MDJ Script/ Top Stories for Mar 26th             Publish Date:  Mar 26th            Commercial: From the Ingles Studio, Welcome to the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast.    Today is Tuesday, March 26th, and Happy 79th Birthday to singer Diana Ross. ***03.26.24 – BIRTHDAY – DIANA ROSS*** I'm Dan Radcliffe and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Credit Union of Georgia.  Man Indicted in Death of Disabled Elderly Woman Two Indicted for Murder After Child Dies with Fentanyl in System Historic McAfee House Barn Engulfed by Flames   All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe!    BREAK: CUofGA   STORY 1: Man Indicted in Death of Disabled Elderly Woman Gary Allen Williams, a 66-year-old east Cobb man, was indicted by a Cobb grand jury for murder and neglect following the death of Addreinne Gordon, a disabled elderly woman in his care, who died from sepsis in November 2021. Williams is accused of neglecting Gordon, who was bedridden and paralyzed on her left side, resulting in severe injuries including bed sores, matted hair, untrimmed nails, and feces accumulation. Despite being her sole caretaker, Williams denied seeing her injuries. Gordon died the next day after being admitted to the hospital. Williams is currently detained at the Cobb County Adult Detention Center on $110,220 bond for murder and $16,720 bond for neglecting a disabled adult. STORY 2: Two Indicted for Murder After Child Dies With Fentanyl in System A grand jury has indicted Jocelyn Romero and Pablo Calihua-Garcia on charges of murder and drug trafficking, including substances such as fentanyl and methamphetamine. This follows the tragic death of a child, discovered with fentanyl in his system, in an apartment complex on Cobb Parkway during the period between October and November 2023. Romero faces separate murder charges after the child's demise in the same apartment, underscored by a toxicology report confirming fentanyl exposure. The discovery of fentanyl within the premises has led to additional scrutiny of the accused's activities. Both Romero and Calihua-Garcia are charged with felony murder and drug trafficking charges, highlighting the endangerment of a toddler through their alleged fentanyl trafficking operations. They are currently detained without bond at the Cobb County Adult Detention Center, awaiting trial as co-defendants. STORY 3: Historic Barn Destroyed by Fire A historic barn on the property of the McAfee House caught fire over the weekend. Cobb County Fire crews swiftly responded to the blaze, which was extinguished within an hour. While the house itself, built in the 1840s and serving as a Civil War headquarters, was spared, the barn suffered significant damage and is considered a total loss. The property, owned by a family that hasn't occupied it for over a decade, is up for sale as a commercial development site. Cobb Landmarks hopes to relocate the house and remaining barn to preserve its historical significance amid surrounding developments, though legal protections for its heritage are lacking.   We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.799.6810 for more info.    We'll be right back    Break: HENRY CO SHERIFFS – DRAKE   STORY 4: Fired Cobb Teacher Appeals in Cobb Superior Court A Cobb County fifth-grade teacher fired for reading a book about gender identity to students has appealed her termination to Cobb Superior Court after the Georgia Board of Education upheld her firing. The appeal contends the Cobb school board's decision was arbitrary and lacking evidence. Rinderle was dismissed for reading "My Shadow is Purple," which features a nonbinary character, despite a tribunal recommending against termination. She's also filed a discrimination lawsuit against the school district. The state board's decision rejected claims of policy vagueness. Rinderle's firing coincided with the district's removal of certain books, sparking accusations of homophobia, which the district denies, citing a focus on curriculum standards. The case reflects broader concerns about educational policies and LGBTQ+ themes. STORY 5: Atlanta Braves Unveil New Seating Offering for the 2024 Season The Atlanta Braves have recently announced the introduction of the Lexus Premium Boxes, a premier seating option set to be available from the 2024 season. This unveiling is part of a broader initiative involving multimillion-dollar renovations at Truist Park, reflecting the organization's commitment to enhancing the fan experience through first-class amenities and partnerships. The Lexus Premium Box offers an exclusive hospitality experience for groups ranging from 8 to 14 guests. The Terrace Level will be rebranded as the Lexus Level, further solidifying this collaboration. Located in specific sections across Truist Park, the Lexus Premium Boxes will provide guests with several luxury amenities. These include complimentary premium parking, a private entrance, flexible seating options featuring cushioned seats and high-top seating, as well as unlimited access to the Xfinity Club. Additionally, guests can enjoy exclusive menu and beverage packages delivered directly to their boxes, ensuring an unparalleled game-day experience. Despite the high demand, all season leases for the Lexus Premium Boxes have already been sold out, highlighting their popularity and the anticipation surrounding this new offering. However, there is a limited opportunity for daily rentals. Interested parties are encouraged to contact the Braves directly via phone, visit the official website, or email for more information on securing a daily rental. We'll be back in a moment    Break: CURIOSITY LAB BIKE RACE – INGLES 9   STORY 6: VA Regional Office renamed for Johnny Isakson The Atlanta Veterans Affairs Regional Office was officially renamed in honor of the late U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson during a ceremony in Decatur. Isakson, who passed away in 2021, served as chairman of the Senate Veterans' Affairs Committee from 2015 to 2019. Sen. Jon Ossoff highlighted Isakson's bipartisan approach and commitment to veterans' issues during the ceremony, emphasizing his influence on the Senate's work ethic and cooperation. Isakson, known for bridging partisan divides, was honored for his dedication to national interests and veterans' welfare. Ossoff sponsored the bipartisan bill to rename the VA office after Isakson, which was passed by the Senate in 2022. STORY 7: Acworth K-9 Catches First Suspect During a traffic stop on Main Street in Acworth, Christopher Lance Hammitt fled on foot from Officer Anthony Trapani. Acworth Police K-9 Robuck was deployed and successfully tracked Hammitt, leading to his apprehension near the Bartow County line. Hammitt was wanted for various offenses including methamphetamine trafficking and fraud. Robuck's acquisition was made possible by a donation from Regina Robuck, and this successful track marked Robuck's first operation with the Acworth Police Department. The department expressed gratitude to Regina Robuck for her generous contribution.   Break: ATL HEALTH FAIR   Signoff-   Thanks again for hanging out with us on today's Marietta Daily Journal podcast. Kadian grew up in Kingston, Jamaica, where she developed a love for interior design and has always had a passion for fashion. After immigrating to New York, she initially planned to go into investment banking but decided to follow her passion instead and enter the business side of the fashion world. Prior to joining Renfro, she consulted with leading brands and retailers on their e-commerce and digital marketing strategies. In this episode, Alan and Kadian discuss her pathway to becoming the CMO at Renfro, the role of DEI and how she's focused on it, and an initiative she helped launch called Project Footprint. The critically acclaimed documentary follows, a then eight-year-old Bowen Hammitt, through his third major open-heart surgery as his parents struggle with the hope that the surgery could make his life better and the knowledge that it could make things much worse. Says Co-Directors Lexi Read and Zach Read of the film, which will be released on digital July 14, “We believe in the power of films to break down barriers, reduce stigma, and develop greater empathy and connection in the viewer. Exploring a family facing a life-changing surgery, what that means, the fears, the hopes, and all of the tension in between, is something we believe helps shed light on an experience that not many have lived. This episode is brought to you by Sendlane.   Entrepreneurs wanting to build a brand that's going to last should make as many decisions as possible based not on a first-order principle but a second-order principle, says Tony Drockton, the Founder and "Chief Cheerleader" of Hammitt, a brand that focuses on luxury handbags and small leather accessories.   "A first-order principle is 'I do this, and this is what happens.' A second-order principle is 'I do this. This is what happens. And then, later on, this is the result of that happening, the long-term effects," Tony says.   He says that many handbags in America are made with the first-order principle.   "Second-order principle is the luxury brands of Europe," he says. "That's what Hammitt is built upon. ... It's a longer-term play for us to build something that never falls apart and breaks down. But what it does is it builds that long-term trust so that they have more and more of their friends and more of our bags in their closet."   Hammitt has been in business for 15 years; a longevity Tony attributes to editing.   "I think for any entrepreneur, the secret to longevity is saying no - a lot," he says. "The secret to a great brand in fashion is to edit, edit, edit. ... Believe it or not, we are five times larger than we were just four years ago in size, and our collections are half the size of what they were."   Despite the downturn in the economy, Tony sees nothing but sunshine ahead for his brand.   "I feel secure. (Hammitt) was built during the worst of times. This is our time," he says. "This is when a brand like Hammitt becomes the staple because we're not luxury. We're not so gaudy that people would be embarrassed to wear it when going through recessionary or tough times."   In Part 2, Tony talks about:   * The thought processes of first-order principle and second-order principle. * How quality affects the relationship with retailers. * A closer look at Hammitt's products. * The production and design process. * Why editing is essential to longevity. * Why the downturn in the company might not hurt Hammitt. * Where to find the brand's products.   Join Ramon Vela and Tony Drockton as they break down the inside story on The Story of a Brand.   For more on Hammitt, visit: https://www.hammitt.com/    Subscribe and Listen to the podcast on all major apps. This episode is brought to you by Sendlane.   Hammitt is on a mission to become the most outstanding new luxury handbag brand coming from the United States, says Tony Drockton, the company's Founder and "Chief Cheerleader."   "Our simple philosophy is that we build the most beautiful, luxurious product that also incorporates the highest level of functionality so that we're the go-to handbag or accessory that our fans will carry when they travel when they go out for some coffee with friends, when they go to the office or for the evening to have a little fun," Tony says.   The brand is 15 years old and is now carried in more than 950 retail stores around the country, along with two of its locations in Southern California. (A third is about to open.)   Tony says he moved to SoCal from Ohio with the goal of incorporating his love of art, architecture, and entrepreneurship.   "The fashion industry just fit," he says.   In Manhattan Beach, he was introduced to a fashion designer looking for an investor.   "I fell in love with her designs, spoke to some people in the community that also loved them," he says. "I thought, let's just do this thing."   Tony says fear and failure are vital parts of an entrepreneur's life - it's just how you deal with them.   "If you choose the life of an entrepreneur - everyone needs to understand - you choose to fail," he says. "Nobody really can call themselves an entrepreneur if it's successful the first time they do something. That's just luck."   The key is turning the fear of failure into positive energy.   "The purpose of fear - going back to the earliest times - was fight or flight. It was to make you aware of a danger of a predator," he says. "As an entrepreneur, the danger of the predator can come in many ways, and the fear to me, that's the battery. That's the charge that keeps us all moving."   For Hammitt, Tony says the factor that has set the brand apart is the focus on the brand experience.   "We want everyone to walk away from meeting Hammitt, touching a Hammitt bag, encountering a Hammitt fan - just really understanding what we're all about and what we're all about is we're this little brand out of Hermosa Beach, California."   In Part 1, Tony talks about:   * Gratitude for a Father's Day gift from his young son years ago that he still displays today. * The company focuses on building the brand one relationship at a time. * His background in art, architecture, and entrepreneurship. * How to stare down fear and failure. * The focus on the brand experience. * Why making a high-quality product is better for the environment.   Join Ramon Vela and Tony Drockton as they break down the inside story on The Story of a Brand.   For more on Hammitt, visit: https://www.hammitt.com/    Subscribe and Listen to the podcast on all major apps. This goes back to 1909, when Congress deeded a boarding school to the state of Minnesota with the stipulation that an institution of learning be maintained and American Indian students “be admitted free of charge.”The tuition waiver program is available to enrolled citizens of federally recognized tribal nations in Minnesota. Students must be starting their first year of an undergraduate program or transferring from a tribal college.Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College President Stephanie Hammitt said this is a good thing.“Anything that we can do to help the students to make it easier, make it less stressful for them to continue on -  that's what we want to support,” she said.  “And definitely with lower or free tuition, that is something that is going to benefit all those students.”Hammitt said having the financial assistance to attend a large, research institution like the University could encourage students to pursue different fields or advanced degrees.University officials said in a release that they're working to improve retention and graduation rates of Native American students by increasing financial assistance and by reinforcing student support programs.Hammitt said extending the tuition assistance to transfer students from tribal colleges helps set students up for success.“Some students might not feel comfortable going directly to a university setting,” she said. “And therefore, you know, a smaller tribal college might suit their needs and help them gain the confidence they need to move on.”     Hammitt said ideally the financial aid would be offered to descendants of enrolled members, too.

Feven Gerezgiher reports:The University of Minnesota has offered free tuition to American Indian students on its Morris campus from its founding. This goes back to 1909, when Congress deeded a boarding school to the state of Minnesota with the stipulation that an institution of learning be maintained and American Indian students “be admitted free of charge.”Now, starting next fall, the University of Minnesota is providing free or reduced tuition for Native students on all five of its campuses.According to a news release, the tuition waiver program is available to enrolled citizens of federally recognized tribal nations in Minnesota. “And definitely with lower or free tuition, that is something that is going to benefit all those students.”Hammitt said having the financial assistance to attend a large, research institution like the U could encourage students to pursue different fields or advanced degrees.University officials said in a release that they're working to improve retention and graduation rates of Native American students by increasing financial assistance and by reinforcing student support programs.Hammitt said extending the tuition assistance to transfer students from tribal colleges helps set students up for success.“Some students might not feel comfortable going directly to a university setting,” she said. “And therefore, you know, a smaller tribal college might suit their needs and help them gain the confidence they need to move on.”     Hammitt said ideally the financial aid would be offered to descendants of enrolled members, too. To be considered for the University of Minnesota Native American Promise Tuition Program, students have to apply for admission and financial aid, and show their tribal citizenship.///And now a story about healing through doll-making:When 215 children were found buried on the lands of a former residential school in Canada earlier this spring, local community members found their own histories uncovered. As the summer progressed, members of Kalpulli Yaocenoxtli and Indigenous Roots in St Paul gathered to grieve and honor the found children - and the children that survived - through ceremony and sewing spirit medicine dolls. This week, their work culminates in Dia de los Muertos ceremonies and an exhibition.Elder Maria Morin McCoy is from the Bear Clan and the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa. She led the making of the spirit dolls as a way to give life to the uncovered children.“Working through the dolls, the spirits of the children began to talk to the doll makers,” she said. “So many of the people that participated in making a doll had actual experiences, dreams, or just knowing as they were sewing the bodies together of what had happened to the children, and they began to tell them their story.”McCoy said she and others involved with the project have been connecting with their loved ones who were directly impacted by boarding schools, finally opening up about that difficult history.Ruti Mejia is one of the youth organizers and dollmakers. She said the project was started by members of her traditional dance group who needed a space for healing. She says it has become an opportunity for intertribal connection.“Because we've historically been displaced and been dispersed to not collaborate with each other, and to some extent, sometimes put against each other,” she explained. “But we really are intentionally disabling all of that, and dismantling that and really coming back to our ways of gathering, our ways of sharing, our ways of spending time with community, sharing a meal.” Organizers said they found it fitting to hold a ceremony on the first day of Dia de los Muertos, which traditionally honors the death of children. The exhibit is open to the public at the Indigenous Roots Cultural Arts Center through November 30.

Please join me as Neon Trees front man Tyler Glenn and award-winning pianist and composer Paul Cardall return to Mormon Stories Podcast to premiere a new music video: "I Know It Hurts", from Paul Cardall's memoir-style album "The Broken Miracle." We would welcome your questions for Tyler and Paul during this live Q&A.   “I Know It Hurts” was co-written by Cardall and Glenn after they met several years ago at the famed LOVELOUD Festival, where they were both performing. Glenn is co-founder of the festival, alongside Imagine Dragon’s Dan Reynolds.   “Before writing this song, Tyler and I discussed at length the challenges we all feel that result from trauma,” Cardall explains. “In my case, though my heart transplant was a beautifully orchestrated miracle, it was still the grand finale to a lot of years of medical trauma. It triggered anxiety and depression. For everyone who is suffering, not necessarily physically, but because they are different or feel like an outsider, I want to say to them, ‘I know it hurts.’ This song acknowledges that you are not alone. This song validates our feelings in a way that says, ‘keep going, keep fighting, we understand.’”   Glenn adds,   “I wanted the lyric and performance of this song to convey a sense of understanding how it feels to get through a trauma or heartache. So much of life for many is the search for a sense of belonging, a sense of self-worth. This song feels more like an acknowledgement of that, and I hope it brings a feeling of being seen and comforted. I hope those in pain from whatever it may be, feel a sense of validation.”   The video, directed by Rob Norbutt, is in stark black and white, the simplicity of which amplifies the power of the message:   You’ve been floating out in space You just wanted to believe There were tears upon your face And your body felt no ease Dear God is there not more Cuz it’s cold on the church floor   Cardall’s new album is more than a colorful collection of 19 emotionally-charged songs. The Broken Miracle is a musical memoir, a personal manifesto that celebrates a life filled with nearly unfathomable tragedy and heady triumph. An enthusiastic collaborator, Cardall welcomes an all-star cast of creative partners on The Broken Miracle. The title track was penned with Christian music veteran Matt Hammitt and Carter Forge, and is sung by Hammitt. “Broken Machine” features singer/songwriter Rachael Yamagata’s vocals on the tune Cardall co-wrote with Yamagata and Trevor Price. In addition to Glenn, the project also includes appearances by Ty Herndon, J. Daniel, and Akelee; while pop star David Archuleta sings the power-ballad “My Heart Beats for You.” His collaboration with Thompson Square on “All I See is Snow” was declared “ the Christmas song of the pandemic.”   Cardall’s evolution as an artist continues with the release of The Broken Miracle, a title inspired by his true-to-life story of being born with a congenital heart defect, which nearly took his life numerous times. Cardall received a heart transplant 10 years ago and continues to thrive as a father, husband, and artist. The Broken Miracle will also be released as a biographical fiction novel written by J.D. Netto. The book will be released February 2.
