A Bigger Life Prayer and Bible Devotionals with Pastor Dave Cover
One of the most important ways to see yourself is having an amazing worth to God. You were “https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1%20Corinthians%206%3A20&version=NIV (bought with a price),” the New Testament says. And that price was God himself in the body of Jesus. What that really means for you is the subject of this episode. We are setting up a base camp here in Psalm 106 for a little while because it touches on a lot of really crucial issues if we want to walk with God. If we want to live the bigger life. Live into the better story. So the last episode we looked at three things you have to believe if you want to walk with God. 1. That God's word/promises are true. 2. That he loves you specifically with an abundant infinite steadfast love. 3. And that his will for you ultimately is your good. Your only good. Your better story. These three reasons are why you can trust him completely. And need to trust him completely. (Like this podcast? Leave us a rating so others can find it more easily. Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever! 4 Remember me, O LORD, when you show favor to your people; help me when you save them, 5 that I may look upon the prosperity of your chosen ones, that I may rejoice in the gladness of your nation, that I may glory with your inheritance. 6 Both we and our fathers have sinned; we have committed iniquity; we have done wickedness. 7 Our fathers, when they were in Egypt, did not consider [Hebrew: they did not remember] your wondrous works; they did not remember the abundance of your steadfast love, but rebelled by the sea, at the Red Sea. 45 For their sake he remembered his covenant, and relented according to the abundance of his steadfast love. Below are some of the New Testament verses discussed in these episodes: 1 Corinthians 6:19–20 NIV 19 Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies. 1 Corinthians 6:11 NIV But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. John 17:23–24 NIV 23 I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. 24 “Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world. Romans 5:6–10 NIV 6 You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. 7 Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. 8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God's wrath through him! 10 For if, while we were God's enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life! Titus 3:4-8 ESV But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. The saying is trustworthy, and I want you to insist on these things, so that those who have believed in God may be careful to devote themselves to good works. These things are...

Welcome to Day 1683 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me.This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to WisdomA Character of Integrity – Daily WisdomWelcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps. Wisdom is the final frontier in gaining true knowledge. We are on a daily trek to create a legacy of wisdom, seek out discernment and insights, and boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Hello, my friend; this is Gramps. Thanks for coming along on today's trek as we increase Wisdom and Create a Living Legacy. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs%2016%3A16&version=NLT (Proverbs 16:16) How much better to get wisdom than gold, and sound judgment than silver! We are on Day 1683 of our Trek, and it's time to explore another nugget of wisdom, which includes an inspirational quote along with some wise words from Gramps for today's trek. If you apply the words you hear today, over time, it will help you become more healthy, wealthy, and wise as you continue your daily trek of life. So let's jump right in with today's nugget: Today's quote is from Thomas Fuller, and it is: A fault, once denied, is twice committed. A Character of Integrity I believe we all have the propensity to lie or to cover up our faults and inadequacies. We desire to make ourselves look better in front of others. While I certainly understand that desire and tendency, this type of behavior shows a weakness of integrity. Covering up a fault will only make us look even worse when the truth is discovered. It is much better to admit and confess when we have erred. We may have to suffer the embarrassment and possible ridicule now, but that is much less than what we will have to suffer if we engage in covering up, and then it is exposed. A person with character traits that include being honest with themselves will show to others that we have a character of integrity. Don't let the temptation to look good in the short term cost us our life of strong integrity long term. We all have faults; that is part of being a human. To attempt a cover-up of those faults is shortsighted, foolish, and will result in the fault being committed twice. It is just not worth it. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs%2010%3A9&version=NLT (Proverbs 10:9) People with integrity walk safely, but those who follow crooked paths will be exposed. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs%2011%3A20&version=NLT (Proverbs 11:20) The Lord detests people with crooked hearts, but he delights in those with integrity. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs%2020%3A7&version=NLT (Proverbs 20:7) The godly walk with integrity; blessed are their children who follow them. We are on Day 1663 of our Trek, and it's time to explore another nugget of wisdom, which includes an inspirational quote along with some wise words from Gramps for today's trek. If you apply the words you hear today, over time, it will help you become more healthy, wealthy, and wise as you continue your daily trek of life. So let's jump right in with today's nugget: Today's quote is from C.S. Lewis, and it is: A continual looking forward to the eternal world is not a form of escapism or wishful thinking, but one of the things a Christian is meant to do. Looking Forward I have to admit; I am future-oriented in my outlook on life. The past and the present do not strongly influence what I anticipate will happen in the future. I am optimistic but pragmatic. While I don't look at the future through rose-colored glasses, I tend to reframe any situation in my life positively. I realize that others view the future based on their experiences of the past. Still, others view the future on what is happening in the present. Regardless of which perspective you view life, as Christ-followers, we often reframe our past and current circumstances based on what we perceive heaven or eternity to be like. In that manner, Christ-followers at times do minimize their responsibilities that we have on earth. We do need to fulfill our purpose in building God's kingdom while we dwell on the earth, but we can never take our eyes off the prize before us, which is eternity. Sometimes this will cause us to conflict with our focus in life. We desire eternity, but yet we still have work to do while we are alive. So while we can look eagerly towards eternity, we must remain steadfast in our devotion and service to God. This is how the Apostle Paul put it in his letter to the Philippians. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Philippians+1%3A20-24&version=NLT (Philippians 1:20-24) For I fully expect and hope that I will never be ashamed, but that I will continue to be bold for Christ, as I have been in the past. And I trust that my life will bring honor to Christ, whether I live or die. For to me, living means living for Christ, and dying is even better. But if I live, I can do more fruitful work for Christ. So I really don't know which is better. I'm torn between two desires: I long to go and be with Christ, which would be far better for me. But for your sakes, it is better that I continue to live. As you ponder this nugget of wisdom for yourself, please encourage your friends and family to join us and then come along tomorrow for another day of ‘Wisdom-Trek, Creating a Legacy.' March 21, 2021. The truth of our identity as children of God is in our very DNA. We humans struggle. But ultimately we don’t have to struggle to see Jesus, because he draws us to him. Readings: Jeremiah 31:31-34, John 12:20-33 *** Transcript *** From the time we're born, we human beings long to know who we are and where we belong. When we're infants, those who love and care for us watch and listen for each little gurgle and smile and coo, and they delight as they see our unique personalities emerging. And as we grow, we figure out how we fit in our family, adjusting as younger siblings are born, grandparents or others move in or out, or as family members die. Our families are generally our first place of belonging, and our first place of discovering who we are. As we grow older, that process continues. We go to school, we make our first friends, maybe find a best friend, another person with whom we fit. We go to college, leaving our families behind, and after a time find our “people.” And along with what we learn in the classroom, we learn about ourselves in ways we would never have expected. We begin to find out who we are as adults, and dream of what our lives might be like when we are on our own — where we'll live, what our purpose will be, who we'll spend our time with, who we will be, and where and with whom we'll belong. We find out at some point along the way that we will never be completely done with this. Divorce, death, loss in abilities or illness, employment transition, even perhaps a pandemic, could lead to a change in our circumstances we didn’t anticipate. And we may once again find ourselves wondering who we are and where we belong, long after we thought we had figured that out. There can be joy and excitement along the way. And the process can also bring loneliness, isolation, confusion, grief, frustration, and a host of other very real human emotions. The truth is, becoming the person God created us to be, and finding our purpose and place of belonging, are not easy — not for us, or for those close to us. If we have ever struggled with this, or are struggling with it now, we can find a lot of hope in our readings for today. Because one thing that becomes clear as we listen is that God understands our need for belonging, and how easy it is to forget who we are. Jeremiah is bringing God’s word to a people who have been exiled, cut off from the place they belonged and from many of those they belonged with. It even felt to them that they had been cut off from God, as they had been driven away from the temple in Jerusalem where they had celebrated all of their holy days, the place they went to be with God. Perhaps we can understand that better now than ever, when it is almost exactly a year since we celebrated our first Zoom worship. We have, in a very real sense, been living through a time of exile, from our church building and for many of us also from our schools and workplaces, and we've been physically separated from one another in ways we have never experienced before. We have had to do so much rethinking about who we spend our time with, and how. We as a community have had to reimagine what it means to be church, and how to minister together. I find it really encouraging to know that none of this is new. God knew how hard it was for the Israelites, and through Jeremiah’s words, he reminded them of who they were: ones with God’s promise written on their hearts. And the same is true for us. Think about that for a moment. God has written God’s promise on our hearts. Your council reflected on this at our monthly meeting this last week, and shared what this means for them: forgiveness, as we know God is with us when we make mistakes, guiding us back to the right path, knowing that no matter how hard or confusing things are, God will show us what we need to know. Comfort, in trusting God's presence, even in chaotic or frightening times. And the freedom to be the people God has created us to be. Our identity as beloved of God is coded in our DNA. Nothing can change that. In spite of recent declarations that LGBTQ people are not acceptable as they are, the constant denial of basic human rights and dignity of People of Color, the shootings targeting Asian people in Atlanta that took eight lives this week, the brutal assault on life and freedom of people in Myanmar who are calling for justice, the trauma and exile of pandemic. Despite all of that, God is faithful, and the promise holds. We don’t have to struggle and work and study and strive to belong to God. We just belong. In our gospel from John today, Jesus tells everyone listening just how faithful God is to this promise. John tells us that two Greek people showed up wanting to see Jesus, and in response, Jesus says not only that all people are welcome, but that this is exactly why he came — to draw us all to himself, and to God. Jesus doesn’t shy away from the pain and the struggle of that call. He says that his death will lead to the life that is promised, and that it is through being raised on the cross that we will be drawn together. Jesus, in John, knows who he is and what he is here to do, and it is all part of that plan to bring us home. This world carries so much beauty and promise, and we know this year more than most that there is pain and suffering in this life too. As Mr. Jesse is saying, there are things that are positive and strong and happy and hopeful, and there is struggle and mistakes and pain in this world too. And through all of it, the truth of the cross is clear. As much as we humans may wonder and question and seek, God’s promise is coded in our very DNA, so nothing can erase it. No matter what else happens or what changes may come, no matter what challenges or pain we face, through the cross, Jesus calls us all to him. It's what he came to do, and it is where we belong. Thanks be to God. *** Keywords *** 2021, Christ Lutheran Church, Webster Groves, sermon, podcast, transcript, YouTube, video, Pastor Meagan McLaughlin, Jesse Helton, Jeremiah 31:31-34, John 12:20-33, COVID-19, coronavirus

Welcome to Day 1581 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me.I am Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to WisdomNot of This World – Worldview WednesdayWelcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps! Wisdom is the final frontier in gaining true knowledge. Our mission is to create a legacy of wisdom, seek out discernment and insights, and boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Hello, my friend; this is Gramps; thanks for coming along on our journey to increase Wisdom and Create a Living Legacy. Today is Day 1581 of our Trek, and it is Worldview Wednesday. Creating a Biblical Worldview is essential to have a proper perspective on today's current events. To establish a Biblical Worldview, you must have a proper understanding of God and His Word. This week, we will continue reviewing the book from Dr. Michael S Heiser titled “Supernatural.” The book is an abbreviated version of his more comprehensive book, “The Unseen Realm.” I highly recommend both of these books. Creating a Biblical Worldview based on how the Old and New Testaments connect with God's overall plan for humanity is essential. This book review will help us understand what the Bible teaches about the unseen world, and why it matters. Not of This World In Jesus' well-known prayer in the garden of Gethsemane before he was arrested for trial, he said of his followers in https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=John+17%3A16&version=NLT (John 17:16), They do not belong to this world any more than I do. Believers were certainly in the world, specially tasked by God to carry the gospel to every nation (Matthew 28:19–20), but they were not of the world. This paradox—being in the world but not of it—was telegraphed to early Christians in several memorable ways. Sacred Space, Holy Ground, and God's PresenceIn chapter 8 of Supernatural, we talked about the concept of sacred space. For Old Testament Israelites, God was utterly other. The space his presence occupied was set apart from all other space. That wasn't a denial that God was omnipresent—in all places at all times. Instead, it was a way of marking the territory on which he chose to meet with his people. That was one of the purposes for having the tabernacle and the temple. The concept of sacred space was not only the rationale for many of Israel's laws and rituals, but it also reinforced the idea of cosmic geography—how the world was divided among the lesser gods and the Most High God, the God of Israel. The notion of sacred space gets brought into the New Testament in a dramatic way. All we need to ask is, “Where is the presence of God right now?” While God is everywhere, he dwells explicitly within each believer. Believe it or not, you are sacred space. Paul very clearly wrote in https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1+Corinthians+6%3A19&version=NLT (1 Corinthians 6:19) Don't you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? The same is true of the ground where believers gather as a group. Writing to the church at Corinth, Paul told them collectively in 1 Corinthians 3:16, Don't you realize that all of you together are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God lives in you? He told the Ephesian believers they were “members of the household of God … a holy temple in the Lord. In him you also are built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit” (Eph. 2:19, 21–22). The implications are startling. Most of us are familiar with Jesus' statement in https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew+18%3A20&version=NLT (Matthew 18:20), “For where two or three gather together as my followers, I am there among them.” But viewed in the context of the Old Testament idea of sacred space, that statement means that wherever believers gather, the spiritual ground they occupy is sanctified amid the powers of darkness. Yahweh's final chosen dwelling place in the Old Testament...

Welcome to Day 1567 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me.This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to WisdomMoving Mountains – Daily WisdomWelcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps! Today is Day 1567 of our Trek, and it's time for your daily snippet of wisdom, which includes an inspirational quote along with some wise words from Gramps for today's trek. If you apply the words you hear today, over time, it will help you become healthy, wealthy, and wise as you continue your daily trek of life. So let's jump right in with today's nugget: Today's quote is from a Chinese Proverb, and it is: The man who removes a mountain begins by carrying away small stones. Moving Mountains No matter how large or intimidating a project or task is, it can be completed with perseverance when it is broken down into its smallest possible component. Many people will become overwhelmed when they are confronted with decisions or choices they face. Instead of just taking each next step one after another, they become paralyzed and make no progress. It is like standing at the bottom of a very long set of stairs and wondering how they will reach the top in a single step. When viewed in that manner, it is impossible. No matter how hard or difficult a journey may seem, to get through the most challenging journey, we need to take only one step at a time, but we must keep on stepping. If your life is in disarray, don't try to overhaul your life overnight. Instead, focus on making one small change at a time. Over time, those small changes will add up to a significant transformation. Just don't give up. Just breath in and breathe out and remember that moving forward means taking one step at a time. Even the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. When our children or employees would become overwhelmed with a task, I would ask them. “How do you eat an elephant?” I would then give them the answer, which is, “one bite at a time.” Bringing the conversation back to the quote for today. Persistence is the most potent force on earth. You can move mountains one small stone at a time. So it is with our spiritual lives. So often, we are thwarted from making progress in our lives because we do not have the faith that God can enable us to accomplish all that we are capable of. We lack faith in our God-given talents and abilities. So my encouragement to you is to have faith and take your trek of life one step at a time. Move your mountains one small stone at a time. All you need is faith the size of a mustard seed, and you can be a mountain mover. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew%2017%3A20&version=NLT (Matthew 17:20) “You don't have enough faith,” Jesus told them. “I tell you the truth, if you had faith even as small as a mustard seed, you could say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,' and it would move. Nothing would be impossible.” As you ponder this nugget of daily wisdom yourself, I would ask you to please encourage your friends and family to join us and then come along tomorrow for another day of ‘Wisdom-Trek, Creating a Legacy.' If you would like to listen to any of our past 1566 treks or read the Wisdom Journal, they are all available at Wisdom-Trek.com. I encourage you to subscribe to Wisdom-Trek on your favorite podcast player so that each day will be downloaded to you automatically. One very simple but hard to pull off move, we're told, is the building block of what Paul calls "renewing our minds" and Jesus calls "becoming pure of heart and so seeing God" and some Eastern sages might call Enlightenment. Dave Schmelzer will walk through that one move and then pull back the curtain to chat briefly about why this move is so central to our hopes of experiencing such cosmic things. We continue our sermon series in Mark looking at 3:20-30. Jesus again is confronted by the religious leaders now as they make assessments on how he is able to perform these miracles. But not only the religious leaders but even his close family is concerned for him. What we'll see this morning is that we all are on a side as it relates to Jesus, but whose side are you on? How you answer that question has eternal significance. Read Online: Mark 3:20-30 Listen Here: Enter the link to the audio between the quotes on this line. Luke 17:20-37 New International Version (NIV)The Coming of the Kingdom of God20 Once, on being asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, Jesus replied, “The coming of the kingdom of God is not something that can be observed, 21 nor will people say, ‘Here it is,’ or ‘There it is,’ because the kingdom of God is in your midst.”[a]22 Then he said to his disciples, “The time is coming when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man, but you will not see it.23 People will tell you, ‘There he is!’ or ‘Here he is!’ Do not go running off after them. 24 For the Son of Man in his day[b] will be like the lightning, which flashes and lights up the sky from one end to the other. 25 But first he must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation.26 “Just as it was in the days of Noah, so also will it be in the days of the Son of Man. 27 People were eating, drinking, marrying and being given in marriage up to the day Noah entered the ark. Then the flood came and destroyed them all.28 “It was the same in the days of Lot. People were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building. 29 But the day Lot left Sodom, fire and sulfur rained down from heaven and destroyed them all.30 “It will be just like this on the day the Son of Man is revealed. 31 On that day no one who is on the housetop, with possessions inside, should go down to get them. Likewise, no one in the field should go back for anything. 32 Remember Lot’s wife! 33 Whoever tries to keep their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life will preserve it. 34 I tell you, on that night two people will be in one bed; one will be taken and the other left.35 Two women will be grinding grain together; one will be taken and the other left.” [36] [c]

In this session, Jesus initiates a call to national repentance, warning Israel in a parable (of a fruitless fig tree) that they will be cut down and out if they don't repent of their disbelief. He then reminds them of the parables of the mustard seed and the leaven.MP3 Download SESSION NOTES I. Jesus' Call To National & Individual Repentance.A. Luke 13:1-5 II. The Parable Of The Fig Tree.A. This Sunday, October 14, we begin a new sermon series "A Grace-Full Life." The companion book is available to purchase this Sunday. God's grace comes to us in four movements: "Even There, Even Now, Even More, and Even Then;" that is, prevenient grace, justifying grace, sanctifying grace, and glorifying grace. It all about living our God's all-reaching, soul-saving, character-shaping, never-ending love. We'll begin with a message on prevenient grace, which declares that no matter where you're from, who you are, or what you've done that God unconditionally loves you. It means that God is at work in our lives long before we are consciously aware and able to respond to it. God is with us before we know it!
