Welcome to Day 1703 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me.This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to WisdomA Good Leader – Daily WisdomWelcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps. We are on Day 1703 of our Trek, and it's time to explore another nugget of wisdom, which includes an inspirational quote along with some wise words from Gramps for today's trek. Wisdom is the final frontier in gaining true knowledge. We are on a daily trek to create a legacy of wisdom, seek out discernment and insights, and boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Hello, my friend; this is Gramps. Thanks for coming along on today's trek as we increase Wisdom and Create a Living Legacy. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs%2016%3A16&version=NLT (Proverbs 16:16) How much better to get wisdom than gold, and sound judgment than silver!    If you apply the words you hear today, over time, it will help you become more healthy, wealthy, and wise as you continue your daily trek of life. So let's jump right in with today's nugget: Today's quote is from Franklin D. Roosevelt, and it is: A good leader can't get too far ahead of his followers. A Good Leader One aspect of being a good leader is to make sure those you are supposed to be leading are still following you. Unfortunately, one lesson that I had to learn as a young leader of our company and other organizations is that I was moving forward at such a brisk pace that I lost sight of those who were supposed to follow. Not only that, as my wonderful bride would have to remind me, I had not only left my followers in the dust, I just plowed over several followers in my haste to move forward. So as a leader of others, whether you are young or old, keep in mind that you need to assure that you are still being followed and that your team knows where they are heading. So, every once in a while, put yourself in the shoes of your followers and ask this question: Would I be willing to follow this person? There are many facets needed to be an excellent leader, and there are several ways to develop leadership qualities. One way is through practice. Be aware of the skills you need to develop and find opportunities to use those skills. Another way is through professional development through the use of a mentor or training course. Finally, as with every aspect of life, always be humble and willing to learn. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Luke%2022%3A26&version=NLT (Luke 22:26) But among you, it will be different. Those who are the greatest among you should take the lowest rank, and the leader should be like a servant. We are on Day 1690 of our Trek, and it's time to explore another nugget of wisdom, which includes an inspirational quote along with some wise words from Gramps for today's trek. If you apply the words you hear today, over time, it will help you become more healthy, wealthy, and wise as you continue your daily trek of life. So let's jump right in with today's nugget: Today's quote is from Bernard Meltzer, and it is: A friend is someone who understands your past, believes in your future, and accepts you just the way you are. An Accepting Friend Throughout our lives, we have very few close friends. Your true friends are the ones who understand you and don't hold your past against you. Instead, they will hope with you and help you achieve your dreams for the future.  Most importantly, a good friend will accept you just the way you are and help you become all that God intended you to be. We have such few close friends during our lifetime because it requires an investment of time, genuine concern, and love to maintain the bonds of friendship. In my observation, it appears that women desire a greater need for multiple close friends, while my men are pleased with one or two. On a personal level, having Paula as my primary close friend is sufficient for me. Due, in part, to the schedule we maintain with work, exercise, Bible study time, and investing in our kids and grandkids, it is undoubtedly a fulfilling life for me. The key is to be a good friend to others and a close friend to those you love most. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs%2012%3A26&version=NLT (Proverbs 12:26) The godly give good advice to their friends; the wicked lead them astray. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1%20John%204%3A7&version=NLT (1 John 4:7) Dear friends, let us continue to love one another, for love comes from God. Anyone who loves is a child of God and knows God.  As you ponder this nugget of wisdom for yourself, please encourage your friends and family to join us and then come along tomorrow for another day of ‘Wisdom-Trek, Creating a Legacy.' Nothing will lift up your soul more than God-exalting worship. You were created to derive your glory and identity from God's glory and identity. And whenever you disassociate your existence from the worship of God, you are disconnected in some way even from your own soul. That's why to worship God, to lift your eyes to him, to incline your heart to him, sometimes you first have to speak to yourself and tell yourself to worship God. To praise God. There's a real you that needs to guide your brain and body into the real narrative of God's glory and presence through worship. So one thing important that we do in worship is speak to our own soul. That's what David does in Psalm 103. And that's the first and last thing we see again in Psalm 104. But in this Psalm the emphasis is on meditating on the I AM by noticing creation. Jesus does exactly this in https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew%206%3A26&version=NIV (Matthew 6:26) when he tells us to “look at the birds of the air”, and again in https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew%206%3A28-34&version=NIV (Matthew 6:28), “see how the flowers of the field grow.” Like Psalm 104, Jesus meditated on God by seeing how creation reflects his wisdom, glory and care. We've all been indoctrinated by the permeating narrative of naturalism. Creation dissociated from God. Psalm 104 reminds us to remind ourselves what Jesus knew: all creation reflects God's wisdom, glory, and care. Psalm 104 ESV 1 Bless the LORD, O my soul! O LORD my God, you are very great! You are clothed with splendor and majesty, 2 covering yourself with light as with a garment, stretching out the heavens like a tent.  3 He lays the beams of his chambers on the waters; he makes the clouds his chariot; he rides on the wings of the wind;  4 he makes his messengers winds, his ministers a flaming fire.  5 He set the earth on its foundations, so that it should never be moved.  6 You covered it with the deep as with a garment; the waters stood above the mountains.  7 At your rebuke they fled; at the sound of your thunder they took to flight.  8 The mountains rose, the valleys sank down to the place that you appointed for them.  9 You set a boundary that they may not pass, so that they might not again cover the earth.  10 You make springs gush forth in the valleys; they flow between the hills;  11 they give drink to every beast of the field; the wild donkeys quench their thirst.  12 Beside them the birds of the heavens dwell; they sing among the branches.  13 From your lofty abode you water the mountains; the earth is satisfied with the fruit of your work.  14 You cause the grass to grow for the livestock and plants for man to cultivate, that he may bring forth food from the earth  15 and wine to gladden the heart of man, oil to make his face shine and bread to strengthen man's heart.  16 The trees of the LORD are watered abundantly, the cedars of Lebanon that he planted.  17 In them the birds build their nests; the stork has her home in the fir trees.  18 The high mountains are for the wild goats; the rocks are a refuge for the rock badgers.  19 He made the moon to mark the seasons; the sun knows its time for setting.  20 You make darkness, and it is night, when all the beasts of the forest creep about.  21 The young lions roar for their prey, seeking their food from God. 22 When the sun rises, they steal away and lie down in their dens.  23 Man goes out to his work and to his labor until the evening.  24 O LORD, how manifold are your works! In wisdom have you made them all; the earth is full of your creatures.  25 Here is the sea, great and wide, which teems with creatures innumerable, living things both small and great.  26 There go the ships, and Leviathan, which you formed to play in it.  27 These all look to you, to give them their food in due...

How do you navigate difficult relationships? How do you handle deep disagreements with people you love? What does it look like to deal with conflict when the person you're at odds with is a family member or a close friend? On this “best of”  episode of God Hears Her, Eryn and Elisa revisit a previous conversation with Patricia Raybon as she shares her story of navigating a complicated relationship and offers practical wisdom for those of us who may find ourselves in a similar situation.   About our guest:  Patricia Raybon is an award-winning author and journalist and a writer for both Our Daily Bread Ministries and DaySpring's (in)courage Blog. She guides people into conversations on faith, race, and grace, and lives out her practical wisdom through relationships with people from different ethnic and faith backgrounds. Her most recent book is titled Undivided: A Muslim Daughter, Her Christian Mother, Their Path to Peace.     Notes and Quotes:  “[The topic of] race relations still confuses, worries, angers, and surprises people . . . But as I look at history, there has never been a time where people were not divided by race or ethnicity.” “Our stories are not our own . . . What I discovered is that these personal stories are not mine. They give the people that read them permission to reflect on their own lives.” “Every mother has a dream of what her family is going to look like, and when that dream is rejected, there is a grieving period.” “The Lord encouraged me to love her [my daughter], and trust Him.” “We are still able to be a family even though the details of our conflict have not been resolved.” “We agreed to respect our differences, and I agreed to respect the choice she had made. Not to accept the choice, but to respect [her].” “People love the stories when people find their way back to the faith, but that is not always the end of the story . . . Know that sometimes God is still writing.” “When you model that respect, it invites it back.” In the digital world today, we can almost always find people being hateful. “Tolerance allows my family to keep going.”   Links/Books/Resources Mentioned In Show:  Show Notes on godhearsher.org God Hears Her website: https://www.godhearsher.org/ Share the love by giving this episode a 5-star rating on iTunes!  https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/god-hears-her-podcast/id1511046507?utm_source=applemusic&utm_medium=godhearsher&utm_campaign=podcast Order God Sees Her: 365 Devotions for Women by Women on Amazon.  https://amzn.to/32lYSgh Order Patricia's Book: My First White Friend: https://amzn.to/3heKCvd Order Patricia's Book: Undivided: A Muslim Daughter, Her Christian Mother, Their Path to Peace https://amzn.to/3ifqj2e Free eBooklet to Download: Clinging to Hope in the Storm. https://discoveryseries.org/courses/clinging-to-hope-in-the-storm/ Patricia's Instagram: patriciaraybon Elisa's Instagram: elisamorganauthor Eryn's Instagram: eryneddy   Verses Mentioned in Show:  Romans 8:26 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. What is to Prevent Me from Being Baptized?

May 2, 2021. In today's sermon we learn more about the story from Acts chapter 8 of Philip and the Ethiopian Eunuch — the foreign, dark-skinned person who does not conform to gender norms — and ask what is to prevent us or anyone from being baptized. Readings: Acts 8:26-40, John 15:1-8 *** Transcript *** In the relatively new, but definitely classic Disney movie “Zootopia,” bunny Judy Hopps has always been… different. In a world that claims to be inclusive — where anyone can be anything — Zootopia is still largely divided into predator and prey, and you are expected to fit in to whichever group you are born into. So it is assumed that Judy the bunny will do what her entire bunny family has always done — farm carrots. But Judy knows she was born to be a police officer. Her passion for making the world a better place gets her into trouble with bullies, who want to knock her down, and her parents, who wish she would settle for the easy road and not make things so hard for herself and them. In spite of the challenges, Judy does become a police officer, but finds that her colleagues don't take her seriously, and her chief relegates her to parking duty. As the story unfolds, Judy stumbles onto an unsolved case, and in trying to solve it, she becomes friends with Nick Wilde, a fox. Judy unwittingly hurts Nick deeply when her own tendency to see all predators as dangerous “others” gets the best of her. She realizes that while she has struggled to claim her place as a bunny police officer, Nick has been rejected his whole life because people didn't believe a predator like him could ever belong anywhere — and Judy herself wasn't as ready to embrace Nick the fox as she had thought. In the gospels, Jesus often calls people to recognize the walls they have put up between them and others. He shocks by making an outsider, the Good Samaritan, the hero of a parable, and eats with all kinds of people seen as “other.” Jesus is always reaching to the margins and once, Jesus himself gets called out when he refuses to help the Syrophoenician woman whose daughter is ill, and she tells him: even the dogs get to eat the scraps from the table. Of course, Jesus then heals the girl. And I have often wondered, was Jesus trying to teach us a lesson in what not to do, or did he in his humanity also need to be taught? In the early days of what would become the Christian church, chronicled in the Book of Acts that provides our first readings in the Easter season, the followers of Jesus debated about who could belong and who couldn't belong, and what they had to do to belong. The Spirit kept showing them that all people are children of God and welcome into God's promises. After the initial coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, the Spirit anointed a group of gentiles, and that led to their baptism, if only because the Apostles could hardly deny baptism to people God had so clearly chosen. In the heat of debate about whether or not following Judaic dietary laws should be required, Peter had a dream in which God revealed to him that no one should be excluded from the fellowship for what they eat. Over and over, the gospel expands the circle, continually challenging us to welcome those who seem outside. The promises of baptism are for all people, but especially for those on the margins. Today's story is no different. The Ethiopian Eunuch, although he was a Jew and he carried some power and authority in the court in which he served, was an outsider on many counts. He was a foreigner, he was viewed as “exotic” because of his dark skin, and he'd been surgically altered — possibly by force — so that he was outside of gender norms. None of that prevents the Spirit from guiding Philip to head to the south, follow a deserted road, find a random chariot, and join the Eunuch as he studied Isaiah. Philip shares the gospel with him, and it never occurs to the Eunuch that it might not be for him. They pass by water, and the Eunuch speaks a profound statement of faith: “Look, here is water! What is to prevent me from being baptized?” What indeed? There was water, and the Word of God. And then and there, the Eunuch and Philip claim that the promises of God have no limits. We don't know anything else of the Ethiopian Eunuch, except that he goes on his way rejoicing. It strikes me that, as an Ethiopian, dark-skinned, high court official, he is in the perfect position to carry the good news to new lands. The Spirit, I believe, didn't send Philip to the Eunuch in spite of who he was, but because he was uniquely equipped to embody the love, forgiveness, and faithfulness of a God who knows no boundaries. The Eunuch knew without question that God's promises were for him, in all his uniqueness. Judy Hopps knew without question that she was uniquely equipped to make the world a better place as a bunny police officer, no matter what anyone else thought. As colleagues and I gathered this week to reflect on these texts, we wondered, what would it look like if we lived the truth that all people really are fully included in the gospel? We realized that we pray for this every week, in the Lord's Prayer, asking that God's kingdom and will be done on earth... not just for some, but for all creation. It means letting go of needing to understand, needing to gate-keep, needing to have some control over how things look and how they are done. It means letting go of our own vision and embracing God's vision instead. We humans will never fully be able to grasp it in this life, but we do get glimpses, and it is the gospel nevertheless. My colleagues and I recognized the power of the gospel to heal and transform us and our communities, no matter how imperfectly we embody it. We shared from the witness of our own lives and those we care for that when God's expansive love is embraced and embodied in people around us, it can actually reduce the depression, isolation, and even risk of suicide that comes from being systematically cast out. The challenge of all this is that, for those of us who “fit” easily in different ways, embracing the expansiveness of the gospel, allowing the Spirit to remove the walls and barriers that leave others outside, means being willing to be uncomfortable. Judy was really uncomfortable as she faced her own prejudices and saw the harm that she had done, and she and Nick had to have really hard conversations. In the end, the walls within them and between them that kept them from being who they were created to be fell apart as they claimed their truth. And as easy as it seems for Philip to seek out the Eunuch and baptize him, that was clearly the work of the Spirit, sending and snatching and sending again. And we know from all of the stories of the early church just how much conflict, confusion, and even anger had to be worked through as the Spirit revealed herself to them. Like Judy and Nick, and the people of the early church, we today continue to come up against our own walls and barriers, and the Spirit continues to blow through and take them down because she will not be contained. Today we celebrate the good news of a God so expansive that she embraces a foreign, dark-skinned person who does not conform to gender norms, and connects us all to one another and themselves as surely as branches connect to the vine to receive life and nourishment. Like Mr. Jesse pointed out, we are connected to God, and to each other, and all of creation. The gift of this is that we can help one another feel the expansiveness and connectedness of the love of God when we can't sense it for ourselves. Beyond anything else, it is what we were created to do. Thanks be to God. *** Keywords *** 2021, Christ Lutheran Church, Webster Groves, sermon, podcast, transcript, YouTube, video, Pastor Meagan McLaughlin, Acts 8:26-40, John 15:1-8

It's a conspiracy that increases my faith in the gospel. I'm amazed at how often we see the Bible's one story threaded all throughout Scripture, but written centuries apart. This one story of the Bible, written over a period of 1,500 years by more than 40 different authors, most of whom never even knew each other, is a conspiracy indeed, but not of humans. It's a conspiracy of the Holy Spirit. Telling ultimately one amazing story of God becoming the perfect human King in order to restore https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Genesis%201%3A26-28&version=NIV (his plan for his humanity) to rule and care for and continue his work of creation. A world exploding with the beauty and glory and wonder of God, that rejoices in and reflects his glory and love and beauty and goodness and wisdom and faithfulness. I want to be in THAT story! And to be in that story we must learn to worship God in the Spirit and truth (https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=John%204%3A23-24&version=NIV (John 4:23-24)). And a great place to worship in the Spirit and truth of this incredible story is in Isaiah 11, written centuries before Jesus was born. Let's talk about it and worship together in this episode! Isaiah 11:1–9 ESV 1 There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit. 2 And the Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD. 3 And his delight shall be in the fear of the LORD. He shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide disputes by what his ears hear, 4 but with righteousness he shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth; and he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked. 5 Righteousness shall be the belt of his waist, and faithfulness the belt of his loins. 6 The wolf shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat, and the calf and the lion and the fattened calf together; and a little child shall lead them. 7 The cow and the bear shall graze; their young shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. 8 The nursing child shall play over the hole of the cobra, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the adder's den. 9 They shall not hurt or destroy in all my holy mountain; for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD as the waters cover the sea. Do you sometimes think that your desire for greatness and glory is pride? Do you sometimes feel guilty for that as if somehow that's an inordinate desire that you need to confess as pride? The desire for greatness and glory is actually not the same as pride. Pride is in fact a virus that hijacks that desire. But the desire for greatness and glory is God given. It's what God intended for you as part of humanity because it's what God intended in creating humanity in his image (https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Genesis%201%3A26-28&version=NIV (Genesis 1:26-28)). In actuality, the gospel is God restoring us to greatness and glory (https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Romans%208%3A16-21&version=NIV (Romans 8:16-21)). One of the ways that we live a bigger life is to develop a biblical vocabulary for prayer that keeps us in this bigger story — keeps our lives in the narrative of the gospel. And Psalm 85 is a great psalm for that. Listen in with me and let's see how. Psalm 85 ESV 2 You forgave the iniquity of your people; you covered all their sin. 4 Restore us again, O God of our salvation, and put away your indignation toward us!  6 Will you not revive us again, that your people may rejoice in you? 7 Show us your steadfast love, O LORD, and grant us your salvation.  8 Let me hear what God the LORD will speak, for he will speak peace to his people, to his saints; but let them not turn back to folly.  9 Surely his salvation is near to those who fear him, that glory may dwell in our land.  10 Steadfast love and faithfulness meet; righteousness and peace kiss each other.  11 Faithfulness springs up from the ground, and righteousness looks down from the sky.  12 Yes, the LORD will give what is good, and our land will yield its increase.  13 Righteousness will go before him and make his footsteps a way. December 20, 2020. Have you ever had a moment when you realized that your whole life was changing, that something was emerging that you couldn’t quite see yet? This year, of all years, we really need to know that there is something much bigger than us going on, that there is order in this chaos that we are living. Readings: 2 Samuel 7:1-11, 16, Psalm 89:1-4, 19-26, Luke 1:26-56 *** Transcript *** Have you ever had a moment when you realized that your whole life was changing, that something was emerging that you couldn’t quite see yet? I can think of several times when I knew that transformation and mystery was happening — and fear, even terror. When I first said out loud that I was gay. When I moved into my first apartment, living on my own for the first time. When I made the decision to leave my job of nine years and go back to school full time. And when I got the phone call from the Call Committee here at Christ Lutheran, one Sunday morning just about a year ago. My pastor at my home congregation describes me as having a look of shock and wonder and disbelief as I shared the news with her a year ago. I'm not much of an astronomer, but my wife knows enough to be able to point out Mars and Venus and Jupiter in the sky at night, and I can usually spot them when she does. And I do enjoy looking at the stars, even if I can’t find any constellation besides the Big Dipper. There is something about the stars that, like the ocean, takes me out of the minutiae of my daily life, and reminds me just how big this world is, and just how small I am. The wise people knew far more about the night sky than I do. And although Jesus hadn’t been born yet, and they had no idea what it meant, they knew because of what they saw that something was up. The wise people probably didn’t suddenly see the star after Jesus’ birth, and begin their journey after he had been born. They had been watching the sky for years, and the unique star that they saw probably caught their eyes months prior to that sacred night in the stable in Bethlehem. And when they saw it, they knew that the world was about to change. They knew that something was about to happen that was worth traveling for days or weeks or months, worth lying to King Herod, worth giving up their treasure for. And soon, the wise people will be greeting a child whose birth was revealed to them by the stars they watched at night — the child whose birth, as insignificant as it might have seemed, would change everything. Jesus hasn’t been born yet, but the wise people already see it coming. They are living, as we Lutherans do, in a world that is, and is not yet. Mary sang of it in our gospel today, and in our opening hymn from Holden. After hearing from the angel what was going to happen and traveling to see Elizabeth. Mary’s song is really quite remarkable, as Debie Thomas points out in her blog this week. The angel brought Mary news that would shake any unmarried teenager — she is pregnant, with no good way to explain how that happened, and by tradition and law could be easily punished, beaten, ostracized, even killed. And yet, when she greets Elizabeth, her first words are ones of deep joy: “My spirit rejoices in God.” I can only imagine that her journey to Elizabeth must have been quite a wrestling — with herself, with God, reconciling and trying to understand what has just happened to her. Mary goes on to say that God has seen her in her humanness — poor; female in a world that didn’t value women; living in a brutal, occupied land; young, not yet married. God saw her just as she was, and was mindful of her. Somehow, out of all the people in the world, out of all the people in Nazareth, God saw and knew Mary intimately. And he was mindful of her. Then Mary the prophet, who was living in a broken world, full of injustice and hunger and poverty, saw and claimed the vision of God’s promise already at work. God has not only seen Mary, but all who are on the edge, as the hungry are filled and the marginalized and forgotten and abused ones are lifted up. The strong and the powerful, it seems, are already taken care of in this world, so God is especially mindful of those who have been pushed aside. And in the middle of the world still bound with injustice and pain, Mary sang of the world she knew God was bringing into being. “He has performed mighty deeds with his arm; he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts. He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble. He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty.” As Mary sings, she echoes the faith and the hope of many who came before her — Hannah, and Hagar, and the psalmist, and all the prophets, who proclaimed the hope and promise that is now, but not quite yet. Jesus hasn’t been born yet, but the wise people are on their way, following signs in the world our God created that pointed to things much bigger than themselves. And this year of all years, a year of pandemics and fires and elections and racial tensions, so much chaos, we really need to know that there is something much bigger than us going on, that there is order in this chaos that we are living. And in our time, that transformation that Mary speaks of, that the wise people saw coming, continues. Christmas isn’t here yet, but we know Christ is coming. And our world is in just as much need of transformation, healing, and re-creation, as the world the wise people traveled 2000 years ago. The prophets of today are claiming the promise anew, like Kelly Brown Douglas claiming that God is freedom, William Barber II declaring that people on the margins are seeking transformation and justice and healing and not a return to a disparate normal, Valarie Kauer’s revelation that the chaos we are living in is the darkness of the womb, not the darkness of the tomb, and that it will bring new life and not death. Jupiter and Saturn are close to aligning, and tomorrow they will come together to show us a sign. Astronomers today think that what we will be seeing in the sky if we venture out tomorrow evening after sunset is perhaps the same sign the wise ones saw so many years ago, the star that gave a glimpse of the promises of God to come that led the wise people to Bethlehem. The very same star that showed them that something new, something world-changing, was about to happen. In this time of COVID-19, as we have stayed away from our church building for a time, we have learned what Nathan tried to tell David so long ago — God is building a house, has been building it for millennia, a house not of brick and mortar but of people, of us. And Christ Lutheran family, God is still building us up, inspiring us, breathing new life, healing, and transformation into this broken world. We can look to the skies as the wise people did, and know that Christ is coming. We have just a few days left — I bet some of the kids could tell us even how many hours we have left — and in this moment we join all the people who for millennia have been claiming and proclaiming the promise. This was not a one-time event that happened 2000 years ago and was complete, but a movement of the Spirit of God that began with creation and continues on today. We are not alone. We can see the star, hear the words of the angel Gabriel, and know that something new is happening. With the prophets of yesterday and today, we can embrace all the change and fear and grief and wonder that that brings. And then, we can join Mary in joy, promise, and hope, and sing with her as our spirits rejoice in the promise coming to us in Christ. Thanks be to God. *** Keywords *** 2020, Christ Lutheran Church, Webster Groves, sermon, podcast, transcript, YouTube, video, Pastor Meagan McLaughlin, 2 Samuel 7:1-11, 16, Psalm 89:1-4, 19-26, Luke 1:26-56, COVID-19, coronavirus

December 6, 2020 | Pastor Nathan Elms Some of the most significant spiritual lessons are learned from the most unlikely people. Such is the case with the story of Simon of Cyrene. We know very little about this figure who, like a small drop in a giant bucket of water, could easily go unnoticed. But what we do know about Simon should be enough to draw us in close and to draw great encouragement from, especially during these long and uncertain days. I believe Simon has much to teach us on what it means to follow Jesus in the great interruptions of life. (Read Luke 23:26) https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Luke+23%3A26&version=MSG Life Interrupted Simon had come to Jerusalem for a totally different purpose but he left encountering Jesus. Maybe there’s a Simon watching this right now. Maybe you jumped on the Internet for a totally different purpose and you stumbled across this message. You didn’t just happen to tune into this. God wants to interrupt your life in the most beautiful way possible. He wants to use this message to free you from your sins like he did with Barabbas and to encourage you that for every cross we have to bear, we can know that it is under God's loving sovereign care. As the old hymn goes, “Shall Simon bear the cross alone and all the rest go free? No there’s a cross for everyone and there’s a cross for me”

Hello, my friend; I am Guthrie Chamberlain, your captain on our journey to increase Wisdom and Create a Living Legacy. Thank you for joining us today as we explore wisdom on our 2nd millennium of podcasts. Today is Day 1531 of our Trek, and it is Worldview Wednesday. Creating a Biblical Worldview is essential to have a proper perspective on today's current events. To establish a Biblical Worldview, you must have a proper understanding of God and His Word. This week, we will expand on the past course work as we continue reviewing the book from Dr. Michael S Heiser titled “Supernatural.” The book is an abbreviated version of his more comprehensive book, “The Unseen Realm.” I highly recommend both of these books. Creating a Biblical Worldview based on how the Old and New Testaments connect with God's overall plan for humanity is essential. This book review will help us understand what the Bible teaches about the unseen world, and why it matters. Divine Rebellions I ended week's Worldview Wednesday episode with the thought that free will in the hands of imperfect beings, whether divine or human, can have disastrous results. That's an understatement. Some catastrophes in the early chapters of the Bible, all of them involving both humans and supernatural beings, illustrate the point. Recall that God decided to share his authority with both divine beings in the supernatural realm and human beings on earth. That was the backdrop to God's statement in https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Genesis+1%3A26&version=NLT (Genesis 1:26), “Let us make humankind in our image,” and the fact that God then created humans in His image. Spiritual beings and humans are imagers of God. We share his authority and represent him as co-rulers. On the one hand, that was an excellent decision. Free will is part of being like God. We couldn't be like him if we didn't have it. Without free will, concepts like love and self-sacrifice die. If you are merely programmed to “love,” there is no decision in it. It isn't real. Scripted words and acts aren't genuine. Thinking about this takes me back to the last of the original Star Wars movies, The Return of the Jedi. The spirit of Obi-Wan Kenobi tells Luke his father, Darth Vader, “is more machine now than man.” Yet, in the end, we find that isn't true. Vader saves Luke from the emperor at the cost of his own life. Vadar wasn't just a programmed machine; his decision came from the heart, his humanity—his own free will. But there's a dark side to God's decision. Granting intelligent beings freedom means they can and will make wrong choices or intentionally rebel. That's guaranteed to happen, since the only truly perfect being is God. He's the only one he can trust. Free will is why things could, and did, go wrong in Eden. Trouble in Paradise Think about the setting in Eden. Adam and Eve aren't alone. God is there with his council. Eden is the divine/human headquarters for “subduing” the rest of the earth, as instructed in Genesis 1:26–28. Humans were to spread the life of Eden to the rest of the planet. We learn that at least one member of the council isn't happy with God's plans. Just as we saw in Genesis 1, there are hints in Genesis 3 that Eden is home to other divine beings. In https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Genesis+3%3A22&version=NLT (Genesis 3:22), after Adam and Eve have sinned, God says: “Behold, the man has become like one of us in knowing good and evil.” That phrase is the same sort of signpost we saw in Genesis 1:26 (“our image”).   We know the main...

Once and Future Kings We've had a brief introduction to God's heavenly council—his unseen family and task force. There's a lot more to all that—we need to look, especially, at how major players like Jesus and Satan fit into the picture. But before we return to what goes on in the unseen world, we need to think in a fresh way about ourselves. God's rule in the unseen spiritual world through his council is a template for his rule on earth—what theologians call the kingdom of God. All of that began in Genesis, in the garden of Eden. Eden—God's Home OfficeWhat's the first thing you think of when you hear “garden of Eden”? Most people I've talked to think of Adam and Eve. Eden was their home. That's where God put them (Genesis 2:15–25). But Eden was also God's home. Ezekiel refers to Eden as “the garden of God” (Ezekiel 28:13; 31:8–9). No surprise. What might be surprising is that, right after calling Eden “the garden of God,” Ezekiel calls it “the holy mountain of God” (v. 28:14). In many ancient religions, luxurious gardens and inaccessible mountains were considered the home of the gods. The Bible uses both descriptions for Eden. Eden was God's home and, therefore, where he conducted business. It was his headquarters, or home office.  And where God is, his council is with him. God's ImagersOne of the most important verses in the Bible tips us off that both God and his council were in Eden. In https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Genesis+1%3A26&version=NLT (Genesis 1:26), God says, “Let us make humankind in our image” (LEB, emphasis added). God announces his intention to a group. Who's he talking to? His heavenly host—his council. He's not talking to the other members of the Trinity, because God can't know something they don't! Here the group he's addressing learns what God has decided to do. The announcement is easy to understand. It would be like me saying to some friends, “Let's get pizza!” Let's do this! Clear enough. But there's something else we don't want to miss. God doesn't include the group in bringing about his decision. Unlike other divine council sessions we've seen, God's council members don't participate in this decision. When humankind is created in the next verse (Genesis 1:27), God is the only one creating humankind. The creation of humanity is something God handled himself. Going back to my pizza analogy, if I followed my announcement by driving everyone to the pizza place and insisted on paying, I would be the one doing all the work. That's what we see going on here. It makes sense that God would be the only one creating...

We live in a culture that tends to avoid negative emotions. It’s not uncommon to hear someone say to another person who’s angry, frustrated, or sad, “Just buck up! Look on the bright side!” But negative emotions are important. Elisa and Eryn talk about one of the most important emotions—anger—and they explore ways to follow the signs to discover what’s really going on in our hearts and minds.  Notes and Quotes:  “Anger is like a signal, it may not be the top emotion.”  “There is this aftermath of anger that just kind of lays before us. Sometimes there’s broken pieces of relationships, and sometimes there’s broken pieces of our own hearts.” “When we’re angry, could it be an expectation that’s not met?” “Anger can also come from blocked goals.” “Once I realized there are other layers under anger, I kind of felt a little more compassion for myself instead of all this self-condemnation and lostness.” Questions to ask yourself to get to the place of self-compassion: What’s this about? Why am I surprised? What has hurt me? Why am I hurting? “One thing I have learned in my relationship with the Lord is that He is so confident and so secure that my insecurity and my lack of confidence in the heat of the moment doesn’t impact Him or the way that He loves and sees me.” “He [God] probably is hurt that we self-condemn. I think He is probably disappointed that we self-separate from Him and accuse Him of being unloving when He is anything but [unloving].” When the anger switch flips, it’s easy to sin. “Anger can actually serve us and serve God’s purposes when we do our work with it.” Links/Books/Resources Mentioned In Show:  Show Notes on godhearsher.org God Hears Her website: https://www.godhearsher.org/ Subscribe on iTunes!  https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/god-hears-her-podcast/id1511046507?utm_source=applemusic&utm_medium=godhearsher&utm_campaign=podcast Order God Sees Her: 365 Devotions for Women by Women on Amazon.  https://amzn.to/32lYSgh Free eBooklet to Download: When Anger Burns. https://discoveryseries.org/courses/when-anger-burns/ Elisa’s Instagram: elisamorganauthor Eryn’s Instagram: eryneddy Verses Mentioned in Show:  Ephesians 4:26 NIV “‘In your anger do not sin’: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry.” https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Ephesians%204%3A26&version=NIV Romans 8:28 NIV “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Romans%208%3A28&version=NIV

Hello, my friend, I am Guthrie Chamberlain, your captain on our journey to increase Wisdom and Create a Living Legacy. Thank you for joining us today as we explore wisdom on our 2nd millennium of podcasts. Today is Day 1486 of our Trek, and it is Worldview Wednesday. Creating a Biblical Worldview is essential to have a proper perspective on today's current events. To establish a Biblical Worldview, you must have a proper understanding of God and His Word. This week, on our Worldview Wednesday episode, we will continue our study based on a course I recently completed taught by Dr. Michael Heiser. Our study is titled “Sons and Daughters of God: The Believer's Identity, Calling, and Destiny” Throughout this multi-week course, we will demonstrate that, in the Old Testament, “sons of God” and “holy ones” refers to supernatural beings whose Father is God and who work with God to carry out His will and that this divine family was present before humanity. By fully engaging with biblical texts such as Psalm 82; Psalm 89, and Deuteronomy 32:8–9, our study will show that this divine family functions as a template for God's human family. God desires of humans, as His imagers, to participate in His council. This study addresses issues such as polytheism, the nature of the (little ‘g') “gods,” and the uniqueness of Yahweh. Within this study, we will apply insights to the New Testament texts and shows how the metaphor of being in God's family informs our sense of identity and mission as believers. Being An Imager Of God·      Segment 22: Plurality Language IntroductionThe question before us is: How does the plural language of https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Genesis+1%3A26&version=NLT (Genesis 1:26) link God and humankind and the members of the heavenly host, the members of God's council, as it were, together? Let me read that verse again as we begin today. Then God said, “Let us make human beings in our image, to be like us. They will reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, the livestock, all the wild animals on the earth, and the small animals that scurry along the ground.” This is going to take a bit of abstract thinking for us. The plurality is important. To understand why it's important, though, we need to understand specifically the concept of the image of God, or as you'll hear me say, “the concept of imaging God.” RepresentationI will front-load a little bit of the perspective that we'll be getting into here. It's going to have something to do with representing God. We represent God in a specific way in our realm, the earthly realm, and spiritual beings represent God in their realm in whatever way God wants them to as well. So upfront, let's try to keep the idea of representation in mind, and that's going to be integral to this whole concept of the image of God. When we think about this and, typically, when people are taught about the image of God, several things are overlooked or assumed, and we're going to be careful not to do that. Characteristics of the Image of GodThe image of God in and of itself has certain characteristics in biblical thinking, biblical texts, biblical theology. That is that men and women possess it equally. It is the thing (whatever it is) that distinguishes humankind from all other earthly creatures. It is somehow linked to God in some way—the person, the character, the nature of God in some way. It's also, and this is a little less easy to spot, the image of God is also either possessed or not. That is, there is no hint in the text that you...

How do you navigate difficult relationships? How do you handle deep disagreements with people you love? What does it look like to deal with conflict when the person you’re at odds with is a family member or a close friend? Today on God Hears Her, Patricia Raybon joins Eryn and Elisa to share her story of navigating a complicated relationship and offers practical wisdom for those of us who may find ourselves in a similar situation. Bio of guest:  Patricia Raybon is an award-winning author and journalist and a writer for both Our Daily Bread Ministries and DaySpring’s (in)courage Blog. “Tolerance allows my family to keep going.” Links/Books/Resources Mentioned In Show:  Show Notes on godhearsher.org God Hears Her website: https://www.godhearsher.org/ Share the love by giving this episode a 5-star rating on iTunes!  https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/god-hears-her-podcast/id1511046507?utm_source=applemusic&utm_medium=godhearsher&utm_campaign=podcast Order God Sees Her: 365 Devotions for Women by Women on Amazon.  https://amzn.to/32lYSgh Order Patricia’s Book: My First White Friend: https://amzn.to/3heKCvd Order Patricia’s Book: Undivided: A Muslim Daughter, Her Christian Mother, Their Path to Peace https://amzn.to/3ifqj2e Free eBooklet to Download: Clinging to Hope in the Storm https://discoveryseries.org/courses/clinging-to-hope-in-the-storm/ Elisa’s Instagram: elisamorganauthor Eryn’s Instagram: eryneddy Verses Mentioned in Show:  Romans 8:26. I hadn’t done a lot of bread baking prior to COVID-19, but suddenly I've found myself making bread on a weekly basis, for the celebration of Communion. I use a really simple recipe — only four ingredients plus water. And there is no yeast in it. I put the flour, baking powder, salt, and oil in the bowl and add some water, and begin to turn it over and over with the spoon. If there’s still any flour left in the bowl then I add a little bit more water and turn it some more. And maybe a bit more — but not too much. Once all the flour is all mixed in, when there’s just the right amount of water, there is that moment when the bread dough becomes super stretchy and almost stringy, flaky-looking in a damp sort of way I think. That’s when I wash my hands (again) and mush the dough between them, digging my fingers in to be sure that any dry bits are well-mixed. And then I let it sit for about half an hour before I fry it in a pan. My favorite part is when the dough is just done enough to hold its shape really well, and I use the spatula to make the cross on the bread before I flip it over to cook the other side. Most weeks I make my bread on Fridays, and it sits wrapped in paper towel on the counter waiting for Sunday morning. I'm kind of shocked that none of my cats has discovered this routine yet, but maybe they just don’t like bread. Making the bread has become one of my favorite parts of the week, the mixing and the kneading and the frying and the crossing, and this ritual has brought new meaning to the sacrament for me, in its ordinary-ness. This weekly practice of taking such simple ingredients, come right out of God’s earth, to make the bread that feeds my body, connects me with generations of people in all times and all parts of the earth, who have done the same to feed their families. Generations of Christians who have made flour and water into loaves and wafers, poured the wine, and set the table for their Sunday Eucharist celebrations, for two thousand years now. Each Sunday as we celebrate Communion, I have felt nourished in body as well as spirit. It has surprisingly become one of my favorite meals of the week. And this week, I got to make bread with friends! Wednesday evening, Jack and Ruthie and Maggie and Megan, and their families and I, got together on Zoom, and we had the privilege of sharing this ritual together (thanks parents!) while we continued to learn and talk about what the sacrament of Communion means and the grace of finding God in the making, and the breaking, of the bread. The kingdom of God is like a tiny mustard seed that grows into a huge tree for the birds to nest in. The kingdom of God is like a bit of yeast — when it's mixed in with a whole bag of flour, it makes the whole loaf rise. The kingdom of God is like finding treasure while you are plowing your field. The kingdom of God is like sorting fish with nets. Not stories of grand miracles or royal parades, but ordinary folks doing ordinary things, and discovering that God is right there in the ordinary-ness. In An Altar in the World, Barbara Brown Taylor writes, “What is saving my life now is the conviction that there is no spiritual treasure to be found apart from the bodily experience of human life on earth. My life depends on engaging the most ordinary physical activities with the most exquisite attention I can give them. My life depends on ignoring all touted distinctions between the secular and the sacred, the physical and the spiritual, the body and the soul. What is saving my life now is becoming more fully human, trusting that there is no way to God apart from real life in the real world.” In the most ordinary of tasks, God shows up. In the most ordinary of things, God is present, and the ordinary is sacred. In the catechism, Luther explains that baptism reveals God’s grace not because of the ordinary water alone, but because in the water and the word and the promise of our God, God extends forgiveness of sins, rescues us from evil, and brings us new life. The sacrament of Communion reveals God’s grace, not because of the bread and the wine, but because in the bread and the wine and in the word and the promise of our God, God extends forgiveness, and salvation, and life. We as Lutheran Christians celebrate these sacraments, and in these moments of grace, we experience God making the ordinary sacred. Nourished and fed and forgiven and blessed in these sacraments, we can see God’s presence in all ordinary things. Deer in the yard. Tending your garden. Washing your dishes. Conversation about the Sunday scriptures with a friend. A headbutt from your kitty, or an affectionate lick from your puppy. And Paul reminds us in his letter to the Romans, God’s promise to be faithful has no limits. Even when everything is working against you, even when death surrounds you, even when it seems that there is no way out, when we are so confused and wounded and exhausted that we can’t string two words together, God is present. Because nothing, Paul says, nothing can separate us from God’s love. And so today, we come together to worship, we hear the promises of God in the scriptures, and with our friends Jack and Ruthie and Maggie and Megan, we celebrate the sacrament of Communion. And in the ordinary bread — or the crackers, or the waffle, or the cookies — with the word and the promise of our God, the grace of God is present with us. In our first reading today, we hear that Solomon could have chosen wealth or power as his gifts from God. But he didn’t. Instead, he chose to ask for God’s Spirit of Wisdom to change him, so that he might know God’s will, and be able to bring justice for God’s people. And as we are fed and nourished by the bread and the wine today, we see God in the ordinary. We too are empowered to embody the love and the mercy of our God. We too, like Solomon, are granted wisdom to know God’s will and be a voice for justice for all of God’s people. Jack, Ruthie, Maggie, and Megan, in your baptisms we celebrated the love and wisdom and justice and joy that you each bring into this world, and claimed the promise of God that you are God’s beloved child forever. Today, we celebrate with you the sacrament of Communion, and we are all strengthened and blessed by your presence in our family of faith. We pray that you will always know how much God loves you, that you will know you are forgiven when you make mistakes, and that you will see the presence of God in the ordinary things all around you. Thanks be to God. *** Keywords *** 2020, Christ Lutheran Church, Webster Groves, sermon, podcast, transcript, video, YouTube, Pastor Meagan McLaughlin, 1 Kings 3:5-12, Romans 8:26-39, Matthew 13:31-33, Matthew 13:44-52, coronavirus, An Altar in the World: A Geography of Faith, Barbara Brown Taylor, Jack Wood, Ruthie Helton, Maggie Ringkor, Megan Eftink, First Communion

Welcome to Day 1437 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me.This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to WisdomYou Can't Take It With You – Humor UnpluggedWisdom - the final frontier to true knowledge. Welcome to Wisdom-Trek! Where our mission is to create a legacy of wisdom, to seek out discernment and insights, to boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Hello, my friend, I am Guthrie Chamberlain, your Captain on our journey to increase Wisdom and Create a Living Legacy. Thank you for joining us today as we explore wisdom on our 2nd millennium of podcasts. This is Day 1437 of our Trek, and time for a 3-minute mini-trek called Humor Unplugged. Our Thursday podcast will provide a short and clean funny story to help you lighten up and live a rich and satisfying life. Something to cheer you and give a bit a levity in your life. We are told in https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs+15:30&version=NLT (Proverbs 15:30) A cheerful look brings joy to the heart; good news makes for good health. We are also encouraged in https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs+17:22&version=NLT (Proverbs 17:22) A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit saps a person's strength. Consider this your vitamin supplement of cheer for today. So let's jump right in with today's funny which is titled: You Can't Take It With YouOld snarling Sam, was a grumpy miserly man, had no friends. He did live a long life and was quite successful financially. Sam was known for rarely spending his wealth, and since he did not trust banks, he kept most of it in his home. After Sam turned 90, his health rapidly turned for the worst. Just before he died, he asked Dave his doctor, Lew his lawyer, and Mike, his minister, to gather around his bedside. Through a frail voice, Sam said, “I have always heard you can't take it with you, but I am going to prove you can, I have $300,000 in cash under my mattress. It's in three envelopes of $100,000 each. I want each of you to take one envelope now, and just before they throw the dirt on me, you throw the envelopes in.” A week later, Sam died, and his funeral soon followed. Dave, Lew, and Mike attended the funeral promised, and each threw his envelope into the grave. On the way back from the cemetery, the Mike, the minister said, “I don't feel exactly right. I'm going to confess. I needed $50,000 badly for a new church we're building, so I took out $50,000 and threw only $50,000 in the grave.” Dave, the doctor, hung his head in shame and said, “I, too, must confess. I am building a hospital and took $75,000 and threw in only $25,000.” Lew, the lawyer, said in a proud tone, “Gentlemen, I'm surprised, shocked, and ashamed of you. I don't see how you could hold out that money. I deposited the $100,000 into my personal bank account threw in my personal check for the full amount.” I hope that brought a smile to your face today. If it did pass your smile onto some else, we all could use a kind smile each day. Our Thursday thought is, “A miser grows rich by seeming poor; an extravagant man grows poor by seeming rich. Here is our verse for today: https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew%2016%3A26&version=NLT (Matthew 16:26) And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul? Is anything worth more than your soul?  Just as you enjoy these nuggets of humor, please encourage your friends and family to join us and then come along tomorrow for another day of ‘Wisdom-Trek, Creating a Legacy.' If you would like to listen to any of our past 1436 treks or read the Wisdom Journal, they are all available at Wisdom-Trek.com.  I encourage you to subscribe to Wisdom-Trek on your favorite podcast player so that each day will be downloaded to you automatically. Thank you for allowing me to be your guide,...

"And now, in 2 Samuel 7, God is making a promise to David that sounds a lot like His promise to Abraham ... But then He goes a step further" The Bible is a book of God's promises. It's a book containing every genre: supernatural conflict between God and the devil; romance between Him and the church; history behind God's promises; and mystery of how He'll resolve all the issues, which we're still waiting for Him to reveal. Even though we know what happens in the end, we don't know how. The Bible is full of stories, but, whatever the genre, God's promises remain constant. And they guide the plot of each narrative. Listen to this episode as David in 22 (https://www.thecrossingchurch.com/podcast-series/david-in-22-stories/) to show how God's promises are revealed through David. "It's actually for that exact reason that God won't allow David to build His temple." Do you ever ask God why you're not allowed to have something? Do you ask why you're not allowed to do something? David asked God why he wasn't allowed to build the Temple, and the answer comes back to this chapter of 2 Samuel 2 (https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=2+Samuel+2&version=NIV) . David was asking the wrong question. Someone else asked the right one, and it wasn't answered for centuries later: when Jesus came. Find out what the right question is and how Christ answered it from David in 22 (https://www.thecrossingchurch.com/podcast-series/david-in-22-stories/) . Luke 8:26-39 New International Version (NIV)Jesus Restores a Demon-Possessed Man26 They sailed to the region of the Gerasenes,[a] which is across the lake from Galilee. 27 When Jesus stepped ashore, he was met by a demon-possessed man from the town. For a long time this man had not worn clothes or lived in a house, but had lived in the tombs. 28 When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell at his feet, shouting at the top of his voice, “What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, don’t torture me!” 29 For Jesus had commanded the impure spirit to come out of the man. Many times it had seized him, and though he was chained hand and foot and kept under guard, he had broken his chains and had been driven by the demon into solitary places.30 Jesus asked him, “What is your name?”“Legion,” he replied, because many demons had gone into him. 31 And they begged Jesus repeatedly not to order them to go into the Abyss.32 A large herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside. The demons begged Jesus to let them go into the pigs, and he gave them permission.33 When the demons came out of the man, they went into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned.34 When those tending the pigs saw what had happened, they ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, 35 and the people went out to see what had happened. When they came to Jesus, they found the man from whom the demons had gone out, sitting at Jesus’ feet, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. 36 Those who had seen it told the people how the demon-possessed man had been cured. 37 Then all the people of the region of the Gerasenes asked Jesus to leave them, because they were overcome with fear. So he got into the boat and left.38 The man from whom the demons had gone out begged to go with him, but Jesus sent him away, saying, 39 “Return home and tell how much God has done for you.” So the man went away and told all over town how much Jesus had done for him.
