Who's that, beckoning to you from the mouth of a weird looking cave? Why it's Alasdair Beckett-King of course! Join him and James Shakeshaft, and enter a subterranean labyrinth hidden beneath a leafy London borough. In 1907, The Illustrated London News called it The Great Chislehurst Cave Mystery: 22 miles of hand-carved tunnels, with stories of smugglers, druids, and rock and roll legends. On this week's episode of Local Legends, Martin gathers round the campfire to talk about the folklore of Middlesex with the hosts of The Loremen Podcast James Shakeshaft and Alasdair Beckett-King.Over seven years ago, when they were fairly early in their careers as stand-up comedians, James and Alasdair found themselves chatting about folklore on a road trip to the South West. After amusing one another in the car, they wondered if the world might like to be in on the joke. So The Loremen was born. Ever since, and across five series, they have been poking into the weird and wonderful world of half-true stories from days of yore, and sharing their explorations, much to the Internet's collective glee.In this episode, Martin steers James and Alasdair's attentions toward the lore of the historic county where they met - which is better known today as London. Encompassing buried temples beneath the financial district, mysterious automata, dragons, The London Monster, myths of gigantic kings, famous ghosts, and a surprising amount of chat about The Muppets, it's perhaps the giggliest episode of Local Legends we've released, but that's no bad thing! Learn more about The Loremen here: https://www.loremenpodcast.com/The Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Then, and most importantly, the pair take turns to tell a new version of an ancient story from that county - all before discussing what that tale might mean, where it might have come from, and the truths it reveals about England's hidden past...Bonus Episodes are released on Thursdays (Magic and Medicines about folk remedies and arcane spells, Three Ravens Bestiary about cryptids and mythical creatures, Dying Arts about endangered heritage crafts, and Something Wicked about folkloric true crime from across history) plus Local Legends episodes on Saturdays - interviews with acclaimed authors, folklorists, podcasters and historians with unique perspectives on that week's county. With a range of exclusive content on Patreon too, including audio ghost tours, the Three Ravens Newsletter, and monthly Three Ravens Film Club episodes about folk horror films from across the decades, why not join us around the campfire and listen in?Learn more at www.threeravenspodcast.com, join our Patreon at www.patreon.com/threeravenspodcast, and find links to our social media channels here: https://linktr.ee/threeravenspodcast Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. On this week's episode we're headed back to Middlesex, the historic county better known as London, and Martin is telling a whopper of a story, all about the horrors unearthed during the digging of the city's underground... We start off chatting about St Serf and his wild and crazy life, dragon slaying and all, after which we move on to Middlesex! In addition to talking about the Palace of Westminster, the London Stone, and the Temple of Mithras underneath the Bloomberg building, we consider the relative merits of a few options in this week's County Dish, including Chelsea Buns and Jellied Eels! After some folkloric chat about topics including Old Mother Redcap, the head of the giant Bran, buried under the Tower of London, and the ghosts of Newgate Prison, plus some excerpts from this week's Local Legends interview with hosts of the The Loremen podcast James Shakeshaft and Alasdair Beckett-King, it's on to the main event: Martin's story "The Crossrail Horror."Speak to you again on Thursday for our new Dying Arts bonus episode all about Besom and Broom Making! The Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Back by popular demand! The Loremen return to The Midnight Library for a comforting slumber party! Well, that's probably not what they'll tell you, but maybe you shouldn't be so trustful of two strange men who call themselves "The Loremen". Tonight, James Shakeshaft & Alasdair Beckett-King find themselves holed up in The Red Room, and actually have the nerve to request a bedtime story to be told to them by your host, Miranda Merrick! (How else would we end up with a horror warning?) Please get cozy... and brace yourself! Special Thanks to Sounds Like an Earful Music Supply for the amazing music AND sound design.
The cats from Long Cat Media came back! Lindsay Sharman and Laurence Owen (who are so award-nominated they seem to have gained another nomination since last week) return. And they bring with them a first-hand sighting of a cryptid. That's right, Laurence saw Derbyshire's elusive Beast of Belper. Meanwhile, James Shakeshaft has not been shake-shirking his research duties. He's on the trail of the Surrey Puma, and he's found photographic evidence that will blow you away (if you've never seen a picture of a normal cat before). What does it sound like when a spooky story has James Shakeshaft quaking in his (big giant's) boots? You'll find out in this episode, because Alasdair has torn two hair-raising mysteries from the pages of W. T. Stead's book of Real Ghost Stories. Meet a hard-as-nails northern ghost in a train station cellar, and swim frantically away from the eyeless lady of Willington Mill. Grab your gilets and slankets, and prepare for your spine to be tingled and/or chilled. Beware traveller! For Northumberland's Simonside Hills are the setting for this week's tale. Those rugged crags are thick with evil, evil creatures who want nothing more than to lure you to your doom. Fear not! Alasdair Beckett-King is here to warn of of their tricksy ways, while James Shakeshaft looks on, scornfully. Hear how a Shakeshaft-type spent a miserable night in a horrible little cottage, while an ABK-esque sceptic came a cropper in a bog. Having come into the possession of certain manuscripts on North American lore, James Shakeshaft whisks you off to Spokane in Washington State. Supposedly the healthiest city in the world, Spokane has so many serial killers they need their own subcategories. This episode welcomes Alasdair back from Edinburgh for a whistle-stop tour of a city that will tickle your funny bones while simultaneously tingling your spine. Meet a candy poisoner, a faith healer, the oldest ghost EVER and the Loreboy's annoying alien sidekick Spokey-doke. (His catchphrase is "Spokey-dokey!" and we hate him.) The Loreboys are BACK! In the smoking room of the Loregentleman's Club, Mr James Shakeshaft puffed on his pipe with a look of consternation. He found the silence intolerable. “D— it, man,” he said at last, “what the devil did you mean by your message? ‘I saw a house that wasn't quite right,' what a load of old rot.” Mr Alasdair Beckett-King, seated in the chair opposite, peered at Shakeshaft through a yellowish haze and his drooping eyes sparkled in the firelight... This evening's podcast begins with Alasdair telling James a tale about the Midlands. A land that is neither North nor South. A land replete with mystery and intrigue. A land whose accent neither Loregent can do. Northamptonshire. Beginning with the three-sided folly of Ruston Triangular Lodge, the boys discover a drumming well, a perambulating doll and a haunted church that's thick... wi' rabbits. Loreboys nether say die! Legend has it that on Midsummer's Eve the 6000 year-old Hoarstones come to life. At midnight they walk to the local watering hole for a drink. Seaton Delaval Hall was once home to Sir Francis Blake Delaval - the man who puts the "pranks" in "I am sick of this guy's terrible pranks". But, although living with Sir Francis must have been a nightmare, it doesn't compare to the gruesome tale he told of the Wallsend Witches. At the stroke of midnight, the Loreboys meet a gaggle of hags in the old church. We learn why Hadrian's Wall is so jumpable, and how to spot Jeremy Beadle in disguise. You know the feeling. It's night-time and you're all alone. You get the strangest feeling that if you look into the glass of a darkened window, you might see a scary figure looking back at you? Well, the tale that Alasdair Beckett-King chills James Shakeshaft with in this episode is ever so similar. Except it's daytime, you're in church with other people, and the figures seem to be acting out a boring play. So... the same. It's the fenestral spectres of Trinity Church in York. James Shakeshaft plays against type by offering up a story that's very nearly historically accurate. The legend of the Vegetable Lamb of Tartary or 'Barometz' seemed so plausible. It was a grazing lamb that grew on a bush; it seemed like it HAD to be real. The stories were so convincing a series of extraordinarily named men launched expeditions to find it. They didn't find it. It's not a real thing. Come one, a vegetable lamb? What next, strawberry crackling? Beef tomatoes? BLOOD ORANGES?! Welcome to The Best Of Times... podcast brought to you by Lush and The Quietus. The Best Of Times... podcast is presented by John Doran. Over the coming months he will be talking to people about some of the best and worst times they have been through and hopefully find out how these experiences have made them who they are today. So far he has interviewed Sleaford Mods, The Specials, Kristin Hersh and Róisín Murphy. Today's guest is living legend Mavis Staples who was born in Chicago in 1939 and from an early age was the voice that pushed The Staples Singers, the world's most successful gospel group, to international fame. From the late 50s onwards the group started incorporating hard hitting social themes into their songs and from 1963 they were essential figures in the American Civil Rights movement. And lo, we find ourselves at the end of another season of nutty audio raves from John Dredge and his heavily-coerced team of Richard Cray, Anna Emerson, Greg Haiste and James Shakeshaft until such a time as they are prepared to go 'boing' in the same room as each other once again. But never fear, odd listener, for they go out in fine style with an appearance from the latest in extra-terrestrial specimens - and all for the price of a single Green Shield stamp! Now, there's value, value fans! Plus David Lynch makes a surprise appearance (Oh, damn - we've ruined it).
John Dredge presents a startling report on the year's most shocking household implements. There will also be odd noises of all shapes and sizes, plus an argy-bargy of aquatic goodies including the sound of a very large splash, courtesy of our friends at Thames Water. All this, plus Leighton Buzzard in colour. With Richard Cray, Anna Emerson, Greg Haiste, and James Shakeshaft.
The omnipresent John Dredge returns – or does he? Some say he's never been away. Tune in to find out. Listeners in New Malden should take note that our roadshow team are also in the area, so please stand well back and allow them to pass along Coombe Road unhindered. Also this week: Who's behind the cartoon door? Is it Lord Hailsham? Or is it Richard Cray, Mark Davison, Anna Emerson, Greg Haiste, and James Shakeshaft? It's difficult to tell in this light.
In this week's edition, sideboards rule the roost and there's cubes a-plenty when Reigate comes into the picture - yet all is not as it seems (observe the conundrum as our theme tune is marched straight out of the studio). Pop personalities and phone-ins galore are also very much in short supply tonight, so grab your armchairs and await further instructions / know-how. Plus Trip Advisor's Peter Pilbeam tells you where to go. But not why, sadly. With John Dredge, Richard Cray, Anna Emerson, Greg Haiste, and James Shakeshaft.
Raise your holdalls once more, as the time has come for John Dredge to invoke the spirit of plinths, cagoules and vestibules and unveil a second series of The Nothing to Do With Anything Show. In this first act of audio audacity, we highlight the achievements of man, woman and shrew with not only the sounds of tomorrow today, but also the sounds of today tomorrow. Come one, come all: our Frinton studios await you! And why not join Richard Cray, Anna Emerson, Greg Haiste and James Shakeshaft in signing our logbook afterwards?

John Dredge says goodbye to 2012, also known as the Chinese Year of the Accoutrement, with yet another one of those crazy end-of-year round-ups of the year’s most shocking household implements. There will also be odd noises of all shapes and sizes, plus an argy-bargy of aquatic goodies including the sound of a very large splash, courtesy of our friends at Thames Water. All this, plus Leighton Buzzard in Color - whoopee! With Richard Cray, Anna Emerson, Greg Haiste, and James Shakeshaft.
In the thrid of six new podcasts, John Dredge invites our crack team of announcers to announce what's in this week's announcer-packed programme, with each and every single announcement lovingly frosted with audio glucose. We welcome back agricultural song stylist Farmer Collins for some reason, and there's other things both here and there. If you'd like to swap this podcast for a game of Ker-plunk with half the accessories missing, give Noel a call on 01-811-8055. Otherwise: biscuits! With Richard Cray, Anna Emerson, Greg Haiste, and James Shakeshaft.
