In this episode of *5 Minutes of Peace*, we reflect on a powerful passage from Alex Woodard's *For the Sender*. The story centers on the song "Breathe the Sky," born from a heartfelt collaboration between friends. As Jordan and Alex create the music, it weaves together memories of friendship, loss, and finding solace in the present. The lyrics unfold into a realization that love and connection transcend the physical—symbolized by breathing in the sky, a metaphor for accepting the beauty of the moment and what remains of a loved one.The episode concludes by encouraging listeners to embrace this message, reminding us that we are all interconnected on a journey of love, service, and peace. We are thrilled to introduce our guest, singer, songwriter and author, Alex Woodard. Alex has toured nationally behind several critically acclaimed albums, earning a few prestigious industry nods while sharing the stage with some of his heroes. His most recent release, Ordinary Soil, written in collaboration with triple-board certified MD turned regenerative agriculture warrior Zach Bush, follows a generational farming family haunted by a ghost from the past. Amongst early endorsers is Woody Harrelson, who offered "Ordinary Soil brings to haunting life the desperate realities of the American heartland, but also offers a glimpse into a better future... a call to action for all of us.” Alex lives with four horses, two dogs, two chickens, and two beautiful humans on a small ranch near the California coast. In this conversation we dive into: How our current conventional farming system is damaging our soil. Why it's important to examine our relationship with the earth and the environment and to pay close attention to what we put into our bodies. How as a society, we have become deeply disconnected from nature, leading to the degradation of our soil and food systems. How and what action to take today. Don't wait until it's convenient or we have more time. How to improve soil health, which will ultimately improve the health of our planet and all human beings on this earth. In this thought-provoking episode of The HEAL Podcast, I am joined by my good friend Zach Bush, MD, and Alex Woodard - author of the new must-read book, Ordinary Soil. This captivating dialogue transcends the pages of Alex's book, addressing the pervasive issue of our societal separation from nature and the consequential demise of our soil and food systems. With an urgent call to return to nature in the face of what is quite possibly the 6th extinction event, the conversation emphasizes the importance of supporting the custodians of the land — our farmers. Zach and Alex passionately advocate for a collective remembrance of our ancestors, recognizing their enduring influence on our modern lives. Join us for an extraordinary exploration of Ordinary Soil and discover how, through mindful choices and realignment with the regenerative cycles of nature, we can collectively pave the way for a more balanced, nourished, and harmonious future. Each one of us possesses the power to be the change we need to see in the health of our planet and the survival of our species. But the time is now, and the call is indeed urgent. Zach Bush, MD is a distinguished multi-disciplinary physician specializing in internal medicine, endocrinology, and hospice care. Internationally recognized as an educator, he has garnered acclaim for his expertise in the microbiome and its profound implications for human health, soil health, food systems, and the vision of a regenerative future. Alex Woodard is a nationally recognized touring artist behind several critically acclaimed albums, has earned industry nods, and shared stages with many of his heroes. In a world where we are taught that there are certain metrics to success, it can be so easy to lose sight of our gifts and authentic selves trying to fit in. This episode's guest has learned that life is often not that linear, and our paths to success are winding and can never be the same as everyone else. All we need is to flow. Author and singer-songwriter Alex Woodard is back on the show to talk about how we can sow the seeds of flow, believing that opening up into the flow of life can lead us to the path that is most authentic to us. He shares his thoughts on finding our gifts, having success by living a balanced life, and listening to intuition versus instinct. Giving us a peek into his upcoming book, Ordinary Soil, Alex takes us into his foray into the “faction” genre to tell the story of a multi-generational family farming in Oklahoma Panhandle. From songwriting to book writing, Alex shows us how he surfs through life flowing into his passions. Find inspiration from his journey and the lessons that flowed along the way.Love the show? Why do people obsess over the illusion of “someday”? What is it about it that makes us believe that what we have now is going to be better when we get to that point in life someday? Singer-songwriter and author of Living Halfway, Alex Woodard, talks with Katherine Twells about his life journey and shares his own experiences that made him realize that sometimes, surrendering what you think the plan is going to be is the route we all should learn to take on. Alex emphasizes the fact that although our actions and life decisions impact how our lives turn out, we don't always have control on how things are going to be and that life's surprises can sometimes be life's best gifts to us.Love the show? Alex Woodard reminded me of how pliable our lives and dreams are if we let go. Alex's story is a powerful example of driving hard towards his goal of playing his music to thousands. On the eve of achieving his dream, the bottom fell out. His record contract vanished, his dog died and his dream became a nightmare. Enter stage left; he received a letter from a fan telling her story about loss and love. Alex decided to write her (Emily) a song based on her letter and send it to her. A new dream was born, For the Sender, became the project of Alex and team publishing books and music inspired by letters from the senders. Today he plays for thousands of people, raises money for charity and collaborates with top musicians. The irony is his original dream had similar ingredients, but once he let go of his desire for fame and fortune, his career took off as his story is rewritten focusing on others.
