This week on Comics and Chronic the boys talk Local Man volume 2 by Tim Seeley and Tony Fleecs, published by Image Comics. If you haven't already go check out our episode on the first volume as well as our individual interviews with both Tim & Tony! “ Farmington's very own LOCAL MAN is called in to investigate a mysterious drowning on dry land. The problem is, Jack isn't legally allowed to be a superhero. Oh, also, he's sleeping with the police chief's wife. AND, there's a conspiracy theory gaining traction that Jack murdered America's most beloved champion. Now, Local Man, already in over his head, is drawn into another twisted case with dark ties to his superhero past.” But first the boys discuss America's heartthrob, Luigi Mangione! Anthony introduces a new sound effect for Cody. It's very obvious when Cody doesn't like the sound of something. We learn more about some characters' past in this volume along with getting a great tripping sequence with Crossjack. Anthony schools us an array of original Image characters that show up in this book. Jake & Anthony give brief thoughts on the Mister Miracle book by Tom King & Mitch Gerads. Is Crossjack's true power to cuck people? Is our fan Trey from New Zealand still out there? We briefly talk our excitement for the new DC film universe. To all our Commies and new listeners, start listening around episode 8! Cody tries to escape being Hodag and lord more to laugh at & learn. Tune in now! Thanks to iFanboy Patrons, it's Talksplode time. He's been on the show before, but that was before Mitch's Meteoric Rise™. Largely known as Tom King's most prolific collaborator on Sheriff of Babylon, Mister Miracle, Strange Adventures, and many Batman stories over the years. Now he's about to release his first non-Tom™ comic in years, working with Tim Seeley on the upcoming Peacemaker Presents: The Vigilante/Eagly Double Features #1. Plus you can learn more about his upcoming docu-series, The United States of Bourbon. You'll get that and some deep comic book craft talk, and the beauty of the nine panel grid. DCOCD is the DC Comics events podcast, where we look at every DC event in chronological order from Crisis on Infinite Earths to... we're not quite sure yet. The darkly violent Flashpoint universe is somehow back and no one is more surprised than Thomas Wayne who decides to do everything in his power to wipe out that reality to save his son. But why is Bruce in the main DC Universe staking everything on his failure? Paul is joined by first-time guest DC DAVE and the always sparkling LAUREL of the Wright On Network to discuss, critique, praise and ultimately rate and rank this event. Who are we? Who do we want to be? Sometimes, the truth is a lie well told. Tom King returns to the podcast for his most in-depth conversation, breaking down the themes of his iconic Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow run and why so much of his personal history wound up within it. Explore no further if you have not already read Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. We spoil everything. We've wanted to have this conversation with Tom King since we read the first issue, and it became utterly vital for our well-being after we read the last issue. We begin with the title and its significance at the start of the project versus its significance at the halfway point. From there, we consider Supergirl's quest alongside the vengeance-seeking Ruthye, how both characters are changed by the other, and just exactly what we're supposed to take away from that final page. A comic like Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow doesn't come around too often. Every creator involved, from King to artist Bilquis Evely to colorist Matheus Lopes to letter Clayton Cowles, is operating at the height of their powers. It seems impossible to replicate, yet the entire team returns to comic shops this week with Helen of Wyndhorn. And yeah, we've read the first issue, and we're already in awe of what they're cooking inside this Wizard of Oz meets Conan the Barbarian tale. Special Bonus! Learn Tom King's Secret Comic Book Couples Counseling origin. We'll say no more here, but it's a fun tidbit for podcast trivia seekers. Finally, we begin our episode celebrating this year's Awesome Con experience and the first-ever CBCC panel held on March 8th at 8:30 PM in Room 206 of the Washington DC Convention Center. Our thanks to everyone who came out for our counseling session. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow was originally published between August 2021 and April 2022. It's currently available in trade paperback from DC Comics, but a new Deluxe Hardcover edition will arrive on July 24th. Find it wherever rad books are sold. Continue this conversation with Tom King via Twitter, Threads, and Instagram. As always, Omnibus, the Digital Comic Store and Reader, sponsors our Referrals segment. This week, we selected two comic book titles on the site that satisfy this episode's themes. We won't spoil what they are here, but if you click the links below, you'll be immediately escorted to those books. Howard and maybe even Lovecraft. Were there any other classical authors you turned to in constructing the narrative?I've been loving your use of captioning in The Penguin of late, but really all of your captioning shows a strong sense of character and storytelling. When scripting a story like Helen of Wyndhorn, do you start with captions or elsewhere?Early press materials compared this series to Conan the Barbarian and Wizard of Oz, both evoke fantasy, weirdness, and fights, can we expect all those and more in this series?Do you have a favorite iteration of Wizard of Oz and a favorite run on Conan the Barbarian?I've loved Bilquis' work since first seeing her work with Sugar & Spike, with Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow under your belts, do you have a shorthand working on Helen of Wyndhorn?Something I've adored about your work is how to pushes the comics format, which I especially saw with Danger Street. Is this something you're conscience of? Are you toying with anything in comics format with Helen of Wyndhorn?I imagine we're in for some creatures in this series, what goes into creature design from your perspective? Last time we spoke you had said Danger Street was done and getting finished, Gotham City Year One was finished, have you scripted every issue of Helen of Wyndhorn?

Woe unto the city where the sidekick dies. In Minor Threats, Jordan Blum and Patton Oswalt plunge into the chaotic relationship dynamics that fuel the best spandex stories, shifting the microscope toward the C-list, well, maybe the D-List "super" crooks that frequently fall under the boots of top-tier heroes and villains. Kid Dusk is dead. The sinister Stickman pulled the trigger. Now, The Insomniac is on a rampage to secure justice...vengeance...payback. Tomayto, tomahto. Hoping to restore normalcy and score a little promotion, a group of small-time henchmen seeks the bounty on Stickman's head. Minor Threats is a dense four-issue series from Dark Horse Comics, beautifully illustrated by Scott Hepburn. The three artists create a massive canvas with endless possibilities. Jordan Blum and Patton Oswalt pick at these niggling strands that have teased their imaginations since childhood. Their comic celebrates everything we love about superhero stories while classically exploring the world outside our windows. They're merely following in the footsteps of Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, and Joe Simon. Chatting with Jordan Blum and Patton Oswalt this week was a giddy pleasure. The conversation splinters into numerous directions, at once continuing our seemingly never-ending CBCC Batman discourse while considering the cathartic and bleak comedy found within Biggie Smalls' lyrics. Our discussion covers a lot of ground, Wyatt Earp, The Wire, Sergio Aragonés, Grant Morrison, and more. You are in for a serious geeky treat. Minor Threats is now available in single issues, but the trade paperback will arrive in comic book shops on June 21st. You can find your nearest comics retailer HERE. Mordru has arrived! This is a giant story for me Read it on the app, in the Archive, and in the Treasury reprint he has had since he was 11. Classic and amazing Shooter/Swan Legion. To say I am in a good mood and this comic helped make that mood Recommendations; The new Brave and the Bold comic from DC is worth a read. Also check out the Comic Book Couples Counseiling Podcast and check out their recent episodes talking to Tom King and Mitch Gerads about the new Brave and the Bold, and one where they discuss Danger Street. A subject you I aways walk talk about. https://www.comicbookcouplescounseling.com/post/mitch-gerads-tom-king-batman-interview https://www.comicbookcouplescounseling.com/post/tom-king-danger-street-interview @CBCCPodcast I also recommend the new Avengers #1 by Jed McKay, C. Once upon a time, in a far-off kingdom, Tom King returned! In this episode, we go into the woods and down the dell; the path is straight toward Danger Street! We're talking with the creator about his utterly absurd and equally delightful maxi-series, illustrated by Jorge Fornés, colored by Dave Stewart, lettered by Clayton Cowles, and currently on the stands from DC Comics. What's the tougher task - knocking out another Batman story or creating a narrative where twenty-three random superhero rejects make perfect inhabitants? Tom King takes us through Danger Street's creation, the mission he's hoping to accomplish with it, and how these characters have caused him to reconsider other staples from the DC Comics stable. Our conversation also allows us to delve into our recent obsession with comic book dollar bins, an obsession that Tom King most definitely shares. Within those glorious longboxes, you never know what you'll find; for Tom, they might be the basis for his next weirdo spandex drama. Most importantly, Danger Street radically aligns with a larger conversation that we've been having at Comic Book Couples Counseling. The tiniest acts, the tiniest kindnesses, can have the most massive of impacts on our larger society. Sometimes, the greatest superpower is your availability. Showing up for others and showing up for yourself can save the day. This episode covers Danger Street's first six issues, but it's not spoiler-heavy. Our hope is that the conversation will encourage new readers to jump onto the title, so we're not looking to ruin anyone's good time. Follow Tom King on Twitter and Instagram. We get highfalutin with Mitch Gerads and Tom King, discussing their latest Dark Knight collaboration, "The Winning Card," as it appears in Batman: The Brave and the Bold #1, out now from DC Comics. The longtime collaborators continue to test each other, pulling the very best from one another and delivering a Batman tale unlike any other. It's Year One for both Bats and Joker. They're looking to prove themselves. They're looking to sell themselves to Gotham City. And sell themselves as something beyond the mere mortals that they are. Or are they? Is there something more to their masks, their supernatural charade? Tom and Mitch have their perspectives on what it means to be superhuman, and yeah, so do we, especially Lisa. The hot takes are flying fast and furious this week as we dig into Bruce Wayne's mission to fix Gotham, dissect the scariest Joker in ages, and what propels Mitch Gerads and Tom King to collaborate. This episode is Part One of a Two-Part DC Comics celebration. Please return in just a few days to hear us go further down the highfalutin boom tube rabbit hole as Tom King sticks around the Love Nest, chatting about the ultra-rad and rather incredible Danger Street miniseries. The Killing Joke is a comic that ended up steering the trajectory of the character of the Joker almost permanently after it came out. For better or worse, the story of the day the Joker finally went too far has stuck with audiences. In the comic the Joker says this line: All it takes is one bad day to reduce the sanest man alive to lunacy. That's how far the world is from where I am. Just one bad day. The Joker, The Killing Joke (1988) But what if other members of Batman's rogues had their one bad day? With DC's series of Batman: One Bad Day, we are now getting to see what those are from some of the biggest names in the industry. The series kicked off with Tom King, Mitch Gerads, and Clayton Cowles telling the story of The Riddler's one bad day. Tom King and Mitch Gerads are a Eisner Award winning duo who's previous joint work on titles like Mister Miracle, Strange Adventures, and more has cemented them as giants in the industry. Tom King and Mitch Gerads portrayal of The Riddler is a dark and calculated turn by the silly man in the green get up that pushes the character to the limit with a beautifully crafted story and artwork to match. It's a story that dives deeper into the character himself but defines his origins with more gravitas and weight than he was previously given. This story has the makings to be the definitive Riddler story for years to come. On this episode, Tom King and Mitch Gerads come on to dive deeper into the story, the art, and the themes of the book. This episode is filled to the brim with SPOILERS so please read the issue before listening to this in depth discussion. It's a great conversation discussing the duo and the story they got to kick off the One Bad Day series with. The comic is available anywhere you get your comics.
