Warm up the water in your tiny tin bathtub and pull out your pastel pedal pushers hat as we bebop into John Waters's Cry-Baby. Did Waters achieve the ultimate level of Postmodern metatextual campiness by creating a pastiche of his own film style here? Can the power of a quality goth accessory really change hearts and minds? Is this perhaps the best Willem Dafoe cameo ever? And is Kim McGuire, aka "Hatchet-Face", basically the biggest badass who ever lived? We'll let you know after this sloppy, sloppy make-out session.
This week, "Jamuary" rolls on with the 1994 Brendan Fraser juggernaut "Airheads."
Linda Holmes is a best-selling author and one of the hosts of NPR's Pop Culture Happy Hour. But you know what an hour is that wasn't always happy? Melrose Place. Oh, it's true. Melrose Place was a nighttime soap opera in the 1990s and it told the stories of the residents of a fictitious apartment complex in Los Angeles where everyone's lives were complicated. The people were complicated, the relationships were complicated, even the maintenance plans for motorcycles were surprisingly complicated. Linda paid attention, though, and joins us to unravel - and sometimes re-ravel - the intricacies of the first season of Melrose Place. We could have gone on to subsequent seasons but honestly, you won't stay awake through even this update about the first season. Don't let the scholastic stress get to you, and prepare yourself for some ethnic slurs as we enroll in 1992's School Ties. Is young Brendan Fraser an actual Classical sculpture come to life? Was anyone expecting this cultural drama to actually have a complete thrilling sports scene in the middle of it? And does that shower scene mean there is footage out there of Damon and Fraser dong? We sometimes have answers but waspy white dude will always be pricks.

In keeping with the worlds 'Brendan Fraser Renaissance' it was time to discuss the film that started his career, School Ties. While this film is hard to watch for many reasons, it's still required viewing. The story is set in the 1950s and revolves around the anti-Semitism at a boys prep school. While the performances of emerging actors that we know so well today are front and center, it's Brendan Fraser that really gives such a powerful performance. This was Jai's first time watching and for me it's been a good while since I've seen it. Basically not only does it seem that boys prep schools are breeding grounds for evil in this film, however the adults are not much better. In our behind the scenes research we learned an incredible amount about where actress Amy Locane is now, prep fashion, and the casting process.*apologies for the weird audio---Get BONUS episodes on 90s TV and culture (Freaks & Geeks, My So Called Life, Buffy, 90s culture documentaries, and more...) and to support the show! This time on the show, Adam goes hell-bent for leather with his recommendation for Mel, the 1994 comedy Airheads. A rock band accidentally takes a radio station hostage when they try to get their demo played on the air. This is one of the most unappreciated '90s comedies that needs more love. It's got Brendan Fraser, Stevie Buscemi, and Adam Sander when he was subtle. What more can you want? Please rate, subscribe, and review. It really helps!
