. Amos reminds the people that it’s not so much about getting everything right so that we can make God’s spirit come on this earth, but about recognizing that God is already here, at work in the world all around us. It’s about letting God’s justice roll down like water, like an ever-flowing stream. We're invited into God’s reign, which is coming not someday way in the future, but is happening right now. And no matter how prepared, or unprepared, or raggedy, or tired we are, we are all invited, and known, and loved. Thanks be to God. *** Keywords *** 2020, Christ Lutheran Church, Webster Groves, sermon, podcast, transcript, YouTube, video, Pastor Meagan McLaughlin, Amos 5:18-24, Matthew 25:1-13, Debi Thomas, Journey with Jesus, coronavirus, COVID-19
We’ve all made bad decisions. Some of those bad decisions come back to haunt us, and some decisions we thought were good at the time end up having nasty consequences. Oftentimes, those moments lead to regret, and many of us struggle to move past our big mistakes. Humorist Liz Curtis Higgs joins Elisa and Eryn to share how we can find freedom from the past and hope for the future. Bio of guest: Liz Curtis Higgs describes herself as a former “bad girl” who met Jesus and is no longer defined by her mistakes. She’s a best-selling author and well-known speaker, and she wrote the foreword for the best-selling devotional from Our Daily Bread Ministries titled God Sees Her. Liz currently lives with her husband, Bill, in their Kentucky home. Notes and Quotes: “I have no comfort zone. I will tell anybody anything if it will point them to the grace of God.” “They saw past all the ick and said, ‘At the heart, she is a woman that needs to know Jesus,’ and so they just loved me right into the kingdom.” “God and His faithfulness waited.” “We all found ways to numb the pain of not being part of the right crowd and created our own crowd.” “For me, I am a girl who likes community, and I wanted that above all.” “When it says in Scripture, ‘He gives you the desires of your heart,’ it doesn’t mean He gives you every little thing your heart desires; it means He places in your heart the desires He would have for you.” “Some of it He dealt with honestly very quickly. . . . That is what I needed. Everybody is different. Some of us are weaned off the old life, and that doesn’t mean that you didn’t hear the Lord correctly or you’re disobedient.” “The path for each of us is so unique; the Savior, though, is one and the same.” “We all share a kind of badness, and we all struggle with shame around badness. And my badness may not look like your badness, and yours may not look like mine. But we share it; and if we could just love each other in our badness and accept and not judge . . . wow, what a world that could be.” Links/Books/Resources Mentioned in Show: Show Notes on godhearsher.org God Hears Her website: https://www.godhearsher.org/ Subscribe on iTunes! https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/god-hears-her-podcast/id1511046507?utm_source=applemusic&utm_medium=godhearsher&utm_campaign=podcast Order God Sees Her: 365 Devotions for Women by Women on Amazon. https://amzn.to/32lYSgh Free eBooklet to Download: The Forgiveness of God: https://discoveryseries.org/courses/the-forgiveness-of-god/ Elisa’s Instagram: elisamorganauthor Eryn’s Instagram: eryneddy Verses Mentioned in Show: Psalm 37:4 NIV Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Psalm+37%3A4&version=NIV Mark 10:18 NIV “No one is good—except God alone.” https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Mark%2010%3A18&version=NIV

Welcome to Day 1507 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me.This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to WisdomTemperance – Humor UnpluggedWisdom - the final frontier to true knowledge. Welcome to Wisdom-Trek! Where our mission is to create a legacy of wisdom, to seek out discernment and insights, to boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Hello, my friend; I am Guthrie Chamberlain, your Captain on our journey to increase Wisdom and Create a Living Legacy. Thank you for joining us today as we explore wisdom on our 2nd millennium of podcasts. This is Day 1507 of our Trek, and time for a 3-minute mini-trek called Humor Unplugged. Our Thursday podcast will provide a short and clean funny story to help you lighten up and live a rich and satisfying life. Something to cheer you and give a bit a levity in your life. We are told in https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs+15:30&version=NLT (Proverbs 15:30) A cheerful look brings joy to the heart; good news makes for good health. We are also encouraged in https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs+17:22&version=NLT (Proverbs 17:22) A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit saps a person's strength. Consider this your vitamin supplement of cheer for today. So let's jump right in with today's funny which is titled: Temperance Pastor Jeremiah, an old-time country preacher, was disturbed by the increasing amount of drinking in his county and even within the church. Pastor Jeremiah thought it was well past time to address it in a sermon. One bright and sunny Sunday morning, he was all prepared. He had all of his points lined up and backed up with Scripture. Pastor Jeremiah went through all of his points, and after about 30 minutes, he was really getting wound up about his temperance sermon with great enthusiasm. As he was getting close to the end, he wanted to drive his point home. He pointed to the congregation and shouted: “If I had all the beer in the world, I'd take it and throw it into the river.” The congregation cried, “Amen!” “And if I had all the wine in the world, I'd take it and throw it in the river.” The congregation cried, “Amen!” “And if I had all the whiskey and the rum in the world, I'd take it all and throw it in the river.” And the congregation cried, “Amen!” After the sermon, pastor Jeremiah sat down, exhausted, sweating, and panting. Next, Deacon Jones stood up and said: “For our closing hymn,” let us turn to page 126 and sing together, ‘Shall We Gather at the River.'”I hope that brought a smile to your face today. If it did pass your smile onto some else, we all could use a kind smile each day. Our Thursday thought is from Ernest Hemmingway, “Always do sober what you said you'd do drunk. That will teach you to keep your mouth shut.” Here is our verse for today: https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Ephesians%205%3A18&version=NLT (Ephesians 5:18) Don't be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, and making music to the Lord in your hearts. Just as you enjoy these nuggets of humor, please encourage your friends and family to join us and then come along tomorrow for another day of ‘Wisdom-Trek, Creating a Legacy.' If you would like to listen to any of our past 1506 treks or read the Wisdom Journal, they are all available at Wisdom-Trek.com. I encourage you to subscribe to Wisdom-Trek on your favorite podcast player so that each day will be downloaded to you automatically. Thank you for allowing me to be your guide, mentor, and most importantly, I am your friend as I serve you through this Wisdom-Trek podcast and journal each day. As we take this Trek of life together, let us always: Live Abundantly (Fully) Love Unconditionally Listen...

John 1:1-14 is the Prologue of the Gospel according to John. This is probably the most theological passage in John. The greatest theme from verses 1-18 is that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. And, God Himself. There is also a great emphasis in how the Word, who is Jesus Christ God the Son, the Son of God, became flesh, in other words the eternal God incarnated and dwelt and ministered among men, so that ALL who believed in Him Would be saved. So we are going to take this verse by verse so we can all follow along. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Our website: www.deepbiblestudies.com Our email contact@deepbiblestudies.com Our Youtube Channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgyPJQE2418rWhnkmvNd9qQ Our Instagram https://www.instagram.com/deepbiblestudies/ Our Facebook https://www.facebook.com/deepbiblestudies DEEP Bible Studies Gospel Episode open.spotify.com/episode/6w9ydEA62lXghKqu7HpCpl?context=spotify%3Ashow%3A48NVPKFVGa35K1qtvUdrVg&si=27IklTQFQZKPxvBsMT_Exw First 40 minutes of American Gospel (also found in Netflix): https://youtu.be/ocHm18wUAGU John MacArthur ESV Study Bible https://www.gty.org/store/bibles/44ESVCOB/esv-macarthur-study-bible Sermon Jesus: the Divine Word (John 1: 1-5) by John MacArthur https://youtu.be/wXzIKQ-OTXc Book quoted: Pursuit of God by A.W. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Nuestro sitio web: www.deepbiblestudies.com Nuestro email contact@deepbiblestudies.com Nuestro canal de Youtube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgyPJQE2418rWhnkmvNd9qQ Nuestro Instagram https://www.instagram.com/deepbiblestudies/ Nuestro Facebook https://www.facebook.com/deepbiblestudies Episodio "El Evangelio": open.spotify.com/episode/6w9ydEA62lXghKqu7HpCpl?context=spotify%3Ashow%3A48NVPKFVGa35K1qtvUdrVg&si=27IklTQFQZKPxvBsMT_Exw First 40 minutes of American Gospel (also found in Netflix): https://youtu.be/ocHm18wUAGU John MacArthur ESV Study Bible https://www.gty.org/store/bibles/44ESVCOB/esv-macarthur-study-bible Sermon Jesus: the Divine Word (John 1: 1-5) by John MacArthur https://youtu.be/wXzIKQ-OTXc Book quoted: Pursuit of God by A.W. It was another strong week for markets to kick off the month of August. For the week, the S&P 500 was up 2.45%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 3.8% and the Nasdaq rose 2.75%. On the commodities front, both gold (up 2.1%) and oil (up 2.4%) continued to rise. With Congress unsuccessfully reaching agreement on terms for additional stimulus, President Trump stepped. Through several executive orders, the President sought to create four key assistance programs and provide additional stimulus for Americans amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Today’s Key Questions - Does President Trump have the authority to push stimulus forward without Congress? - Is the employment picture improving, weakening or treading water? Today’s Bible Verse – Proverbs 29:18 Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he. May 24, 2020. Is anyone else feeling a little bit humdrum these days? During this time of physical isolation and sheltering in place, it's easy to lose track of the days and to lose track of our purpose. We might even find ourselves saying, "What is the point?" Rachel Helton preaches today on how our reading from Ecclesiastes (as well as lessons from the movie "Groundhog Day") can help us find our purpose for these monotonous days during the pandemic.Readings: Ecclesiastes 1:2-9, Ecclesiastes 2:12-14, Ecclesiastes 2:18-25*** Transcript ***Has anyone else been waking up lately with the sound of Sonny & Cher's "I Got You Babe" playing in their head? I'm looking for Mark Ruff, because I know he put this idea in my mind a few weeks ago, and now it's happening to me. So, for those of you that know and those of you that don't know, in the movie "Groundhog Day" from the early 1990s, a self-proclaimed, under-appreciated weatherman is assigned with covering the events of February 2nd in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania when a groundhog named Phil will predict the end of winter, based on whether or not he sees his shadow. The weatherman, also named Phil, has contempt for this assignment and for the people in this small town. He's eager to get this story over with and move on to bigger and better things. But thanks to a blizzard, Phil is stuck spending an extra night in Punxsutawney. And he wakes up the next morning to find that it's February 2nd. Again.Day after day, he wakes up in the same bed, hearing the same song playing on the clock radio: "I Got You Babe," by Sonny & Cher. He sees the same people doing the same things. It's always February 2nd. He's trapped in this sort of time loop. He goes from confusion to frustration to downright anger. He eventually starts to manipulate this reality for his own benefit — initially because it seems there are no real consequences for any of his behaviors, and then eventually because he's trying to win over his love interest. But despite his efforts, nothing ever really changes. Everything is fleeting. All is vanity.Does this feel at all familiar? Is anyone else feeling a little bit humdrum these days? During this time of physical isolation and sheltering in place, it's easy to lose track of the days and to lose track of our purpose. We might even find ourselves saying, "What is the point?" A few Saturdays ago, I decided that our house should be cleaned from top to bottom — and everyone was going to help. About an hour in, my son Isaac said, "Mom, what are we doing? No one has been in our house for weeks. No one will be coming to our house for weeks. By the time someone can come over again, everything will be dirty. What is the point?" What is the point? And there have been plenty of disappointments in the last few weeks too, haven't there? Field trips that didn't happen. Last days of school that meant, at least for us, picking up a garbage bag of your child's desk contents while standing six feet apart, wearing a mask, on the sidewalk in front of the school. High school graduations that are meant to celebrate achievements and years of friendship that were moved to Zoom. Family vacations canceled. Special visits from friends and family afar postponed. And then there are the casual meals around the dinner table with the friends from down the block, that are suddenly just absent from our lives. And all this not to mention the real suffering that is happening from COVID. You're surrounded by words and images of illness and death. There's a real danger in our humdrum of becoming used to these images and numbers, of becoming numb to the injustices of our world that mean that people living in North St. Louis, people living in poverty, people of color are being affected more harshly by this virus. We can become numb to the pain that people are feeling and the sheer magnitude of thousands, tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands of deaths from this pandemic. As we spend day after day doing the same things, inside the same walls, with the same people, without the usual moments of novelty and excitement to break things up a bit, the humdrum can feel unavoidable. In the words of Kohelet, the teacher in Ecclesiastes, what has been is what will be, and what has been done is what will be done. There is nothing new under the sun. I saw all the deeds that are done under the sun, and see all is vanity, a chasing after the wind. The Hebrew word "hevel" is repeated 37 times in the Book of Ecclesiastes. It's the word that's often translated as "vanity" or "meaningless." But it's perhaps better understood as "fleeting," "impermanent" — something like a vapor or a mist.People have been searching for the meaning of life throughout all of recorded history. Kohelet searches for the meaning too. Is it our work? His answer is no. In the end, all that we work for may be handed over to someone else. Our achievements are impermanent. So, is it knowledge? I hate to tell you this, graduates, but his answer is no to this too. In the end, the person with knowledge will come to the same fate as the person without knowledge. Is it pleasure? Should we just live it up, seize the day? Is this the meaning of life? Another no. This too is fleeting. So the Book of Ecclesiastes opens with the teacher looking around and declaring that everything about life is meaningless, vaporous, fleeting, out of his control. Kohelet tries to justify his life with reason, and he just can't do it. He is honest and raw and frustrated. If nothing else, this book might teach us that God sees us in our frustrated search for meaning. We are allowed to be there. We are in fact invited to be there.Luckily though, this isn't the end of our story. This isn't the whole picture. So what then is the meaning? Where then can be our hope? Despite the fact that nothing about our existence is guaranteed, that there are limitations to our earthly life, God is limitless. Even in the mundane, simple activities of our daily existence, it is God's presence that makes life meaningful. It is God's presence that moves our activities from ordinary to holy, and creates purpose out of our willingness to use our lives to serve others. The ability to find not just purpose, but joy in our purpose and in our very existence, is a gift from God — a gift to be received but not possessed. When we surrender our time, our efforts, our simple moments to God — not expecting a reward, not expecting productivity or end results, but simply having faith that God will be active in our lives — this makes hope and life and meaning eternal.Kohelet writes in chapter 2, verse 24, "There is nothing better for mortals than to eat and drink and find enjoyment in their toil. This also I saw is from the hand of God, for apart from him, who can eat or who can have enjoyment?" Eating, drinking, working, enjoying — these can be acts of faith, faith in the eternal. This is where we, like Jesus, may become glorified by God, and bring glory to God, in this very moment, however boring and humdrum it may feel.So is the work the meaning of life? No, but we should do work that's meaningful and that serves others. Is knowledge the meaning of life. No, but we should pursue wisdom that helps us to understand God's purposes for creation. Is pleasure the meaning of life? No, but we should enjoy the pleasures of life knowing that they are gifts from God.In a moment, we'll pray together the Lord's Prayer, and we will ask God to provide our daily bread. We are asking God for the ordinary things that sustain our lives. We are surrendering to the fact that in the absence of God, the cosmos is repetitive, weary, fleeting. But God's presence in the ordinary, God's presence in our eating and drinking, in our work and in our enjoyment, makes it meaningful. This is the wisdom of God that has the power to sustain us. This is our daily bread. As the movie "Groundhog Day" moves on, Bill Murray's character starts to be transformed. He starts to do things not for himself, but for other people. And he starts to surrender to the fact that he does not have the power to change his situation. With this acknowledgement of his own limitations, and his shift from serving himself to serving others, he finally wakes up to February 3rd. In the final scene of the movie, Phil steps out onto the street — the same street that he's been stepping out onto, day after day after day — always the same gray, detestable street. But today it's new. He sees the world suddenly in a new way, and he looks around and he says, "It's beautiful. Let's live here."As we step into week 11 of COVID isolation, instead of focusing on the day when all will be back to normal — whatever that may mean — what if instead, we took a deep breath, quieted our anxious minds, allowed ourselves to ask what purpose does God have for this day? What meaning can God bring to this monotonous, humdrum, fleeting day, and all the simple moments in it? We just might find ourselves looking around our weary world, seeing God's promises of justice, hope, love, and saying to ourselves, "It's beautiful. Let's live here."Amen.*** Keywords ***2020, Christ Lutheran Church, Webster Groves, sermon, podcast, transcript, Rachel Helton, Ecclesiastes 1:2-9, Ecclesiastes 2:12-14, Ecclesiastes 2:18-25, Sonny & Cher, I Got You Babe, Bill Murray, Groundhog Day, coronavirus

"The story of Zachariah is a warning to religious people." Sometimes Christians are clueless about what it means to be a Christian. When you've grown up in a Christian household and have been one for as long as you can remember, when it's all you've ever known, it can be hard to describe. You might think you get it, but you really don't. Zachariah was a priest, and his faith failed him. He demonstrates what faith isn't. Nov. 13, 2019, | Pastor Nathan Elms Giving thanks is God's will for us. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 (https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1+Thessalonians+5%3A18&version=NKJV) If we are only grateful during good times, our response hinges on God's gifts to us, and our gratitude becomes conditional and weak. The Israelites expressed this conditional gratitude to God many times throughout the Old Testament. They were thankful when the Lord delivered them, but they were often grumbling when things didn't go their way. If we're honest, it's easier to be thankful when things are great in our lives, not when they are hard. The danger comes when our warmth towards God becomes dependent on the tangible good things he provides us rather than the good God he has proven to be. James 1:2-4 (https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=James+1%3A2-4&version=NKJV) God desires that we desire Him, the Giver, and not the gifts alone. Psalm 107:15, ESV (https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Psalm+107%3A15&version=ESV) God is not aloof or distant, nor is he fickle in his love like the Israelites and us. He is ever-present and continually offers the gift of himself, even when we experience suffering, persecution, sickness, financial burden, relational turmoil, or other hardships. James 1:17 ESV (https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=James+1%3A17&version=ESV) Here are 7 scientifically proven benefits (Psychology magazine) : 1. Gratitude opens the door to more relationships. 2. Gratitude improves physical health. 3. Gratitude improves psychological health. 4. Gratitude enhances empathy and reduces aggression. 5. Grateful people sleep better. 6. Gratitude improves self-esteem. 7. Gratitude increases mental strength. Recognizing all that you have to be thankful for —even during the worst times—fosters resilience.

This message is the first of a 2 part series titled “REMEMBER | The Significance of Baptism & the Lord's Supper". In this message, Dr. Smilie answers the question, “What must I do to 'Clean My Plate' spiritually in the Lord's Supper?"Scripture References: 1 Corinthians 11:18-30In this two-part series, Dr. Bruce Smilie reminds us that in the hustle and bustle of life, with all its piants that need slaying, mountaints that need moving, and seas that need parting, God wants to put our minds at ease through it all by urging us simply to remember Him. That is, His children remembering who He is, what He has donein the past and is doing presently in our lives, and what He expects of us in life and ministry in return. God brilliantly designed the ordinances of baptism and the Lord's Supper to help us do just that!Click here to listen

Luke 7:18-35 Jesus and John the Baptist18 John’s disciples told him about all these things. Calling two of them,19 he sent them to the Lord to ask, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?”20 When the men came to Jesus, they said, “John the Baptist sent us to you to ask, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?’”21 At that very time Jesus cured many who had diseases, sicknesses and evil spirits, and gave sight to many who were blind. 22 So he replied to the messengers, “Go back and report to John what you have seen and heard: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy[a]are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor. 23 Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me.”24 After John’s messengers left, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swayed by the wind? 25 If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear expensive clothes and indulge in luxury are in palaces. 26 But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 27 This is the one about whom it is written:“‘I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.’[b]28 I tell you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John; yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.”29 (All the people, even the tax collectors, when they heard Jesus’ words, acknowledged that God’s way was right, because they had been baptized by John. 30 But the Pharisees and the experts in the law rejected God’s purpose for themselves, because they had not been baptized by John.)31 Jesus went on to say, “To what, then, can I compare the people of this generation? What are they like? 32 They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling out to each other:“‘We played the pipe for you, and you did not dance;we sang a dirge, and you did not cry.’33 For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon.’ 34 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’ 35 But wisdom is proved right by all her children.”

Wisdom-Trek / Creating a Legacy Welcome to Day 567 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom Are You a Salty Person? – Wisdom Unplugged Thank you for joining us for our 5 days per week wisdom and legacy building podcast. This is https://wisdom-trek.com/day-567/ (Day 567) of our trek, and it is time for a 3-minute mini-trek called Wisdom Unplugged. This short nugget of wisdom includes an inspirational quote with a little additional content for today's trek. Consider this your vitamin supplement of wisdom for today. So let's jump right in with today's nugget. Today’s quote is from Sadhu Sundar Singh who said, “Salt, when dissolved in water, may disappear, but it does not cease to exist. We can be sure of its presence by tasting the water. Likewise, the indwelling Christ, though unseen, will be made evident to others from the love which he imparts to us.” Are you a salty person? Salt, when it is it completely dissolved in water, cannot be detected just by looking at it. In the same manner, a person who just sees you will not be aware of your status as a Christ follower. When you taste salt water, it is immediately evident that the water contains salt. It is only when others can experience your love for them and others will it be evident of your relationship to God. There are so many Bible verses that relay this thought. The first one is https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1+John+3%3A18-19&version=NLT (1 John 3:18-19), “Dear children, let's not merely say that we love each other; let us show the truth by our actions. Our actions will show that we belong to the truth, so we will be confident when we stand before God.” Salt is used to preserve food and also to enhance its flavor. In the same way, as Christ followers, we should preserve love in the world and enhance the lives of others. If we lose our saltiness, then we will fall prey to what Jesus taught us in https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew+5%3A13&version=NLT (Matthew 5:13), “You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it salty again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless.” So let me ask you again. Are you a salty person? Preserve and enhance your world through an overflowing love put into action. That's a wrap for today's Wisdom Unplugged quote. Wisdom-Trek / Creating a LegacyWelcome to Day 551 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me.I am Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to WisdomThere are Three Things that Amaze Me – https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs+30%3A18-33&version=NLT (Proverbs [30:18]-33) Thank you for joining us for our 5 days per week wisdom and legacy building podcast. Today is https://wisdom-trek.com/day-551/ (Day 551) of our trek, and it is Wisdom Wednesday. Every Wednesday along life's trails we dig for the nuggets of wisdom that are found within the book of Proverbs. Today we will explore the 2nd half of Chapter 30. We are broadcasting from our studio at The Big House in Marietta, Ohio. After nearly three weeks of constant travel, I am in our office most of this week before heading to Charlotte for three days. After that, I should be in for two weeks before heading to Arizona towards the end of March. Last week in our study of Proverbs, we switched focus from King Solomon who wrote most of Proverbs to a man we know little of whose name was Agur. In some translations it indicates that Agur was writing “to Ithiel and Ucal,” men who could have been disciples or friends of Agur, although some Bibles translate the meaning of the two names with the assumption that they do not refer to actual people. Most commentators believe Agur lived in the same era as Solomon. We don't know much about Agur except what we can glean from this one chapter. This is one of my favorite chapters in Proverbs because of its rich imagery and contrasting statements. The name Agur comes from a Hebrew word meaning “collector.” Agur and his father Jakeh are only mentioned here in the Bible and are otherwise unknown. As we start with verse 18 today, Agur's talent for relating to the obvious shines through. It is a Hebrew poetic style comparing similar statements for impact. This section starts out with… https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs+30%3A18-33&version=NLT (There Are Three Things That Amaze Me)Let's dig for the nuggets of wisdom today that Agur shares in verses https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs+30%3A18-33&version=NLT (18-33). 18 There are three things that amaze me— no, four things that I don't understand: 19 how an eagle glides through the sky, how a snake slithers on a rock, how a ship navigates the ocean, how a man loves a woman. While we have made significant advancements in our scientific knowledge of the first three items that are listed, they still are an amazement to us. To witness the eagle in flight floating on the winds, the snake slithering on a rock at angles we could never achieve, and a large ship navigating the largest oceans, leaves us in awe. A greater mystery in life is what causes the attraction between a man and a woman. Many times the physical and emotional differences between couples are so different that we wonder what chemistry caused the attraction in the first place. All four of these references leave us standing in amazement. 20 An adulterous woman consumes a man, then wipes her mouth and says, “What's wrong with that?” Another one of life's mysteries that can leave us pondering is an illicit affair between people who are married to others. Those that are involved in such activity appear oblivious to the dangers. It is a situation that will never end well and causes such hurt and grief to all that are involved. 21 There are three things that make the earth tremble— no, four it cannot endure: 22 a slave who becomes a king, an overbearing fool who prospers, 23 a bitter woman who finally gets a husband, a servant girl who supplants her mistress. Here is another analogy that compares, contrasts, and then adds a fourth element for emphasis. Three things that shake our very paradigm of our world…A slave who...
