En este mensaje tratamos el siguiente caso de una mujer que «descargó su conciencia» de manera anónima en nuestro sitio www.conciencia.net, autorizándonos a que la citáramos: «Me casé hace tres años.... Tenemos un niño que va a cumplir un año.... Trabajo ocho horas [al día], y [luego estoy] con mi bebé [tres horas y media]. Trato de pasarlas jugando [con él], pero lamentablemente sigue más a mi mami y llora [porque quiere estar con ella]. »Me duele [tanto que] a veces he pensado dejar el trabajo para estar con mi hijo. Pero recientemente solicitamos un préstamo para comprarnos una casa.... No sé qué hacer, si dedicarme a mi hogar o dejar el trabajo de diez años. Quisiera escuchar una opinión.» Este es el consejo que le dimos: «Estimada amiga: »Muchas mujeres se identifican con el conflicto que usted tiene. El que sea tan polémico y difícil se debe a que no se trata de un dilema moral. No hay ninguna posición acertada o equivocada que se aplique a todas las situaciones. »Por supuesto que muchas madres solteras tienen que trabajar fuera de la casa para sobrevivir.... Lo más probable es que [cualquiera de ellas] le diga que quisiera poder estar en casa cuidando a sus hijos. De modo que siente ese conflicto aun cuando no tenga ninguna otra alternativa. »Ahora bien, muchas mujeres casadas tampoco tienen una alternativa. Los esposos no ganan lo suficiente para sostener a su familia. Así que ellas como esposas tienen que trabajar para contribuir al sustento de sus hijos.... »Pero aquí cabe preguntarse: ¿Cuánto dinero hace falta que ganen los dos? ¿Cuándo es que una madre se encuentra trabajando para suplir los deseos y no solamente las necesidades? Esto sólo pueden decidirlo la madre y el padre. Tienen que escoger entre lo que les conviene a sus hijos frente a la cantidad de dinero que hace falta para sustentarlos. »La mayoría de los expertos en el desarrollo de los niños están de acuerdo en que, para disfrutar de salud emocional durante los primeros meses y años de vida, los niños deben establecer vínculos afectivos con personas que los aman. Muchos de esos expertos creen que ese vínculo tiene que ser con la madre del niño, pero ha habido estudios recientes que no apoyan esa opinión. Otros expertos creen que el padre, la abuela, alguna tía u otro familiar cercano pueden satisfacer esa necesidad de establecer un vínculo afectivo. »Aunque a usted le duela mucho que su bebé llore porque quiere estar con su abuelita, nosotros creemos que la mamá de usted le ha dado a su nietecito esa experiencia del vínculo afectivo que él necesita. Es natural que él llore porque quiere estar con su abuelita; es ella quien lo ha cuidado más que ninguna otra persona, y quien ha establecido lazos afectivos con él. Su hijito se encuentra en una situación mucho mejor que la de un niño internado en una guardería infantil donde no hay alguna persona específica con la que pueda encariñarse. Love and Despair: How Catholic Activism Shaped Politics and the Counterculture in Modern Mexico (U California Press, 2023) explores the multiple and mostly unknown ways progressive and conservative Catholic actors, such as priests, lay activists, journalists, intellectuals, and filmmakers, responded to the significant social and cultural shifts that formed competing notions of modernity in Cold War Mexico. Jaime M. Pensado demonstrates how the Catholic Church as a heterogeneous institution--with key transnational networks in Latin America and Western Europe--was invested in youth activism, state repression, and the counterculture from the postwar period to the more radical Sixties. Similar to their secular counterparts, progressive Catholics often saw themselves as revolutionary actors and nearly always framed their activism as an act of love. When their movements were repressed and their ideas were co-opted, marginalized, and commercialized at the end of the Sixties, the liberating hope of love often turned into a sense of despair. Love and Despair: How Catholic Activism Shaped Politics and the Counterculture in Modern Mexico (U California Press, 2023) explores the multiple and mostly unknown ways progressive and conservative Catholic actors, such as priests, lay activists, journalists, intellectuals, and filmmakers, responded to the significant social and cultural shifts that formed competing notions of modernity in Cold War Mexico. Jaime M. Pensado demonstrates how the Catholic Church as a heterogeneous institution--with key transnational networks in Latin America and Western Europe--was invested in youth activism, state repression, and the counterculture from the postwar period to the more radical Sixties. Similar to their secular counterparts, progressive Catholics often saw themselves as revolutionary actors and nearly always framed their activism as an act of love. When their movements were repressed and their ideas were co-opted, marginalized, and commercialized at the end of the Sixties, the liberating hope of love often turned into a sense of despair.
