In this sixth episode of Season Ten, host Andrew Martin meets New Zealand-based genealogist, author, storyteller and 'story listener', Simon Young. He hears how Simon got hooked on family history after a brown envelop was handed to him, and his thoughts on where the genealogy community may go next.THE LIFE STORY - DR. JAMES LINDSimon has chosen to tell the Life Story of his 5x Great Grandfather, Dr. James Lind, who was born in 1736 in Gorgie, Edinburgh, Scotland.By 1766, he'd joined the East India Company as a surgeon, and two years later earned his Doctorate after completing his dissertation in marsh fever (malaria). However, James was somewhat a polymath, and surrounded by other polymaths in Edinburgh at the time. He missed out on a voyage with Captain Cook after asking for too much money, and instead headed to Iceland to study the stars. He also mentored Percy Bysshe Shelley, and this clearly left an impression on Percy who wrote James as characters in some of his work. James was also perhaps an inspiration for Percy's wife - author Mary Shelley - who it's said, was inspired by James when she wrote Frankenstein, after one of James' 'scientific' tricks was to electrocute dead frogs so that they would twitch and jump, as if brought back to life!THE BRICK WALL - WILLIAM and HANNAH SMITHYes, that's right... Simon is asking you to help him find some ancestors bearing one of the most common surnames from Britain - Smith! Simon knows that his ancestor George Henry Smith was born in Melbourne, Australia in 1859, but he has no further information about his parents William Smith and Hannah Smith (née 'Dardin'). When George Smith marries in the 1880s, his father is named, but the marriage takes place in New Zealand. Simon doesn't know if George's parents were alive, went to New Zealand, or stayed in Australia. Can you help him find the correct William and Hannah Smith, parents of George Henry Smith? If you think that you can offer Simon a research clue or idea, then you can contact him via his website, or alternatively send us message and we'll pass it on.In the meantime... Simon is happy to accept Andrew's offer of help, but has a few questions first....- - -Episode Credits:Andrew Martin - Host and ProducerSimon Young - GuestJohn Spike - Sándor PetőfiPharos TutorsAdvance your research with a family history course from Pharos Tutors.Support the showThank you for listening! In this fourth episode of Season Ten, Andrew once again has two guests… and they're siblings! Joining him are brothers who as Parra Genealogía, focus on researching family history in Mexico - it's Roberto and Ramón Parra! THE LIFE STORY - FLORENCIO PÉREZ COMOTO Ramón and Roberto have chosen to tell the life story of Florencio Pérez Comoto - the son-in-law of their 5x Great Grandfather.Florencio was born around 1775 in Cádiz in Andalucía, Spain, and when he graduated from medical training, he headed over to Nueva España (part of which is now modern Mexico) and settled in Veracruz. He worked as a military medical doctor and after arriving he found himself deep in epidemiology. After Edward Jenner's discovery of using cowpox to vaccinate against smallpox, Florencio ended up leading the efforts of vaccination against the spread of a deadly smallpox epidemic in Mexico, and encouraging people to get vaccinated.Florencio's work is a success, but when Mexico gains Independence in 1821, he and his family flee back to Spain.THE BRICK WALL - FLORENCIO PÉREZ COMOTOIt's a research brick wall that also surrounds their Life Story choice Florencio Pérez Comoto, that has Roberto and Ramón asking for help.Whilst Florencio and some of his sons were writers, translators, and poets, Roberto and Ramón have yet to find anything biographical about his life during the smallpox epidemic and his family's fleeing back to Spain after the Declaration of Mexico's Independence in 1821.If you think that you can help with a research idea or a clue to help bring their brick wall down, then you can contact them via their Parra Genealogía website, or alternatively, you can send us a message and we'll pass it along. In the meantime, Roberto and Ramón are keen to accept Andrew's offer of help, but it's all a matter of timing...- - -Episode Credits:Andrew Martin - Host and ProducerRoberto Parra - GuestRamón Parra - GuestPharos TutorsAdvance your research with a family history course from Pharos Tutors.Support the showThank you for listening! While she never met him, her grandmother would regularly speak of her father, and this therefore gives Wanda a fondness and curiosity of his life.Theodore was sent off, without his family, at the age of 12, where Wanda has found him at the Royal Greenwich Hospital School in Greenwich, London.Wanda is soon able to trace him through Naval records - of which there are plenty - and she can see that he travelled the world with them, but was drawn back to the UK, where he also became a member of the Freemasons. In 1912, he marries Nellie Mabel Turpin... sparking off a family rumour that the infamous highwayman Dick Turpin was also a relative. Theodore and Nellie start their family which includes Wanda's grandmother.Despite travelling the world with the Navy, there's something that keeps drawing him back to the city of Chester in Cheshire, UK.THE BRICK WALL - RICHARD HOLMES and SARAH NANNY ROGERS We're looking for clues in Barbados to help Wanda solve her Brick Wall, as she looks for the origins of her 3x Gt Grandparents Richard Holmes and Sarah Nanny Rogers.Richard appears to have been born in 1797 and died in 1849, It is believed that Sarah was a freed woman who owned slaves, but in this period, Wanda explains a few scenarios that may have meant that Sarah had enslaved people and Wanda hopes to unravel this story one day.Sarah marries Richard Holmes on 28th September 1844 in Christ Church, Barbados, but Wanda would love to know the origins of Sarah Nanny Rogers. If you think that you can help Wanda with a research clue or idea, then you can contact her via her Twitter account, or alternatively, you can send us a message and we'll pass it along to her.In the meantime.... while Wanda accepts Andrew's offer of help, she's struck by a sense of déjà vu....- - -Episode CreditsAndrew Martin - Host and ProducerDr. Wanda Wyporska - GuestFind your genealogy course from Pharos Tutors today.Support the showThank you for listening! Send us a textJoining me on today's episode of The English Wine Diaries is Alasdair Warren, owner of Bride Valley Vineyard in Dorset. Born and raised in Dorset, Alasdair and his family have a long history of farming in the county, with his Great Grandfather establishing Warren's cider in the 1920s.Educated at the University of Nottingham with a Batchelor of Science in Geology, Alasdair began his career in investment banking and currently heads up a Global Soda Ash business. He also runs Slapelands Farm, just outside Bridport, where he upholds his family's cider making tradition, using heritage variety apples grown in the orchard there. In September 2023, Alasdair purchased Bride Valley Vineyard, which was initially established by world renowned industry figure Steven Spurrier – the orchestrator of the famous 1976 blind tasting competition The Judgement of Paris. Steven, who sadly died in 2021, planted vines on his wife's family sheep farm in 2008 and Bride Valley has since become famous for its Dorset Crémant among other award-winning wines. Alasdair says the acquisition of the vineyard reflects his motivation to honour and develop his family's rural heritage while promoting the outstanding produce Dorset offers, adding that it is his aim is to "continue a deep-rooted family connection to agriculture in Dorset" by applying modern viticultural practices to preserve the unique chalk-soil terroir. Kentucky Barracuda: Parker H. French by Joe Goodbody https://www.amazon.com/Kentucky-Barracuda-Parker-H-French/dp/1960224239 Parkerhfrench.com Parker Hardin French was certainly an adventurer and entrepreneur who engaged in elaborate, bold, and ambitious exploits but he was also a magnificent con-man-a barracuda. Those who followed his exploits were variously exasperated, captivated by his audacity and nervy cheek, or humored by his latest escapade. He was judged an incorrigible scoundrel, labeled a chronic megalomaniac, or peddled as a misunderstood victim of his enemies. Many believed him a hero- many just thought him insane. Some of his efforts may have begun as legitimate endeavors, but they inevitably resulted in double-crossed partners, betrayed allies. and swindled creditors. French was reported killed five times-twice killed in gunfights; executed in Mexico by both hanging and firing squad; and once killed in Nicaragua. For a short while there was a lapse of interesting press reports, so many just presumed that he was already dead, the victim of retribution or excessive alcohol. He ultimately died of natural causes-in his bed. In the era of steam, sail and horse, the rapidity of French's movement and breadth of his adventures is almost mind-numbing. As a runaway kid he fought in the British Navy in the first Opium War. When he was just 22 years old, he was a commission merchant and, a year later, built the first ocean going ship on the upper Mississippi. Before he was 30, he was the leader of an infamous gold rush expedition; implicated in an irregular invasion of Cuba; jailed bandit and then a paramilitary hero in Mexico; lawyer, district attorney, legislator, journalist, and political enforcer in California; member of an American cabal which governed Nicaragua; and, appointed but rejected Nicaraguan ambassador to the United States. He did not slowdown in his 30s: he was a real estate developer; lawyer; journalist; part of a conspiracy to invade Mexico; suspected seditionist agitator and Confederate agent; jailed as a political prisoner; and, lawyer and purveyor for Union troops. His final days were spent in obscurity but the period was still peppered with the occasional swindle that garnered both regional and national attention. First and foremost, he was always a barracuda.About the author Author of the historical biography: KENTUCKY BARRACUDA: PARKER HARDIN FRENCH (1826-1878) Subtitle: The Notorious Scoundrel & Delightful Rogue of Antebellum and Civil War America. Part 1- Eli Ace (born as Elia Aseav) is a refugee from Kazekstan, where his Grandfather and Great-Grandfather were martyred for their steadfast believe and faith in Jesus Christ. His family came to the United States and Eli quickly learned from his father how to make a living in the world of construction. Years later Eli was led to start a construction business, Nexen Construction, which he grew in short time to a $10M business and one of the fastest growing businesses in Central PA. In this first part of 2 interviews, we listen to Eli and how he was led by God to take his entire business and all the employees on a 1 year sabbatical which was internally called Serve 24. It all sounded good and was well planned out for 6 years. And then Eli embarks on this journey, and NOTHING goes according to plan.

In this episode I am reading from Byron Lacy's book 'Chosen: Chronicles of an Alien Abductee'.Can you imagine the helplessness and fear that a five-year-old would feel when he's first visited by extraterrestrials? How about the look on his parents' faces when he confesses his alien encounter?Chosen: Chronicles of an Alien Abductee is Byron W. Lacy's firsthand account of what modern science insists is only folklore. The first encounters come when he is young—with "little men" entering the room as he hugs his teddy bear. They masquerade as cartoon characters to ease his concern, a dancing Captain Hook—minus the hook—joining his comrades. Future visits lead to psychic connections with his visitors.Admitting such encounters takes courage, especially when similar comments by a family member placed her in a mental hospital. But Lacy lays it all out on the table as he details what it's like to be an alien abductee.Chosen: Chronicle of an Alien Abductee isn't just for the disbelievers. It's a free discussion of Lacy's experience—one meant to encourage other abductees through their own moments of skepticism both from others and within.BioByron W. Lacy was born in Burnet, Texas on March 21, 1950. He is a fourth generation Texan. Byron's Great Grandfather, George W. Lacy, came to Texas in the early 1850's. George and two of his business partners donated the granite to build the current Texas state capitol. He also started a dog breed which is now called the Blue Lacy and is the state dog of Texas. Byron incorporates stories of his ancestors in his books.Byron started writing poetry while in high school and received great encouragement from his teachers. His first poem was published in a small literary magazine before he turned twenty-one. Byron has had many poems published in literary magazines. He has also published a book of his poetry, THE NIGHT IS A CONSTANT LOVER, and a SiFi novel , HEROES and VILLAINS DOWN THE HALLS OF TIME THE LEGEND OF SPINEY WHEEZER, both available on Amazon. Byron has written a nonfiction book about his experiences titled Chosen: Chronicles of an Alien Abductee; also on Amazon.Byron is also a musician and writes and performs EDM (electronic dance music) on synthesizers, and has two CD collections of music on Amazon. In 1976 Byron received a B.S in English. In 1977 he received a M.A. in Graphic art and in 1978 a M.F.A. in Graphic Art. Byron has had paintings and sculptures exhibited in galleries and Museums throughout the United States.Byron now lives in Nacogdoches, Texas where he spends his time writing, creating sculptures and paintings, studying psychology, metaphysics, researching alien abductions, and helping abductees.Amazon link https://amzn.to/3WjGXmBhttps://thebyronlacy.com/https://www.pastliveshypnosis.co.uk/https://www.patreon.com/alienufopodcastBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/alien-ufo-podcast--5270801/support.

It was Swiss relatives, the Woofley side of the Jon Shumway's family, settling in the Star Valley of Wyoming in the early 1900s that inspired the original farming success that is now Shumway Farms. Then Jon Shumway's Great Grandfather, the Shumway side, merged with the Woofley's, who were dairy farmers and he was responsible for the big push to expand the farm. Now Jon is the founder of Shumway Farms, a family farm raising grass fed cattle, pigs and sheep and producing their harvested products. Those products are raw milk, flavored raw milk, raw cream, ice cream, yogurt, beef, pork, and free-range eggs. As Jon puts it, they are quite possibly the last organic dairy selling to the public in the area. That's because agricultural land in the traditionally cheese-making valley is fast disappearing. Being at the base of Jackson Hole, Wyoming has made the beautiful valley “discovered” by the public and development is taking place even as our interview is being conducted. The majority of the product line is from milk and the company recently became a licensed facility. The operation has an on-farm lab which is an important part of the food safety program. They test every batch of milk after bottling to make sure it's safe before being distributed to customers. Cows are milked in what is known as a harringbone style milking parlor. They can fit 12 cows in the barn at one time (6 on each side). While one side is being milked the other side is being prepped for milking. One of the more popular items is their yogurt, which has an interesting story. Jon's brother came back from a trip east having discovered skyr, and Icelandic cream product similar to yogurt. It's a full-cream, strained yogurt and is mixed with pure maple syrup. At first, people didn't buy the product as skyr was not a household name and sales were thin. So the company started calling it yogurt and sales did increase. However, there were loyal customers who asked “Where's the Skyr?” even though the product was exactly the same, only under a different name. On their website, you'll see there is still skyr available. With all their dairy products, whey is a big byproduct. What to do with it? Currently, it is tossed out. The company is so busy keeping up with demand that turning it into cheese is out of their bandwidth. On top of that, their whey is a sour whey, not the usual sweet whey, so it doesn't even work for pig food, as the pigs won't eat it. At some point, however, the family will add the machinery to process the whey and keep with their philosophy of responsible farming. On a side note, when informed by Sarah Masoni that one of Meaningful Market Place's earlier guests turned their whey into vodka, it definitely caught Jon's attention. The family loves to welcome all kinds of groups to the farm for visits and personalized tours. They regularly host school field trips, large family groups, professional organizations, and others to carry the banner for responsible, organic farming and its products. Or as their website says, more than organic. Customers in the local area can find Shumway Farms products in select grocery stores which can be found on the company website: https://www.shumwayfarms.com/. You also can order from their website, as the company has partnered with Beck Ranch to handle their shipping, including their ice cream! Follow them on: IG: @shumwayfarmswyo FB: shumwayfarms. Judge Sharon Gleason is the Chief Judge of the United State District Court for the District of Alaska. She was appointed by Barack Obama in 2012 after serving 11 years as a judge on the Alaska Superior Court. She is the first woman to serve as a federal judge for Alaska. On March 29, 2024, she released a 29-page decision against the fishing of the Kuskokwim River by urban fishermen, reserving subsistence fishing only to rural Alaskans. Read more here. Her fame as a federal judge stems from important environment rulings including her 2015 ruling that fined Greenpeace $2500 per hour that they blocked Shell Oil icebreaker from leaving Portland to head to the arctic for drilling operations. In 2019 she found that President Trump unlawfully sought to open the Chukchi Sea for offshore drilling; that same year she also blocked road construction between King Cove and Cold Bay. And in November 2023 she upheld the Biden administration's approval of the Willow project rejecting Inupiat and environmental claims against it.This interview came about after I gave a special order on the House floor in honor of the country of Estonia's Independence Day. The most famous Estonian-Alaskan is Judge Sharon Gleason. She is the granddaughter of Timotheus Grünthal – he was an Estonian politician serving in the Estonian parliament; Judge Gleason's Grandmother was Vera Poska-Grünthal was a leading Estonian Feminist and a founder of the International Federation of Women's Lawyers. The Republic of Estonia was formally declared on 24 of February 1918 and Judge Gleason's Great Grandfather was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs. He negotiated the Treaty of Tartu with Russia in 1920, and he was a drafter of the Estonian Constitution. Dan explores his great-grandfather's part in the First World War. Lieutenant-General Thomas Snow was a senior officer in the British Army who commanded troops on the first day of the Somme. It was a disaster; thousands of men died for almost no strategic gains, and his legacy would be tarnished forever. But Snow's record is more complicated than that, having proved himself a competent defensive commander earlier in the conflict. So how should we remember the men who presided over catastrophes like the Somme? Were these disasters due to a lack of preparation, failures in leadership, or both?Dan speaks to Paul Reed, a leading historian of the First World War, to find out more about his great-granddad's wartime service and his complex legacy.Produced by James Hickmann and edited by Dougal Patmore.Discover the past on History Hit with ad-free original podcasts and documentaries released weekly presented by world-renowned historians like Dan Snow, Suzannah Lipscomb, Lucy Worsley, Matt Lewis, Tristan Hughes and more.
