Strap in for a journey down memory lane as we're joined by the ever-insightful Matt Fulton to revisit the rollicking world of '70s Australian sex comedies. Together, we traverse the risqué landscape of "Alvin Purple" and its sequel "Alvin Rides Again," dissecting how these flicks navigated the era's sexual liberation while tickling the nation's funny bone. From the critical lashings to the box office success, we dissect the allure of Alvin's mishaps, examining the films' cultural impact and their unique position in Aussie cinematic lore. With a mischievous chuckle, Matt and I explore the first film's clever blend of humor and eroticism, orchestrated by the sharp-witted Tim Burstall. We ponder the satirical role reversal of the sexual chase and how it mirrored the period's changing attitudes towards women's liberation and sex therapy. As we crack open the darker tones of the sequel, we delve into the complex narrative choices that stirred both entertainment and reflection during the transformative '70s.Lastly, we can't help but let out a hearty laugh as we discuss the unexpected narrative acrobatics of "Alvin Rides Again." From sex comedy to action-packed pastiche, we marvel at the sequel's leap into Bond-esque territory, complete with rocket launchers and speedboat chases. It's a wild ride through some of the most iconic, albeit occasionally cringe-worthy, moments in Australian film history that will leave you both nostalgic and critically engaged. Join us for this cheeky trip down memory lane, where Aussie cinema once dared to bare with a confident swagger.Matt's Socials:WebsiteBlueskyMy Geek CultureChampagne Comedy PodcastSupport the showA Dingo Ate My Movie Socials:WebsiteTwitterFacebookInstagramLetterboxdEmailMusic from the movies featured on the podcast: SpotifyApple MusicSupport Me At BuyMeACoffee Please note that this podcast often explores topics and uses language from past eras. Lee is back with part one of a two-part look at the soundtracks and scores of sex comedies, specifically those of the 1970s and 1980s, the raunchier the better! There was so much material to go through that he had to split each decade into its own super-sized episode of BotT, and even then he's barely scraping the surface. In part one we start off in the decade where the sex comedy really started to take off overseas at first: the 1970s! This was especially obvious in places like Great Britain and Italy, and this trend would seemingly influence North American sex comedies to push the envelope even further later in the decade, before they totally came to dominate in the 1980s. --Up Pompeii from "Up Pompeii" (1970) --Frankie Howerd --God's Children & Lola from "Percy" (1971) --The Kinks --Au Pair Girls 2 from "Au Pair Girls" (1972) --Roger Webb --Sessomatto from "How Funny Can Sex Be" (1973) --Armando Trovajoli --Alvin Purple from "Alvin Purple" (1973) --Brian Cadd --Lovin' Is from "Alice Goodbody" (1974) --Rick Harris, Candy & Mr. D --This is Your Life Timmy Lea from "Confessions of a Window Cleaner" (1974) --Su Cheyenne --Girl from Starship Venus from "The Girl from Starship Venus" (1975) --Don Lang --Confessions of Timmy Lee from "Confessions of a Pop Performer" (1975) --Three's a Crowd --Kipper; Accidents Will Happen; Oh Sha La La & The Clapham from "Confessions of a Pop Performer" (1975) --Kipper (Dominic Bugatti & Frank Musker) --Theme from "The Ups and Downs of a Handyman" (1975) --Vic Elms (vocals by Barry Stokes) --Sq. 1 - Titoli & Seq. 3 from "The Sensuous Nurse" (1975) --Gianfranco Plenizio --My Cruisin' Casanova from "Adventures of a Taxi Driver" (1976) --Adrienne Posta --The Love Bug from "What's Up Nurse!" Sexpostion is sex plus exposition, it's exposition with sex on the screen. Tantz Aerine addressed the topic of sexposition in an article last year, but what we're doing here is talking about the reason it even exists, why it isn't a new trend, and why it probably won't last. Basically, movies and TV shows always get more and more sex and nudity in them when broadcast standards are relaxed. Sex and nudity draw in viewers so they're always popular tools. Back in the 20s during the early days of Hollywood films had more sex and nudity, but then politics caught up with them, standards were introduced and that changed. This pattern has repeated over and over with every form of media delivery service and in every country (the introduction of video, porn films going mainstream in the 1970s, the rise of “art house” cinema, pay TV/cable TV etc). The main reason for the current trend of sexy stuff in TV shows isn't a reflection of modern culture in general, rather it's because broadcast standards for streaming content are loose because they haven't caught up with it yet. The sex and nudity is there because they can get away with it, same as has always happened in the past when standards and the rest of culture hasn't yet caught up. Some subjects we touch on are… a tangent into musicals, the sexposition heavy Australian TV sows Alvin Purple (1970s), Number 96 (1970s), Chances (1990s), Art house film directors like Almodovar and Fellini, and various brief mentions of modern TV that reintroduces the trend such as Deadwood, The Deuce, West world, The Witcher, and of course Game of Thrones.
