In the tradition of Dale Clark's memorable fan publications, comes the Dark Shadows Podcast of Questions & Answers volume THREE! In this installment, Penny Dreadful addresses the following questions: How did Roxanne become a vampire in the unaltered 1840? Why isn't Chris Jennings' brother Tom also werewolf? Was Angelique really at Collinwood in the original run of 1897, as we see in a flashback? Is it an error that silver bullets can be used to destroy vampires on Dark Shadows? How can Barnabas be rendered unconscious in a car accident if he's a vampire? Why does Josette's music box play two different themes? What happened to the blackmail money that Elizabeth Collins Stoddard deposited into a Swiss bank account for Jason McGuire? When the ghost of Sarah Collins says, “Those who were here before have come back, and they're angry, and there's someone in this house they want to destroy,” to whom is she referring? The episode ends with promotion for other Dark Shadows and horror-related podcasts, shows, books, and projects. Interview with Father Evil - Horror Conventions and more Episode 103Father Evil comes from the creative mind of Lou Avilleira. He first came up with the idea of the un- Holy Father in 2009 for a Halloween party. He received such positive feedback from his character that he decided to take it a little further. Starting out at Chiller Theatre as one of many costumed horror fans, he soon rose above the rest. Father Evil is now well known amongst the horror community and has an extensive fan following.
This is the 1st (of 3) in our series of HALLOWEEN / HORROR podcasts for the month of October Today we talk with SARA KARLOFF about her wonderful father and legendary actor BORIS KARLOFF who starred in over 160 films & tv shows. We find out what Boris Karloff was really like! We also talk about the chiller theatre convention (in NJ), the website (karloff.com) and we even ask Sara some music questions. ************** ABOUT SARA: Sara Karloff was born on her father's 51st birthday, November 23, 1938. Boris Karloff was filming Son of Frankenstein at the time. Sara jokes that she was “his most expensive birthday present ever.” Ms. Karloff is widowed, has 2 grown sons and 3 grandchildren. She has lived in Rancho Mirage, CA since 1981. In 1993, following the death of her step-mother, Evelyn Karloff, Sara assumed the responsibility for the persona and licensing rights relating to her famous father and formed Karloff Enterprises. The company's goal is to maintain a standard of excellence and appropriateness when the name or likeness of her father is used. Through the licensing process she has been able to make merchandise and collectibles available to her father's fans. Sara met Ron Chaney (great-grandson of Lon Chaney Sr. and grandson of Lon Chaney Jr.) and Bela Lugosi Jr. (son of Bela Lugosi) for the first time in 1993 at a Famous Monsters of Filmland convention. As a result of that meeting a very special alliance was formed. Although initiated by Ron Chaney, Ms. Karloff spear-headed a three-year effort to have their respective famous relatives immortalized in a series of commemorative United States Postage Stamps. Petitions were circulated all over the country, and with the help of the Screen Actors Guild, the media, innumerable genre magazines, and thousands of fans worldwide, more than 17,000 signatures were collected in support of this project. It was the legions of fans who made this effort a reality. Sara continues to attend conventions around the world speaking about her iconic father and his remarkable legacy. Her favorite audiences are students whose questions reinforce her belief that these classic films are multi-generational in their appeal and their continued popularity is thanks to the wonderful fans! Be sure to visit KARLOFF.com for some wonderful items and information on Boris Karloff. ************* KNOW GOOD MUSIC can be found on Podbean (host site), Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Iheart Radio, Pandora and almost anywhere you listen to podcasts. It's not just a cookbook to pull out in October,” Sargent says. “My recipes are thoughtful and creative meals that can be served any time of the year.” Richard S. Sargent was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Some of his earliest memories are of sitting in front of the TV after school, watching reruns of Chiller Theatre with his mom. You can blame her for his obsession with horror films. Richard is an award-winning actor, director, producer, playwright, and filmmaker. You can find some of his short plays published on Amazon via Left Coast Publishing. His short film, Meat, described as “torture porn with bacon,” was released in the horror anthology World of Death. Richard has always been interested in creative cooking. Most of his day jobs were in restaurants and on food trucks. After taking a few cooking classes, Richard decided doing it for a living would take all of the fun out of it. So he found a new way to keep cooking fun: The Horror Movie Night Cookbook! When he isn't doing theater, cooking for his friends, or watching horror films, he is performing with the band he and his husband created—The Green Winter. Horror movie conventions are one of the best places to be at if you are a die-hard fan. There's plenty to see, buy, and people to meet, both new and old friends, as well as celebrities. Horror conventions were a very important part of a lot of us horror fans "growing up" as we learned more and more about the genre, building our collections, or just meeting new people that have become lifelong friends, or even a wife! This is our first part in a series of episodes on conventions, so we're going to start out at the beginning for us, such as how they all started for us, and which ones did we go to, to the current shows that we still attend. These are the different conventions that we mention during this episode: Chiller Theatre, Cinema Wasteland, Cinevent, Crypticon, Famous Monsters, Fangoria's Weekend of Horrors, Fanex, Flashback Weekend, HorrorHound Weekend, Mid-Summer Scream, Monster Bash, Monsterpalooza, 25th Anniversary Night of the Living Dead Convention, Scarefest, Texas Frightmare

After attending his first horror convention, Lou Avilleira knew he wanted to dress up for the next one. He created a character he called Father Evil for his second “con” and was amazed by the positive feedback he got. So much so that he started attending cons regularly dressed as Father Evil and developed his own cult following among horror fans. Then things got serious. When he turned 40 he gave up his lifelong quest to fit in and decided to stop caring what other people thought. That allowed him to embrace - and become - this character, who is getting close to providing enough income that Lou can give up his day job and become “the Father” full time. Guest Bio Father Evil comes from the creative mind of Lou Avilleira. He first came up with the idea of the Holy Father in 2009 for a Halloween party. He received such positive feedback from his character that he decided to take it a little further. Starting out at Chiller Theatre as one of many costumed horror fans, he soon rose above as one of the best. Father Evil is now well known amongst the horror community with an extensive fan following. Lou Avilleira was born and raised in Perth Amboy, New Jersey. Born of Cuban immigrants, he was the first generation born in America. Having an early love of horror due to the influence of his mother, he's always had a love for the dark side. He is happily married to his wife of 15 years, Sarah, and has a son, Xavier. Lou currently resides in Woodbridge Township, New Jersey. The Birth of Father EvilLou's character, Father Evil, was born in the ‘90s as a drawing that hung in a trendy coffee spot in Rutgers, NJ, called Indigo Jones. Lou saw that the shop hung creations from local artists and decided to submit one of his own. He created a cross between a ghastly, priestly looking figure, the Joker and Reverend Henry Kane from Poltergeist II. The figure had his hands in a prayer position and behind him it said, "In nomine patris, et filii, et spiritus sancti," "in the name of the father, the son and holy spirit." Lou has always been creative. In second grade, he memorized the pattern to draw Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and trained his hand to draw it. Growing up, he loved comic books, especially the X-Men. Then, around 2006, a friend of his wife's was going to a horror convention, a “con” in the parlance. His wife knew Lou loved horror so the three of them went. Lou fell in love and vowed to dress up the next time he attended. Two years later, Lou made good on the promise. He was brainstorming on what to dress up as. He wondered what would scare people if they saw it in a dark alley. He discarded a clown, a vampire, a zombie - they've all been done before. He landed on a possessed priest, because if it can get to a priest, what chance do you have? He thought it would be a one-time thing. He got a $20 priest costume at Party City. He already sported a chop-style beard (though less glorious than it is today!) and he could arch his eyebrows and make an evil face. He got a pair of white-out contacts, hung a huge cross on his chest, and he was ready! I Think We've Got Something HereThe reception from other attendees was fantastic. People were asking to take pictures with him and he was loving it. As he made his way into one of the rooms, an Italian horror movie director caught sight of him. The director had a line of about 20 people for autographs but stepped away to talk to Lou. He told Lou the costume was so original, simple, but to the point. “Oh my God. I never saw. This is so simple. It's it's bad, but good.” He wondered if it could be that easy. In 2010, he started going to the cons more regularly, always dressed as Father Evil. In 2012, the year he turned 40, he started to take it seriously. He got serious about his outfit and upgraded from the $20 Halloween costume. Lou says he felt like a Phoenix coming out of the ashes. He says he found himself. Giving himself permission to...

Andrew Wilkow is the host of "The Wilkow Majority" on Sirius XM Patriot, "Wilkow" on CRTV, and a long time good friend of ours at the podcast. It's now become tradition that every year at Emmett O'Lunney's in Times Square, New York City, he hosts a Veteran's Day event benefiting different grassroots charities in the community. This year, the money is going to Operation Chillout, Wishes for Warriors, Stop Soldier Suicide, Horses for Heroes, and American Warrior Initiative. You'll hear all about what each of them do on this episode. The way it works is that there is going to be a vet ride of bikers from Harley Davidson in Hope, NJ to the bar for the event. If you want to ride, you just need to give a $30 minimum donation which also gets you a shirt, and you can sign up right now for that through Eventbrite. For you non-bikers, be at the bar for the Voices of Veterans broadcast from 1-4 PM EST on November 11th, and long-sleeve shirts will be available there for a minimum $25 donation (that is if any are left by than!) Now, for those of you outside of the area, you can still donate and get a limited shirt through Andrew's webstore. Of course, we also get into some other talk while Andrew joins us in studio. We talk about the midterm elections, and the problems we see in today's mainstream media. We touch on a recent Newsrep article of some disturbing war crime allegations against the Navy SEALs by writer Stavros Atlamazoglou. Also, Andrew tells a great bar fight story about CJ Ramone from Chiller Theatre in New Jersey that you won't want to miss. In an interview seven years in the making, Vinnie Vincent joins us this week. Undoubtedly one of the most intense rock records ever made, Vinnie Vincent Invasion was a natural topic choice. Our Albums Unleashed criteria is simple; discuss the making of an album we love with a key player in its creation. The debut album by Vinnie Vincent Invasion is an over-the-top, face-melting masterpiece. [caption id="attachment_38337" align="alignright" width="350"] Vinnie Vincent [/caption] Vinnie is incredibly candid in this long-form discussion. After thirty-plus years of others sharing their story on this album, it's namesake goes on on the record to share his memories. Moreover, Vinnie discusses the back story of how Invasion went from being an album title into becoming a band. Additionally, you'll hear him share revelations never heard about the studio environment for this album. Notably, the intense, meticulous nature of how this album was pieced together is an interesting story unto itself. As can be seen, 2018 is shaping up to be the comeback year of Vinnie Vincent. This week on Filmmaking Sucks, Lindsay and Manny discuss what is like working the convention circuit. Many indie filmmakers, especially those in the horror genre, decide to forego the traditional distribution route, and opt instead to sell their films themselves by running tables at conventions like Monster Mania, Chiller Theatre, Horrorhound, Texas Frightmare, Cinema Wasteland, and more. Here on the North-East coast, the convention circuit filmmakers are like a family, and these events are like a reunion to us. We love doing the shows, seeing each other, sometimes filming in the hotels, and hanging out with everyone. We'll discuss many of the perks, and the not-so-perks of choosing this path. The costs involved, the legalities, and the benefits of building relationships within this community. We also discuss how working conventions differ from doing film festivals, and our personal feelings on the two venues. You can catch us at the Severed Film Fest at the Shearman Theater on May 27th in Stroudsberg, PA and for the screening of Theta States at 2:40pm at the First Contact Film Festival on May 28th, at Camp Jefferson in Lake Hopatcong, NJ! Subscribe to us on iTunes, Stitcher, YouTube, Google Play, or your favorite podcatching app. And don't forget to rate and review us! Justin Purvis never thought he'd be a game designer, but Movie Buff Game was his ticket to using his improv and passion for acting as a career! Connect with Justin Purvis and Movie Buff Game moviebuffgame.com twitter.com/moviebuffcg Facebook.com/MovieBuffGame justin@moviebuffgame.com Today's guest, Justin Purvis, is a dreamer who found a different way to make his dreams come true. He developed a card game called Movie Buff which lets you flex your movie knowledge. I found out about his game while hanging out with Kathleen Kelly (SpecialMouse.com) up in North Jersey at a convention called Chiller Theatre. We ran into Justin at his booth there and got to learn the game first hand and we wound up both purchasing the game and inviting him to come down to my studio and record an episode of Dreamers Podcast. For this week's monologue I decided to take a slightly different approach by having previous guests Matt Borelli and Paul D'Ariano to play through the game here in the studio. Find out how to play Movie Buff from Justin himself by watching the video below! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2FRTZLMLTiA Also check out Justin Purvis in a documentary he and his brother stared in about going blind and driving across the country. Shoot me your questions to Joe@SuperJoePardo.com. Read more about Movie Buff Game and Justin Purvis Buff Beginnings Movie Buff was born out of sheer determination among film fiend friends to crown a true movie master. Casual conversations turned into competitive play to see who could sustain film threads the longest and beget bragging rights, the most valuable treasure in the kingdom. When Justin Purvis, Movie Buff's inventor, would kick off a casual game with family or friends who weren't necessarily movie mavens, he realized that creating strategic opportunities to keep them in the game escalated the fun, and that Movie Buff is inherently a different game every time, because the game solely depends on each individual player's unique movie knowledge, not pre-set trivia questions. In 2009, Justin began figuring out how to best transform Movie Buff into a great card game that could really propel play through twists and turns that infuse energy, and keep things interesting for players of all levels. In addition to the Actor and Movie Trivia Cards, he introduced Role and Quote Cards and Strategy Cards like Edit, Cut, Take 5, and Reverse Angle, so that it was truly anyone's game since winning now relied on not only movie knowledge, but also the cards each player was dealt. Movie Buff has morphed into a truly unique game that can be enjoyed by players over and over again. Its replay-ability really sets Movie Buff apart. No matter how many times you play it, the game will always be different. The X factor is YOU! Each player brings to the table their unique movie knowledge and truly creates the game. It's easy to learn, fun to play, and hard to put down. Buff Brains Movie Buff inventor, Justin Purvis, is a talented improvisational comedy performer, coach, teacher, and producer. He has studied with Improv Olympic, Annoyance, and Groundlings Theaters. Justin also performed, coached, and taught with Washington Improv Theater from 2005-2014. He's performed in improv festivals across the country including the Capital Fringe Festival, and he earned his BA in Theater from the University of Maryland, College Park. Justin's passion for movies pushed him to create Movie Buff. When not obsessing over flicks, you can find him making his wife, friends, and newborn son, Finnegan, laugh ‘til it hurts. Episode 216
