Two authors consider how being a daughter shaped their relationship to motherhood

New books by Joy Harjo and Ruthie Ackerman focus on very different moments in the life cycle of motherhood. First, Harjo's new book Washing My Mother's Body is an illustrated version of a poem she wrote in order to process grief. Harjo, the 23rd U.S. Poet Laureate and member of the Muscogee Nation, never got to carry out an important ritual after her mother's death – but returns in the poem to take care of things left undone. In today's episode, Harjo speaks with NPR's Leila Fadel about that ritual and the potency of the mother-daughter relationship. Then, journalist Ruthie Ackerman grew up hearing family stories that made her believe she shouldn't become a mom. But years later, she learned pieces of those stories weren't true. The Mother Code is a new memoir exploring Ackerman's indecision around becoming a parent. In today's episode, she speaks with NPR's Juana Summers about viewing maternal ambivalence as the norm.To listen to Book of the Day sponsor-free and support NPR's book coverage, sign up for Book of the Day+ at plus.npr.org/bookofthedayLearn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

(LOS ANGELES, Calif.) - When you look at a gleaming new electric vehicle what do you see? We love our cars, that is not in question, and our new technologies- and lithium mining for batteries for these vehicles is where it all begins. I looked up “What is Green Technology?” on Investopedia and found this: What Is Green Tech? Green tech refers to a type of technology that is considered environmentally friendly based on its production process or its supply chain. Green tech— an abbreviation of "green technology"— can also refer to clean energy production, the use of alternative fuels, and technologies that are less harmful to the environment than fossil fuels. We began this series on Lithium mining and the mining of other metals needed to create and upgrade energy systems which are considered essential. But there are problems of policy, of the enforcement of laws, and of environmental inequality and landscape destruction. In my office, on the wall, was a page titled, "questions to ask about any new technology." It seems we can never ask enough.

In high school, Suzan learned about 3,000 racist sports mascots across the US, and a few years later, she started a foundation dedicated to eradicating those mascots. She was the primary plantiff on the lawsuit to change the name of the Washington R*dsk*ns (back in 1992!). When she went to a museum with her mother and discovered that their own property was on display in one of the exhibits, Suzan dedicated part of her life to repatriation lawsuits to get Native American artifacts out of museums and back to their rightful place. Her list of accomplishments is long, each one greater than the last. You'll have to listen to the episode to hear them all! — A Broad is a woman who lives by her own rules. In 2019, Joy Harjo was named the 23rd United States Poet Laureate, becoming the first Indigenous American to receive the honor. Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, she is a member of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation. Her unusually varied career has included painting, screenwriting, and playing the alto saxophone, as well as teaching and editing. Harjo is marking the occasion of her semi-centenary as a poet with two books: Weaving Sundown in a Scarlet Light, which collects 50 poems for 50 years, and Catching the Light, a meditation on “the why of writing poetry.” Her work stands at the crossroads, evoking both the deeply personal and the shared experience of generations, and in it we find Creek spirits and missing women, creation myths and truck stops. Through it all, her voice is unmistakable.Go beyond the episode:Joy Harjo's Catching the Light and Weaving Sundown in a Scarlet Light: Fifty Poems for Fifty YearsPeruse her back catalog of books and musicListen to our Read Me a Poem podcastTune in every week to catch interviews with the liveliest voices from literature, the arts, sciences, history, and public affairs; reports on cutting-edge works in progress; long-form narratives; and compelling excerpts from new books. Undisciplinary writer and translator JD Pluecker curates recordings that circle around themes of return, transformation, history, and the future. Pluecker introduces Joy Harjo finding what remains in the wreckage (“New Orleans”), Andrea Lawlor considering how one thing turns into another (excerpt from “Paul Take the Form of a Mortal Girl”), and C.D. Wright turning herself into an ancestor (“Our Dust”). Pluecker closes by reading “Return Unsettlement,” which asks whether anything is ever quite gone or has ever quite arrived.Enjoy the full recordings of Harjo, Lawlor, and Wright reading for the Poetry Center on Voca:Joy Harjo (1987)Andrea Lawlor (2019)C.D.
