This week our summer festival spotlight series takes us to Akeley, a small northern Minnesota town of 400 people, located just 40 miles south of Bemidji. Akeley claims to be the birth place of Paul Bunyan. So it's only fitting the town celebrates the giant lumberjack every summer. This year will be the 75th year of Paul Bunyan Days. MPR News host Cathy Wurzer talked to Akeley Chamber of Commerce President Peggy Davies about the festivities, which kick off Friday and last all weekend.

Five people have now been charged. The Minneapolis Police union contract that would increase the department's budget by millions gets a public hearing. We heard from the many stakeholders who made their voices heard in a nearly four hour meeting. Plus, we talked to a Dakota writer about what her Two-Spirit identity means to her. We heard a conversation with an author coming to town. She wrote the best-selling book, “Tomorrow, Tomorrow and Tomorrow.”And our summer festival spotlight took us to Akeley for Paul Bunyan Days. This is the author's introduction to this chilling true story: Carl Ethan Akeley is considered the “Father of Modern Taxidermy, a title not lightly earned. I first saw his work in New York's American Museum of Natural History in 1947, a small boy in hot flannel, dripping ice cream over his Buster Browns in the July heat. His bronzes of lion spearing, taken from his adventures with the Nandi of British East Africa, are still my favorite sculptures on earth. Perhaps I always related to Akeley because he was an American who proved that my own dreams of going to Africa were not in vain. Akeley, at heart a sculptor, caught better than anyone else the action and reality of his still-unspoiled Africa. Yet he paid a very high admission fee for his exposure, killing a wounded leopard with his bare hands and being left for dead in the icy heights of equatorial mountains after being savaged by an elephant. At last, in 1926, Carl Akeley paid his final dues for his lifestyle, dying of pneumonia on the high, chillingly wet slopes of the remote Virunga volcanoes of what was then the Belgian Congo, where he had collected specimens of the mountain gorilla for the museum. Should you walk into the Museum of Natural History in New York City, you will see a magnificent diorama of the mountain gorilla, which actually is more than a memory to Akeley. It is an exact depiction of his grave, in the saddle between Mount Karasimbi and Mount Mikeno. The peaks in the background, behind the spot where his wife laid his tired and African-worn bones, are the volcanoes of Nyamlagira and Nyiragongo. In creating his works for the museum, Akeley was the most generous of men, naming the display area after his close friend Theodore Roosevelt. He also dedicated his only book, In Brightest Africa (1920), to the ex-president. The years have a way of saying thanks in kind: the Roosevelt Hall is now the Akeley Hall, and small boys like me from around the world still thank him." -- Peter Hathaway Capstick, Death in a Lonely Land. Have you noticed any antlered rabbits mounted on the wall of your local coffee shop? Or maybe some geese with butterfly wings? That’s because taxidermy has made a comeback. Our producer, Mariel Carr, wanted to know why, so she spent a few months exploring the alternative—or rogue—taxidermy scene in Philadelphia. Rogue taxidermy takes an artistic approach to the traditional craft. It combines materials, and even animals, in unconventional ways. And it seems to involve a fair amount of glitter. Meet Beth Beverly, a young taxidermist; John Whitenight, an eccentric collector of Victorian taxidermy; and the polar bears and gorillas at the Academy of Natural Sciences. Together they explain taxidermy’s long history of combining art and science, and describe the role arsenic played in taxidermy’s rise to prominence in the 19th century. Bear in mind closely that I did not see any actual visual horror at the end. To say that a mental shock was the cause of what I inferred – that last straw which sent me racing out of the lonely Akeley farmhouse and through the wild domed hills of Vermont in a commandeered motor […] The post Drabblecast 366 – The Whisperer in Darkness pt. 1 appeared first on The Drabblecast.

ASMR reading of The Whisperer in Darkness by HP Lovecraft, written in 1931. This is a sleep story containing a rolling thunderstorm as background ambiance. Recommended by Norm! Thank you! Wilmarth, an instructor of literature at Miskatonic University in Arkham, Massachusetts. When local newspapers report strange things seen floating in rivers during a historic Vermont flood, Wilmarth becomes embroiled in a controversy regarding the reality and significance of the sightings. He sides with the skeptics, blaming old legends about monsters living in uninhabited hills that abduct people venturing too close to their territory. He receives a letter from Henry Wentworth Akeley, a man living in an isolated farmhouse near Townshend, Vermont, who claims to have proof that will convince Wilmarth he must stop questioning the creatures' existence. The two exchange letters that include an account of the extraterrestrial race chanting with human agents in worship of several beings, including Cthulhu and Nyarlathotep, the latter of whom "shall put on the semblance of men, the waxen mask and the robe that hides". The agents intercept Akeley's messages and harass his farmhouse nightly. They exchange gunfire and many of Akeley's guard dogs are killed, as are several of the agents. Later, Akeley reports having killed members of the extraterrestrial race, describing them as bleeding a sickly greenish fluid. Although Akeley expresses more in his letters, he abruptly has a change of heart. He writes that he has met with the extraterrestrial beings and has learned that they are peaceful. Furthermore, they have taught him of marvels beyond all imagination. He urges Wilmarth to pay him a visit and to bring along the letters and photographic evidence that he had sent him. Wilmarth reluctantly consents. Wilmarth arrives to find Akeley in a pitiful physical condition, immobilized in a chair in darkness. Akeley tells Wilmarth about the extraterrestrial race and the wonders they have revealed to him. He also says that the beings can surgically extract a human brain and place it into a canister wherein it can live indefinitely and withstand the rigors of outer space travel and shows proof to Wilmarth. Akeley says he has agreed to undertake such a journey and points to a cylinder bearing his name. Wilmarth also listens to a brain in a cylinder as it speaks of the positive aspects of the journey and why Wilmarth should join it in the trip to Yuggoth, the beings' outpost in our solar system (later revealed to be Pluto). During these conversations, Wilmarth feels a vague sense of unease, especially from Akeley's odd manner of buzzing whispering. During the night, a sleepless Wilmarth overhears a disturbing conversation with several voices, some of which are distinctly bizarre. Once all is silent, he creeps downstairs to investigate. He finds that Akeley is no longer present, but the robe he was wearing is discarded in the chair. Upon a closer look, he makes a horrifying discovery amid the folds of the robe which sends him fleeing the farmhouse by stealing Akeley's car. When the authorities investigate the next day, they find nothing but a bullet-riddled house. Akeley has disappeared along with all the physical evidence of the extraterrestrial presence. As the story concludes, Wilmarth discloses the discovery from which he fled in terror: Akeley's discarded face and hands. These were utilized by something inhuman to disguise itself as a man. He now believes with a dreadful certainty that the cylinder in that dark room with that whispering creature already contained the brain of Henry Wentworth Akeley.
