However, it was not always this way – she started her career in small animal practice with very minimal dentistry knowledge. She was fortunate to have a great mentor in her first job where she learned a lot and her desire to learn more grew. Once she attended her first Veterinary Dental Forum in 2013, she KNEW dentistry was her passion - and became affectionately known as “Toothy Thomson”. With time and support from her family, friends, collogues and a big ‘shove' from her mentor she applied for a dentistry and oral surgery residency and was overjoyed when she matched at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. During her residency her passion grew not only for dentistry, but also for teaching. And because life is always full of surprises Dr. Thomson found herself at a crossroad in 2020 in the early stages of the pandemic – so she started her own mobile dentistry practice! In addition to with working alongside small animal general practice teams, she also became very active online sharing her knowledge. Amy Thomson has pretty much done it all as an artist manager, and is now disrupting the modern music industry from another angle as Chief Catalog Officer of Hipgnosis Song Management. Before joining Hipgnosis in 2020, Amy ran her company ATM artists, and has managed acts including Seal, DJ Snake, and Swedish House Mafia. Most famously, Amy took Swedish House Mafia from being a baby band to kings of the globally dominant EDM scene of the early 2010s. She also worked closely with Kanye West on the stunning marketing campaigns launched during his Yeezus era. On this MBW Podcast (supported by Voly Music), Amy discusses the three areas of the music business that she believes need drastic change. Those areas are: (1) NDAs. That's nondisclosure agreements in artist and songwriter contracts; (2) Data – as in the flow of data to music makers and the vast inefficiencies that bad data is causing; and (3) Service and royalties, particularly the level of service that catalog artists are receiving from labels. Claims Thomson: "I think that the service of record labels for 99% of artists since 2006 has been absolutely shocking. In 2006, when streaming was launched 30 million records got re-released [on streaming platforms]...  "Labels are getting better at [marketing catalog records]. But when I say better, that means instead of 500 catalog projects a year [being prioritized for marketing by the major record companies], maybe there's now 700 catalog projects a year. "There are 30 million records on Spotify. [And] 75% of streaming is catalog, and that grew 10% last year."

This week I'm joined by Amy Thomson, an incredibly inspiring entrepreneur and author of the book Moody: A 21st Century Hormone Guide which was published earlier this year. Amy started her first business at age 23 in 2011, a communications company working with brands such as Nike, Microsoft and Diageo. In 2016 after experiencing severe burnout from working long hours and travelling for work, she experienced some changes in her body. As a result of the burnout, Amy's periods stopped but she continued to work, until one day she made the decision to prioritise her health. Later that year, she decided to sell the business and take a break. Whilst on her break she began working on how she could solve the problem of stress impacting women's hormones, health and happiness. This is how Moody Month was born. Today’s podcast is on women's health- specifically PERIODS The reason I am creating a series on periods is that I have found within workplace environments that if you have an issue with you periods you simply have to carry on as normal and are way to embarrassed to mention it. For centuries, there has been a stigma surrounding periods: Periods are still in many cases a taboo, so Moody Month is here to change that. Founded by Amy Thomson, Moody Month is a mood and hormone cycle tracker designed to help women better understand their bodies, filling the void of female produced, female-focused technology. The tech company built by women, for women, was created with the idea that our moods should not be suppressed or seen as a taboo, therefore reclaiming what it is to be “moody.”

At DOSE we are obsessed with finding our equilibrium by keeping our happy hormones in check - so we’ve been eagerly anticipating the launch of a new app designed to do just that. MoodyMonth aims to help women better understand their hormones, cycles and moods. The app allows you to log your mood, physical symptoms (such as bloating, cramps, or tiredness), and external pressures such as worries about work or friends and get monthly reports of your logs and memos helping you see patterns and changes. Think of it like “mood forecasting”: it will sync up with your calendar and pull in details such as the weather, as well as your hormonal cycle, in order to present a visual report that could offer clues to why you’re feeling down, to make you feel better. MoodyMonth is the brainchild of marketing genius Amy Thomson, who suffered adrenal fatigue after building a multi-million pound global marketing agency in her twenties, working with global brands such as Nike, Microsoft and RBS. My guest today is the incredible entrepreneur Amy Thomson. She was the founder of SEEN, a global marketing agency working with brands such as Nike, Microsoft and RBS. She is also the co-founder of a business school for future female leaders called Future Girl Corp (alongside Sharmadean Reid, another Ctrl Alt DElete guest), which has a simple mission to inspire the new generation of female leaders. Now, she, alongside her team, has launched the Moody Month App. The mission of the app is to empower every woman to harness their moods through understanding their hormonal and emotional selves. The Moody Month App will allow you to track your monthly moods and cycle, along with plugging straight into your calendar and giving you mood forecasts for your month. The message behind the app is that being moody is your biggest asset, it's what makes you human not a robot. By having more awareness of your moods, means you can optimise your happiness. Let’s all re-connect and embrace the things that make us humans.Amy has shared her story and inspiration behind the app so honestly and openly in this episode. In 2015, when her periods stopped due to stress, she started a diary, and began to see patterns linking her bad moods and her hormonal imbalance. She then sold her agency, broke up with her boyfriend and set out on a mission to build this new technology which has turned into Moody. The site and app offers advice, from books recommendations, to articles to superfood tips. There’s an online shop, too. I found this conversation SO inspiring and I hope you do too.My favourite quote from the episode:"I'm getting Ubers, I'm ordering food, I'm using Nike Plus to track my running, but I'm a writing an analogue diary for my periods??"
