In this episode, which is the second in my series of the foundations of Aware Parenting, I talk about helping children cooperate with toothbrushing. I share about my own journey with my teeth and mouth, and how I passed down some of that trauma to my children, and how that affected their willingness with toothbrushing. I talk about the three reasons why children may not be willing to cooperate with toothbrushing, including trauma related to their mouths, and what we can do to tend to each of those three reasons. I offer suggestions for how to respond to each of those three reasons, including attachment play suggestions. If you want to learn more about attachment play, I highly recommend 'Attachment Play' by Aletha Solter, PhD, and my Attachment Play Course: http://www.attachmentplaycourses.com/join-in You can find out more about my work at www.marionrose.net and my books at: https://marionrose.net/books/ You can also find me here: https://www.instagram.com/theawareparentingpodcast/ https://www.instagram.com/_marion_rose_/ https://www.instagram.com/awareparenting/ www.facebook.com/MarionRosePhD

In the UK, around a third of British children have tooth decay. Just among the under-fives, it's a quarter - a figure that rises significantly in the most deprived areas.Tooth decay can cause speech development issues, embarrassment for children and in 2023, 15 million school days were missed due to tooth pain or treatment. There's a financial cost too – in 2023 in England alone tooth extractions under a general anaesthetic cost the NHS £41 million. And it's totally preventable. So, how can we stop teeth rotting in the first place? One way initiative announced by the new Labour government is to expand supervised toothbrushing sessions to more children. We find out how these work with Oral Health Team Lead Helen Bullingham who supports nurseries and schools in East Sussex to deliver these programmes. But what about the evidence to support this intervention? Zoe Marshman, Professor of Dental Public Health at University of Sheffield, explains her findings and dental hygienist and researcher at King's College London Dr Claire McCarthy describes what parents should be doing, in an ideal world, at home. And finally, what role does sugar play and how can we get consumption down? Dr Nina Rogers from the Population Health Innovation Lab at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine explains her findings into the impact of the Sugar Drinks Industry Levy introduced in 2018.Presenter: James Gallagher Producers: Hannah Robins Content Editor: Holly SquireInside Health is a BBC Wales & West production for Radio 4, produced in partnership with The Open University.
Literature Review 1) Does oral health affect your life if you are sick and in intensive care? According to a new study in JAMA, the answer is yes. From the study: 10,742 patients - "toothbrushing was associated with significantly lower risk for Hospital Acquired Pneumonia and ICU mortality. Reduction in pneumonia incidence was significant for patients receiving invasive mechanical ventilation but not for patients who were not receiving invasive mechanical ventilation. Toothbrushing for patients in the ICU was associated with fewer days of mechanical ventilation and a shorter ICU length of stay. Brushing twice a day vs more frequent intervals was associated with similar effect estimates....Non-ICU hospital length of stay and use of antibiotics were not associated with toothbrushing." (Ehrenzeller et. al. 2024) Why does this matter? In effect, what this study shows is that patients with oral hygiene needs that are not met will have increased bacterial burdens leading to infectious disease risk via systemic inflammation and possibly bacterial translocation. At the end of the day, oral hygiene is very important to lower the total burden of inflammation in everyone, but especially in the most ill patient. It is super important for everyone to brush 2-3 x daily and floss daily at night..... Plus a discussion on Back to School. Enjoy, Dr. M

Teaching good tooth brushing habits early is really important, at least that's what parents have always been told. One mom in Oregon is having trouble with her toddler doing just that. Right now he won't use any other toothpaste besides the training one. Is it really that important? Good news is this is one thing you don't have to stress too much about. But what you may stress about is a toddler that enjoys banging their head on things. What could be causing this need? It's all about their design and we'll explain this week on the podcast! Precision dentistry researchers at the University of Pennsylvania have developed a nano robotic system using iron oxide nanoparticles that can be assembled into bristles and motorized by computer-controlled magnetic fields to roll over your teeth and gums and remove all debris. Even better, the iron oxide activates hydrogen peroxide that degrades biofilms and kills bacteria before it can trigger gum infections. Work is now ongoing on a consumer-level prototype that can be commercialized. https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acsnano.2c01950 #nanorobots #dentistry #toothbrushing #flossing #ironoxide #gingivitis

We've spoken about why pets need dental scale and polishes under anesthesia before, and we're warning you about the trap of “anesthesia-free dentals.” It seems too good to be true - coz it is. BUT! Teaching your pet to accept toothbrushing at home is an effective, safe (and cheap!) way to maintain their dental health, and there's no downside. Nicole and Jez discuss the benefits of toothbrushing and why anesthesia-free dentals are a marketing ploy that makes dental issues worse.

As with with any new experience, the first impression is important. When you begin teaching your cat about toothbrushing, you are introducing a new routine that will be a lifelong habit. Take your time. Let your cat accept each stage of this new routine before moving onto the next one. Toothbrushing can become a pleasant routine. Cats are good at forming habits and respond well to a consistent routine. When you consistently repeat a routine, your cat learns to anticipate your actions. You and your cat have already established a daily routine for feeding. Your cat lets you know that he or she expects to be fed at certain times. If you have more than one cat to care for, establish a “brushing order” and follow it. This is avoids jealousy by letting everyone know that his or her turn will come. Use reassurance and rewards, never reprimands. If at any time your cat is anxious, give reassurance by talking and petting, and try again. Expect progress, not perfection. Reward any progress immediately with a treat. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thekittyboss/message

Today I managed to brush my teeth, with my electric toothbrush, for about ten seconds. Now many of you are likely thinking to yourselves at this point that ten seconds is not nearly enough time to brush one's mouth thoroughly, and I will admit that I would have loved to brush longer, but today ten seconds was a victory. I'm Autistic. A big part of that is altered sensory processing that can make sensations most people ignore entirely overwhelming.
