We're shifting gears this week, away from Dragon Warriors in favor of another venerable TTRPG system: GURPS! Specifically, we're diving into one of the solo scenarios published in the late 80s for the GURPS Conan line, this one based on one of the best (in our humble opinion) of the original Conan stories, "The Queen of the Black Coast"! A new documentary series explores an infamous set of disappearances around one of New Zealand's most dangerous beaches. As well as the six missing people who vanished in Piha, Black Coast Vanishings reveals others have had 'near misses'- fuelling speculation there's a serial killer in the area. Co-director Candida Beveridge says the series was designed to give a voice to concerns about the safety of the community. "What surprised us is what came out during the investigation- women being stalked, women being terrified in the bush. That, we felt, needs investigation." Over the last three decades, six people have disappeared from the Piha area on Auckland's west coast, all never to be seen again. While none of the bodies have been found, coroners have ruled most of the cases likely to be accidents or self-inflicted, and Police have treated them all separately. Yet for some, three men and three women vanishing from the same area feels like too much of a coincidence. Now, mystery documentary on ThreeNow, Black Coast Vanishings, has examined all six cases, and the effects they've had on those left behind. Today on The Front Page, co-directors Megan Jones and Candida Beveridge join to unpack the series that has got the country talking. It's good to be back doing podcasts again!Very happy to have locked down Scott for the first episode back after all this time. We have known each other a good few years now and have often had many chats at past gigs and events but not as long as this. We speak about the new Black Coast songs, plans for the future, writing music and maintaining the band through lockdown + that doesn't scratch the surface. Scott is a legend and overall sound dude to chat with about music and all the rest of it. We get a bit nerdy with metal, solos and guitars near the end. Hope you enjoy and there are more on the way!

S0209 The Maker of Gargoyles by Clark Ashton SmithClark Ashton Smith was born in 1893 in Long Valley, California and died in California in 1961. He began as a poet and wrote decadent, overblown Romantic poetry after the manner of Swinburne. He got early recognition for his work in California. Lovecraft loved him and with Robert E Howard and Howard Philips Lovecraft he was one of the big three writers of Weird Tales. Ray Bradbury was also a fan. A few months ago, I re-read Bradbury's *Something Wicked This Way Comes* , and I can see that Bradbury too was a lover of poetic, sometimes overblown language—like myself! Smith was clear that his use of language and rhetorical stylings as deliberate. He talked of trying to create a "sort of verbal black magic." He uses some obscure words, such as 'vans' for wings and 'ferine' which neither I, nor my spell-checker, had come across before. I must have heard the word before because I read all of these stories as a teenager. But I'd forgotten ferine. Turns out it's a version of feral: savage and untamed. I did enjoy the word 'troublously' and also 'lubricous'. Smith wrote poetry from the age of 11, and his first novel by the age of 14. He began to sell his stories aged 17. His influences were The Arabian Nights, and he was clearly entranced by fairy-tale realms. He is also influenced by Edgar Allen Poe and the Brothers Grimm as well as the classic Gothic novel Vathek. Interestingly, he loved the decadent poetry of Charles Baudelaire. He translated his poetry from French as Baudelaire in his turn had translated the works of Poe into French. He had a period of ill health. He was a correspondent of Lovecraft and also knew Jack London and Ambrose Bierce. Smith and Lovecraft used the strange names and ideas they conjured in mutually influenced stories. This 'open source' was Lovecraft's greatest gift to horror: he allowed other writers to build on his ideas and so the Cthulhu Mythos was created. Smith was a massively prolific author, but more or less gave up writing in the second half of his life. He then turned back to sculpting and painting. He nursed his mother and father during their final illnesses until finally is father died in 1937. Robert H Howard killed himself in 1935 and Lovecraft died of cancer in 1937. It’s thought that these events may have knocked the love of writing out of him. Smith himself had a heart attack in 1953, but he still married aged 61. He set up house with Carolyn Jones Dorman and took on her children, and they moved to Pacific Grove. He had a series of strokes in 1961, and one finally killed him. I must admit that of the 'big three' Weird Tales writers (Lovecraft, Howard and Smith), I prefer Smith. I found Howard mostly preposterous. The HP Lovecraft Literary Podcast did a reading of Robert E Howard's *Queen of the Black Coast* which had me in stitches. You need to check Chad Fifer and Chris Lackey out. They are very good. I loved Smith from my early teens and I think that the creation of the mythical Provencal region of Averoigne is fantastic. I was mesmerised by this medieval city surrounded by werewolf haunted forests. It was merely a matter of time that I managed to sneak a story in, falsely claiming it as a ghost story. It's not a ghost story, but it is a weird tale and it does contain the supernatural and a bit of murder, so I think it's okay. Smith on occasion intrudes sexual themes, and these are mostly absent from Lovecraft's work and Poe's as I can remember. Let me know if I am missing something here. I could be. It's late. I'm tired. I've been working on sales funnels rather than poetry. Pity. Coincidentally, Smith died the year I was born. That's a pity too. The Maker Of GargoylesThis is a nice story. I love the setting in the made-up French medieval city of Vyones in the haunted region of Averoigne. Apparently Averoigne is based on the real Auvergne region. Lovecraft used Averoigne in one of his stories 'Out of the... Support this podcast

In part three of our Conan BookCast series, we discuss the stories “Queen of the Black Coast,” “Black Colossus,” and “Iron Shadows in the Moon.” We also go over the tired helpless damsel in distress trope that's so prevalent in some of these stories. We also break down some of the things we dislike about Robert E. Howard's writing style and overuse of specific descriptions. If you want to read along with us, go to www.drunkenpenwriting.com and check out our BookCast book guides posted every Monday. Black Coast's Chaz (vox), Scott (guitar) and Joe (guitar) join me in The Bodega Bar to talk about their short tour of Ireland with Bailer and Hornets. It was really great to hear how much they loved playing Ireland for the first time. Since forming in 2015 Black Coast have toured relentlessly in the U.K having secured endorsements by Blackstar Amps and Jackson guitars they have gone from strength to strength. The future is in their own hands; the lads talk about new songs, frustrations, a possible new direction and how important respect is when it's earned. Of course there's plenty of laughs during the podcast and the overall feeling I get is these lads deserve the plaudits and much more. Top class guys and enjoy the episode.

As promised many shows ago we return to the Robert E. Howard's Conan Tales. We slice into The Scarlet Citadel, a tale of high adventure, oh, that's a cliche. It's the story of Conan's capture on the battlefield, imprisonment in a Citadel (Scarlet of course)subsequent escape and return to his kingdom. Yes, there is a whole lot packed into this short story. Queen of the Black Coast by Robert E HowardConan finally meets his match in Belit, the fierce, bloodthirsty and scantily clad pirate Queen. She also is unable to resist the huge, blue eyed, iron thewed barbarian who literally sweeps her off her feet. Together they become pirates of legend and are the scourge of the Black Coast. They venture up the river of death where no one has gone in centuries and lived, in search of plunder, battle and adventure. And get get more of all three than they could wish for.
Conan of Cimmeria (Lancer Books, 1969) by Robert E. Howard, L. Sprague de Camp, and Lin Carter was part of first comprehensive paperback edition of the Conan saga. Conan of Cimmeria was the seventh volume published, although it is second in the internal chronology--later printings of the series numbered the books in chronological order. When Lancer when out of business in 1973, Ace Books picked up and completed the series, keeping it in print until the mid 1990s. As with Conan, series editors de Camp and Carter filled in gaps in Conan’s timeline by expanding Howard’s unpublished notes and fragments, re-writing non-Conan stories, and writing entirely new stories. For the purist, the Howard-only stories in Conan of Cimmeria are “The Frost Giant’s Daughter” (written in 1934, first published 1953, definitive version published 1976), “Queen of the Black Coast” (1934), and “The Vale of Lost Women” (first published in The Magazine of Horror, 1967). The de Camp and Carter originals in Conan of Cimmeria are “The Curse of the Monolith” (first published in the magazine Worlds of Fantasy in 1968 as “Conan and the Cenotaph”), “The Lair of the Ice Worm”, and “The Castle of Terror”. “The Blood-Stained God” is a de Camp rewrite of a then unpublished Howard story “The Curse of the Crimson God”, with de Camp changing the setting from early 20th century Afghanistan and adding the fantastic elements to turn it into a Conan tale. “The Blood-Stained God” first saw print in the hardcover collection Tales of Conan (Gnome Press, 1955). The final story in this volume “The Snout in the Dark” was completed by de Camp and Carter from synopsis and story fragment found in Howard’s notes. For the curious, the untitled synopsis and fragment can be found in the appendices of The Coming of Conan the Cimmerian (Del Rey/Ballantine Books, 2003). In addition to the Conan influences on Dungeons & Dragons cited in Episode 2, Conan of Cimmeria was the probable source of the Monster Manual’s remorhaz, a sort of ice centipede inverse of the remora from “The Lair of the Ice Worm”. “The Frost-Giant’s Daughter” probably deserves equal credit along with the first Harold Shea story “The Roaring Trumpet” for the Dungeons & Dragons treatment of frost giants, which first appeared in the original 1974 edition and were fully detailed in the Monster Manual (1977). Frost giants would become iconic D&D foes with the publication of TSR’s second D&D module, 1978’s G2: The Glacial Rift of the Frost Giant Jarl, the middle module of the Against the Giants trilogy.

Hello world. Sorry it has been more than 2 months since my last post; I hope this one is worth the wait. I have been crazy busy with work, and not had a lot of time to sift through the piles of new music (most is terrible). This one came together slowly, but finally I was inspired enough last night to finish it. Now that I am putting the tracklist together, it seems I didn't really do a bang up job of finding mostly-unknown music. But how can I not include these amazing new Tame Impala tracks? Seriously, sooooo good! I have a Summer edition in the works, so that will probably be the next one (post-hc and rock), though I already have a couple of tracks for 49 as well. I've also started another Throwbacks edition, and have 3 different Bands editions started as well. So I doubt it will be so long before I post another. In the meantime, enjoy this one loudly and often.BiH 48 feat. Run The Jewels, The Tallest Man on Earth, James Murphy, Postiljonen (because saxophone!), The Japanese House, Aimee Dear, Real Lies, Sade, Black Coast, Tame Impala, Gallant, Mimicking Birds
