Episode 65 - Murdock and Marvel: 2003 Part 2 It was a crazy year in America, with the Gulf War and the Patriot Act in the news, and over a billion dollars spent on comic-based movies.  But in the actual world of American comics, 2003 was that most beautiful to things – a stable, productive year filled with fantastic and influential stories.    This is part 2 of the podcast. that will feature the year in Daredevil, the Spotlight story and the Takeaway for 2003.   The Year in Daredevil  Appearances:  Daredevil #39-53, Daredevil: The Target #1, Ultimate Daredevil and Electra #1-4, Daredevil: The Movie #1, Paradise X #7-11 and X, Exiles #20 and #25, Alias #18 and #24, Marvel Universe: The End #1-6, Ultimate X-Men #36, Captain America #19 and Punisher #33-34  Writing: Brian Michael Bendis (#39-50), David Mack (#51-53)   Pencils: Manuel Gutierrez (#39), Terry Dodson (#40), Alex Maleev (#41-50), David Mack (#51-53)  Inks: Manuel Gutierrez (#39), Rachel Dodson (#40), Alex Maleev (#41-50), David Mack (#51-53) The year begins with the named story that started at the end of 2002 “The Trial of the Century” but this isn't the trial we've had story leaning up to. Instead, Luke Cage urges and eventually convinces Matt Murdock to defend Hector Ayala aka the White Tiger who recently get back into the costume and in a failed attempt to stop a robbery get arrested for a police officer who was shot and killed.  The trial doesn't go particularly well despite the fact Ayala is innocent. Murdock's defense included calling superheroes like Reed Richards, Luke Cage, and Jessica Jones before Ayala himself takes the stand. During cross examination, Ayala loses his cool and lashes out in anger and frustration about how no one understands (superheroes).   This story tragically comes to an end with Hector Ayala convicted of murder. Dismayed over the conviction and assurances by Murdock he will go free, Hector attempts to flee the courthouse rather than being taken into custody and is gunned down by police on the stairs of the courthouse.  Starting in March, we get the storyline Lowlife in which The Owl has taken over part of the Kingpin's old territory and is selling a drug MGH (Mutant Growth Hormone). He's also trying to get incriminating evidence on Matt Murdock/Daredevil. Also, in this story we meet Milla Donovan, a blind woman Daredevil saves from get hit by a truck – who falls for the hero and befriends Matt Murdock (since he's Daredevil)  Uri Rosenthal, the Globe newspaper owner whom Matt Murdock is suing is found dead at home and Murdock is taken into custody for questions during his date with Milla. Matt tries to apologize to Milla for their interrupted date, takes down the Owl as Daredevil and learns that the Kingpin is back in town.  This then leads directly into the story “Hardcore” and the return of Typhoid Mary. Kingpin is amassing power again and needs a distraction for Matt Murdock / Daredevil so he pulls Mary for her “normal” life as a soap opera star. Her distraction, it turns out, is showing up during Milla and Matt's walk for lunch and setting Matt on fire. Jessica Jones and Luke Cage help Matt subdue Mary while keeping Milla safe. With Mary in jail, Bullseye talks Kingpin into giving him another shot at Daredevil which turns out to be a shot at Milla. Daredevil saves her (and carves a crosshair tattoo into Bullseye's forehead) and angrily turns his sights on Kingpin.  This culminates in another epic showdown between Kingpin and Daredevil in issue 50 of Daredevil worthy of our spotlight this week.  The year ends with writer/artist David Mack along with character Maya Lopez's Echo returning in the first three parts of the Echo storyline that we'll be saving for next year.  This Week's Spotlight: Daredevil volume 2 #50 October 2003 “Hardcore Part 5” Recap Why We Picked This Story Daredevil Rapid Fire Questions The Takeaway Even as we leave behind the grimdark of the ‘90s, Marvel's Supreme Power, DC's Red Son and Image's Invincible lead us from an age of sex and violence into an age of cynicism and moral ambiguity. This episode is a real treat because I get to talk about one of my favorite ongoing series at a time where the ongoing series is becoming increasingly rare. I had legendary comic book artist Terry Dodson on awhile back with Pornsak Pichetshote talking about their Horizon Experiment project The Manchurian and Terry mentioned there was a new Adventureman arc coming out in early 2025. I jumped at the chance to lock him in again for a chat, and he's brought along long time co-creator and comics writer Matt Fraction to the party and what a party it is. Rarely do I get to talk about the intersection of comics and architecture but Adventureman's pages are coated with art deco rich adornment. We get into why New York is such a special setting for the book, some of their inspirations behind the project initially, and how the landscape of art deco manifests in different places as this volume, Family Tree, takes us out of the Big Apple and around the globe with three unique stand alone stories. What do luchadores and French sailors have in common? You'll have to see what's in store as the stylish epic pulp adventure series hits comic book shop shelves. Adventureman Family Tree will be released on March 19th. From the publisher As the Connell family reels from the shattering events of ADVENTUREMAN: GHOST LIGHTS, they'll need to tap into the roots of the Adventureman family tree of heroes to make the world right again, starting with a luchador dynasty, savage savate kick-fighting, and the star-crossed teenage romance that brought Adventureman and Mme. Chagall the Superscientist together! PATREON We have a new Patreon, CryptidCreatorCornerpod. If you like what we do, please consider supporting us. We got two simple tiers, $1 and $3. It's easy to claim your comic as "Evil Dead for Blerds," but accomplishing the cheeky elevator pitch is far more complex. Writer J. Holtham and artist Michael Lee Harris grab their inspiration from the iconic Sam Raimi splatstick horror franchise but do so in service of an entirely different purpose. Motherfu*kin Monsters rages with a political fire, throwing their protagonist into a university setting shrouded with white faces. Their JJ eagerly wants to find his place within this system, while his family stands skeptical, waiting for it to reveal a devilish intent. Of course, JJ's kin thought metaphorically, not the literal ghouls that quickly hunger for their flesh. Our conversation with J. Holtham and Michael Lee Harris begins with their love of Evil Dead, or Evil Dead II, more specifically. We start by exploring what the film does so well, for what reason, and why they were compelled to plant their mission atop it. Motherfu*kin Monsters is one helluva ride, filled with chills and thrills, but from page one, the comic also makes its anger known. J. Holtham and Michael Lee Harris, like all The Horizon Experiment stories, speak to the moment. Our hope is everyone reading is listening to what's on the page. In addition, our discussion addresses the economic realities of comics-making and comics-shopping in 2024. The Horizon Experiment's pilot system still raises eyebrows in comic shops, but by embracing experimentation, the series removes one of the veils between creator and consumer. Honesty is the best policy, and we need to buy the comics we want to see in the world. It's cold, hard math...er, capitalism. So, remember, Motherfu*kin Monsters arrives in stores on December 18th, courtesy of Image Comics. Continue the conversation with J. Holtham by following him on Instagram. It belongs in a museum? On this week's podcast, we chat with friends and collaborators Vita Ayala and Skylar Patridgeabout their new comic, Finders Keepers, and why they were compelled to tell a "reverse Indiana Jones." Like the other comics in The Horizon Experiment, Finders Keepers flips a classic genre trope on its head and knocks the dust and cobwebs from a well-trodden idea. The hook is powerfully compelling, but as you read through the one-shot, the reader also begins to understand there is much more to the concept below that initial subversive thrill. Robbing from colonizers and returning artifacts to their culture and context, but doing so with all the trappings of a great Indiana Jones story requires a deft hand with multiple genres. Given The Horizon Experiment's pilot program, Vita Ayala and Skylar Patridge must also establish the concept and offer a grand promise of the story's possible future in just a few short pages. However, this challenge is not really different from any other comic book gig. The Horizon Experiment is merely more honest about these commercial practicalities. This week, we dig into all the demands of an Indiana Jones riff. We discuss with Vita Ayala and Skylar Patridge their collaborative process, the thrill of museum heists, and the difficulties of loving classic Hollywood adventure. FOC for Finders Keepers is TODAY (12/9), but the issue will arrive in comic book shops on January 15th. Continue this conversation by following Vita Ayala on Bluesky and their website. The guys are here to chat about The Manchurian, the first of the Horizon Experiment books. The imprint is the brainchild of Pornsak wherein he has recruited writers to take some classic tropes in comics in storytelling and reimagine them with different main characters from diverse backgrounds. Specifically for The Manchurian this means taking the classic idea of James Bond and flipping it around to feature a Chinese spy and showcase the difference between western and eastern spycraft. We get to hear about the impetus of the project and how Terry came on board plus what he enjoys most about drawing something so grounded in the real world. I'm always excited about getting to talk to comics creators about their projects but today I'm ecstatic. Not only do I get returning guest Pornsak Pichetshote back on the show, who is one of the nicest people in the medium, but it's a double treat to get to introduce artist Terry Dodson on as well. They have an amazing project dropping soon called the Horizon Experiment: The Manchurian with Image Comics. This will be the opening salvo of a series of five one shot projects, designed as something akin to a tv pilot, each featuring original protagonists from marginalized backgrounds set in a popular genre and inspired by pop culture icons. Pornsak is co-editing the series with industry veteran Will Dennis (check out my interview with Will here) and the plan is to host all of them on the show if calendars and lives cooperate over the next five months before their release to give you a rounded flavor profile of all the cool eccentricity the Horizon Experiment has to offer. This book is fantastic. I love a big swing and often lament creators not having the opportunity to take them. Pornsak has not only crafted a great story here, but he's also providing the platform for other creators to take their own swings as well with the other Horizon Experiment books dropping soon. Make sure to get your orders in because this book will catch you off guard with the clever way these two have bent the genre and it plays so well off of the current paranoia of anything other in America. Hey, don't tell us. We'll tell you. The suits who bankroll the industry think they know what we want to read. They have no idea. Marginalizing voices is an active pursuit where financial concerns are frequently used as an excuse. The Horizon Experiment has faith in us, placing its future in our wallets, betting we'll support originality in genres gatekept by the fearful. Their first one-shot, The Manchurian, carries an irresistible premise steered expertly by Pornsak Pichetshoteand Terry Dodson. Published by Image Comics, The Manchurian lands in comic book stores on September 25th (its FOC is September 2nd). The elevator pitch champions a Chinese James Bond. Look at the header image above. Terry and Rachel Dodson are going full-Daniel Craig in Casino Royale or Ursula Andress in Dr. No. We've read the first issue and can confirm fashion, sex, violence, and unconquerable charisma. However, beyond the Bond basics, The Manchurian follows a perspective never explored by 007: corporate espionage as handled by Chinese Communist agents. Just as all of us were recovering from San Diego Comic-Con, we spoke with Pornsak Pichetshote and Terry Dodson about The Horizon Experiment, their twist on the spy sub-genre, and the four other radical one-shots riding on their heels. We discuss the pilot program The Horizon Experiment employs and how it's not really different from how comics always operate. We chat about capturing the Bond vibe without being chained to it and how competition amongst peers is as much a trap as anything else. Make sure you continue this conversation by following Pornsak Pichetshote on Twitter and Instagram. Also, follow Terry Dodson on Twitter, Instagram, and his Website. Tell us a bit about that.- Do you feel that dream movie would still disappoint? Is it inherently impossible for an established IP to take those kind of risks?Something interesting about this project is the notion that it's “designed to act as pilots for follow-up books if sales merit.” Do you have a number in mind for a series to flourish from a one-shot, and if one of the one-shots does merit a series how will you let fans know?Tell us about your collaboration process with co-editor Will Dennis. Were there any pitches you got but they didn't make the cut for this first five?Tell us about working with the Dodsons and Jeff Powell on The Manchurian. We'd be remiss not to ask about Absolute Power Task Force VII #4, with a focus on Batman super robot Failsafe! Comic Book Pros: Interviews with Comic Book Artists and Comics Industry Professionals

Today, we're diving into the fascinating career of Terry Dodson, a true heavyweight in the comic art world. With a career spanning over three decades, Terry has cemented his legacy as one of the most influential and respected artists in the industry. Back in the day, I'm sure he was just a kid who couldn't get enough of comic books like the rest of us, but fast forward to 2024 and he's become a household name in the business with an unmistakable energetic style. From Storm to Wonder Woman to X-Men, Harley Quinn to Spider-Man, Star Wars, indie titles and everything in between, Terry's has brought almost every iconic character you know and love to life. His art style? It's like a breath of fresh air, injecting new energy and style into every panel. And let's not forget his knack for storytelling – he's got a real gift for illustrating stories that'll keep you hooked from start to finish. -- Presented by: Lake Como Comic Art Festival May 17-19 2024 https://www.lccaf.com/

What's in the box!? Scott Summers invites Emma Frost into his mind palace and shows her his special black cube, constructed with a little help from his ex. Gulp. This week, we reach the halfway point in our ScEmma Counseling Session series, discussing Dark X-Men: The Confession as well as Uncanny X-Men issues 518 and 519, which mark the height of their functionality. Yup, it's the top of their hill, and we're not ready to look on the other side. But let's not get ahead of ourselves. Instead, let's revel in their achievements as they recognize each other's authentic selves while casting off their conditioned selves. Namor, Tony Stark, the X-Force kill squad. Forget about them. Scott and Emma, you're two desperate, hyper-vigilant people pleasers who can forget their shady past sins and embrace their sexy present sins. Helping us navigate Scott and Emma's multiple psychic revelations is Dr. Nicole Lepera and her book, How to Be the Love You Seek: Break Cycles, Find Peace and Heal Your Relationships. Together, we explore the seven conditioned selves, consider which apply to Scott and Emma, and wonder whether Psylocke was the right choice for Professor X's surgical assistant. Dark X-Men: The Confession was published by Marvel Comics in September 2009. It's written by Craig Kyle and Chris Yost, penciled by Bing Cansino, inked by Roland Paris, colored by Edgar Delgado and Brian Reber, and lettered by Rob Steen. Uncanny X-Men issues 518 and 519 were published between December of 2009 and January of 2010. They were written by Matt Fraction, penciled by Terry Dodson, inked by Rachel Dodson, colored by Justin Ponsor, and lettered by Joe Caramagna. As always, Omnibus, the Digital Comic Store and Reader, sponsors our Referrals segment. This week, we selected two comic book titles on the site that satisfy this episode's themes.
