The 2010s is a time we have come to think of as the ‘wellness' rebrand. The era in which we declared that we wanted to be ‘strong not skinny' and that we discarded what we now thought of as ‘fad' diets and traded them in for consistent ‘healthy' living. Skin and bones were out, toned arms, visible abs and curves in all the right places were in.Today we're investigating if by replacing thinness as the thing to which we should aspire to with “healthy”, many of us fell into a false sense of healing, not realising how unhealthy our new and ‘healthy' habits really were….Thanks so much to our amazing guests who feature on this episode: Alice Liveing, Melissa Hemsley and Tally RyeFollow @tallyrye on Instagram Find out more about Tally's work hereFollow @melissa.hemsley on Instagram Order Melissa's latest book Real Healthy here Follow @aliceliveing on Instagram You can buy your copy of Alice's book Give Me Strength hereIf you would like to get in touch - you can email us on shouldideletethat@gmail.com Follow us on Instagram:@shouldideletethat@em_clarkson@alexlight_ldnShould I Delete That is produced by Faye LawrenceMusic: Dex RoyStudio Manager: Dex RoyTrailers: Sophie RichardsonVideo Editor: Celia GomezSocial Media Manager: Emma-Kirsty Fraser Hosted on Acast. Feeds 4 in 30 mins Ingredients: 1 medium cauliflower w leaves 800g 150g cavolo nero or kale 4 portions noodles, I like buckwheat For the dressing: Juice of 2 juicy limes or 1 big lemon 4 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 3 tbsp tamari 1.5 inches fresh ginger, finely grated Chilli flakes, to taste 2 garlic cloves, finely grated 2 tsp maple syrup or honey 2 tsp toasted sesame oil Sea salt & pepper to taste Serve with: Big handful cashews, toasted and roughly chopped kimchi/fried eggs/both Method: 1. Make the dressing by mixing all of the ingredients together in a small bowl or jar or blitz in a food processor if you like your sauces smoother 2. Cook your fave noodles to the packet instructions then drain & toss with a little oil to stop them sticking. 3. Meanwhile toast your cashews in a large frying pan & set aside. Then in same pan, heat 1 tbsp coconut oil or ghee & fry the chopped cauliflower florets plus the finely chopped leaves on a medium heat for about 5 minutes, stir every minute or so until just tender & going golden at the edges. This week, Melissa Hemsley, food writer, chef and sustainability champion, joins the Food Foundation podcast to look at the factors that can stop women getting healthy food when they're pregnant and when they're planning to be.The Food Foundation's latest report Preconception, Pregnancy and Healthy Weight in Childhood shows how much a child's health is influenced before conception, in the womb, and how a child is predisposed to obesity if their parents, especially their mother is living with obesity. We meet mums and food workers from around the country who describe what it's like to try to feed your unborn and newborn child when transport and the cost of living crisis makes access and affordability just two of the biggest deterrents to a healthy diet.Nutritionist and one of the authors of the report, Jenny Rosborough outlines its main findings, while Jeni Meadows of the Food Justice Partnership at Lancaster City Council, Lucy Jackman of Feeding Bristol and Natasha Ricketts from the Evelyn Community Centre in Lewisham introduce us to some of the mums who need the most help.Check out the report here which urges Government to do more to address health inequalities and improve the food environment, particularly for families and parents on a low income. Rates of overweight and obesity in pregnant women increase as the level of deprivation increases. Women living in the most deprived areas are more likely to be underweight or are living with obesity. The report draws attention to the fact that, while Government has acknowledged the need to reduce levels of childhood obesity, more than 1 fifth of children aged four and five start school in England with overweight or obesity (22.2%). These rates are more than twice as high in children living in the most deprived areas compared to the least. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Breaking things up a bit this episode with an AMA from London where I'm staying with my good friend Melissa Hemsley, cookbook author, sustainable food advocate and humanitarian. Mel kindly reads out a bunch of juicy questions: Do you have botox? How do we stay hopeful in the climate crisis when giving up and just enjoying the few remaining "normal years" is easier? Should 16 year-olds be allowed to vote? What about trying mushrooms for anxiety? How do you make friends as an adult? Much of the chat comes back to pulsing between the either/ors we are confronted with, finding the "sweet spot" and making the struggle artful. A lighthearted and witty exploration of some of the big questions that come up when trying to 'walk the green line'. Helping us tackle the question: 'Are we throwing away our future with our food?', is waste warrior and champion for Fairtrade and food sustainability, Melissa Hemsley, Author and Architect, & TED Talk Star, Carolyn Steel, and Ed Gillespie. Environmental entrepreneur, speaker, writer and futurist. Hosted by Juliet Davenport, climate scientist, renewable pioneer, businesswoman, environmental activist and founder of the UK's first 100% renewable electricity supplier, this podcast invites a panel of comedians and experts to tackle some of the common (and quirky!) questions that pop to mind when trying to live a greener life. Topics covered: - What are the potential threats of not addressing food waste? - Corporate sustainability - and should it really be down to the individual - How cities and infrastructure influence how and what we eat - Food literacy, and the fact that so much of what we are talking about relies on people knowing their way around a well stocked, or indeed understocked, kitchen. Can we really crack food waste without cracking cooking skills? - Practical tips for reducing food waste at home including some of Melissa's recipes and tips of where to start - A surprising turn of events for the humble and ever binned banana peel.. and then many, many uses of a cauliflower stem Great Green Questions is powered by Good Energy and produced by Mags Creative, with curation from Hawkwood Centre for Future Thinking.

Anna Barnett today joins Melissa Hemsley in her east London kitchen, resplendent with built-in wok and teppanyaki grill, to discuss the pleasures of dining alone (and not just to chat up the waiters), how the vibrancy of Filipino cuisine is having a moment, reusing leftovers, and the importance of a well-stocked freezer should you find yourself in A&E after a tumble down the stairs. The only thing standing in the way of Anna’s hand-crafted sandwich this week is an uninvited spider Melissa finds in our host’s hair.
