Author, speaker, life coach, Caris Snider talks today about how she struggled with anxiety and depression and how that's not a bad thing, it's just a thing that can be progressed through with the help of community, the truths of God's Word and presence, and possibly a  coach and/or therapist. Overwhelmed with all the things a mom faces, she began a little podcast that's become a big one called "Car Line Mom" - what we think about while we're in all the lines waiting with our kids or for our kids. Her latest book, by the same title is available today: Car Line Mom: 100 Days of Encouragement for the Mama Who Gets Everyone Everywhere.   Some gems from today's podcast: When negative thoughts come in, don't let them stay! No matter how we struggle as moms, we are never alone.  No one in the Bible did their journey alone; ask God for a friend to journey with you as a mom. I learned through my own feelings of inadequacy and living an over-committed life that it's okay to say "no" and create healthy margins A coach helps us Zoom Out on your life map to see how we can get where we want to go. Jesus was a our model even in negative feelings so we don't need to be afraid to have them. We don't need to be afraid to talk about faith and mental health. As mom's we feel like we can't fail which adds chaos and "overwhelm" to our lives.  We need to live from the overflow of God's presence. He promises peace; we need to live in and from that peace. CARIS SNIDER loves to share the hope of God through speaking, writing, coaching, and leading worship. She is the author of “Anxiety Elephants: 31 Day Devotional” and “Anxiety Elephants: 90 Day Devotional for Tween Boys and Girls.” From her own personal experience, she helps women in their journey of overcoming depression, anxiety, fear, and shame. Caris lives with her husband, Brandon, and two daughters in Cullman, Alabama. A word from Caris: I am so glad that you have found your way here. You see, I know what it is like to be shackled in guilt and shame, feeling hopeLESS and purposeLESS. BUT, I also know the freedom of those shackles being broken and beginning to live a life FULLfilled. I have my good days and I have my bad days. I have had some pretty dark days as well. I don't know what type of day you are having, but just know that many of us have been where you are, and there is hope to make it out. Find free resources HERE. Unlikely Housewives of JoCo: Cultivating Authentic Freedom & Wellness for Women

Are you the master of wearing a mask?  The one you put on to hide what's really going on…the one who responds with “I'm great, how are you?” Or “we're good, you?”. However, deep down that's not what you are really thinking and feeling…living in that artificial world isn't too comforting.  So many long for authenticity but like with Caris, struggle to make their way to that point. Listen into today's episode to hear Caris share her tough moments of doubting her purpose and finding herself feeling breathless.  She describes her anxiety as if feeling like an elephant was on her chest. Caris is super transparent in sharing that before she was diagnosed and battled on her own, she was someone who believed anxiety and depression was not real. She starved her anxiety to the point of numbing the pain. Caris pulled away from everything she possibly could in order to keep hiding from her true pain. When the darkest moments came, she felt like a burden to everyone. Please listen in to hear how God pulled her from the trenches and how He has used this in her life for His Glory! Caris Snider and Amber discuss her experience with anxiety and how she is learning to shine light in the darkness for adults, tweens, teens and children through her devotional Anxiety Elephants. Questions Discussed During Battling Anxiety: Share a little of your early faith journey with us. When did you begin walking with Jesus? I don't know the details of your story, but what I do know sounds eerily familiar. While mine was crying uncontrollably on the floor while my 3 year old and newborn played nearby, yours was an anxiety attack while your daughter played nearby. Take us back to that time in your life and share what life was like and how you were coping. In addition to panic attacks, you were not eating due to the anxiety and fear, which is often a symptom of anxiety far less talked about. Will you speak to that symptom and your experience? What drove you to finally seek help and whose help did you seek? Seeking the help of a doctor and counselor are becoming less stigmatized, but as followers of Jesus we can still believe lies like, "I must not have enough faith" and "If I pray, this will go away." Did you believe those lies or others and how did you overcome them? You talk a lot about the freedom that comes from speaking openly about your experience vs. hiding and I 100% agree. It is another tool we have to fight against anxiety and depression. Not constantly bemoaning our illness, but shining light into the darkness, so others can pray and encourage. How has speaking openly about your journey with anxiety brought freedom? You've written Anxiety Elephants: A 31 day devotional to help stomp out your anxiety and now have a 90 day tween version for both girls and boys. Share a bit about your journey of writing the devotional and how you've seen God use your experience for good. If someone purchases your book, what can they expect? SHOW NOTES cont. Welcome to the Love Where You Are podcast!  In today's episode I am joined by Caris Snider. Caris is a Christian Communicator who shares the hope of God through speaking, and leading worship. She is the recent author of Anxiety Elephants 31 Day Devotional.  Her passion for the Lord comes through as she shares from her experiences of overcoming depression and anxiety. Her desire is to help women of all ages with their faith and mental health journey. In this episode, Somer and Caris discuss anxiety and the toll it is taking on our kids. Children even in fifth grade are confessing to struggle with anxiety, and as parents we have to face it with them. Our children live in a world after a life-changing pandemic, being forced into isolation and fear of an invisisble virus, now growing fears of "World War III" with the Ukrainian war, and prevelant social media exposure. Not to mention the other life struggles teens may face like "Should I go to college?"  "Can I afford college" and "What am I going to do with my life, what major or job should I get?" On top of it all, new life changes like dating, learning how to drive, the list goes on... our teens and tweens are dealing with plenty of stress and uncertain futures. How do we help them through it?  Caris walks us through Scripture, the practical advice God gives us in the Bible for dealing with anxiety, the scientific explanations for what anxiety is and what it does with our brain chemistry, and the best thing you can do as a parent to help prepare your child for this world.  Thank you for being here today. Now, let's dive into the conversation!  You can connect with Caris Snider through Instagram, and her webste.  You can also order her new book!    FAVORITE TAKE-AWAYS Our tweens and teens are experiencing a lot of uncertainty in their lives, witnessing the pandemic, now the Ukrainian war, people talking about "World War III", inflation, election season, etc. On top of it all, they're experiencing interpersonal drama with friends, romantic interests, teachers, coaches, and having new learning experiences like driving and wondering about college. There is a lot of stress.    Symptoms of Anxiety to look out for in your child: -Stomach aches -Raised heart rate  -Heavy chest, chest aches -Difficulty verbalizing  -Unregulated emotions, i.e. crying easily, anger    Things which can trigger anxiety: -Lack of sleep -Caffiene (energy drinks, coffee, etc)  -Upcoming tests   It is important to create safe spaces for our kids, places where they can talk about their struggles and not feel judged or condemned. Conversation is critical.    "Need to know basis" what a fourteen year old knows doesn't necessarily need to be what a ten year old child knows. Have appropriate conversations with age levels, but also not be afraid of going into tough topics, like body changes. We have to talk with our kids before the World does.    There is a difference between boys and girls, but boys still need our attention and conversations--maybe just in a different way.    REMEMBER The Bible is full of coping mechanisms--God knows we deal with anxiety.  Scripture talks about breathing, a tool to calm our bodies. Scripture talks about grateful hearts, and science has shown gratitude repels anxiety. Scripture talks about a peace beyond understanding when we come to Jesus.    You're doing a better job than you think.    There is nothing wrong with seeking help: counseling and therapy for your child, and if necessary, medication--there is no shame in it. Taking medicine for a broken arm is no different than taking medicine to balance brain chemistry.    Have a support system, have people to lift you up and pray for you; and pray for your child.    SCRIPTURE  Psalms 94:19 Philipians 4:6-8 Galatians 6:9   Connect with Somer!  Stay connected to Somer and the Love Where You Are podcast through her Facebook & Instagram! Many times our tweens, teens, and young adults suffer from anxiety. Sometimes we don't know what to do. Caris Snider, an anxiety survivor herself, has written all about anxiety and now for girl and boy tweens too! Tweens are around the age of 8 years old to 12 years old. Older teens and young adults who face anxiety would greatly benefit from Caris's first book, Anxiety Elephants 31 Day Devotional! Maybe you aren't sure if your child is suffering from anxiety. Here are some symptoms: stomach ache, headaches, fidgety, distraction during school or sports, crying, or getting angry. These are real symptoms, and we need to dig a little deeper to help them overcome anxiety. How do we help our children with anxiety? Here are a few suggestions: Open up a conversation while distracted, so they are more likely to open up. Start conversations with specific questions about today. For example, "How was your lunch?" instead of "How was your day?" We want the most information we can get. Discuss some of the more complex issues with your tween, teen, and young adults to prepare and not be caught off guard, giving them a firm foundation. These keys can help you equip them for anxiety- why wait? In Anxiety Elephants for Tweens, you get a scripture, devotion, and a stomp step to help stomp out anxiety each day. There is also a Prayer and journaling page so that they can write down their struggles or what they learned- or even draw something- or rewrite the scripture. Once you determine that your intuition may be correct, here are a few more positive steps to help them. Admit and acknowledge they are anxious so you know that you need the next steps. If your child had asthma, you would go to a doctor and even get medicine. So first, make an appointment with your child's doctor and make sure there is no underlying condition. Rule out any physical problems. Then make an appointment for a counselor to help guide your anxious tweens to healing. There seem to be 2 main extremes when it comes to mental health. ON ONE HAND, the Church has often shied away from talking about mental health and, instead, communicates that you should just get healing/breakthrough in Christ. This can be harmful and often leaves believers feeling guilty for “not praying hard enough” or not “having faith” to overcome real battles with mental health. ON THE OTHER HAND, our current culture is telling us that if we struggle anxiety/depression we just need to accept that it's just the way you are and live with it, simply learning coping mechanisms. This can also be damaging because it can cause us to take on these mental health issues as part of our identity. In this episode, Caris Snider, a Christian mental health advocate, discusses what it looks like to battle mental health in partnership with Jesus. She recognizes how real anxiety and depression are, while also expressing what freedom in Christ can look like. If you want to be part of this conversation, listen now!
