From MPR News, Art Hounds are members of the Minnesota arts community who look beyond their own work to highlight what's exciting in local art. Their recommendations are lightly edited from the audio heard in the player above. Want to be an Art Hound? Continuing the chain of paying it forward, Shari recommends a “charming project” by Felicia Cooper called “The Agency for Tiny Tourism,” which is on view at In the Heart of the Beast Puppet & Mask Theatre. Cooper was selected by the National Humanities Center's 2025 Being Human Festival. She conducted interviews asking people about their favorite Twin Cities landmarks and also led workshops to make dioramas of those landmarks. Visitors to the free exhibit can get a new view of the Twin Cities on Friday evening from 7 to 10 p.m., with additional showings Saturday and Sunday.Shari said: Everybody loves a diorama and peeking into a miniature world. I also am really curious to see which sites people depicted.— Shari AronsonA love of natural stone and kiln-fresh potteryKevin and Pam Bishop of Glenville enjoy the Bluff Country Studio Art Tour that spans southeast Minnesota each spring. Kevin is a custom wood furniture builder, and Pam calls herself an admirer of the arts. The art tour this year includes artists in 22 locations on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.The Bishops each have a favorite artist. Kevin likes the work of Ryan Palmer, whose studio in Lanesboro is called Livingstone Carver.Kevin said: He does very unique work, sculpting natural stone, and we're totally enamored with the outcomes of what stone can be with some correct tooling and knowledge of what you're working with.Pam recommends visiting Lanesboro potter Sue Pariseau.Pam said: She's got a really unique place where she designs and creates her pottery. What I really appreciate is every year she does a special invite so that we can open the kiln as part of the weekend and get to see what's been in the kiln, and have the first choice of what we want to maybe purchase while we're there. But as important as that is just being with other artists.— Kevin and Pam BishopGraffiti, chance and found object artKylie Linh Hoang is the assistant curator at the Minnesota Museum of American Art. Last week she attended the standing-room-only opening of graffiti artist SHOCK's gallery show at the Chambers Hotel in downtown Minneapolis. The exhibit “Daydreaming at Midnight” runs through May 10. It's a unique space for a show, dressed up with couches and plants for an “anti gallery space” feel, says Hoang, and the work on display derives from a unique artist residency. As Hoang describes it, SHOCK was on his way home from St. Louis when his car broke down in Springfield, Ill., on a holiday weekend, so he set about doing some graffiti work at an abandoned flour mill. The building owners took a liking to his work and invited him to create an art installation in the space.Kylie said: They couldn't pay him, but they did tell him that he could take whatever he wanted from the building, because it was going to be demolished. And so a lot of the work in this show is their assemblages and paintings on found materials from that mill. And so you'll see things that were see things painted on, like doors from the facility, signs from the facility. He also created a number of lamps from materials found at the facility. He taught himself how to wire lamps. It's a very cool assemblage of multimedia work.— Kylie Linh Hoang

Summary In this episode, we explore the art of model railroading, focusing on building key scenes off the layout and integrating them into the overall design. We discuss tips for purchasing train sets, especially for children, and emphasize the importance of taking your time and planning your scenes carefully. The conversation also touches on super detailing and the benefits of using diorama techniques to enhance your model railroad experience. Takeaways The holiday season is a great time to start model railroading. Building scenes off the layout allows for more detailed work. Using tacky glue can help avoid permanent mistakes. Start small and gradually expand your model railroad. Consider the age of children when buying train sets. Super detailing can enhance the visual appeal of your scenes. Plan your scenes carefully to avoid future complications. Diorama techniques can simplify the detailing process. Make sure to allocate time for your hobby. Integrate your scenes thoughtfully into the overall layout. Send us a Text Message. This episode has Whitey and D-Ran, of The Model Geeks infamy, joining in on the conversation here at the nut house! The topics for conversation were taken from the post Rob Adams put up in the days leading up to our recording. Our first discussion centers around going outside of your usual genre, and the pitfalls and possibilities that could offer . This one was a mash up of suggestions from Jeremy Elliot and Jason Hanscom. Our main topic is from Adam Griffin, and he asks about the differences in culture between genres. We start out strong talking about our experiences, but we still hit that kink in the rail and get derailed!
Marc, Niels and Natee essay a new and improved, that is, much more informal, news section, as we follow up on previous items and comment on two new palaeo media releases. This month's Vintage Dinosaur Art is illustrated with the sculptures of Arthur Hayward and others and is an approach that we at least would very much enjoy seeing a return of in newer publications. Finally, our Lord and Blogmaster, David Orr, makes another very welcome appearance and joins Niels in interviewing writer, Asher Elbein, about his new book, co-written with Cindi Sirois Collins, Dinosaurs and Other Ancient Animals of Big Bend. This week's episode features Florida-based visual artist Cody Meacham of Radley Relics. Cody crafts nostalgic miniatures inspired by beloved theme park attractions and horror films. Each piece is meticulously designed, reflecting his passion for capturing the essence of iconic haunted experiences. Cody has worked on projects for Universal Studios and has lately nestled into his own business of collaborating with collectors to create custom pieces. He leans into the fact that his work is extremely niche and has a very unique, nailed down audience. Cody interacts with his collectors to gain insight from them as to what they might be looking for in his work.Having that one-on-one communication with people who have already bought into his work helps him customize each piece to the liking of his fan base. Instead of starting completely from scratch every time and not knowing how it will be perceived, by getting upfront feedback from collectors he already knows each creation will be a hit. It's genius! There's a fine line between doing what you love and taking outside advice to dictate what you do, and Cody is walking that line brilliantly. Blair Austin was born in Michigan. A former prison librarian, he is a graduate of the Helen Zell Writers' Program at the University of Michigan where he won Hopwood awards for Fiction and Essay. He lives in Massachusetts. Dioramas is his first novel. It won the Dzanc Prize for Fiction in 2021. https://www.dzancbooks.org/all-titles/p/dioramasIn a city far in the future, in a society that has come through a great upheaval, retired lecturer Wiggins moves from window to window in a museum, intricately describing each scene. Whales gliding above a shipwreck and a lost cup and saucer. An animatronic forest twenty stories tall. urban wolves in the light of an apartment building. A line of mosquitoes in uniforms and regalia, honored as heroes of the last great war.Bit by bit, Wiggins unspools the secrets of his world—the conflict that brought it to the brink, and the great thinker, Michaux, who led the diorama revolution, himself now preserved under glass. After a phone call in the middle of the night, Wiggins sets out to visit the Diorama of the Town: an entire, dioramic world, hundreds of miles across, where people are objects of curiosity, taxidermied and posed. All his life, Wiggins has longed to see it. But in the Town, he comes face to face with the diorama's contradictions. Its legacy of political violence. Its manipulation by those with power and money. And its paper-thin promise of immortality. In this hybrid novel—part essay, part prose poem, part travel narrative—Blair Austin brings us nose to the glass with our own vanishing world, what we preserve and at what cost. Ben Van Dongen: Born in Windsor, Ben spent many years thinking about writing and becoming an author without doing any of the actual work. Eventually, he figured he should give it a try, and after more time being bad at writing, he managed to write some books he's proud of. A journey from 3D dioramas from the 19th century that contain taxidermy animals to today's virtual reality reconstructions of ancient or hidden worlds. In the first podcast in our Biodiverse Objects series, we take a close look at stunning 2D depictions of insect and plant ecosystems from the early 18th century and embark on some early 19th century time-travelling through fossils - forensic fossils that bear the marks of their ecosystems which are there for us to decode. A personal highlight is exploring miniature dramas captured in many million-year-old amber. About Biodiverse Objects This series of three epic (length-wise ;-)) podcasts takes a close look at some fascinating and surprising objects in the Oxford University Museum of Natural History. It is a kind of fringe-event to go hand in hand with the major redisplay happening at the Museum in 2022. Each podcast is a journey of discovery through the nooks and crannies of the Museum, talking to researchers and experts on the way. We will seek out the rarely seen or heard-about enigmatic objects in the Museum and their stories – scientific, historical and personal. These objects can be specimens, natural objects, artefacts, tools, or even museum interna such as conservation fluids. What they all have in common is that they speak to us about ecology and biodiversity. Both terms are linked – without constantly evolving ecological relationships there is no biodiversity. Is there such a thing as “biodiverse objects”?

As the Apollo 11 astronauts hurtled towards the moon on July 18th, 1969, members of the Nixon administration realized they should probably make a contingency plan. If the astronauts didn't make it – or, even more horrible, if they made it to the moon and crashed and had no way to get back to earth – Richard Nixon would have to address the nation. That haunting speech was written but fortunately was never delivered. But you can go to the Museum of the Moving Image in New York City and watch Nixon somberly reciting those words. It looks like real historic footage, but it's fake. Artists Francesca Panetta and Halsey Burgund used the text of the original address and media manipulation techniques like machine learning to create the synthetic Nixon for a film called In Event of Moon Disaster. It anchors an exhibit called Deepfake: Unstable Evidence on Screen. In this episode, Panetta and Burgund discuss how they created In Event of Moon Disaster as a way to highlight various misinformation techniques, the changing literacy of the general public towards media manipulation, and the effectiveness of misinformation in the museum medium. Soldiers and Dioramas - Brigitte Blachere Smithsonian Associates, The Not Old Better Show Interview Series Welcome to The Not Old Better Show on KSCW. I'm Paul Vogelzang and it is so great to be with you following another excellent Community Chat with Gary Cohen. We have an excellent show today here on KSCW, very timely and important, with our guest today, Smithsonian Associate, Brigitte Blachere. In the early morning of December 27, 1941, Royal Air Force aircraft and British army and naval forces surprised and quickly overtook German troops positioned on the Norwegian islands of Maaloy and Vaagso. This first true combined tri-service operation carried out by British forces was intended to damage German morale and to engage German forces defending Norway that might otherwise be deployed on the Eastern Front. The raid, codenamed Operation Archery, successfully destroyed German coastal defenses and resources on the islands, including oil and fish factories, a power station, stores, and ships. Seven Samurai, director Akira Kurosawa's influential 1954 film set in war-torn 16th century Japan, traces an unexpected partnership between a team of masterless samurai and a poor mountain village in need of protection from raiders. The action-packed epic is filled with scenes of training, attacks, and counterattacks—all accompanied by plenty of mud, horses, swords, arrows, and firearms. The story realistically reflects complex relationships among farmers, samurai warriors, and bandits, with some characters based on historical figures. Creating a village diorama and engaging in strategy games pitting samurais against raiders bring this film to life on a miniature scale. Explore pivotal battles recounted in history, film, and classical mythology in miniature through these specially designed Fall and Winter Adventures. Each session includes four hours of live online instruction with Al Gaspar and Taliesin Knol. Themed sessions focus on discovering the history of a significant encounter; facilitated diorama construction in which participants make their own terrain boards; and virtually simulated conflicts using troops of 1/72-scale soldiers in war games that offer vivid insights into military strategies. Find out more on our web site, but listen to our guest today as we'll talk about soldiers and dioramas and more with returning guest, Brigitte Blachere. My thanks to Smithsonian Associates for their ongoing support of the show. My thanks to you, my wonderful audience here on KSCW, please talk about better. The Not Old Better Show. Thanks, everybody and see you next week. Remember, you can find everything on our website: notold-better.com

In episode 12 I talk about dioramas and the reason why I love them. My hobby spotlight is on Diorama and Model Rail builder Luke Towan
Before the magic of photography, the dazzle of cinema - there was the Diorama. Frenchman Louis Daguerre is known primarily as one of the inventors of photography - but before the magic of light fixed on paper there was the Diorama, which some call the precursor to the moving image, and cinema. The Diorama offered the well-heeled audience a glimpse into other worlds… where volcanos would erupt on the hour, Roman ruins explored, mountain peaks ascended… not unlike a modern Las Vegas but in the 1820s. Using light, moving apertures, smoke and mirrors, sound and music, to produce unusually realistic effects, he created a new form of entertainment - immersive, dramatic, sensational, and for a brief period, the wonder of the Western world. From New York to Moscow, Dioramas opened their doors to well-heeled customers who would be so delighted with the ‘realism’ of the created scene, they would frequently ask to be led onto the stage - be it a scene from the Alps, the Battle of Trafalgar, Cowes in the Isle of Wight, or a voyage in search of the North-West Passage. By 1850 nearly all had burnt to the ground, probably due to the large number of oil lamps involved, and the highly flammable nature of the stage props and theatres, but hidden by a Nash façade in Regents Park, London, there stands the last of the Diorama Theatres - a Grade 1 listed building, now sadly empty and awaiting ‘reimagining’. Architect Marek Wojiechowski, who is developing plans for the long empty building, takes him on a tour backstage. Award winning writer, drama producer and podcast expert Dr Lance Dann get a chance to visit the original Diorama before setting off on a kaleidoscopic journey through other influential dioramas. He returns to the Denis Severs House in Spitalfields, where he once helped install a sound scape, to bring this detailed recreation of a Huguenot silk weaver’s house, to life. Does the magic still work? Dr Hetta Howes takes him into the immersive atmosphere of Great St Bartholomew’s Church where the worshippers were once drench is sounds, sights and evocative suggestions, and describes the most suggestible of religious texts – the passion meditations. Intriguingly he hears about The Nutshell Studies of Unexplained Death - the murder dioramas created by the brilliant and formidable Chicago heiress Francis Glessner Lee - still used today to teach detectives. Susan Marks has spent a decade researching her - her first film was charmingly titled - The Dolls of Murder, and together they try and solve one of her most famous murder scenes - Barn! Dr Sarah Garfinkle helps us understand how our brains fool us, or decide to play along with immersion, whilst Dr Alistair Good, VR games designer, tempts Dann to jump off a tall building, virtually. Finally Dann visits possibly the last genuine Daguerre diorama in the world – in a small village just outside Paris, Bry-Sur-Marne, where the Mayor Jean Pierre-Spillbauer, and local archivist Vincent Roblin, have dedicated much of the last 20 years trying to restore the small but effective diorama at the back of a provincial church. After contacting Antoine Wilmering at the Getty Foundation, they received a grant of $200,000, matched by the French Government, which saved the last of Daguerre’s dioramas. Producer: Sara Jane Hall Music sourced with the help of Danny Webb.

When I hear the word "diorama," the first thing I think of is Mr. Mack's fifth grade class and painting hills and grass and clouds and a fence into a shoebox and making little cardboard cut outs of Lassie and the boy she loved. God, I hated that stuff. The second thing I think of is a place like the Peabody Museum in New Haven and their incredibly, obsessively, over-the-toply detailed dioramas of the plant and wildlife of Connecticut.Support the show: http://www.wnpr.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Liz and Tom settle into their new apartment but not before The Forecaster shows up to disrupt their move in day. Dioramas predicting future deaths lead Agent Keen, yes you heard that right, and the team to little girl named Maggie. She's nine. Maggie is the one responsible for predicting the future murders but not in a sci-fi great spirit sort of way. Aram, out in the field, determines that people close buy are committing the crimes and Maggie's hearing aid is picking up their chatter. Meanwhile Red is out for revenge for a dear friends death as he seeks to free (or take over) some cobalt mines in Africa. After removing Iniko from the equation, Red hires a new cleanup crew to replace Mr. Kaplan much to the displeasure of one Dembe Zuma. Read More... Have you noticed any antlered rabbits mounted on the wall of your local coffee shop? Or maybe some geese with butterfly wings? That’s because taxidermy has made a comeback. Our producer, Mariel Carr, wanted to know why, so she spent a few months exploring the alternative—or rogue—taxidermy scene in Philadelphia. Rogue taxidermy takes an artistic approach to the traditional craft. It combines materials, and even animals, in unconventional ways. And it seems to involve a fair amount of glitter. Meet Beth Beverly, a young taxidermist; John Whitenight, an eccentric collector of Victorian taxidermy; and the polar bears and gorillas at the Academy of Natural Sciences. Together they explain taxidermy’s long history of combining art and science, and describe the role arsenic played in taxidermy’s rise to prominence in the 19th century. These pieces reflect upon the specificities of the audiovisual medium, through topics like the conversion to digital or, the aesthetic and narrative transformations resulting from the use of certain technological devices. The ambiguous reference to the handy quote by Marshall McLuhan (the medium is the message) is a clear positioning opposed to the faith on progress of the ideologist of the global village and founder of the theory of the electronic communication. Therefore, these videos feature some nostalgia for the physical processes, choosing the hybrid media for creation where technology and ways of doing result in a confusion between media and goals. There's a spring tradition that's been building over the last few years: Peeps diorama contests. Participants use those marshmallow birds and bunnies to put together all kinds of wacky and creative displays. We have Peeps diorama builders in New Hampshire. The Library Arts Center in Newport is holding its 4th annual Peeps Diorama Contest . The Center's Fran Huot joined All Things Considered to talk about the many joys of Peeps. I first heard about this tradition because of the Washington Post's annual Peeps competition . What made the Library Arts Center want to do a contest as well? We started the contest back in the spring of 2012, after one of our members brought the idea to us after seeing a similar arts organization in another state host a contest the previous year. We had seen the incredible contests hosted by the big urban newspapers such as the Washington Post and the Denver Post around the country. We were really intrigued with the idea and we wanted to bring it to our

Many of us have fond memories of our first visit to a natural history museum with its imposing dinosaur skeletons, neatly arranged rows of butterflies, and those musty smells. For centuries, scientists explored and understood nature by collecting and cataloguing its stuff. But what role do natural history collections—and the museums that preserve, study, and exhibit them—play in a world where science has moved beyond collecting and naming? In their book, Dinosaurs and Dioramas. Creating Natural History Exhibitions (Left Coast Press, 2014) Sarah Chicone and Richard Kissel assert that natural history museums sit at the corner of science and art and as such have a vital role to play in today's world.
