This week on the podcast we are joined by Profiessional MMA Fighter Nathan Kelly. Nathan, fighting out of SBG Ireland, has had a whirlwind fighting career. From being the best amateur in the country, to losing his first few pro fights and hitting rock bottom. However, rock bottom became a foundation for him to build upon, and since then he has been on an incredible run, including 3 first-round finishes in his last 3 fights. He joins us this week to talk about his journey, the lessons he has taken from it and his plans for the future. ------------------------------------------------------------------ As mentioned at the start of this episode, we want to use this platform as an opportunity to spread awareness about voluntary groups doing great work. NINA For Life Suicide Awareness is a voluntary organisation based in Dublin that works to raise awareness around mental health supports in Ireland. We had Pat and Jean from NINA on the podcast back in Season 1 where they spoke about the great work that they do. On episode 39 of #AnInsideViewPodcast we have SBG Ireland fighter Will Fleury. Some points we discuss:
After watching a wild UFC 257 unfold on Saturday night, DC & Helwani discuss Dustin Poirier's confidence gained during the fight, if Conor McGregor's nice guy persona is harming him in the cage, as well as Michael Chandler's statement win. Then, SBG Ireland's John Kavanagh tells Ariel whether he regrets anything from McGregor's fight camp and who he feels McGregor should fight next (1:07:25).
TSC News host Fred Richani discusses the civil lawsuit against MMA superstar Conor McGregor related to sexual assault allegations from Dec. 2018 in Dublin, Ireland. The latest civil suit and controversy can be added to the laundry list of McGregor incidents, alleged or otherwise, during his controversial but highly successful MMA career. The real question is: When will UFC, ESPN, SBG Ireland, and/or whoever else around McGregor finally take a stand against at the very least, his pattern of alleged bad behavior? As long as McGregor is selling PPV buys, probably not anytime soon. Abuse Victim Resources: http://nadiashopefoundation.com/ For the latest TSC videos: YouTube.com/TheSportsCourier. Conor McGregor’s coach at SBG Ireland, John Kavanagh, joins Ariel for their usual pre-fight chat to discuss McGregor’s maturation in and out of the Octagon, the team’s ambitious plans for 2021 and why McGregor’s motivations are different than they once were (1:01:17). Mike Brown, Dustin Poirier’s coach at American Top Team, then talks about Poirier’s evolution since 2014 and why they feel they’re prepared to beat McGregor this time around at UFC 257 (1:26:25). But before all that, another edition of Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show LIVE featuring Action Bronson, the return of the (controversial) Helwani Nose Trivia Challenge with NewYorkRic and TST, as well as a fan Q&A session.

Mixed Martial Arts brings up some strong emotions - some of us are addicted to the thrill of it, whilst for others it prompts revulsion and derision - what is the purpose of this overtly violent sport? Is there a positive role for MMA in modern society? We had the lucky opportunity to speak with Coach John Kavanagh, one of the world's leading proponents of the MMA discipline, and head of SBG Ireland, (home to some of Ireland's top MMA athletes, including such figures as The Notorious Conor McGregor) on his approach to the sport, the evolution of his career both as an athlete and a coach, and how he sees MMA and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu training as a beneficial endeavour...maybe even for everyone..!!
Trent (of Fore Play) joins Robbie this week to recap not only just the roommates' incredible weekends, but the Game of Thrones Season 8 Premiere (which includes SPOILERS; skip forward to 30:05 to avoid) as well! Later on, Dillon Danis joins the show (30:05) to declare Robbie an official SBG Ireland "adoptee", explain the excitement that comes along with fighting at Madison Square Garden, discuss whether or not McGregor/Khabib's rivalry has gone to far, and address his own rivalry with YouTuber Jake Paul. Somehow, we got into Flat Earther theories once again. Outro Music: "Stand By Me" - Oasis

BjjBrick Podcast- BJJ, Jiu-Jitsu, MMA, martial arts, no-gi and good times!
The BjjBrick Podcast is in iTunes, and Stitcher radio John Kavanagh received his BJJ black belt in March 2007 from Matt Thornton. He now runs the Straight Blast Gym(SBG) in Ireland. SBG Ireland is home to fighters Gunnar Nelson, Conor McGregor, Aisling Daly, and many more. Highlights from the interview: "I think when people are enjoying themselves, they are going to stick with something longer rather than just embracing the grind." "I understand what people mean when they say someone is talented, but it is a lazy word. It is kind of like describing a chemical reaction as being magic." "If I see someone who is not enjoying it (training) I don't want them part of the team, because it can be detrimental to the mindset of everybody else. So I will advise them to take some time off and do a different sport or activity for awhile and try to come back with a fresh mindset." Do your MMA athletes train in a gi? " Yes, they do..... physically the main benefit is that it tightens up the escape game, you can't escape an armbar by just by ripping your arm out... On the flip side training nogi tightens up your attacking side of the game." "Training with a gi also is a huge benefit to keeping your mind awake and alert." "You are all going to finish fighting (MMA) at some stage, why not have earned your black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu during that period. Maybe you could open your own school. You want to be 50 or 60 (years old) and still on the mat, you are not going to be doing MMA at that stage but you and me could be two old farts in the corner of the room rolling around in a gi" About taking some time off- "I would go as far as to say that I have never seen somebody come back that was not actually better than when they went away..... A guy takes 4-6 weeks off because of an injury or something and he always comes back better.....I have a theory. Time away from physically doing it (training) allows techniques to sink a little bit deeper in. When you are training all the time whatever you have done latest is in your head, but when you take a couple of weeks off, what you have been doing over the last couple of months can sink in deeper into your consciousness... going between time on and time off the mat is very important... people come back sharper" About new students- "I found the most efficient way of weeding out the weak, I made strong people stronger.... That's the exact opposite of what I am supposed to have been doing as a martial arts coach.... I was bullied as a kid, I went to martial arts to help protect myself. The approach I was taking was not going to be of much use to somebody that was not already athletic. We changed around everything that we are doing" "I really think sport should be a positive experience. Even if you lose it should be positive because of when you went through in order to be able to compete." In this episode we talk about: The SBG upcoming fights in the UFC Why he does not like the idea of a training camp The two things you need to get good at MMA (enjoy it, and patience) How he changes a class to keep it fun His views of calling fighters talented The mindset of training Training MMA and still using the gi Taking time off from training His program for dealing with new students His four tier program for beginners Teaching new people how to train safely Advice for a new student His goal he has for his new students He wants BJJ to be a lifestyle for you How amateur MMA in Ireland has several steps, and why it is a good system Advice for MMA athletes Why you shouldn't focus on what your opponent does Quote of the week: "Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success." Henry Ford Article of the week: Background checks required by IBJJF Want a better Guillotine Choke? Check out this seminar by our friend Roy Marsh! Thanks for listening, we will catch you next week!
John Kavanagh joins us to discuss the humble beginnings of SBG Ireland, the future of Irish MMA, and the meteoric rise of its two superstars - Connor McGregor and Gunnar Nelson.
