This week I had a conversation with Aisling Daly, primarily about blood pressure and cholesterol? We looked at how being in a bigger body affects them both, and what you can do in your diet to help rather than just prescribing weight loss. Aisling is a Registered Nutritionist with the AfN, specialising in Public Health Nutrition. She has a BSc in Human Nutrition and an MSc in Nutrition for Global Health, and is currently completing her PhD focussing on adolescent nutrition and eating behaviours. She also lectures in nutrition and works one to one with clients. This breadth of experience gives her a wide understanding of the importance of nutrition for health along with the challenges individuals face in understanding and applying public health guidance to their own individual situation. She has recently expanded her knowledge in the anti-diet approach, is HAES-aligned and applies intuitive eating into her practice, helping people improve their relationship with food and their body. On this week's Episode I chat to Aisling Daly, a County Offaly woman who has been living in New York for 8 years. This episode touches on two big areas of interest for many of my lovely podcast listeners: women working in the Construction Industry & ladies Gaelic Football & Camogie in NYC. Aisling and I discuss how she Navigated her career path in New York and the great opportunities there are here for women working in Construction. Aisling explains the importance of being open minded and determined when starting out in the construction world and the variety of roles that are out there! We also talk about Aisling's passion for Gaelic games and Camogie and the trojan work she has put in over the years to develop Camogie in NY. Aisling coaches St Brigid's junior football team and has been heavily involved with the New York development squads– coaching young girls from under 7 right up to youth development teams that have travelled around the US playing Camogie. Aisling has been growing the game from grass roots level right up to forming her own club, Annie Moore's in 2018. Annie Moore's is team of mostly American born players and ladies who have never played the sport before. Fast forward to just a few weeks ago, Annie Moore's made history and won the New York League against an impressive Liberty Gaels side – another strong club formed in NY in 2015. After their historic NY League win, this novel team went on to win their first ever North American Intermediate title in Boston last Sunday.Aisling is a woman who likes to keep fit and healthy, however in 2018 she was hit with a rare illness that left her having to slow down on all fronts. After feeling very unwell, spending time in hospital and receiving surgery, Aisling learned that she had a spontaneous CSF leak in her spine. Her ability to work, coach and train like she had been was completely changed and her condition still effects her now, 3 years later. We reflect on the importance of self care, having good people around you, and taking life (and the GAA!) with a pinch of salt. I hope you enjoy!
In this episode I was joined by Registered Nutritionist Aisling Daly. Aisling works with clients on an individual level helping them with improving their relationship with foods and intuitive eating. Diet culture and its impact on mental and physical health What is intuitive eating and who is it for? Overcoming negative body image and being a certain size Overcoming the all or nothing mentality Aisling is a fountain of knowledge when it comes to our behaviours and habits around food- check out her instagram @nutri.ais Follow me on instagram @mj.nutrition_ Subscribe and leave a review

The incredible Dr. Rosi Sexton joins us on the line for episode 126 of Paddy Holohan’s No Shame Podcast. Rosi is a former mixed martial artist, mathematician, osteopath, writer, politician, musician & was the UK’s first ever female UFC fighter. Is there anything this woman can’t do? On this week’s podcast Paddy & Rosie discuss everything that’s been happening over the last few weeks including the Covid-19 Pandemic, the Black Lives Matter campaign, the housing & homeless crisis, the impact of technology along with so much more. Rosie is a graduate of Cambridge University, having studied mathematics, she later went on to the University of Manchester to achieve a MSc before completing a PhD in Computer Science. As a musician she played in the Royal Albert Hall, with the Reading Youth Orchestra. During her MMA career, Rosie took on the likes of Joanna Jedrzejczyk, Gina Carano & Aisling Daly, all while being a mum to her son Lewis. The life of a fighter can be very individualistic by nature, requiring a degree of selfishness to succeed, however as a parent, kids always comes first, no matter what. Rosi tells Paddy about the challenge of finding a balance insisting it was her acceptance of always wanting to do more, across all areas of life, that enabled her to make it to the UFC. “With everything I’ve done, the thing that keeps me working at it is the feeling that I’m not quite as good as I want to be, I’m not quite there yet, for me that’s the thing that drives me.” During his own fight career, Paddy spent a week in camp training with Rosi at Next Generation Liverpool. Rosi was approaching the end of her MMA career by the time the UFC opened it’s doors to female fighters & the Hooligan firmly believes that Sexton could have been a UFC world champion if the call came during her prime. In May 2019, Sexton was elected Councillor to Shirley-West of the Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council in the UK. At the exact same time in Ireland, Paddy was elected to Tallaght South. It’s quite possible that Rosi & Paddy are the only two former UFC athlete’s in the world to enter the political landscape. The Councillors swap notes on their experiences so far, with both experiencing highs & lows. “The last people you want in politics are the people who want to be in power for the sake of it” Rosi insists that she never planned on going into politics but after being approached by the Green Party, Sexton believed she could make a genuine difference to her community. Since then, the Councillor has become the Spokesperson for health & adult social care. It’s quite a challenging role given the fact social care workers in Solihull can’t afford to live there. The issue of housing & homelessness is never far from Paddy’s mind as he addresses multiple instances around Dublin over the past few weeks. Also on this weeks podcast, Rosi talks about the impact technology has had on our lives insisting there are both advantages & disadvantages. The dangers of social media have been well documented on the podcast over the past 2 years & Sexton believes certain media outlets should be held accountable for selective reporting of facts to form a narrative. However, Rosi believes Lockdown would have been a lot tougher without the very same technology that enabled loved ones to stay in touch over the past few months. “The skills that people have haven’t caught up with the technology that’s out there” Rosie’ has the mindset of a champion, despite all of her success to date, she still always strives to be better. Her approach & philosophy on life is a fundamental ingredient for anyone looking to make it to the top. The full episode #126 of Paddy Holohan’s No Shame Podcast is available now across all the usual platforms including iTunes, Spoity & to watch on Youtube.

Our guest this week is one of Ireland's leading sports journalists. Ken Early has become renowned from his time on the multi-award winning "Off the Ball" before departing Newstalk FM with his collegues to form The Second Captains - a multi platform media production company. Over the last few years Ken and the Second Captains have dominated the podcast charts in Ireland and many will be familiar with their hugely successful TV show on RTE. Along side the podcast and TV work, Ken also writes for The Irish Times. We spoke in depth about MMA - UFC Dublin and Lindsey's involvement with Aisling Daly's training. We discuss Conor McGregor and if he is the champion or if the interim-title he holds is just a fancy fashion accessory. Ken offers his opinion on Dana White and his thoughts on the UFC being their own worst enemy. Should MMA fighters have a union, and outside of Ronda Rousey and Conor McGregor is their anyone strong enough to take on Dana and the Fertita brothers? Is the situation even that bad for fighters? There's also chat about best man duties at weddings, the life and deaths of Bob Durst, is Baseball a sport? Ireland in the play offs, Danny struggles to end the podcast and loads more besides. This week we were joined by a pioneer of women's MMA and a true Irish legend. Aisling Daly is part of the now famed SBG Ireland crew that have taken over the UFC. At the age of just 27 Ais "The Bash" Daly is already a veteran of the sport and one of the most respected European competitors, there's also the small matter of her being Ireland's first ever pro MMA champion and Ireland's first female UFC fighter. We spoke to Ais about everything, from how she got started in MMA and the early days of training under the brilliant John Kavanagh in "the shed" in Dublin's Harold's Cross, her first fight, the growth of MMA and the UFC, the Irish reaction to MMA, her time in The Ultimate Fighter house and of course her upcoming fight against Erika Almedia at UFC Fight Night in Dublin. On top of all this we hear about Lindsey's victory in her most recent fight to capture the Four Nations title, Danny is waiting on a call up from Joe Schmidt and Mero is still looking for parking. BjjBrick Podcast- BJJ, Jiu-Jitsu, MMA, martial arts, no-gi and good times!
The BjjBrick Podcast is in iTunes, and Stitcher radio John Kavanagh received his BJJ black belt in March 2007 from Matt Thornton. He now runs the Straight Blast Gym(SBG) in Ireland. SBG Ireland is home to fighters Gunnar Nelson, Conor McGregor, Aisling Daly, and many more. Highlights from the interview: "I think when people are enjoying themselves, they are going to stick with something longer rather than just embracing the grind." "I understand what people mean when they say someone is talented, but it is a lazy word. It is kind of like describing a chemical reaction as being magic." "If I see someone who is not enjoying it (training) I don't want them part of the team, because it can be detrimental to the mindset of everybody else. So I will advise them to take some time off and do a different sport or activity for awhile and try to come back with a fresh mindset." Do your MMA athletes train in a gi? " Yes, they do..... physically the main benefit is that it tightens up the escape game, you can't escape an armbar by just by ripping your arm out... On the flip side training nogi tightens up your attacking side of the game." "Training with a gi also is a huge benefit to keeping your mind awake and alert." "You are all going to finish fighting (MMA) at some stage, why not have earned your black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu during that period. Maybe you could open your own school. You want to be 50 or 60 (years old) and still on the mat, you are not going to be doing MMA at that stage but you and me could be two old farts in the corner of the room rolling around in a gi" About taking some time off- "I would go as far as to say that I have never seen somebody come back that was not actually better than when they went away..... A guy takes 4-6 weeks off because of an injury or something and he always comes back better.....I have a theory. Time away from physically doing it (training) allows techniques to sink a little bit deeper in. When you are training all the time whatever you have done latest is in your head, but when you take a couple of weeks off, what you have been doing over the last couple of months can sink in deeper into your consciousness... going between time on and time off the mat is very important... people come back sharper" About new students- "I found the most efficient way of weeding out the weak, I made strong people stronger.... That's the exact opposite of what I am supposed to have been doing as a martial arts coach.... I was bullied as a kid, I went to martial arts to help protect myself. The approach I was taking was not going to be of much use to somebody that was not already athletic. We changed around everything that we are doing" "I really think sport should be a positive experience. Even if you lose it should be positive because of when you went through in order to be able to compete." In this episode we talk about: The SBG upcoming fights in the UFC Why he does not like the idea of a training camp The two things you need to get good at MMA (enjoy it, and patience) How he changes a class to keep it fun His views of calling fighters talented The mindset of training Training MMA and still using the gi Taking time off from training His program for dealing with new students His four tier program for beginners Teaching new people how to train safely Advice for a new student His goal he has for his new students He wants BJJ to be a lifestyle for you How amateur MMA in Ireland has several steps, and why it is a good system Advice for MMA athletes Why you shouldn't focus on what your opponent does Quote of the week: "Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success."
