In celebration of the 30th Anniversary of this classic from director David Fincher, it's IMAX showing & its release on 4K, I'm doing a retro review of “Se7en.' Brad Pitt plays Detective David Mills, who moves to a crime-ridden city with his wife, and is paired up with retiring detective William Somerset, played by Morgan Freeman. Thanks to a serial killer that appears to be preaching and forcing attrition on his victims concerning the Seven Deadly Sins, there will be no easing into the job for Detective Mills. Everything in this city is grimy, nasty and dark and so is what this killer is doing to teach seven peopkle a “lesson.” It'll take Somerset's temperance, wisdom and patience, along with Mills' drive, energy and passion to bring this killer down, if the killer doesn't take them, or a loved one, out first. This is the first of three films that Brad Pitt and David Fincher made together and it also made Fincher a top tier director. “Se7en” also stars Gwyneth Paltrow, R. Lee Ermey, Richard Roundtree, Reg E. Cathey, Peter Crombie, Hawthorne James, Richard Schiff and Kevin Spacey. Director Mary Herron and her co-screenwriter Guinevere Turner did what 'American Psycho' author Bret Easton Ellis thought was impossible: made a film of his controversial, considered-unfilmable 1991. novel. And the lens through which they espied Patrick Bateman proved exactly the right way to gain something meaningful out of what, frankly, is a pretty unreadable and repetitive novel. The astonishing lead performance from Christian Bale catapulted him to the stardom and rarified air he continues to occupy as an actor today. And the performance is a wonder to dissect, if you'll pardon the pun. Featuring a wonderful assortment of supporting actors like Willem Dafoe, Chloe Sevigny, Justin Theroux, Reese Witherspoon, Reg E. Cathey, Josh Lucas, Matt Ross, Jared Leto, Cara Seymour and Samantha Mathis, the film is one of the most essential films about NYC in the 80's.
The Lone Rangers, Chazz (Brendan Fraser), Rex (Steve Buscemi) and Pip (Adam Sandler) are trying to break into the music industry. Record exec, Jimmie Wing (Judd Nelson) isn't interested and local rock station, KPPX, won't play their demo. They do the only logical thing; arm themselves with squirt guns, take hostages (David Arquette, Reg E. Cathey, Nina Siemaszko) and take over Ian the Shark's (Joe Mantegna) show. A crowd gathers outside to party while they scramble to get the only surviving tape from Chazz's girlfriend, Kayla (Amy Locane) and be heard before studio head Milo (Michael McKean) turns Rebel Radio into easy listening. Local cops O'Malley (Ernie Hudson) and Wilson (Chris Farley) are having a hell of a time keeping it all contained. Turn it up, it's gonna be a wild night! Airheads - this week on Doom Generation. The gang survives the sarcastic apocalypse this week, as they review the Lori Petty led comic book movie, Tank Girl (1995). A fan pick from listener, Chris, who previously had us review Antichrist, this post apocalyptic edge-fest may have been doomed from the start, and definitely has an audience that loves it for its personality. With Ice-T, Reg E. Cathey, and even Iggy Pop unrecognizable as mutant kangaroo outfits, and Malcom McDowell as the big bad, you would think you were in for a treat. Maybe not so much. This week, the guys dive into an oft-misunderstood but absolutely insane comic book movie - Tank Girl. Should Tank Girl herself have been a gay icon of the 90s? Is that Ice-T playing a talking kangaroo man? Did the studio interference actually make things... better? How much quipping can one movie handle? NO SERIOUSLY... IS THAT ICE-T AS A TALKING KANGAROO MAN!? Check our social media on Sunday for the Sunday Screencrap and take a guess at our next movie! Cathey Tributes Following Backlash https://www.cbr.com/disney-plus-punisher-luke-cage-stan-lee-tribute-restored-marvel/ Disney+ has restored tributes to the late Stan Lee and Reg E. Cathey in The Punisher and Luke Cage, respectively. Earlier in April 2022, it was discovered that the streaming service had removed the two tributes from their respective appearances in the second season finales of The Punisher and Luke Cage. When fans caught wind of the decision, they were displeased, to say the least. Following the backlash, the two memorial tributes once again adjoin these two series in "The Defenders Saga." Whether these series will see any sort of revival remains to be seen. For a moment, it seemed that Daredevil was officially canon to the Marvel Cinematic Universe being that Matthew Murdock's live-action biography on Marvel's website was updated to include both the events of the series and the character's appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home. However, Marvel has since removed the mention of No Way Home from Murdock's television timeline. While Daredevil star Charlie Cox is rumored and reported to reprise his role in numerous upcoming MCU projects, there is no word on whether actors Mike Colter and/or Jon Bernthal will return as Luke Cage and Frank Castle, respectively. Bernthal did react to The Punisher landing on Disney+, but there has been no word from the actor on whether he has been asked to return any time soon. As for Colter, the actor revealed back in late 2020 that he had not been approached about returning, but that he'd "love to." ‘Moon Knight' Directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead on Joining the MCU, Helming Episodes 2 & 4, and ‘Loki' Season 2 https://collider.com/moon-knight-directors-justin-benson-aaron-moorhead-interview-loki-season-2-disney-plus/ Marvel's ‘Ironheart' Finds Its Directors While Ryan Coogler Boards as Executive Producer https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/marvel-ironheart-show-directors-ryan-coogler-1235128280/ Ryan Coogler and his production banner, Proximity Media, have joined the creative team of Ironheart, Marvel's Disney+ series featuring the titular Iron Man-adjacent character. At the same time, the show has firmed up its filmmaking talent, hiring Sam Bailey and Angela Barnes as directors. Dominique Thorne is toplining Ironheart, playing Riri Williams, a brilliant teenage inventor who, in the comics, builds her own version of the Iron Man suit in an MIT dorm. Disney+ Removes The Defenders' Post-Credits Punisher Teaser https://www.cbr.com/disney-plus-removes-defenders-punisher-teaser-marvel/ The Defenders on Disney+ seems to be missing its post-credits teaser for The Punisher. When the show originally aired on Netflix, The Defenders featured a teaser trailer for The Punisher as its post-credits scene. The trailer saw Frank Castle/Punisher (Jon Bernthal) using a sledgehammer to smash his logo into concrete while revealing footage from the show. As Twitter user Ian Cardona notes, that teaser for The Punisher no longer appears at the end of The Defenders. CBR has verified that this change was made in both the Canadian and American markets. She-Hulk Reportedly Bumped Back on Marvel's Disney+ Schedule https://www.cbr.com/she-hulk-reportedly-bumped-back-marvel-schedule-mcu/ A leaker on Reddit with a proven track record in regards to WandaVision suggested She-Hulk could arrive in very late 2022 or even early 2023 as various VFX houses hustle to complete post-production. This information lines up with a report from March about She-Hulk facing some behind-the-scenes difficulties. Matt Murdock's character page on the Marvel site includes a detailed "On Screen Full Report" of the events experienced by Charlie Cox's hero. Not only does the report detail all three seasons of his Netflix adventures, but it also mentions that "Sometime later, Matt was hired as an attorney to defend Peter Parker." Here's the excerpt of the important part: Soon after, Matt attended the funeral for Father Lantom, where he made peace with Sister Maggie. Now in a better state of mind than he had been in quite a while, Matt fully reconciled with Karen and Foggy and the three of them discussed the idea of reforming their law firm with Karen now as the firm's lead investigator and third partner. Sometime later, Matt was hired as an attorney to defend Peter Parker, as Peter had been publicly outed as Spider-Man and accused of Mysterio's murder. Though Peter was legally cleared of any wrongdoing, Matt warned him he'd still have to face the court of public opinion and advised Harold “Happy” Hogan to hire a good lawyer. As if on cue, a protestor threw a brick through the window of the Parkers' apartment in support of Mysterio. Fortunately, due to his heightened senses, Matt was able to catch the brick before it hurt anyone inside. When Peter asked him how he was able to do that, Matt claimed it was because he was a really good lawyer and left it at that. Marvel's confirmation that Murdock became Peter Parker's lawyer "Sometime later" than the dramatic ending of Daredevil Season 3 appears to indicate Charlie Cox will continue playing the same version of his character, not a Multiversal Variant as many had speculated. DISNEY+ Disney+ Removes Stan Lee Tribute From Marvel Netflix Show https://thedirect.com/article/marvel-stan-lee-tribute-disney-netflix-show A tribute to Stan Lee has been removed from The Punisher's second season finale, which was released in January 2019. The "In Loving Memory of Stan Lee" tribute is now replaced with a prolonged black screen before the credits. The reasoning behind the removal is unknown, but a prevailing theory is that the scene preceding the tribute has Frank Castle gunning down a group of people. Of course, this isn't the confirmed cause of the change—after all, that's how it was when the tribute first aired with the show back in 2019. Oddly enough, the Stan Lee tribute found at the end of Jessica Jones season 3 is still present on Disney+. ‘Star Wars' vs. Marvel: Which Disney+ Shows Are Most-Viewed https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/star-wars-vs-marvel-which-disney-shows-are-most-viewed-1235122942/ Marvel Leak Spoils Daredevil and Kingpin's Next MCU Appearance https://www.cbr.com/marvel-daredevil-kingpin-mcu-appearance-spoiled-echo/ A new leak seems to spoil the next Marvel Cinematic Universe appearance for Vincent D'Onofrio's Wilson Fisk/Kingpin and Charlie Cox's Matt Murdock/Daredevil. Cathey Tribute: 'Why Do This?' https://www.cbr.com/luke-cage-showrunner-disney-plus-reg-cathey-tribute-removal-marvel/ Disney+ removed the tribute to Reg E. Cathey from the Season 2 finale credits of Luke Cage, promoting showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker to call out the streamer for its actions. "I mean, why do this? Reg E Cathey was part of the heart and soul of Season Two," Coker wrote on Twitter. "We didn't feel obligated to dedicate the season to him just because he died -- we felt obligated because we loved him and he was a galvanizing force." The star, who portrayed Jackie Robinson in 42 and James Brown in Get on Up before being cast as Wakandan prince-turned-King T'Challa in 2016's Captain America: Civil War, became the first Black actor to lead a solo Marvel Studios movie when reprising his role in the Ryan Coogler-directed Black Panther. The blockbuster, which grossed $1.34 billion globally, earned seven total Academy Award nominations and was the first superhero movie to be nominated for Best Picture. "Chadwick was diagnosed with stage III colon cancer in 2016, and battled with it these last 4 years as it progressed to stage IV," reads a statement from Boseman's team. It was "during and between countless surgeries and chemotherapy" throughout this private illness that the actor filmed Thurgood Marshall biography Marshall, period music drama Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, and the Spike Lee-directed Da 5 Bloods.” Recommended by Agent Michelle: Black Jeopardy with Chadwick Boseman – SNL https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hzMzFGgmQOc OUTRO [56:50] Haley, Lauren, Michelle and Stargate Pioneer love to hear back from you about how you would rate the episode we just discussed, your top 5 Marvel character lists, your science of Marvel questions, who would you pick in an all-female Avenger team, or which Marvel male you would like to see shirtless. Thoughts? Comments? You can contact me by calling or texting 201-429-0274. If you leave a voicemail please be aware, you only have 3 minutes. Email me at improveandhavefun@gmail.com .. Join the conversation on the blog (and find the full show notes)by going here https://bit.ly/2LrGU2k ..Thanks for watching/listening! On this episode, I've put together an audio blog where you follow me around for a day. I also have quick TV/Movie reviews of: GLOW season 2 Incredibles 2 Luke Cage season 2 Another look at Star Wars: The Last Jedi There are spoilers! Finally I discuss two quotes from recent audiobooks/podcasts I've listened to which had an impact on me. They come from Robin Sharma and Eckhart Tolle. Quick Reviews Incredibles 2 review- This movie was wonderful. I felt there was too much focus on Jack-Jack. Not much on Dash. The action in the film was much more dynamic than I expected. Collider Video late last year had a top 50 superhero movies of all time. They ranked the first film movie 7th overall. When I saw this, I said 'What?!' But after viewing the sequel, I appreciate the first one a lot more. These films are fun and heartwarming. I want more with these characters and this world. I love how unique each character looks particularly Rick Dicker played by Jonathan Banks of Breaking Bad fame. Dicker even looks like Banks. Star Wars: The Last Jedi-3rd viewing observations The Last Jedi is now available on Netflix. You can find my original review (with friends) here https://bit.ly/2rxJkHg . This is my 3rd viewing of this movie. I'm still breaking it down and trying to figure out why it's so polarizing to fans. Here are some observations. -Poe Dameron shows no sympathy for the troops which die because of his actions at the beginning of the film. -Luke plays a crazy old master Jedi who will train a young apprentice, similar to Yoda and Luke in Empire Strikes Back -Rey feels she can turn Kylo Ren towards the light side, comparable with Luke and Vader in Return of the Jedi -Rey has a gun turret action sequence in the Millenium Falcon, similar to Han in the Star Wars: A New Hope. This film series has light, fun entries, and dark ones. In the dark category I'd throw in Revenge of the Sith, Empire Strikes Back, and this one. Luke Cage Season 2 review-Pros & Cons Pros -The show was well paced as opposed to the first season which ended(I felt)a few episodes early. -Bushmaster. Great presence and fighting style. Great backstory. Look forward to seeing him again in future seasons -Episode 10. Loved seeing Luke Cage & Iron Fist in an episode together. I'm ready for a six-episode season of Heroes for Hire. Throw in the Daughters of the Dragon in that mini-series too. -I liked that this season acknowledged the events of the Defenders. -The characters in the show were great. Alfre Woodard. This is her show. Theo Rossi is incredible as well. Sahr Ngaujah as Anansi always has a presence when he's on screen. I saw him in Fela on Broadway; he was tremendous there. Reg E. Cathey is always solid, may he r.i.p. Chaz Lamar Shephard as Piranha Jones was funny. Antonique Smith as Nandi was dislikeable. Superlative job by all mentioned. Cons -This show shouldn't be called 'Luke Cage. It should be called 'Mariah Stokes.' She has more screen time than the hero. It's like seeing a Transformers movie. The film series carries the name of the robot race in the title, but the majority of the films are humans running around. -As I said earlier, this season had a better pace than the first, but I felt it was still too long. -Tilda Dillard was beautiful, but I wasn't blown away by her performance. Glow season 2 review -This was Betty Gilpin's season. She presented several shades of this character; Debbie Eagan. Going through a divorce, becoming a producer on the show, being a mother, hashing out her issues with Ruth Wilder(Allison Brie). We go from rooting for her to sympathizing with her, and plain disliking her. Her smile is terrible as well. Wonderful work. -We spent more time with characters which we didn't in the first season like Arthie and the new castmate Yolanda who was sexy and fun. I also like Marc Maron warming up to Allison Brie and building more of a relationship with his daughter Justine. -Allison Brie is the heart of this show. I can't believe how much shit she takes from Betty Gilpin and Marc Maron at the beginning of the season. I enjoyed her taking more of a creative role in the show and finding a love interest. -The runtime and number of episodes are palatable. It left me wanting more. The Netflix Marvel shows should take the similar format. -My only complaint is that the comedy didn't always land with me. Whereas the first season I had more laughs, this season I didn't. This is one of my favorite original Netflix shows. I want more. Bring on season 3. Two Recent Audio Quotes which Impacted Me These are two recent pieces of audio that made me think. I want to apply these teachings in my own life. The first one is from Robin Sharma. On his Youtube channel, he has a video called 'How to Fearlessly Speak your Opinion.' Here is a link to the video https://bit.ly/2uuOnr2. The direct section which impacted me is this here: 'A lot of people ask me when I meet them at a live event, or maybe it's online, Robin, I want to speak my truth, but something prevents me from doing it. Maybe it's at the office. Maybe it's in your intimate relationship; maybe it's with your family. I don't know where it is for you, but I wanted to make sure I offered you some valuable insights to help you speak your truth even when your voice shakes.' 'Because ultimately, one of the ways that we can develop self-respect, and one of the ways that you can build self-worth, is speaking your opinion and sharing what's important to you and putting a voice to what you need to say, even if people don't understand you or also if people don't like it.' 'I think it was Dr. Seuss who said, speak authentically. Be real. Be yourself. Share your opinions. And here was his line: "Because those who matter don't mind, and those who mind don't matter." 'And there's a lot of wisdom if you wanted to deconstruct that idea of Dr. Seuss. It's pretty powerful because ultimately, I believe you can say whatever you need to say, so long as you say it with respect. And so if it's with your intimate partner, and there's something that's bothering you, but you want to say it ... First of all, when you say it, it's like you release a pressure valve. You know what most people do in any relationship, they swallow what they need to say, even though it's incredibly important to them. And here's what that does in your professional associations and your relationships.' 'Every time you swallow something you know you needed to say so that you're clear, it builds up. It builds up emotionally. It builds up psychically, and it eventually, that pressure builds up, and finally, it will come out in conflict. It happens at the office. There's a teammate, and you don't say something. Well, here's what bothers me or here's what I need to say, or here was my opinion. Over time, the wound will fester, and it will damage the relationship.' 'And I've seen it so often in home relationships, in personal relationships. A little thing that could have been handled like, "I didn't like the way that you said that to me," or "I wanted to go to do this on the weekend but you wanted to do that, and I didn't feel heard." And rather than just saying it, because most of us don't know how to say it, they don't teach us how to communicate at world class in school; we swallow it because human beings don't like conflict.' 'Because we're tribal, and I don't want to get into the neuroscience and the psychology of tribalism, but we're tribal. That's how we survived thousands of years ago. And so now we do have an instinct hardwired into us, not to have conflict, because we want to fit into the tribe to survive. But if you don't speak your truth, when you know you need to share your opinion, well, you swallow the words. You take the emotions.' 'And here's what it does. It not only then damages the working relationship or the personal relationship. Here is the powerful insight. It hurts your relationship with yourself. And I think in many ways, all lack of success and creativity and productivity in someone's life, comes down to a lack of self-worth.' 'One of the best things you can learn how to do is learn how to honor yourself. Learn how to build self-worth. Learn how to build self-respect. Learn how to build self-love. And one of the best ways to do that is to speak your truth even when the fire is on. ' Hearing this was like a shining light in the dark. How many nights I'd lay awake in bed thinking for hours how a particular co-worker(or friend) may have rubbed me the wrong way. How I can get revenge, make them feel how I'm feeling at the time. Had I used Mr. Sharma's method I could've used that mental energy elsewhere. I love the self-care angle in his message. I interpret as it being vital in getting the unsaid, the resentment out of you. By talking to the individual directly. I found speaking to a confidant or journaling helps as well. The second quote is from an audiobook. Eckhart Tolle's 'Power Of Now.' I also purchased the book as I'm hoping to read through it, highlight other sections and go over them. This is pulled from Chapter 8. 'I always thought that true enlightenment is not possible except through love in a relationship between a man and a woman. Isn't this what makes us whole again? How can one's life be fulfilled until that happens?' 'Is that true in your experience? Has this happened to you?' 'Not yet, but how could it be otherwise? I know that it will happen.' 'In other words, you are waiting for an event in time to save you. Is this not the core error that we have been talking about? Salvation is not elsewhere in place or time. It is here and now.' 'What does that statement mean, "Salvation is here and now?" I don't understand it. I don't even know what salvation means.' 'Most people pursue physical pleasures or various forms of psychological gratification because they believe that those things will make them happy or free them from a feeling of fear or lack.' 'Happiness may be perceived as a heightened sense of aliveness attained through physical pleasure or a more secure and more complete sense of self-attained through some form of psychological gratification. This is the search for salvation from a state of unsatisfactoriness or insufficiency. Invariably, any satisfaction that they obtain is short-lived, so the condition of happiness or fulfillment is usually projected once again onto an imaginary point away from the here and now.' "When I obtain this or I'm free of that, then I will be okay." This is the unconscious mindset that creates the illusion of salvation in the future.' 'True salvation is fulfillment, peace, life in all its fullness. It is to be who you are, to feel within you the good that has no opposite, the joy of being that depends on nothing outside itself. It is perceived not as a moving experience, but as an abiding presence.' 'In theistic language, it is to know God not as something outside you, but as your innermost essence. True salvation is to identify yourself as an inseparable part of the timeless and formless One Life from which all that exists derives its being.' 'True salvation is a state of freedom from fear, from suffering, from a perceived state of lack and insufficiency and, therefore, from all wanting, needing, grasping, and clinging. It is freedom from compulsive thinking, from negativity and, above all, from past and future as a psychological need.' 'Your mind is telling you that you cannot get there from here. Something needs to happen, or you need to become this or that before you can be free and fulfilled. It is saying, in fact, that you need time, that you need to find, sort out, do, achieve, acquire, become or understand something before you can be free or complete.' 'You see time as the means to salvation, whereas, in truth, it is the most significant obstacle to salvation. You think that you can't get there from where and who you are at this moment because you are not yet complete or good enough, but the truth is that here and now is the only point from where you can get there. You get there by realizing that you are there already.' 'You find God the moment you realize that you don't need to seek God, so there's no "only way" to salvation. Any condition can be used, but no particular state is necessary. However, there is only one point of access, the now. There can be no salvation away from this moment.' Being good enough right now. Not waiting for a person, or buying a thing, to get to where you want to go. I've gone down that route many times where I felt that if I purchased these clothes or this camera or this drone, THEN I will matter. So sad to reflect and acknowledge that being the case. We must go through the journey to reach the destination right? I do have a slight counter to this point. If there is a skill you want to improve, focusing on that skill and being around a community which nurtures it, will enhance your ability in that area even quicker. But that spark, the vision, the drive resides within us. We light that flame. It all begins with a decision. Listening to audio is my weapon of choice when it comes to education. Enjoyed this?
Netflix surprised everyone last Sunday when they announced that the third film in the Cloverfield franchise would be debuting on their streaming service immediately after The Big Game, despite nobody having seen it and there being no advance hype or build up. But was this a bold new approach to film distribution, or the result of Paramount, desperate to offload a bad film, finding an outlet for it? Why not both? Matt and Ed address these questions and more as they address the considerable flaws of The Cloverfield Paradox, and the greater conundrum of Netflix itself; a service which has the potential to bring films to a huge audience instantaneously, but which more often than not serves as a place where films go to be forgotten. They also discuss the first Solo trailer and others bits of Star Wars news, get excited about the forthcoming Black Dynamite followup, and note the deaths of John Mahoney, Reg E. Cathey, and Johann Johannsson. 00:00:00 - 00:04:35 - Intro 00:04:36 - 00:38:17 - News 00:38:18 - 01:23:21 - Matt & Ed discuss The Cloverfield Paradox and Netflix more generally 01:23:22 - 01:31:16 - SRS Recommends & Outro

The initial tests worked but Reed continues to work on the project for the next seven years until he's spotted at a science fair by industrial scientist Dr. Franklin Storm (Reg E. Cathey). Franklin informs Reed that his teleportation machine in fact transports matter to another dimension and back. Impressed that Richards created this prototype in his garage, Franklin offers him a job at his company, all the resources he needs and a team consisting of his son Johnny Storm (Michael B. Jordan) and daughter Sue Storm (Kate Mara) and Victor Von Doom (Toby Kebbell), a former employee of Franklin's who became despondent when he couldn't complete a similar project. Working together the team complete the project and open a portal to "Zero Planet". Reed, Victor, Johnny decide to take a drunken trip to the planet dragging Ben Grimm along for the joyride. But disaster strikes and the team are attacked by an unknown substance on the planet. Sue Storm, who remained in the Baxter Building facility while the boys went on the trip, saves most of the team by reactivating the recall protocol. Unfortunately Victor is left behind as he took the brunt of the infection from the mysterious substance and the team believe he is dead. The team soon discover that their bodies have been greatly changed. Johnny is constantly on fire, Reed's body stretches in fantastic ways, Sue phases in and out of visibility and poor Ben Grimm is transformed into a giant rock monster. In order to cure their illnesses and strip resources from the planet for earth, the team are convinced by the army to retry their experiment and return to Zero planet. When they return they find Victor who has been sustained by the planet for the year he has been missing. He is angered by the notion that the army wants to strip the planet of its resources and decides to go on a killing spree and destroy Earth.
