“And cast ye the unprofitable servant into the outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” So says Matthew 25:30, and in John Layman and Afu Chan's Outer Darkness, there is plenty of weeping–and so, so much gnashing of teeth. For their last Four-Color Flashback of the year, Paul and Arlo discuss Layman and Chan's 2018-19 Image/Skybound series, which imagines a far-flung future where spaceships need exorcists onboard and the dead can be resurrected so long as you cast a net wide enough to catch their souls. The boys discuss the book's ingenious mash-up of space opera and supernatural horror, how Layman & Chan expertly juggle a number of timelines, why the visceral splorches of Chan's art are so satisfying, and the depressing realities behind the series' cancellation.   NEXT: what if…we did another MCUTV episode with Hollywood's own Michael Holland? We'll be discussing, you guessed it, the animated Marvel series What If…? The best show on TV is on FX--well, FX on Hulu, that is. It's called Reservation Dogs, it was created by Sterlin Harjo and Taika Waititi, and it is about four Indigenous kids from Oklahoma dreaming of escape to California. To discuss this funny, heartbreaking show, Paul and Arlo are joined by pop culture writer extraordinaire Nikki Stafford. The gang discusses the show's subtle storytelling, its incredible cast, the way Harjo and his team thread the needle between tragedy and comedy, and how this series breaks ground for mainstream Native representation in America. Plus, Arlo almost killed Paul.   NEXT: second time's the charm; hopefully, we'll actually do a Four-Color Flashback on John Layman and Afu Chan's Outer Darkness.     BREAKDOWN 00:00:42  -  Intro / Guest 00:10:45  -  Reservation Dogs 01:25:45  -  Outro / Next     LINKS   ‘Stoodis!' & ‘Skoden' — ‘Reservation Dogs' Puts NDN Slang in Focus by Jeanette Centeno, powwows.com   “‘Reservation Dogs' Co-Creators Sterlin Harjo & Taika Waititi Talk Using Humor “To Subvert Expectations” In Indigenous Representation – TCA” by Alexandra Del Rosario, Deadline   “'Reservation Dogs' Creator Talks New FX Series,” All Things Considered “‘Reservation Dogs': The Interview” by Jonathan Sims, The Paper. Gobbledyween has come to a close for another year--and we're going out with a fang! To round out our month of frightening films, we've chosen a movie most people have probably never heard of: Rockula, a vampiric musical from 1990 starring Dean Cameron as the bloodsucking Ralph, cursed to try and win back the love of his immortal life every 22 years. We have also chosen to torture none other than Mimesis author Eric Sipple, who has been forced to endure this film with Paul and Arlo. The gang discusses mirror selves, farting bats, resentful stars, and of course, Bo Diddley.   NEXT: enough inner darkness, how about some Outer Darkness? For our next Four-Color Flashback, we explore the interstellar terror of John Layman and Afu Chan's 2018-19 Image series.     BREAKDOWN 00:00:40  -  Intro / Guest 00:09:36  -  Rockula 01:29:46  -  The Box Office Game! 01:52:26  -  Outro / Next     LINKS   Rockula Online        MUSIC “Rockula” by Los Straitjackets, Damas y Caballeros (2001) “Rockula” by Jesse Cutler, Test of Time (2008)     GOBBLEDYCARES National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: https://suicidepreventionlifeline.org/  Support AAPI communities and those affected by anti-Asian violence: https://www.gofundme.com/c/act/stop-aapi-hate Support the AAPI Civic Engagement Fund: https://aapifund.org/ Support Black Lives Matter and find anti-racism resources: https://blacklivesmatters.carrd.co/ Advocate for writers who might be owed money due to discontinuance of royalties: https://www.writersmustbepaid.org/  Help teachers and classrooms in need: https://www.donorschoose.org/ Do your part to remove the burden of medical debt for individuals, families, and veterans: https://ripmedicaldebt.org/ Register to vote: https://vote.gov/

This week Brian is out sick but Joe, Rebekah and Rod take control and review The Green Lantern, Outer Darkness, Empty Man and Dead Kings.                        (Brian's Pick) The Green Lantern #1 from DC COMICS written by Grant Morrison with art by Liam Sharp                                        Superstar writer Grant Morrison (Batman, All-Star Superman) returns to DC alongside red-hot artist Liam Sharp (The Brave AND the Bold, Wonder Woman) to launch a new, ongoing series: THE GREEN LANTERN!In this debut issue, when Earth's space cop, Hal Jordan, encounters an alien hiding in plain sight, it sets off a chain of events that rocks the Green Lantern Corps-and quite possibly the Multiverse at large-to its very core. There's an inter-galactic conspiracy afoot, as well as a traitor in the GL Corps' ranks, so strap in for more mind-bending adventures in this masterpiece in the making.                                         (Joe's Pick) Outer Darkness #1 from IMAGE COMICS written by John Laymen with art by Afu Chan                           Sci-fi and horror collide in this new series from the co-creator of CHEW!Mankind has colonized the galaxy, but during our interstellar travels, we discovered a terrifying secret out in the Outer Darkness of space. Join Captain Joshua Rigg and the crew of the starship Charon as they encounter demonic possessions, hauntings, cosmic horror, and more! All-star writer JOHN LAYMAN (CHEW) and artist AFU CHAN (Immortal Iron Fists) are ready to let you know that outer space is terrifying.                           (Rod's Pick) Dead Kings #1 from AFTERSHOCK COMICS written by Steve Orlando with art by Matthew Dow Smith                               Sasha never saw his younger brother...until the secret police made him disappear. Sasha Vasnetsov left Thrice-Nine-the dirty folklore world that limps along in the wreckage of a Technomagic War-thirty years ago and never looked back. But word that the secret police have sent his brother Gena to a work camp for the socially degenerate drags him back, with a promise to free Gena and return him to their mother before her fiftieth birthday. The only problem? Sasha isn't a fraction of the tough guy he tries to be, so if he's going to break back into Thrice-Nine...he'll need help. Sasha's only hope is Maria Kamenaya, a former Technomagic Warrior with hundreds of enemy kills to her name, betrayed by the country that made her when her honor conflicted with their agenda.Thrice-Nine took Sasha's brother, and it took Maria's heart. This quest is how they get both of those things back, in the steaming, lawless land of decapitated states...the land of DEAD KINGS.                                          (Rebekah's Pick) Empty Man #1 from BOOM! STUDIOS written by Cullen Bunn with art by Vanesa Del Rey                                      WHY WE LOVE IT: There's nothing scarier than horror that hits home-a tale of terror only one or two steps removed from our reality. THE EMPTY MAN is a dystopic version of the world we know, where a terrifying disease has taken on almost deific connotations. WHY YOU'LL LOVE IT: Cullen Bunn (THE SIXTH GUN, VENOM) and Vanesa R. Del Rey (HIT) are two of the most exciting talents in the industry, and perfectly in sync on this haunting new crime procedural. WHAT IT'S ABOUT: It's been one year since the first reported case of the Empty Man disease, and no drug has been able to slow its progress. The cause is unknown, and the symptoms include fits of rage, hideous hallucinations, suicidal dementia, followed by death, or a near lifeless, 'empty' state of catatonia. As murder cults rise nationwide, the FBI and CDC enter a joint investigation of the Empty Man, hoping to piece together clues to stop the cult and uncover a cure.
